DORÉ, Gustave.) COLERIDGE, Samuel Taylor.
London: Doré Gallery, [and] Hamilton, Adams, & Co., 1876. Square folio. Original red morocco-grain cloth, blind ornamental panel to sides, French titles in gilt to front board, duck egg blue coated endpapers. Water stains and discolouration to binding, rubbed, occasional faint foxing, orange stains to a couple of plates' versos; still, a very good copy, the plates mostly clean and unaffected. Wood-engraved frontispiece, title vignette, head and tail-piece and 38 plates by Paul Jonnard (12), Héliodore Pisan (7), Charles Laplante (3), Desire-Mathieu Quesnel (3), Albert Bellenger (2), Charles Gillot (2), François Pannemaker (2), Adolphe Gusman (2), Emile Deschamps (2), Jonnard/Brunier (1), unsigned (2) after Doré; title page printed in red and black. First Doré edition and one of his finest books, "among Doré's excursions into the sublime and the terrible, it is inferior only to the Inferno" (Ray); copies in the original cloth, as here, are certainly uncommon. The engraving and printing of this handsome folio cost Doré £3,500: he employed a large team of engravers, headed by masters of the burin Paul Jonnard and Héliodore Pisan, Doré's "most skilful engraver", and had the book printed in Paris by the distinguished firm of Crété at Corbeil. It was published at New York the same year, and although not a commercial success, it was praised by the critics and its importance in reinforcing Coleridge's reputation on the Continent was considerable: "no artist perhaps so directly and on such a scale as Doré's Ancient Mariner taking the impression of a single work and establishing the p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Julia A. Moore
Grand Rapids, Michigan: C. M. Loomis, 1876. Good to very good ~ Missing hard board covers if it had them. Interior pages are clean and free from stains and foxing! Cover pages have a few small tears and can be viewed in photos. All pages there. There are staples that are old, as found. See description for more detail. CENTENNIAL, 1876 THE SENTIMENTAL SONG BOOK Original 4.25" x 6" booklet Printed by C.M. Loomis, Grand Rapids, Michigan Dated 1876 Julia Ann Moore, the "Sweet Singer of Michigan" (1847-1920) was America's challenger to Scotland's William McGonagall as the 19th Century's master of bad poetry in English -- a requirement for contention being, of course, that the poet couldn't be working tongue-in-cheek. Ogden Nash dedicated his first book to her, crediting to her hopeless verse his decision to become a "great bad poet" rather than a "bad good poet." In "Huckleberry Finn," Mark Twain based the character Emmeline Grangerford on Moore. Born Julia Ann Davis, she started writing poetry in her mid-teens, mostly in response to the deaths of children she knew, though (like McGonagall) any newspaper account of disaster could inspire her. At age 17, she married Frederick Moore, a farmer. Moore's first book of verse, "The Sentimental Song Book" was published in 1876 by Loomis in Grand Rapids, and quickly went into a second edition. A copy ended up in the hands of James Ryder of Cleveland, who republished it under the title "The Sweet Singer of Michigan Salutes the Public," sending out review copies to newspapers across the country, with a cover letter filled with mocking "fai … [Click Below for Full Description]

[California]
[Petaluma], 1876. Very good.. 31 leaves. Large folio. Original maroon half calf and cloth, manuscript label on front cover. Corners and spine heavily worn, some loss to spine ends. Internally clean and highly legible. Large ledger detailing delinquent taxes for Petaluma for three years, listing names and values of personal property including real estate. Among these are entries for several Chinese. By 1860 Petaluma had developed a thriving little Chinatown which housed about 500 people, together with shops and laundries. As with elsewhere in California and across the United States, the Chinese began to face greater and greater hostilities through the 1860s and 1870s, culminating in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Many of the early Chinese immigrants to California are unrecorded and unremarked by history, making this tax ledger an important source for the Chinese community in Petaluma. The records for 1873-1874 list seventy-seven delinquent tax accounts, including one Chinese named Tung On who had personal property valued at $200. The following year lists sixty-two delinquent accounts, including one Chinese named Tie Woo (listed elsewhere as Tigh Woo, but presumably the same man), who had personal property valued at $500. There is a sharp increase in delinquencies for 1875-1876, with 169 entries, including ten Chinese and one woman, a Miss O'Gorman, all with property valued anywhere from $50 to $600. Interestingly, there is also a listing for an African Chapel on Lot 276 in Petaluma. None of the Chinese are noted as owning real estate. Each year is followed b … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lewis Carroll
1876. This is a rare first edition, first issue of Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark published in London by Macmillan & Co., 1876 with 'baker' instead of 'butcher' on p. 83. A fragile scarce title normally found in worse condition. All nine of Holiday's (the illustrator) fanciful images are intact and in very good condition. The book has kept its gilt edging and has been protected by a plastic cover. A humorous 'fantastical' poem in the tradition and style of Carroll that tells the tale of an impossible voyage for an improbable crew hunting an imaginary creature. Certainly, many later editions and reproductions exist, but this is the original to be protected and treasured. [Attributes: First Edition]

Turner, Bessie
G. W. Carleton & Co, 1876. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Uncommon First Edition. Blind-stamped ribbed dark green cloth elaborately stamped in gilt at the spine. 8vo., 288pp. A near fine copy of this early detective novel. Anna Katherine Green's [1846-1935] THE LEAVENWORTH CASE, [1878]; is generally considered to be the first detective novel written by a woman & largely on the strength of that, Green is variously considered as either: Mother, Grandmother, Godmother of the Detective Story. A lesser known novel, THE DEAD LETTER by Seeley Regester [pseud. of Metta Victoria Victor] was actually published earlier, in 1867 - perhaps Seeley might be viewed as Great Grandmother - which brings us back to Bessie Turner. Published 8-years before the Green book, A WOMAN IN THE CASE, is not only the second earliest known detective novel written by a woman but also the first novel to contain the word Woman in the title. Quite historical. Turner [& Seeley] deserve more credit. [Attributes: First Edition]

1876. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Good. MANUSCRIPT (NOT COMPLETE) OF A RARE POETRY BOOK Charlotte Aurelia Townsend (née Winder), the daughter of General William Winder and Gertrude Polk of Maryland, was born at Rewastico, Somerset, Maryland, in 1806. Her brother, General John Winder (1800-1865), was the Confederate general in charge of prisons who designed the infamous Andersonville Prison. In 1846 she married James C. She falsely or inadvertently claimed that a black man, Simon Rappalyea (1828-1894) late of the 20th United States Colored Infantry in the American Civil War, whose wife did the laundry, was the perpetrator. It turned out the real murderer was a serial killer, Charles Rugge, who murdered seven people before he was found. J'y suis gauche.
