Mit Stempeln am Titel, Vortitel und im Schnitt: „Ambassador College Library. Pasadena, California".

Twain, Mark (Samuel L. Clemens)
American Publishing Company, Hartford. First edition, first printing, first state (with "THE" on half title in 10-point rather than 14-point type) of one of the great masterpieces of American literature. Octavo, original blue cloth, peach endpapers, top edge gilt. In very good condition with some very light rubbing to the cloth. Peach endpapers, printed on wove paper, with preliminary matter paginated [I]-XVI and front and rear triple flyleaves of laid paper. BAL 3369. Johnson, 27-30. MacDonnell, 39-40. MacBride, 40. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A nice example of an important book. Popular and controversial at the time of publication in 1876, Mark Twain's masterpiece The Adventures of Tom Sawyer has been adapted into dozens of film, television and theatrical productions. The quintessential tale of American boyhood established one of the most memorable characters in American literature who appeared in three later sequels including Twain's other most notable work, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. "The first novel Mark Twain wrote without a co-author, Tom Sawyer is also his most clearly autobiographical novel enlivened by extraordinary and melodramatic events, it is otherwise a realistic depiction of the experiences, people and places that Mark Twain knew as a child" (Rasmussen, 459). (Oscar Wilde) Struck, Hermann
nd. Photo gravure on paper; paper 11-3/4 x 9 inches, plate 5-3/4 x 4 inches. 1 vols. Delicate and Sympathetic Portrait of the Young Wilde. Hermann Struck (1876-1944)is recognized for his extensive landscapes and portraits of noted personalities in early 20th century Europe, including Herzl, Ibsen, Nietzsche, Freud, Einstein, Rutenberg et al. He was born into an Orthodox Berlin family and subsequently studied at the Berlin Academy under Max Koner and Hans Meyer. He joined the Zionist movement at an early age and in 1903, after several study trips throughout Europe, he visited Palestine, and on his way back to Germany stopped in Vienna, where he was introduced to Herzl. It was this meeting that inspired the famous portrait etching of the Zionist leader. During World War I Struck served with the German Army in Lithuania, where he came in contact with Eastern European Jews and embraced their way of life. In 1923 he returned to Palestine and settled in Haifa. By now a master of the craft of etching, Struck taught graphic techniques to such fellow artists as Chagall, Liebermann, Israels, Corinth, Ury and Budko. His book, Die Kunst des Radierens (1923), a popular guide book for artists and connoisseurs, provides both technical explanations and practical instruction. Struck excelled as a portraitist. He also recorded landscapes, Jewish and Arab types and scenes from the Jewish diaspora. He spent time in England, and became a member of the London Societ of Painters, Etchers and Engravers. Matted and Framed.

Boston: American Publishing Company. rough. The rare first edition, first printing A worn copy only, but still the very rare first edition, first printing. Not often seen, with most collectors settling for a second or third issue (the first three issues were all published in 1876, with that date appearing on the title page). This copy can be distinguished as the earliest issue by the wove paper and by the frontis illustration being blank on its other side (on second and later issues, the verso of the frontis has the half title page printed on it). Condition, however, is not good. The blank endpapers and half-title are missing, so that this copy starts with the frontis illustration, followed by the title page. Endpapers at back are present. All other pages present, and in good reading condition. Book has been expertly repaired and rebacked, so it is a least now a solid copy, but appears worn and aged as pictured. Nathaniel Hawthorne
I am selling this 22-volume collection by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Some volumes were published by James R. Osgood and Company, Boston (1876-1878), which became Houghton, Osgood and Company, Riverside Press, Boston (1878-1879). Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of several prominent authors published by this company. The dimensions of the books are 6" by 4 ½" and are all clean with little if any foxing. I have perused each of the volumes but have not checked every page. Representative photos of pages are provided (photos 3-7) since all volumes had the same format. The binding on two books (Scarlet Letter and Twice Told Tales, Vol 1) will need some repair as seen in photos 7 & 8). Some of the titles have fallen off the spines as seen in the photo #1. Following is the list of titles Scarlet Letter - 1878 Snow - Image and other Twice Told Tales - 1876 Twice Told Tales - Vol 1, 1876 Twice Told Tales - Vol 2, 1876 Dolliver Romance and Other Pieces - 1879 Mosses from an Old Manse - Vol. 1 - 1876 Mosses from an Old Manse - Vol. 2 - 1876 A Wonder Book for Boys and Girls - 1879 Passages from American Note-Books of Nathaniel Hawthorne - Vol 1, 1876 Passages from American Note-Books of Nathaniel Hawthorne - Vol 2, 1876 Passages from English Note-Books of Nathaniel Hawthorne - Vol 1, 1876 Passages from English Note-Books of Nathaniel Hawthorne - Vol 2, 1876 Passages from French and Italian Note-Books - Vol 1, 1876 Passages from French and Italian Note-Books - Vol 2, 1876 Marble Faun or The Romance of Monte Beni - Vol 1, 1879 Marble Faun or The Romance of Monte Beni - Vol 2, 1879 The House of the S … [Click Below for Full Description]

John B. Duffey
Philadelphia, PA: T.S. Arthur & Son, Philadelphia. This pamphlet is in very good condition considering it is 142 years old. Bound in threads, paper was not produced with a hard cover. The last page has the most wear as you can see in the pictures. It is fragile and requires loving care to remain in staple condition. You are looking at a 72 page, very rare 142 year old voters pamphlet from the 1876 US Presidential elections. Created by John B. Duffey and published by T. S. Arthur & Son in 1876 in Philadelphia. The title being "ALL THE PRESIDENTS from WASHINGTON to GRANT" is in very good fragile condition considering it is 142 years old. Bound in threads, not produced with a hard cover. My research has taken me to find there are only 7 copies in the US. One copy is located in the Library of Congress, Washington DC. This is truly an historic treasure. I am asking a price I feel is negotiable and welcome your questions or concerns about ownership of this rare pamphlet. Your getting The Constitution of the United States in the last pages, this is also a bonus since our constitution has had so many changes over the years. The last page has the most wear and tear and you can see that the front is completely bare of any writings. These are the last two pictures in my photo lineup. Possible copyright status? The Library of Congress is unaware of any copyright restrictions for this item. Please look at the pictures for more details. EDGERLY, Albert Webster
Near Fine. Two handwritten manuscripts by Albert Webster Edgerly, the founder of the Ralstonism Movement, a late 19th Century movement that stressed a healthy diet, questionable science, and the use of personal magnetism to control others. The manuscripts consist of:1. All's Well That Ends Well: The Great Story of the Day! Handwritten manuscript novel. 19 signatures of 24 leaves, each totaling 904 numbered pages. The first signature lacks the first leaf (probably a cover leaf or title page) and the conjugate leaf (pages 39/40). Modest toning and foxing, mostly on the first and last leaf, a few hand corrections, but overall a clean and probably final draft manuscript copy, very good or better.A very long novel described in the first sentence as: "The history of a young lady during her three years course through the High School of Lynn; her first entrance and introduction to the Teachers; her opinion of the school and bright prospects for future happiness therein; her bright hopes clouded and obscured; her struggles for the right; despondency and recklessness, and the final, glorious end which awaited her after all her troubles." An extremely lengthy and melodramatic unpublished manuscript. Each of the 45 chapters (except the last) has a brief or several sentences long introduction summarizing what is in the chapter, which, in addition to the trials and tribulations of the heroine Minnie Marsh, includes such intriguing chapters such as Chapter 17: "George Marsh's visit to the Lawrence Cotton Factory. Death of George!"; Chapter 19: "Mr. Browning 'washes his hands of the whole … [Click Below for Full Description]

Strong, William E
Washington: 1876. First edition. 2 folding maps, 7 line drawings, and 7 tipped-in albumen photograph portraits with fine manuscript captions. 143 pp. 1 vols. 4to. In the Yellowstone: "Such fishing I have never had before" One of the earliest descriptions of Yellowstone, being the account of a hunting expedition to the north-western territories undertaken by the author and six officers (plus a contingent of enlisted men) including US Secretary of War Gen. Wm. W. Belknap and US Inspector General R. B. Marcy (who fell ill and nearly perished on the trip), as well as Gen. James W. Forsyth, Lt. G. C. Doane, Gen N. B. Sweitzer, and Col. George L. Gillespie, whose photographic portraits illustrate the book. The party traveled some 5,000 miles (by rail, stage, steamer, and horseback) in 53 days, seeking elk, deer, buffalo and other game as well as wild fowl; due to the season of the year game was not as plentiful as hoped, but the abundance of trout exceeded all expectations, and almost 500 large ones were caught (see pp. 54-57). Another impediment to hunting were the "hostile Sioux [who] were constantly lurking around in great numbers;" it was perhaps prophetic that on September 3, 1875, they met and were entertained by General George Armstrong Custer of the 7th Cavalry at Fort Lincoln just nine months before the Battle of Little Big Horn. As befitting "one of the most famous sportsmen in the country" Custer and his wife and sister lived in great state on the post, surrounded by the General's hunting trophies, of which there were many. Circumstances prevented Strong from retaining … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boyle, Frederick
London Chapman & Hall, 1876. First edition, 8vo, pp.viii, 332. A very good copy in original cloth. Corners slightly bumped. Frederick Boyle (1841-1914) was a journalist and barrister who went to Sarawak in 1863. This collection of "stories" is based on his extensive travels. Three, A Haunted Jungle; The Rajah's Diamond; [and] The Sarawak Gazette, are set in Sarawak and culled from Boyle's lengthy sojourn there. Another, Changhi, is set in Singapore. While reading like fiction, the author states in his dedication: "Were these stories fiction, I should not have ventured to put them under your numen. Some have been changed in characters, locality, or other detail; for one cannot always tell a fact in its plain reality. But I may conscientiously declare that no tale in the collection is without its solid foundation of truth." Jacob, Gertrude L.
London: Macmillan & Co., 1876. First edition, two volumes, pp.xii, 379; 393, two frontispieces, two coloured maps, one folding. A very good set in original cloth. Spines professionally restored. Tear to free end-paper of volume 2. The most detailed and perhaps the most interesting of the biographies of Brooke. Gertrude Jacob was the niece and adopted daughter of General Sir George Legrand Jacob, hero of the Indian mutiny and friend of James Brooke. He had been introduced to the Raja by W.H. Read, who describes their meeting in his book, "Play and Politics". In the preface to this book, General Jacob gives his own account of the circumstances of his visit to Sarawak. The author was able to consult several individuals who had known and worked with the First Raja as well as drawing on his letters and journals edited and earlier published by Templer, Keppel and Mundy. As a result her account was the first full life of Sir James, and has only been superceded in recent years by Nicholas Tarling's biography. The story of Reuben George, whom the Raja claimed as his son, and whose presence in Sarawak contributed to the dispute between Brooke and his nephew John Brooke Brooke, is among the facts first made public here.

THE STATE ARMS OF THE UNION Published in 1876 by the "father of lithographed books" Louis Prang, and illustrated by Henry Mitchell, State Arms of the Union contains a chromolithographed title page depicting the Great Seal of the United States and seven color plates with 45 state and territorial coats of arms. The seals are reproduced six or seven to a page, one side only. The book was likely published for the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. This slender hardcover volume was retired from the reference section of a public library and remains in reasonably good condition. The covers show fairly minor general wear; the front cover has two library marks in gold. The first page is detached and has library marks on the back and an hole-punch stamp of the library name at the top corner; there is another such stamp on one other page, slightly affecting one of the illustrations. The interior is otherwise quite nice, and all the other chromolithographs are in fine condition.
