Housed in a burgundy quarter morocco slipcase with chemise. An excellent, about Fine copy, fresh and unrestored, scarce thus. One of the classic American novels, Twain's bildungsroman follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer - and his friend Huck Finn -- in St. Petersburg, Missouri told with Twain's characteristic and unmatchable wit and humor. It would become his best-selling book and its sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is arguably the greatest American novel of all time. "Mr. Samuel Clemens has taken the boy of the Southwest for the hero of his new book... and has presented him with a fidelity to circumstance which loses no charm by being realistic in the highest degree, and which gives incomparably the best picture of life in that region as yet known to fiction" (Contemporary Atlantic Monthly Review). [California]
[Petaluma], 1876. Very good.. 31 leaves. Large folio. Original maroon half calf and cloth, manuscript label on front cover. Corners and spine heavily worn, some loss to spine ends. Internally clean and highly legible. Large ledger detailing delinquent taxes for Petaluma for three years, listing names and values of personal property including real estate. Among these are entries for several Chinese. By 1860 Petaluma had developed a thriving little Chinatown which housed about 500 people, together with shops and laundries. As with elsewhere in California and across the United States, the Chinese began to face greater and greater hostilities through the 1860s and 1870s, culminating in the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Many of the early Chinese immigrants to California are unrecorded and unremarked by history, making this tax ledger an important source for the Chinese community in Petaluma. The records for 1873-1874 list seventy-seven delinquent tax accounts, including one Chinese named Tung On who had personal property valued at $200. The following year lists sixty-two delinquent accounts, including one Chinese named Tie Woo (listed elsewhere as Tigh Woo, but presumably the same man), who had personal property valued at $500. There is a sharp increase in delinquencies for 1875-1876, with 169 entries, including ten Chinese and one woman, a Miss O'Gorman, all with property valued anywhere from $50 to $600. Interestingly, there is also a listing for an African Chapel on Lot 276 in Petaluma. None of the Chinese are noted as owning real estate. Each year is followed by a … [Click Below for Full Description]

1876. For sale is an exceptional example of a rare and important title, being Cross and Self-Fertilisation of Plants, by Charles Darwin. First Edition, First Issue. Published by John Murray, London, 1876. Collated as complete. 1 diagram; 109 tables; three-line errata facing p.p. viii. Bound in the publisher's original deep green cloth, with stamping in blind and the title and publisher's name in gilt to the spine. Original black-coated endpapers. Bookseller's blindstamp to the head of the FFEP. Externally it really is as fine as one could expect; the cloth is crisp and bright and the hinges are excellent. Internally, a delightfully clean example, with only a jot of the most insignificant spotting to a few leaves. The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilization in the Vegetable Kingdom is a presentation and analysis of Darwin's research on evolution in plants. Based on the theory of natural selection presented in his seminal 1859 text On the Origin of Species, Darwin believed that cross-pollinated plants would produce biologically superior offspring to those of self-pollinated plants. To test his hypothesis, Darwin conducted a breadth of studies using controlled fertilization, the results of which are presented in this volume. He ultimately concluded that cross-pollination yielded fitter offspring, thus making an important, decisive argument against the usefulness of inbreeding. Overall, this wonderful volumes comes very highly recommended indeed, and one could not hope for a better example of this rare edition. [Attributes: First Edition]

Carroll, Lewis (Dodgson, Charles
London: Macmillan and Co, 1876. Henry Holiday. Hard Cover. First Edition. Very Good. Illustrated by Henry Holiday. First edition, first printing, with "baker" on page 83 and a single leaf of publisher's advertisement. Publisher's decorative light tan boards with illustrations by Holiday in black, lettered in black. A very good copy, with some wear and light fraying to spine ends, corners lightly worn, some faint evidence of an early glue repair to the lower spine, otherwise a bright, sturdy and fresh attractive copy. In this poem, Carroll returns to the setting of "Jabberwocky," the nonsense poem that was published as part of his 1872 novel Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There. Specifically, "The Hunting of the Snark" tells the story of ten sailors, each of whose name begins with the letter B, who are in search of a fearsome creature known as the "snark" which they fear may be an especially dangerous sort known as a "boojum." Like "Jabberwocky," this poem is filled with fantastical adventures, impossible scenarios, and gibberish words. [Attributes: First Edition]

1876. Notre blog : https://librairie-trois-plumes.blogspot.fr/ Notre mail : benoit@troisplumes.fr Théodore Vuillermedunand, Historique de la maison Goelzer (manufacture d'appareils à gaz) de 1855 à 1876. Paris, Imprimerie Moderne (Barthier), 1876. Grand in-8, 384p.

Thus he showed that inbreeding may have severe detrimental effects on progeny. Eliot, George [Mary Ann Evans]
Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1876. "George Eliot" [Mary Ann Evans]. DANIEL DERONDA. In Four Volumes. Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1876. First Edition in Book Form. With erratum slip in Vol. III. Original dark maroon publisher's cloth, lettered in gilt. A VERY GOOD untrimmed set, entirely untouched, with excellent eye appeal. The book edition is far more rare in commerce than the parts edition; we've seen very few four-volume sets as nice as this one since 1993, when we first began dealing in high spot Victorian Fiction. Owner inscription to front paste-down of Volume I. A touch of minor wear and slight fade to all spines, Vol. III has some minor abrasion to the front cover, some corners gently bumped. Contents in excellent condition, inner hinges all tight and intact. DANIEL DERONDA was George Eliot's final novel, the only one she set in contemporary Victorian society. The work's complex and sophisticated mixture of social satire and moral deliberation, in tandem with its empathetic portrayal of Jewish ideas and ideals, became the final emphatic (and shamelessly subversive) social statement by one of Victorian Fiction's greatest literary giants. Adapted many times for stage and screen, DANIEL DERONDA was most recently (2002) the subject of a three-part multi-award winning BBC miniseries written by Andrew Davies and directed by Tom Hooper. A lovely well-matched set.. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Whittaker, Frederick
New York: Sheldon & Company, 1876. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Octavo size, 658 pp. The first biography to be published after the death of General George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876), who famously met his end at the infamous Battle of the Little Big Horn, during which one-third of the men under his command also perished. Controversy ensued over responsibility for the disaster, which continues to this day. As Tal Luther states in "Custer High Spots": "in addition to being the first, [this work] is important as it served to stir up public controversy over the battle and the possible dereliction of Custer's ranking subordinates, Major Marcus A. Reno and Captain Frederick W. Benteen" (ibid, p. 11). Having been one of the better-known of the Civil War generals, his life was of immense interest to those of the day. The volume is divided into chapters following his youth, army training and career, through "The Last Campaign" and closing with eulogies which fed the romanticized version of "Custer's Last Stand". The condition of the volume is outstanding; the cloth clean with a minimum of wear, the gilt and black used for decorations bright and unrubbed, the interior clean and bright; a wonderful example of a book over 140 years old which looks almost as fresh as the day it left the bindery. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full green cloth, the front board with two decorative horizontal borders in black and gilt debossed around the lettering, these borders serve to divide the front board into three sections each of which have black stamped decorations, resting on top of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Both wrappers are preserved on the 1877 and 1878 but NOT the 1876. The binding is in excellent condition - both the green boards and the green leather corners and spine.I 'm afraid my photos don't do it justice The title and year are in gilt to the spine. The 1876 is in excellent condition -clean and unmarked save for a little foxing to the page edges and one or two pages - nothing of any consequence. The wrappers on the 1877 are complete with just the odd minor mark and blemish. The first three or four pages and the last two or three pages are somewhat foxed but the contents are otherwise in excellent condition. The front wrapper on the 1878 is somwhat discoloured and marked, the back wrapper much better. The contents are in excellent condition with just a little foxing to the page edges.
