Belford Brothers, Publishers, Toronto. [292pp]: [ii], 290 (last two leaves blank); gilt-decorated blue cloth; 186 x 130 x 26 mm. First Canadian edition of the author's unfinished novel, seen into print by his son Robert first earl of Lytton (who wrote under the name Owen Meredith), soon to become Viceroy of India (1876-80). With his 17pp prolix Dedication (dated 5 July 1875 at Cintra in Portugal) to Rev Benjamin Hall Kennedy, Cambridge Regius Professor of Greek responsible for correcting & revising the mss. Issued the same year both in Britain & the US (from different settings); the Canadian edition was printed in Toronto by Williams, Sleeth & MacMillan on Bay [active, 1872-82: Hulse, 280]. Wonderful bookseller's embossed stamp on ffe: "W.G. Sprague & Co. / Druggists / & / Booksellers / Flushing, Mich." Ex libris, Fred P. Button with his personalized plate on pastedown (dated in ink, 1891). Tracing Fred Button (considering the Flushing stamp) rules out the likelihood that he may have been the celebrated Prince Rupert photographer. Modest wear to extremities of spine, with a 1cm chip abraded from cloth along rear joint. A very scarce imprint. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Litografia su fondo seppia in bella coloritura coeva all'acquerello. Alcune macchie nel margine inferiore, che non compromettono il buono stato di conservazione.

Monckhoven, D. [Désiré Carolus Emanuel] v. [van]
Paris: Georges Masson, Libraire-Éditeur, 1876. First edition. 8vo., 104 pp., illustrated; bound with: PHOTOGRAPHIE AU CHARBON. PROCÉDÉS EXPLOITÉS ET PERFECTIONNÉS PAR AD. BRAUN & CIE., 12mo., ix, 12 pp., figures in text. Quarter morocco and marbled boards, gilt decorations and title on spine within raised bands. The instruction booklet is in the original wrappers and bears holographic notes in pencil. A fine and bright copy. Monckhoven's sustaining interest was toward the improvement of the carbon process, including establishing a manufactory for carbon tissue and a gelatin factory. This manual is straightforward and among the best on this process. The bound-in, abbreviated manual by Ad. Braun & Cie, is essentially a catalogue of materials for sale. Désiré Charles Emanuel van Monckhoven (1834-1882) was a Belgian chemist and photographer; he invented an enlarger, a dry collodion process, and made improvements to the carbon print process. He was a major contributor to the literature of photography. A scarce work, with WorldCat locating only thirteen copies worldwide.

Cramer, Carl Eduard, Botaniker (1831-1901)
Fluntern bei Zürich, 11. VI, 1876. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.

A total of 138 species of the group are recognized, of which all but one are figured on excellent, hand-colored plates" (Zimmer, Ayer, p. 588). This work was limited to 250 copies only. In the preface, Shelley acknowledges the importance of Keuleman's contribution of the fine color plates: "The illustrations which form such an important portion of my Monograph, have all been executed by Mr. Keulemans, whose name is sufficient guarantee for the accuracy of the details and for high artistic skill. The latter is rendered perhaps more striking from his being acquainted with this family of birds in their native haunts; and his notes upon the sun-birds inhabiting Prince's Island have been incorporated in my work." The sunbirds are small, slender passerines from the Old World, usually with downward-curved bills. Many are brightly colored, often with iridescent feathers … [Click Below for Full Description]

Magny, Olivier de. One of four copies printed on vellum
Lyons, N. Scheuring, 1876. 8vo. xxxii + 440p. Roman and italic type. Text printed within red line border (including half title and first sectional title), general title in red & black within ornamental woodcut border, 4 sectional titles printed in red within individual decorative woodcut borders, last sectional title in red & black within architectural woodcut border; initials. 4 blank vellum leaves bound in at beginning and end of volume. Jansenist dark blue morocco, title gilt-stamped on spine, inner gilt dentelles, edges gilt (by Chambolle-Duru); lightly rubbed. A French literary classic sumptuously printed on vellum containing the Odes of Olivier de Magny (c.1529-c.1560), a gifted lyrical poet from Cahors who was a follower of Ronsard and a friend of Joachim du Bellay. In his introduction to this superbly produced festive Lyon edition, Prosper Blanchemain (1806-79) explains the esteem in which Magny is held, partly due to the fact that he remained in the city most of his short life. The Odes, first published in Paris by André Wechel in 1559, are individually dedicated to persons of genius or high rank. The ornamentation of this volume is based on that of the original Paris edition. From the collection of Marcel Schlimovich with his bookplate inside front cover, and library stamp in blank corners of half title and verso of index leaf. Vicaire V-451. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Phil. Farley
Criminals Of America or, The Tales Of The Lives Of Thieves. Enabling Every One To Be His Own Detective. With Portraits, Making A Complete Rogues' Gallery, by Phil. Farley, Detective. Published by the author in 1876. This is a first edition hardcover book measuring about 9" x 6" with 638 pages. The date on the copyright page is 1875 and the date on the title page is 1876. The title page also says Author's Edition, which means that Philip Farley published the book himself. Because this book is extremely difficult to find, other than modern copies printed after the copyright expired, this is most likely the first and only original edition of the book. Philip Farley was a 19th Century New York City Police Department detective. The overall condition of the book is GOOD. The cover has some wear and it has an attractive gilt and black embossed design. The binding is in good shape though the bottom 2" of the endpaper hinge is cracked. The pages are in good shape with very light intermittent foxing and there is a dampness stain on the top 1/4" of most pages. There are 46 chapters about the various criminals of the time and there are about the same number of full-page B&W photos of the criminals. Please take a look at the pictures. Thanks for looking! We ship all orders within 1 business day of payment. This will be sent by secure registered mail. [Attributes: First Edition]

Pottsville, PA: 1876: The Daily Miners' Journal. Condition: Minor edgewear; two small closed punctures to paper in upper portion (no loss); two brief repaired tears to margins; Very Good. An unfolded example. Large broasheet supplement, 26-5/8" x 19-1/2" (ca 67.5cm x 50cm); on newsprint, printed both sides. Text on recto in eight columns, below printed headline; verso is a full sheet of advertisements. Verbatim trial transcript covering two days of testimony and cross-examination in the murder trial of Thomas Munley, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (aka "Molly Maguires") who would eventually be convicted for the murder of Welsh mine foreman Thomas Sanger. Among the witnesses quoted in the present transcript are Munley's father (who is interviewed at length); fellow miners of both Welsh and Irish extraction including Patrick Brennan, Thomas Williams, Edward Pierce, Luke Richardson; and other residents of the various mining towns in the Shenandoah coal district. A portion of the testimony deals directly with the operations of PInkerton spy James McParlan, who had infiltrated Mollies under the alias "James McKenna." Text concludes at lower right, with catch line: "Concluded in regular edition." Verso contains several dozen ads, including one for a pamphlet version of the trial, issued under the sensational title Among the Assassins! The Molly Maguires and Their Victims (Pottsville: 1876). Munley was hanged, along with nine other Mollies, on "Black Thursday," June 21, 1877; irregularities in his (and others') prosecution remain controversial to the present day. Milnes, Richard Monckton (Lord Houghton)
London: John Murray. Published 1876, 2 volumes, full pebbled midnight blue morocco gilt, with bookplates of Constance Battersea, and note addressed to Cyril Flower, First Baron Battersea, tipped to flyleaf. About fine with just a touch of dullness to spine. 319 / 323 pp., frontispiece in first volume. The recipient, Lord Battersea (Cyril Flower) was a patron of the arts, friendly with the Pre-Raphaelites, and probably gay (he had strong affections for men, and his wife, Constance, alludes to 'misplaced friendships' when discussing him in her memoirs; he also featured in a gay scandal in 1902). Milnes, like Battersea, was a member of Parliament, not a bad poet (Matthew Arnold had kind words for him), and his unsurpassed collection of erotic literature is the foundation of that collection at the British Library. Like Battersea, he was a patron of the arts and an avid supporter of the poets Tennyson, Swinburne and the author Coventry Patmore. Near Fine.
