Whittaker, Frederick
New York: Sheldon & Company, 1876. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Octavo size, 658 pp. The first biography to be published after the death of General George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876), who famously met his end at the infamous Battle of the Little Big Horn, during which one-third of the men under his command also perished. Controversy ensued over responsibility for the disaster, which continues to this day. As Tal Luther states in "Custer High Spots": "in addition to being the first, [this work] is important as it served to stir up public controversy over the battle and the possible dereliction of Custer's ranking subordinates, Major Marcus A. Reno and Captain Frederick W. Benteen" (ibid, p. 11). Having been one of the better-known of the Civil War generals, his life was of immense interest to those of the day. The volume is divided into chapters following his youth, army training and career, through "The Last Campaign" and closing with eulogies which fed the romanticized version of "Custer's Last Stand". The condition of the volume is outstanding; the cloth clean with a minimum of wear, the gilt and black used for decorations bright and unrubbed, the interior clean and bright; a wonderful example of a book over 140 years old which looks almost as fresh as the day it left the bindery. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full green cloth, the front board with two decorative horizontal borders in black and gilt debossed around the lettering, these borders serve to divide the front board into three sections each of which have black stamped decorations, resting on top of … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Twain, Mark [Samuel L. Clemens]
London: Chatto & Windus, 1876. First edition. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt with black design, yellow endpapers. Housed in a burgundy quarter morocco slipcase with chemise. An excellent, about Fine copy, fresh and unrestored, scarce thus. One of the classic American novels, Twain's bildungsroman follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer - and his friend Huck Finn -- in St. Petersburg, Missouri told with Twain's characteristic and unmatchable wit and humor. It would become his best-selling book and its sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is arguably the greatest American novel of all time. "Mr. Samuel Clemens has taken the boy of the Southwest for the hero of his new book... and has presented him with a fidelity to circumstance which loses no charm by being realistic in the highest degree, and which gives incomparably the best picture of life in that region as yet known to fiction" (Contemporary Atlantic Monthly Review). Chicago: Baskin, Forster & Co., 1876 Published to coincide with the Centennial this ia a massive 17 3/4 x 14 3/4 x 1 3/4" thick atlas of 462 pp. This copy has been recased with new spine and end papers. What makes this atlas special is the condition of its contents. I have handled a lot of atlases in the past 30+ years and the interior is as nice or nicer than any from this era I have handled. There is occasional finger soil to the margins and the last several leaves [text only] have a crease. Otherwise the pages are so bright and clean as to stand out in comparison. My veteran book binder was quite impressed with the condition of the maps. The original covers are chipped but still quite presentable.

New York City - Robert Loudon after Thoman Sulman, 1876
1876. NEW YORK CITY, BUSTLING PORT CITY IN THE YEAR OF AMERICA'S CENTENNIAL "New York from Bergen Hill: Hoboken", magnificent wood engraving by Robert Loudon after a drawing by Thoman Sulman, published 19 August 1876 as "extra supplement" to the Illustrated London News. Coloured by a later hand. Size (view) 49 x 115 cm (frame: 70 x 140 cm.) Large and detailed view of New York City issued in the year of America's centennial. This is a fabulous and commanding view of much of Manhattan Island from the perspective Bergen Hill in Hoboken, NJ. The engraving shows Central Park, the early stages of urban expansion on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side and an early snapshot of the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, where the two towers on either side of the River have been completed, but there is no progress shown yet connecting the towers across the East River. New York is depicted as a busy port city, with a variety of boats active in the Hudson and East Rivers. Brooklyn, Queens and Northern New Jersey are also shown. Woodblock engraving was the medium for newspaper illustration until photography superseded it. The woodblocks were carved, and had the disadvantage of having a limited life before they were worn beyond use. This resulted in a limited number of copies of the illustrations. It was not technically feasible for the blocks to be larger than 3" without splitting in the press, so larger illustrations were printed by a series of contiguous woodblocks, which is the case with this engraving. Price: Euro 4.950,- (incl. frame)

On the Steps of the Capitol (The Garland Seller) - Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1876
1876. ON THE STEPS OF THE CAPITOL (THE GARLAND SELLER) Ets van de hand van Paul Rajon naar het schilderij (Opus CXXXII) van Lourens Alma-Tadema. Vervaardigd in 1876. Met potlood gesigneerd door Alma-Tadema en Rajon. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 11 x 22 cm. Prijs: Euro 650,- (incl. lijst)
