Jerusalem. The Emanation of the Giant Albion. 1804

[London: John Pearson, 1877]. Large 4to, 100 plates, printed in black and white, with black framing lines. Modern quarter brown morocco and cloth boards, a few leaves at the back with slight paper damage in the margin. A wonderful facsimile of copy D (now at Harvard), limited to 100 copies per Bentley and Keynes. Bentley attributed the publication to Chatto but revised it to Pearson in his Blake Books supplement. The Rinder copy reproduced by the Trianon Press is in a smaller format and this large quarto has a much more imposing and appealing presence and seems to be a better facsimile - certainly this copy is clearer and more striking than copy C. Bentley, Blake Books, 76, and Blake Books Supplement, p. 88. As is well known, Blake made five copies of Jerusalem of which only one did he color , the other four all being b/w. A suite of 25 plates was also colored by Blake, and a few posthumous copies were printed in tints.

        MR. NIGHTINGALE'S DIARY

1877 - A Farce in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1877. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black. First "Collectible" Edition of this play first performed in 1851. We say first "collectible" because there are only four known copies of the original 1851 pamphlet; supposedly a fifth, from which Osgood printed this edition, was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879. This is a volume in the publisher's "Vest Pocket Series," so named for its diminutive size (a second Dickens "comic burletta" was published in this series the same year -- IS SHE HIS WIFE?).~This copy is terra-cotta in color; others are green, without priority. It is a bright, near-fine copy (minor rubbing at the tips, one small mark on the fore-edge of the leaves) -- quite uncommon in this condition. Eckel pp 64-5. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Art Industriel: L'Ornement Des Tissus: Recueil Historique et Pratique, Avec Des Notes Explicatives et Une Introduction Generale

Paris: Ducher & Cie. (Librairie Generale De L'Architecture et Des Travaux Publics), 1877. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Book. Elephant Folio - over 15. 38, [2] pp. + 100 chromolithographic plates, each with separate text explanation page. Plates are 16 by 12 inches approximately, or 40 by 30 cm. This is a grand production inspired by Racinet's "Ornement Polychrome". Dupont-Auberville was a storied collector of fabric, which served as the primary basis for the patterns presented in this work. His collection was exhibited at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in 1880, and part of the collection was subsequently offered for sale at the Hotel Drouot, The Parisian Saleroom, in a two day sale in February 1885. This copy of the work is bound in full morocco, with six raised bands on the spine and gilt lettering for the title there. The only significant condition issue to speak of for the copy is the outline of a dampstain on the front board and upper third of the spine. On spine the outline is thicker -- it looks as if a bushstroke were run up the center of the spine where affected. Some very minor scuffs along edges otherwise. Nonetheless the red morocco is very bright and healthy, and notwithstanding the dampstain, attractive. Intricate dentelles along edges of inner boards. Gilt ruling along leather edges. T.e.g. or bright gilt foreedges. Very tight binding. Plates are bright and clean. Text clean.Marbled flypapers. Small discreet bookplate of noted decorative arts bibliophiles Robert Hoe and Arthur Hoe. Overall a gorgeous copy.

A Thousand Miles up the Nile [With Signed Letter from Edwards to Another Female Travel Writer]

London: Longmans, Green and Co, 1877. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. pp. xxv, 732, copiously illustrated with full-page plates and illustrations in the text from Edwards' own drawings, two colored folding maps (Egypt, Lower Nubia). In the publisher's original red cloth decorated with Egyptian motifs in red and black; all edges gilt. Recently rebacked (original spine retained); binding sound, contents clean and bright. Edwards (1831-1892) already had a successful career as a novelist when she traveled to Egypt for the first time in 1873 and discovered her lifelong passion. She and her traveling companion, Lucy Renshawe, hired a boat in Cairo and "sailed to Wadi Halfa, accompanying friends met on the crossing from Italy. While at Abu Simbel the party discovered, excavated, and described in detail a previously unknown small temple with a painted chamber. [The two women] also visited Syria, crossed the Lebanese ranges to Damascus and Baalbek, and traveled on to Constantinople" (DNB). On her return to England, Edwards read extensively about ancient Egypt and studied hieroglyphics before writing this book, based on her experiences and the detailed notes and measurements she made on the journey. It was the first general archaeological survey of Egypt's ruins and earned Edwards the admiration of the leading archaeologists of the day, as well as praise from the popular press for "its 'brilliant descriptions of scenery and the exactness of its information' and as 'a delightful, gossiping book'" (DNB). A recognized classic of travel literature, it has been reprinted many times, but is quite scarce in the first edition. This volume is accompanied by handwritten note dated Dec. 31, 1878 from Edwards to "My dear Miss [May] Crommelin" (1850-1930), at the time a young and aspiring author who would eventually publish more than 40 travel narratives and novels. "Pray be quite sure that I have never forgotten you, & that I always take a very sincere interest in you & your literary progress. You greatly overrate the very small use I was so fortunate as to be of in the matter--& that you should still remember it, is to me the most astonishing experience of my life. Ever most sincerely yours, Amelia B. Edwards." The "most astonishing experience of my life," may refer to her role in the discovery and excavation of the ruins at Aboo Simbel.

Highly unusual and desirable oversize sepia photograph depicting First Lady Lucy W. Hayes, inscribed and signed by President Rutherford B. Hayes to his secretary of state, William Evarts

Highly unusual and desirable oversize sepia photograph depicting First Lady Lucy W. Hayes, 7½" x 13", taken by Napoleon Sarony of New York, inscribed at the lower edge by the President "To Mr. Evarts, with kindest regards, Rutherford B. Hayes", also dated by him "1877" beneath the image. Sarony later produced a beautifully matched pair of cabinet-size photographs of President and Mrs. Hayes on October 2, 1878. Minor discoloration on the lower left corner barely detracting from this possibly unique signed image. William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901) was an American lawyer and statesman. Evarts was appointed an assistant United States district attorney and served from 1849-1853. In 1860 he was chairman of the New York delegation to the Republican National Convention. He was chief counsel for President Andrew Johnson during the impeachment trial, and from July 1868 until March 1869 he was Johnson's Attorney General of the United States. Evarts served as counsel for President-elect Rutherford B.
