MACDONALD, George.
London: Strahan & Co., Publishers, 1876. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and illustration gilt to spine and front, brown coated endpapers. Ends and corners somewhat worn, cracking to hinges (more so to rear), inscription erased from head of title, small chip from fore-corner of front free endpaper repaired, still a bright attractive copy in very good condition overall. First edition, sole impression, of this scarce anthology of German and Italian poetry translated into English by noted Victorian fantasy writer George MacDonald, including the Spiritual Songs of Novalis. Also presented are English renditions of Luther, Schiller, Goethe, Heine, Petrarch, Milton (from his Italian), and others. MacDonald first encountered Novalis while cataloguing a library in 1842, and did issue a small privately printed edition of the Spiritual Songs alone in 1851 - these are very rare. MacDonald often used quotations from Novalis in his own books - his favourite was "Our life is no dream; but it ought to become one, and perhaps will", which he invokes in Phantastes, Lilith, and The Portent. William Raeper, MacDonald's biographer, declared: "The life and thought of Novalis so gripped MacDonald that he returned to him again and again, finding some deep affinity in the spiritual, sad and simple poetry of the afflicted German." Richard F Burton
London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1876. First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. xiv, [2], 261, [1]; vi, [2], 255 (i.e. 355), [1]; largely unopened; 4 wood-engraved plates and 2 folding maps, plus other wood-engraved illustrations in the text; a very good copy in a secondary (unrecorded?) binding of original blindstamped terracotta cloth stamped in gilt on spines. Sir Richard Burton (1821-90) is well known for his colorful career, recorded in numerous books and articles, as a diplomat, explorer and ethnographer. In 1861 he was appointed consul to Fernando Po (now Bioko) in Equatorial Guinea, remaining there for four years until he was transferred to Brazil. These volumes collate the expeditions and ethnographic observations made during his time there. In his preface, Burton writes that the 'plain truth' about the African has not been told in Britain, declaring that English occupation of West Africa has proved 'a remarkable failure'. First published in 1876, the second volume recounts a journey made from Fernando Po to Loango Bay and up the Congo River. Of particular interest is the penultimate chapter, 'The slaver and the missionary in the Congo River', in which Burton expresses his ambivalence towards a European presence in Africa. Volume 2 also includes appendices containing geographical observations. Penzer, p. 94; Spink 56; Casada 66: "This work covers the Fan people and the region of the lower Congo.".

Boston: Cunard Steamship Company, 1876. Tinted lithograph finished with hand colour. Sheet 550 x 710mm. The second edition of this uncommon view of Boston harbour icebound, first published in 1844, showing the people of the city standing on the ice watching the 'Britannia' escaping. In January 1844 a severe cold snap caused Boston Harbour to freeze over, a rare occurrence. According to the title the local merchants paid for a canal to be cut through ice seven miles long, allowing this paddle steamer to leave. Although the print was published to celebrate the achievement, it backfired as it showed the harbour could be put out of action, unlike New York.

Milnes, Richard Monckton (Lord Houghton)
London: John Murray. Published 1876, 2 volumes, full pebbled midnight blue morocco gilt, with bookplates of Constance Battersea, and note addressed to Cyril Flower, First Baron Battersea, tipped to flyleaf. About fine with just a touch of dullness to spine. 319 / 323 pp., frontispiece in first volume. The recipient, Lord Battersea (Cyril Flower) was a patron of the arts, friendly with the Pre-Raphaelites, and probably gay (he had strong affections for men, and his wife, Constance, alludes to 'misplaced friendships' when discussing him in her memoirs; he also featured in a gay scandal in 1902). Milnes, like Battersea, was a member of Parliament, not a bad poet (Matthew Arnold had kind words for him), and his unsurpassed collection of erotic literature is the foundation of that collection at the British Library. Like Battersea, he was a patron of the arts and an avid supporter of the poets Tennyson, Swinburne and the author Coventry Patmore. Near Fine.

Hartford, CT: American Publishing Co, 1876. Condition: Light wear to extremities; shelf wear & lower corners starting to show; else a near fine copy. Large 8vo. xvi. 17-569 pp. Black & white illustrations. Introduction by Mark Twain. A cancelled check from the Ophir Silver Mining Company, dated July 4, 1878, laid in. Publisher's brown cloth with black & gilt stamping; housed in brown custom folder and slipcase with printed paper title label to spine. The author's manuscript was published by his old friend, Mark Twain. This excellent history discusses every phase of the epic rise of the Comstock. There are chapters on the humorous events that led to the initial rush of 1859 after the discovery of silver and on the early societal life. Wright, who knew intimately the special technological advances which were required to work North America's first truly deep mines, presents details about them long ignored by others. There are thorough reports on the effects of the Big Bonanza silver discoveries and Virginia City's development in the early 1870's up to the time of publication. Lively anecdotes on most any subject, informal biographical sketches of prominent mining men and riceless original wood engravings are included. The book was not well received in his day, but now it rates among the top dozen all-tim Nevada books." - Paher, Nevada 2220. [Attributes: First Edition]

Lower right corner of wraps reinforced on verso with old cello tape; else, original and free of restoration. Housed in custom 2-part slipcase with leather label. A sound, serviceable copy. Overall, very good or better. THE FIRST PUBLISHED HISTORY OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY. A nice copy of the second issue of the first history of the County of Los Angeles from 1876 written by the three men who were in the best position to do so at the time. Written the year the railroad connected San Francisco to Los Angeles via the Newhall Pass, this small book demonstrated Los Angeles County was to become a burgeoning metropolis like the more populous and better known Bay area city center. A very fragile production, which explains its scarcity today. Publications in thin wraps such as this weren't meant to survive for decades and certainly not centuries. A fine and desirable collectible for the novice and advanced collector alike. Zamorano Select 112, Cowan II; pp. 669, Howes; W-110 Please email any questions -.

Longmans, Green, 1876. Thick 8vo. xviii, 576 pp. Frontis., 4 plates, 23 maps (1 folding). Original crimson black printed cloth; spine faded. Very good, pleasing copy. First edition. "Edmund Nevill, regarded for a short time as the preeminent selenographer in Britain, provided a firm basis for later lunar studies. . . . Nevill initiated a serious study of the Moon with a 6-in. refractor and a 9.5-in. . . . from his residence in Hampstead, London. His voluminous book on the Moon was an important text, though based largely on the work of Beer and Madler and in places merely a translation of Der Mond, it skillfully integrated all contemporary data to produce one of the most useful lunar reference works available in the English language and established Nevill's Place in the history of astronomy." - Thomas Hockey (ed.), Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers, p. 825. "Neville, who wrote under the name Neison, published the first observer's guide to the moon written in English, and it is still one of the best. It contains a wealth of detail on more than 500 named features, as well as a map in 22 sections, to the scale of 24" to the moon's diameter. The map is not entirely original, being based on that of Beer and Madler, but it is much easier to use than the original. In addition to the map, there are several enlarged drawings of craters of special interest, such as Gassendi and Maginus, and five chromolithographs to show the effect of changing illumination on the lunar landscape." - Linda Hall Library, The Face of the Moon. #21. An unfolded example. Large broasheet supplement, 26-5/8" x 19-1/2" (ca 67.5cm x 50cm); on newsprint, printed both sides. Verbatim trial transcript covering two days of testimony and cross-examination in the murder trial of Thomas Munley, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (aka "Molly Maguires") who would eventually be convicted for the murder of Welsh mine foreman Thomas Sanger. Among the witnesses quoted in the present transcript are Munley's father (who is interviewed at length); fellow miners of both Welsh and Irish extraction including Patrick Brennan, Thomas Williams, Edward Pierce, Luke Richardson; and other residents of the various mining towns in the Shenandoah coal district. A portion of the testimony deals directly with the operations of PInkerton spy James McParlan, who had infiltrated Mollies under the alias "James McKenna." Text concludes at lower right, with catch line: "Concluded in regular edition." Verso contains several dozen ads, including one for a pamphlet version of the trial, issued under the sensational title Among the Assassins! The Molly Maguires and Their Victims (Pottsville: 1876). Munley was hanged, along with nine other Mollies, on "Black Thursday," June 21, 1877; irregularities in his (and others') prosecution remain controversial to the present day … [Click Below for Full Description]
