MEACHAM Hon. A. B.
1876. First edition. 14 plates. 8vo. Original brown publishers cloth with gilt title to upper board and blind ornamental border, light shelfwear, corners rubbed, one with board showing at edge, internally clean with old bookseller's label to front pastedown, very good. 168pp. Hartford, American Publishing Company, Toby/Wi-ne-ma/Nanuokdomah Riddle (1848-1920) was a native American woman of the Modoc Tribe who acted as an interpreter and negotiator for the American army during the Modoc War. She saved the life of Alfred B. Meacham, an event which compelled him to write this biographical sketch of her, that also serves as a history of that war and her tribes people. Alfred B. Meacham (1826-82) served as the Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Oregon between 1869 and 1872, and in this time became acquainted with the Modoc tribe. Originally native to the lands surrounding Tule Lake in California, the American government's relocation programme was pushing the Modoc north into rival Klamath tribe land on the Oregon border. This resulted in a resistant faction of Modoc tribespersons headed by Kintapuash/Captain Jack (cousin of Wi-ne-ma) leaving the reservation they had been forced to migrate to and returning to their ancestral home. The American army's attempts to re-relocate these indigenous protestors resulted in the Madoc War, wherein the rebels sought refuge in the naturally fortified lava beds. In the proceeding attempts to negotiate with Kintapuash's warriors, Meacham assumed the role of Chairman of the Peace Commission, and enlisted Wi-Ne-Ma's assistance as a translator and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eichrodt, Ludwig, Ps. Rudolf Rodt, Schriftsteller (1827-1892).
Lahr, 10. XII. 1876. 2 SS. Gr.-4to. [Click Below for Full Description]

Monckhoven, D. [Désiré Carolus Emanuel] v. [van]
Paris: Georges Masson, Libraire-Éditeur, 1876. First edition. 8vo., 104 pp., illustrated; bound with: PHOTOGRAPHIE AU CHARBON. PROCÉDÉS EXPLOITÉS ET PERFECTIONNÉS PAR AD. BRAUN & CIE., 12mo., ix, 12 pp., figures in text. Quarter morocco and marbled boards, gilt decorations and title on spine within raised bands. The instruction booklet is in the original wrappers and bears holographic notes in pencil. A fine and bright copy. Monckhoven's sustaining interest was toward the improvement of the carbon process, including establishing a manufactory for carbon tissue and a gelatin factory. This manual is straightforward and among the best on this process. The bound-in, abbreviated manual by Ad. Braun & Cie, is essentially a catalogue of materials for sale. Désiré Charles Emanuel van Monckhoven (1834-1882) was a Belgian chemist and photographer; he invented an enlarger, a dry collodion process, and made improvements to the carbon print process. He was a major contributor to the literature of photography. A scarce work, with WorldCat locating only thirteen copies worldwide.

Fluntern bei Zürich, 11. VI, 1876. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.

London: Published by the author, 1876-1880. First edition. pp. i-cviii, 1-393; 121 hand-colored lithographs by Keulemans, each heightened with gum Arabic. Contemporary one-half Victorian-red morocco over scarlet red cloth boards, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in two compartments and with elaborate gilt floral decorations in the other four compartments, the title and author are lettered in gilt on the front board, top page edge in gilt, contemporary red marbled endpapers, lg 4to (13 x 10.25 inches; 33 x 25.5 cm). A total of 138 species of the group are recognized, of which all but one are figured on excellent, hand-colored plates" (Zimmer, Ayer, p. 588). This work was limited to 250 copies only. In the preface, Shelley acknowledges the importance of Keuleman's contribution of the fine color plates: "The illustrations which form such an important portion of my Monograph, have all been executed by Mr. Keulemans, whose name is sufficient guarantee for the accuracy of the details and for high artistic skill. The latter is rendered perhaps more striking from his being acquainted with this family of birds in their native haunts; and his notes upon the sun-birds inhabiting Prince's Island have been incorporated in my work." The sunbirds are small, slender passerines from the Old World, usually with downward-curved bills. Many are brightly colored, often with iridescent feathers … [Click Below for Full Description]
