Smith, Julia E.
CT: American Publishing Company, 1876. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Book has evidence of modest cover wear likely due to silverfish at some point in the past. Purchased at an auction in Smith's hometown of Glastonbury. The book came from a Hale home a short distance from where Julia and Abbey resided. Given the like new condition of the interior, I suspect this was one of fifty copies that was sold at auction when Julia sold the residence after marrying for the first time in her mid-eighties and moved to Hartford. In the world of bibles and the importance of women's rights, this book and this woman are at the top of the list. .

Collins Denny; John B. Minor
[Charlottesville], 1876. The lithographically duplicated student notes of Collins Denny, first year graduate law student of the University of Virginia at the time. Denny would later go on to serve as a Chaplain at UVA, Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy at Vanderbilt, and Bishop of the Methodist Church, South. His Professor of Law, John Barbee Minor, would publish this same material in his monumental compendium, the Institutes of Common and Statute Law, nearly a decade later. These classroom notes, complete in two volumes, correspond to Volume IV, Parts I & II of Minor's future set, on "The Practice of the Law in Civil Cases, Including the Subject of Pleading." This lithographic duplication of Collin Denny's class notes form arguably an ur-edition of John Minor's published work, and include Denny's analytical index, appendix of legal forms, index of the legal forms, the 22 February 1877 examination questions, as well as the proceedings of a county circuit court. The proceedings were written in another hand. The volumes were duplicated in a lithographic fashion, many variants of which are described in Rhodes and Streeter's Before Photocopying. Perhaps a photolithographic duplicate, which was popular during the 1870's and allowed for original documents to be duplicated, ones which did not need the specially prepared inks of other lithographic processes. Text faint in parts, due to the inexact nature of lithographs, and certain leaves cut to uneven length (e.g. ff. xxx, 698), with no loss to the text. Some separation to the few folded, oversized leaves. The spine and joi … [Click Below for Full Description]

The title page has browned somewhat due to the tissue guard (see pics) and has an inscription along the top edge dated '19th October 1876'. The book comes housed in a custom curved edge slipcase. Lined with black suede and covered with dark brown Colorado cloth. A really sweet little book! Postage of this item in the UK is via 24 hour courier which is free of charge. CARROLL, Lewis.
Londra, MacMillan and Co., 1876. in-8, pp. XIV, 84, (2), con 9 tavole illustrate a piena pagina. Legatura in tela editoriale originale, color nocciola, finemente figurata in nero su entrambi i piatti, titolo sempre in nero al dorso, sguardie nere, tagli dorati. . .

Macomb, Capt. J.N.
the Government Printing Office, 1876. Washington, Engineer Department, U.S. Army, quarto, vii, [1], 152 p., 22 plates with explanation sheets: 11 chromolithographic landscape views, and 11 lithographed plates of scenery and fossils. The separately published geographic map, not included in many copies, is not present. ***CONTENT: Though its publication was delayed by the Civil War, the Army expedition under Macomb explored parts of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado in the summer of 1859 to determine the practicality of rail or wagon routes to the Great Basin and the southern Utah settlements. The expedition travelled NW along parts of the Old Spanish Trail, following the Chama Valley, crossing the continental divide, and thence through the San Juan country westward to the upper canyons of the Colorado drainage. Much of the text is devoted to Newberry's geological report, which provides details on scenery, rock types, economic products, fossils and archaeology. Newberry's striking landscape drawings, lithographed in color by Sinclair of Philadelphia, have been heralded as some of the best early renditions of western scenery. ***CONDITION: This is a complete, VG copy in the original brown cloth, with the original gilt-lettered and decorated backstrip. The covers are very sound, but with minor wear and mild discoloration to the lower inch of the front board. The backstrip lettering and decoration is complete, bold and bright. Joints and hinges solid, binding very firm. The text pages are very fresh and clean. The colored plates (with original tissue guards) are pristine, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ce journal révèle un esprit cultivé et curieux, d'autant plus intéressant qu'il s'agit de son premier embarquement. [New Orleans]: Peychaud & Garcia, 48 Camp Street, 1876. Folio. (13 11/16 x 9 3/4 inches). Lithographed and mounted on cloth guards throughout, title with oval hand-coloured vignette, 16 hand-coloured plates, each with title beneath. Publisher's half black morocco and pebbled cloth covered boards, lettered in gilt on the upper cover. Housed in a dark red morocco backed box.Provenance: Ventress Jones (presentation copy inscribed by Fremaux)A classic American colour-plate book which offers a new and improved take on the twin European traditions of suites of plates of regional costume and street cries: presentation copy inscribed by the author."Costume books and illustrations of typical trades and occupations, so common in European color plate books, are comparatively rare in America. This book of New Orleans street characters may be the best example of the genre printed in the United States" (Reese). It clearly helped that Frémaux, a Louisiana native, empathized with his subjects. He has managed to truly capture not only the individuals but also to embody the varied and colourful character of the city of New Orleans itself. His training as an engineer and cartographer will have served Frémaux well when it came to recording the details that make an image memorable: the pearl earring of Rose Nicaud, the first coffee vendor in New Orleans (see the final plate); the drummer's toeless shoe (plate 6 of the man who drummed up business for auctioneer, Placide J. Spear). Three of the plates are of characters from the "professional" classes and are probably all portraits … [Click Below for Full Description]

Whitman, Walt
Whitman, 1876. Special Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. The signed "author's edition," signed as called for by the author on the title page, but also additionally inscribed and dated July 27, 1876, by the author on the front free endpaper. Also bears the recipient's ownership signature on the front free endpaper, Ms. K. Hillard. This author's edition was published by Whitman himself as a "centennial edition," one on only 600 copies printed, and constituted the fifth edition, third printing, second issue of Leaves of Grass. Book has later leather spine. Laid in is a signed letter to Ms. Hillard, dated March 12, 1876. Int he letter Whitman speaks about mutual friends and animated get togethers, and also discusses how expensive it was to self-publish the centennial books ("how absurdly high the price."). The letter is separated at the center fold, and a small corner missing, affecting part of the signature. Housed in a handsome clamshell case.[Attributes: Signed Copy]

Sherlock Holmes) Bell, Joseph (1837-1911)
1876. N.p., undated. 1 page. 12mo. Some wrinkles and a few stains, very good. 1 page. 12mo. The Model for Sherlock Holmes. A rare ALS of the Scottish surgeon Joseph Bell, on whom the character of Sherlock Holmes was based. In full: "Dear Miss Alyce, The enclosed is all I can get for you. But I trust it is very nice. He has taken to a typewriter but you see he furnishes nicely my Autograph, Joseph Bell." It would seem more than likely that the Autograph in question was Arthur Conan Doyle's. "Conan Doyle, as he became known, entered Edinburgh University medical school in 1876 and witnessed a variety of medical characters, chief among them his mentor, Joseph Bell. Bell was a master of deduction from minutiae of evidence, such as gravel on a shoe conveying a patient's route to work, the better to impress the patient and his own attendant students. Otherwise, Bell was austere and scientific with students and patients, in contrast to Sir Patrick Heron Watson, of whom it was said that 'nobody in Scotland was ready to die until they had first seen Watson'. The contrast between Bell's and P. H. Watson's manners survives in Holmes's cold-bloodedness contrasted with John Watson's humanity" (ODNB).

SHAKESPEARE, William.
Istanbul: Kirk Anbar Matbaasi 1293 [1876]. Octavo, four loose gatherings, uncut and untrimmed. Paginated 123-174. Housed in a black flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Strip of tape to spine, extremities lightly chipped and torn but generally a remarkable survival in very good condition. First edition in Ottoman Turkish, done by Hasan Bedreddin and Mehmet Rifat from the French translation of Jean-Francois Ducis, and performed 1867–77 in Gedikpasa theatre in Istanbul, the first theatre in Turkey where plays were performed by Turkish actors rather than travelling troupes. Shakespeare was becoming popular at this time, after the Armenians had brought a production of Shakespeare to Turkey in 1862. Güllü Agop's Turkish version of Romeo and Juliet, which was performed to great acclaim though never published, is thought to have been the first translation into Turkish. Othello was next to be translated and would have been of special interest to the Ottomans for its Moorish hero. Jonathan Bate observes the "consonance between the names of 'Othello' and that of the general enemy 'Ottoman'. This would have been especially apparent if, as is likely, the original pronunciation was Otello" ("Othello and the Other: Turning Turk", Times Literary Supplement, 19 October 2001). Othello remains today "probably the most popular play with Turkish audiences. It has been adapted under various names—including 'The Revenge of the Negro'—and most famous Turkish actors have played it Othello treats various themes that have special resonance for Turkish audiences: the theme of the 'other', alie … [Click Below for Full Description]
