Thomas Hardy
New York: 1876. Any item can be returned for any reason within a reasonable time. CA sales tax (7.25%) applies. Domestic shipping is free. International shipping, $35.00. Hardy, Thomas. THE HAND OF ETHELBERTA. NY: Henry Holt & Company, 1876. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. A NEAR FINE copy in the primary publisher's binding of cream cloth (with endpaper ads dated May 20th, 1876, the same month as publication of Hardy's two-volume London first edition). Although there is slight foxing to the upper cover, this example is virtually unworn and without any of the spine toning which is almost always found on these fragile American pale cream colored bindings. THE HAND OF ETHELBERTA, Hardy's fifth novel has rarely been accepted as anything more than a minor achievement. Yet it is the bridge between his masterpieces FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD and THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE. Ethelberta's "problem" has always been that she was Hardy's attempt to break free of his Wessex roots and create a more urban "society" protagonist. His writing in this novel is still brilliant but the setting and plot are such that this brilliance is apparently not so easily seen. [Attributes: First Edition]

Twain, Mark [Samuel L. Clemens]
London: Chatto & Windus, 1876. First edition. First edition, preceding the American edition by six months. Handsomely bound in modern full blue morocco, raised bands on the spine, intricate gilt in the spine compartment and boards, marbled end papers, top-edge gilt. One of the classic American novels, Twain's bildungsroman follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer - and his friend Huck Finn -- in St. Petersburg, Missouri told with Twain's characteristic and unmatchable wit and humor. It would become his best-selling book and its sequel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," is arguably the greatest American novel of all time. "Mr. Samuel Clemens has taken the boy of the Southwest for the hero of his new book... and has presented him with a fidelity to circumstance which loses no charm by being realistic in the highest degree, and which gives incomparably the best picture of life in that region as yet known to fiction." (Contemporary Atlantic Monthly Review). Fine. Fine.

[MOLLY MAGUIRES]
The Daily Miners' Journal, 1876. Verbatim trial transcript covering two days of testimony and cross-examination in the murder trial of Thomas Munley, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (aka "Molly Maguires") who would eventually be convicted for the murder of Welsh mine foreman Thomas Sanger. Among the witnesses quoted in the present transcript are Munley's father (who is interviewed at length); fellow miners of both Welsh and Irish extraction including Patrick Brennan, Thomas Williams, Edward Pierce, Luke Richardson; and other residents of the various mining towns in the Shenandoah coal district. A portion of the testimony deals directly with the operations of PInkerton spy James McParlan, who had infiltrated Mollies under the alias "James McKenna." Text concludes at lower right, with catch line: "Concluded in regular edition." Verso contains several dozen ads, including one for a pamphlet version of the trial, issued under the sensational title Among the Assassins! The Molly Maguires and Their Victims (Pottsville: 1876). Munley was hanged, along with nine other Mollies, on "Black Thursday," June 21, 1877; irregularities in his (and others') prosecution remain controversial to the present day. The present broadsheet unrecorded in OCLC and not noted in commerce. Large broasheet supplement, 26-5/8" x 19-1/2" (ca 67.5cm x 50cm); on newsprint, printed both sides. Karl Baedeker Leipsic, 1876. First edition. xvi, 610pp, 17 (of18) maps (some coloured), 43 plans, panorama of Jerusalem, 10 engravings, inner hinges slightly loose, LACKS FOLDING MAP before title-page, some very minor spotting throughout, previous owner's book label; publisher's red cloth gilt, worn and faded; a fair copy First edition Splendid description of primitive conditions 110 years ago. Archaeology in the Holy Land was in its infancy. Communications were rudimentary. The construction of the first railway from Jaffa to Jerusalem was authorised in 1875 but it was doubtful whether it would pay as there was no trade of any importance in Southern Palestine and the yearly influx of pilgrims was of short duration. The only modern roads in Syria were the diligence routes from Beirut to Damascus and the road from Jaffa to Jerusalem. The second edition was not issued until 1894. Dickinson, Anna
Manuscript material, April 28, 1876, October 28, 1878. Dickinson, Anna Elizabeth (1842-1932), Full-length photographic portrait carte-de-visite, with two signed quotes on separate pieces of white card stock, one reading, "Liberty! Truly yours, Anna E. Dickinson," (dated 10/28/78) and the other, "I am glad to do what you desire, -- & so to sign myself Truly Yours, Anna E. Dickinson," (dated 4/28/76). All three items, the portrait by Sarony and the two signed and dated quotes are mounted with hinges on a mat. Condition of all three items is fine. A Quaker and Philadelphia native by birth, Anna Elizabeth Dickinson was a radical firebrand orator and out-spoken advocate for the rights of African Americans and women at a time when such ideas were incendiary and almost never spoken of by women, unless that woman happened to be Anna Elizabeth Dickinson. She even criticized Abraham Lincoln for being too moderate on slavery. Her advocacy for women went well beyond the right to vote and approached same-sex liberation issues. William Lloyd Garrison was the first to publish one of her essays in The Liberator. She actively campaigned for radical (pro-abolition) and successful Republican Party candidates. She was the first woman to address the United States Congress in 1864, where she received a standing ovation. She lived out her days in up-state New York in seclusion.

Milnes, Richard Monckton (Lord Houghton)
John Murray. Published 1876, 2 volumes, full pebbled midnight blue morocco gilt, with bookplates of Constance Battersea, and note addressed to Cyril Flower, First Baron Battersea, tipped to flyleaf. About fine with just a touch of dullness to spine. 319 / 323 pp., frontispiece in first volume. The recipient, Lord Battersea (Cyril Flower) was a patron of the arts, friendly with the Pre-Raphaelites, and probably gay (he had strong affections for men, and his wife, Constance, alludes to 'misplaced friendships' when discussing him in her memoirs; he also featured in a gay scandal in 1902). Milnes, like Battersea, was a member of Parliament, not a bad poet (Matthew Arnold had kind words for him), and his unsurpassed collection of erotic literature is the foundation of that collection at the British Library. Like Battersea, he was a patron of the arts and an avid supporter of the poets Tennyson, Swinburne and the author Coventry Patmore. Near Fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
