Women's Centennial Committees [ed. Mrs. E.D. Gillespie]
Philadelphia: Women's Centennial Executive Committee, [1876]. First edition. Original brown publisher's cloth binding embossed in gilt and black to spine and front board featuring the motto "E Pluribus Unum" [From Many, One]. All edges stained red. Spine gently rolled and some bubbling to cloth of boards. Brown coated endpapers. Internally complete and pleasing; a surprisingly clean copy without the spatter or soiling typically associated with cookery texts. Includes a loosely inserted presentation slip at the front "With the compliments of the Author." With a modest presence at institutions and only one other copy on the market (both in this shop), the present work documenting the intersection of women's domestic labor and activism has become quite scarce, especially in this condition. The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 -- the very first official World's Fair hosted by the U.S. -- took place in Philadelphia from May 10-November 10 of that year. Overlapping the Centennial of the Declaration of Independence, the event took on additional significance to the women's right's movement, thanks to Susan B. Anthony and the NWSA's disruption of Centennial events at Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Rights of Women was read and distributed on July 4. While Anthony orchestrated this important historical moment, her collaborator Elizabeth Cady Stanton formed the Women's Centennial Executive Committee to ensure that women had a presence at the World's Fair events. Beginning three years prior, in 1873, the committee was "formally recognized by the United States gov … [Click Below for Full Description]

Reverend Canon [Thomas] McClatchie
Shanghai, London: American Presbyterian Mission Press, Trubner & Co., 1876. First edition in English of the I-Ching, the ancient Chinese book of divination, sometimes attributed to Confucius but actually much earlier, possibly with origins in the second millennium and so the most ancient text of Chinese Civilization. OCLC lists but eight copies worldwide. In McClatchie's view Qian and Kun represented the "God of Heathendom. Qian or his Male portion... and Kun or his Female portion .... These two, he goes on to say, "are enclosed in the circle or ring... known as the Supreme Ultimate or Great One, from which all things are generated." His contemporaries "ridiculed this decidedly sexual view (Shchutskii described it as the product of "pseudoscientific delirium"), but recent work by other scholars suggests its essential validity. (Richard J. Smith, "How the Book of Changes arrived in the West"). This copy very handsomely bound by Bennett of New York about seventy years ago in grained sienna morocco with title & author in double gilt ruled spine compartments; tooled hubs; top edge gilt. "Shanghai 1876" and owner's name to foot of spine. Preliminaries slightly foxed. xiii (vii -xiii of which are plates),[i],xvii,455, [i] (errata). Chinese and English on opposite pages. Marbled endpapers. List of other titles by Darwin on verso of title page. Errata slip laid in following "Contents". "(Darwin's report) on experiments conducted on over 60 different species of plants, where he used controlled pollinations in order to produce self-fertilised and cross-fertilised descendants. Through growth experiments of this progeny, he concluded that self-fertilised progeny performed poorer in most species and for most traits measured. Thus he showed that inbreeding may have severe detrimental effects on progeny. While this idea was accepted by many, e.g. plant and animal breeders, Darwin's book provided overwhelming experimental support for this idea. This book has remained the starting point for the study of inbreeding and is cited in scientific papers to this effect to this day." A few scattered tiny foxing marks on verso of free endpapers and on adjacent pages, small piece missing from bottom corner of page leaf 399/400, some gilt lettering and decorarion on the spine has faded slightly (not on spine label), darkening to top of text block, light to moderate edge wear to boards/corners, small areas of flaking to leather on hinges, light wear/very small bump at top of spine, a small bump at top edge of both boards near hinges, red leather on spine and somewhat at corners has faded to light brown.. Boston: Printed Under Direction of the Clerk of the Court, 1876. 12mo, printed brown wrappers. 141 pp. The official account of the trial of the Jefferson Borden mutineers, held in the Circuit Court of the United States, District of Massachusetts. In the spring of 1875, the vessel Jefferson Borden-built on the Kennebunk River in Maine-departed from New Orleans and was making way for London under the command of Captain William M. Patterson of Edgecomb, Maine carrying a cargo of cotton-seed oil cake. Seaman George Miller, a Russian, had been put in irons for 48 hours for his insubordinate behavior just a few days into the voyage. On the night of April 20th, 1875, Miller struck Corydon Patterson-the captain's brother and ship mate-over the head with an iron bar, killing him immediately. Two ship-men-Ephraim Clark and John Glew-assisted Miller in dumping the mate's body overboard. Additionally, Clark killed the Captain's cousin, Charles Patterson, throwing him overboard as well. The Captain, suspicious of what was transpiring outside of his cabin that night, waited until the morning to investigate the scene. With the help of the steward, the Captain was able to wound the three mutineers with a shotgun and a revolver and imprison them. The ship eventually reached London, where the mutineers received medical attention, then were sent back to Boston to stand trial. Clark and Miller were convicted of murder and sentenced to be hanged; Glew was sentenced to 10 years in prison for mutiny. Following the trial, however, Captain Patterson's inhumane treatment of his crew came to light, w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Poona [Pune]: Published by the Gov.t Office, 1876. INDIA – BHARUCH [BROACH], GUJARAT / BILINGUAL (ENGLISH / HINDI) REVENUE MAP: Map of the Broach District, Province Guzerat, compiled from the Village Maps of the Guzerat Revenue Survey. - Photozincograph with original outline hand colour, dissected into 18 sections and mounted upon original linen, folding into original marbled boards (Very Good, resplendent original colours, just some light creasing to some panel edges and a mild stain in lower-right corner), 101 x 69 cm (40 x 27 inches). This an extremely rare revenue survey map of the Broach (today Bharuch) District, of Gujarat, India. It was made under the auspices of Noel Beyts, the Superintendent of Revenue for Gujarat, and is based upon original mapping conducted especially for tax assessment and collection purposes. The map was printed by the Bombay Presidency Government’s press in Poona (Pune) in 1876 and notably features text in both English and Hindustani (the immediate precursor to modern Hindi), and sports original outline colour in resplendent hues made from hand-ground dyes used in the textile industry. Broach (Bharuch) has since ancient times been one of the wealthiest ports along the west coat of India. The city strategically lies at the mouth of Narmada River, one of the key transport corridors onto the heart of India. The surrounding district was long one of the world’s most productive cotton-growing areas and the Broach is famed for its Bandhani textiles. Lewis Carroll
1876. About this Item: Carroll, Lewis [Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge] AN EASTER GREETING TO EVERY CHILD WHO LOVES `ALICE.'[Oxford: for the Author, 1876] Single leaf, folded to four pages, as issued. First edition, first printing, and rare in the correct first printing.Fine copy. Williams & Madan once described the first printing of this little leaflet as "the rarest of the Carroll items excepting the first issue ALICE." When a few more copies came to light, he revised his earlier statement. When examples are found they are usually Mac Millan's post-1880 reprints or later printings done for Dodgson. This copy has all the measurements and readings (including the critical "my" in Roman type face at line 12 on the third page) and is onlaid paper bearing E. Towgood's watermark. While later printings done for Dodgson are sometimes found on Towgood paper, none of the later versions share all of the characteristics of both the text and paper. Copies were intended to be inserted into the specially bound presentation copies of THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK, but Dodgson also gave away individual copies to his young friends. This charming letter vividly captures how children seethe world, touches on Dodgson's belief that the laughter of children are at least as holy an utterance as mournful prayers muttered by adults in churches on Sundays, and he ends his missive with the Easter-appropriate sentiment that death leads to a bright and joyous afterlife not unlike the dawn that greets every child at their window when they awaken each morning. A happy memento of Dodgson's affection for the young re … [Click Below for Full Description]

CENTENNIAL, 1876 THE SENTIMENTAL SONG BOOK Original 4.25" x 6" Book- in original condition - made without covers Printed by C.M. Loomis, Grand Rapids, MichiganDated 1876 Julia Ann Moore, the "Sweet Singer of Michigan" (1847-1920) was America's challenger to Scotland's William McGonagall as the 19th Century's master of bad poetry in English -- a requirement for contention being, of course, that the poet couldn't be working tongue-in-cheek. Ogden Nash dedicated his first book to her, crediting to her hopeless verse his decision to become a "great bad poet" rather than a "bad good poet." In "Huckleberry Finn," Mark Twain based the character Emmeline Grangerford on Moore. Born Julia Ann Davis, she started writing poetry in her mid-teens, mostly in response to the deaths of children she knew, though (like McGonagall) any newspaper account of disaster could inspire her. At age 17, she married Frederick Moore, a farmer. Moore's first book of verse, "The Sentimental Song Book" was published in 1876 by Loomis in Grand Rapids, and quickly went into a second edition. A copy ended up in the hands of James Ryder of Cleveland, who republished it under the title "The Sweet Singer of Michigan Salutes the Public," sending out review copies to newspapers across the country, wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Burton, Richard Francis, English explorer and diplomat (1821-1890).
1876. 3 pp. Small 8vo. To the publisher and author George Bentley (1828-95), complaining that his "letter has certainly miscarried. I accept the conditions provided we print at once [...]". He asks for an "agreement to settle at the end of six months or a year and to allow me a dozen copies for friends. Could we manage to print without destroying the two old volumes. Of course you can take them to pieces and I will have them rebound when you have done with them [...]". He continues, "For corrections a single revise will suffice. Kindly let me have proofs in duplicate accompanied by the manuscript - which saves time [...]." He asks his opinion on illustration, and repeats that he has sketches and photographs suggesting that "perhaps the best way would be to prefix one to each volume, say Sir Charles Napier to vol. I and the photo of a Sindi girl to vol. 2 [...]". He offers to send them off at once if it suits.
