Gustav Riemer
Hong Kong, Canton: (1876). A very pleasing and exceedingly scare lot of 9 original tissue albumen stereoview photographs taken and produced in China by Gustav Adolf Riemer, paymaster on a German navy vessel making a voyage around the world, who became renowned for his pioneering ethnographic photography. Dark brown paper mounts with tooled borders and rounded corners, measuring approximately 17,5 x 8,5 cm. Contained in a quality purpose-made box for protection, box measuring 20 x 10,5 x 3,5 cm. Occasional and ever-so-slight creasing, otherwise the lot has been painstakingly preserved, and thus has survived the ages in very good condition, all images retaining a crisp and strong impression. These stereoview photographs were produced by Gustav Adolf Riemer himself, one at a time by hand, and pre-date the series published by Johann Friedrich Stiehm in 1883. The present lot are tissue albumen photographs, made on a slightly thinner and transparent albumen paper, so that backlighting may be used to enhance depth into the image. These feature a thin card paper mount with metallic properties, especially rare. These have no back, which suggests that they were in production, not yet ready for distribution, as such may have come from Riemer's personal archive. The National Library of Australia holds at least one albumen stereocard from the same series, with the same mount, as are presented here. These foremost original format tissue stereoviews made by Riemer's own hands, are extremely rare. The State Library of New South Wales and the National Library of Australia each holds Riemer' … [Click Below for Full Description]

Good, some wears, tears, wet marks. This journal was published from 1876 to 1881. That two sets of two first years of publishing in one book 1876: 1-4 - 4 magazines 1877: 1-12 - 12 magazines A monthly magazine devoted to the game of chess and its literature. Published By M. Chigorin 1876-1877. St. Petersburg, Russia. Typography Of V. O. Demakov. The great Russian chess player, the founder of the national chess school Mikhail Ivanovich Chigorin for ten years published excellent magazines "Chess List" (1876-1881) and "Chess Bulletin" (1885-1887). He was there the main, and sometimes - the only author. Chigorin is the founder of the national chess school, an outstanding theorist, a contender for the world crown." How often we had to read and hear these words, which from frequent use got lost, began to seem empty banality. Meanwhile, Mikhail Ivanovich Chigorin (1850 - 1908) was really the brightest creative person. Gambling, captivating man, he for the sake of finding the truth of chess, solving the mysteries of an intricate debut or seemingly simple endgame position spared no effort and time. In those early years, universality has not yet become a "vital necessity" in chess, and therefore every major master had a distinct individual style, with its advantages and disadvantages. Russian champion believed in the dynamic potential of the figures, sought to open figure game, willingly donated material for the initiative. His powerful opponent Wilhelm Steinitz above all put unshakable positional values: the reliability of the pawn structure, the predominance in the center, the adva … [Click Below for Full Description]

PASTEUR, Louis
Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1876. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I can provide a link to many more photos. Just ask! 1876 1st ed Louis Pasteur Study of BEER Fermentation Microbiology Biere French An incredibly rare first edition of Pasteur's famous treaty on the ills of beer contamination and germ theory! Louis Pasteur was one of the most famous 19th-century French scientists known for his discoveries of vaccinations, pasteurizations, and fermentation. Pasteur's research and studies proved the existence of micro-organisms and how they are responsible for the sourness that comes with spoiled milk, wine, and beer. It was in the findings that Pasteur decided to dedicate more efforts to the study of alcoholic beverages. His book 'Etude Sur la Biere', which first appeared in 1876, was the culmination of Pasteur's findings of the diseases found in beer, techniques for pasteurization, and other aspects of beverage contamination. According to 'Heirs of Hippocrates', "In Pasteur's important study of fermentation, he discovered that contamination of beer was caused by microorganisms found in the air and not spontaneously generated as he had previously believed. He made possible the scientific processing of beer, wine, milk, and other perishable products." Phil. Farley
New York: Author, 1876. Criminals Of America or, The Tales Of The Lives Of Thieves. Enabling Every One To Be His Own Detective. With Portraits, Making A Complete Rogues' Gallery, by Phil. Farley, Detective. Published by the author in 1876. This is a first edition hardcover book measuring about 9" x 6" with 638 pages. The date on the copyright page is 1875 and the date on the title page is 1876. The title page also says Author's Edition, which means that Philip Farley published the book himself. Because this book is extremely difficult to find, other than modern copies printed after the copyright expired, this is most likely the first and only original edition of the book. Philip Farley was a 19th Century New York City Police Department detective. The overall condition of the book is GOOD. The cover has some wear and it has an attractive gilt and black embossed design. The binding is in good shape though the bottom 2" of the endpaper hinge is cracked. The pages are in good shape with very light intermittent foxing and there is a dampness stain on the top 1/4" of most pages. There are 46 chapters about the various criminals of the time and there are about the same number of full-page B&W photos of the criminals. Please take a look at the pictures. Thanks for looking! MACDONALD, George.
London: Strahan & Co., Publishers, 1876. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and illustration gilt to spine and front, brown coated endpapers. Ends and corners somewhat worn, cracking to hinges (more so to rear), inscription erased from head of title, small chip from fore-corner of front free endpaper repaired, still a bright attractive copy in very good condition overall. First edition, sole impression, of this scarce anthology of German and Italian poetry translated into English by noted Victorian fantasy writer George MacDonald, including the Spiritual Songs of Novalis. Also presented are English renditions of Luther, Schiller, Goethe, Heine, Petrarch, Milton (from his Italian), and others. MacDonald first encountered Novalis while cataloguing a library in 1842, and did issue a small privately printed edition of the Spiritual Songs alone in 1851 - these are very rare. MacDonald often used quotations from Novalis in his own books - his favourite was "Our life is no dream; but it ought to become one, and perhaps will", which he invokes in Phantastes, Lilith, and The Portent. William Raeper, MacDonald's biographer, declared: "The life and thought of Novalis so gripped MacDonald that he returned to him again and again, finding some deep affinity in the spiritual, sad and simple poetry of the afflicted German." London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1876. First edition, 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. xiv, [2], 261, [1]; vi, [2], 255 (i.e. 355), [1]; largely unopened; 4 wood-engraved plates and 2 folding maps, plus other wood-engraved illustrations in the text; a very good copy in a secondary (unrecorded?) binding of original blindstamped terracotta cloth stamped in gilt on spines. Sir Richard Burton (1821-90) is well known for his colorful career, recorded in numerous books and articles, as a diplomat, explorer and ethnographer. In 1861 he was appointed consul to Fernando Po (now Bioko) in Equatorial Guinea, remaining there for four years until he was transferred to Brazil. These volumes collate the expeditions and ethnographic observations made during his time there. In his preface, Burton writes that the 'plain truth' about the African has not been told in Britain, declaring that English occupation of West Africa has proved 'a remarkable failure'. First published in 1876, the second volume recounts a journey made from Fernando Po to Loango Bay and up the Congo River. Of particular interest is the penultimate chapter, 'The slaver and the missionary in the Congo River', in which Burton expresses his ambivalence towards a European presence in Africa. Volume 2 also includes appendices containing geographical observations. Penzer, p. 94; Spink 56; Casada 66: "This work covers the Fan people and the region of the lower Congo.". Contents in good condition overall, mainly very good, some foxing and sporadic soil and smudges to plates, first few pages (title page, contents page and versos of USA and PA maps) have some taping, and three or four instances of tape to edges of pages, usually not much of a stain and inch long or less, the majority of the plates are in good frameable condition; a few other tears to edges have been neatly and nearly invisibly mended. Boards shelfworn and show some cloth loss, spine reinforced neatly with cloth. Meadeville, Titusville get double-page treatment plus many litho plates. Lots in the way of early oil derrick imagery in the plates, too, since Crawford was near the epicenter of the Drake oil-rush. Good.
