Sammter, Rabbiner Dr. A.
Julius Benzian, Berlin, 1876. Elephant folio. 174pp. 3/4 blue leather over marbled boards. Gilt lettering to spine. Raised bands. Marbled endpapers. Excellent compilation and translation of one of the core Jewish texts, the Babylonian Talmud, tractate "Baba Mezia". In a very unusual manner, the original Talmudic text in the center of each page is in the original Hebrew, while the commentary surrounding the text on all sides is in German. As stated by OCLC, this edition was meant as the first part of a series covering the whole Talmud. However, it wasn't continued and this volume remains the only one ever published. Minor age wear to binding. Browning throughout. Otherwise clean and tight. Very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Verne, Jules
Diary of J. R. Kazallon, Passenger. Translated from the French by Ellen Frewer. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1876. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, beveled. First American Illustrated Edition, actually printed in London. In mid-1875 Osgood published the first edition in English, unillustrated, as a little volume in their "Saunterer's Series." In November 1875, Sampson Low published the first illustrated edition in London. Then in January 1876, Osgood issued some of the British sheets in their own binding, constituting the first American illustrated edition -- as here. In March 1876 -- just two months later -- Osgood's financial situation forced him to sell at auction the plates and unsold copies of the five Verne titles he had published; these were bought by one Albert Mason, who in turn sold them to Porter & Coates of Philadelphia -- who would then proceed to use the plates to publish editions of their own. (Porter & Coates also issued some copies with the Osgood 1876 title page, but with "Porter & Coates" at the foot of the spine.) As with the British edition, the volume also includes the early Verne tale "Martin Paz," though it is not mentioned on the binding nor on the title page.~This copy is in green cloth, and the gilt vignette on the front cover is centered (no known priority). It is a bright, near-fine copy (fine except for minor rubbing at the extremities). Apparently because of Osgood's then-pending doom, this is today a scarce book. Taves & Michaluk V014; Myers 47. Rowan, John J.
London: Edward Stanford, 1876. First edition thus (viii, 440, adverts) with coloured fold-out map of the northeast of NA, from the Sault to Nova Scotia and from Cape May to the subarctic, showing growing regions and where to hunt, trap, and fish, and for what. 8vo, in decorative green publisher’s cloth, gilt titles to spine. Under the nom de plume ‘Cariboo’, Rowan wrote a column for the periodical Field featuring ‘useful hints for emigrants and sportsmen’. These columns are gathered here, together with ‘fresh matter’. Rowan wrote, as he said, for ‘people of small fortune’ who if they remained in Britain would find only a pinched and impecunious life and a ‘shabby gentility’, but who if they emigrated to Canada might manage to live in a fashion more in keeping with their pretensions. Rowan was no eager promoter nor a wide-eyed fantasist and wrote from personal experience, whether about raising cattle or fishing salmon. He knew how to stay alive in the bush and how to tie a fly, as his directions for each suggest. Rowan is often portrayed as a sports writer, and he certainly knew his way around fly fishing and goose shooting, but this book is as much about how to get along and how to manage in this raw, new country and is all the more interesting for that. Minor loss at top edge of spine (.5 cm), bottom edge lightly abraded, a worn corner. A clean, tight, bright copy. Very nice indeed. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PHOTOGRAPH - JIM YOUNGER]
Taken in September, 1876 in Madelia, Mankato, or Northfield, Minnesota. This, the first photograph of Jim Younger after his capture, along with his brothers Cole and Bob, outside of Madelia, Minnesota, after their infamous robbery of the First National Bank in Northfield, Minnesota. See the image of Jim Younger shown between pages 40 & 41 of the classic account of the robbery, Robber and Hero, The Story of The Raid on The First National Bank of Northfield, Minnesota by the James-Younger Band of Robbers, in 1876 by George Huntington. An original carte-de-visite image, trimmed by a previous owner to 2" wide x 2.5" high, then protected in a rather ornate 19th century case, typically used with daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, or tintypes. Case in very good condition, with original cloth, hinge intact and original clasp present. Image has a very small card 1.25"W x .5"H, describing image, affixed to the image under Jim's chin, across his upper chest, by a previous owner, many years ago. Otherwise, a clean, very good image. James Younger was born in Lee's Summit or Harrisonville, Missouri on January 15, 1848. Jim rode, with Cole and the James Brothers, with Quantrill's Guerillas. Jim was captured near Smiley, Kentucky and imprisoned until the end of the war. After the war, Jim joined Cole and the James Brothers in several bank robberies. In addition, Jim and brother John confronted 2 Pinkerton men and a Deputy Sheriff in Monegaw Springs, Missouri on March 16, 1874. The resultant shoot-out ended with John Younger and 2 of the 3 lawmen dead. Jim's demise began with the gang's decision t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quite a nice copy with the folding plate in nice condition. NOW SCARCE AND A HANDSOME FIRST EDITION. An account of recent archaeological investigations and discoveries in Italy, with a long section on its ancient and modern languages. Burton had hands-on experience digging for Etruscan artifacts near Bologna on the land of Count Gozzadini. He was also friendly with several professors from the University of Bologna-- Calori, Fabretti, and Capellini, and included their findings in this work. Essentially a guidebook for the region, it covers the new and old sections of the city, a comprehensive look at the rich archaeological collections in its museums, a history of Estruscan excavations from the area, and an analysis of the ancient language. Burton found the Bologna region a vast repository of Estruscan antiquities. The book contains a significant number of important illustrations and plans, including examples of the written language. Burton attempted to decipher the mystery of its symbols, but failed to do so. Burton's "Etruscan Bologna" is a serious, scholarly archaeological survey without his usual cyni … [Click Below for Full Description]

TRUMBULL, After John (1756-1843, artist). - Waterman Lilly ORMSBY (1809-1883, engraver)
[New York?: no date, but c.1876]. Original steel printing plate, engraved by Waterman Lilly Ormsby. Plate maker's mark 'J. Garside / Newark N.J.' stamped on verso. Plate size 24 x 32 5/8 inches. The original plate from which was printed one of the most admired engraved versions of 'the most important visual record of the heroic period of American history' ('Concise Dictionary of American Biography' p.1082). The painting from which this image is taken was the result of eight years work by John Trumbull: this is not surprising when one learns that, of the 48 portraits that it finally included, a remarkable thirty six were executed from life. The painting, now in the Yale University Art Gallery, is undoubtedly Turnbull's masterpiece. ' Without a flourish, without heroic gesture, with the associations of power and elegance transformed into sobriety and determination, Trumbull's painting is not grand, but it achieves grandeur. There is not another like it in the world. The very immobility of the figures and the airlessness of the room suggest the frozen instant in which had been born the new state, to be led not by the caprice or ambitions of a monarch, but by the sweet dictates of republican reason.' (Irma Jaffé John Trumbull, p.117). 'As a national image, The Declaration of Independence has penetrated the American consciousness through reproductions in history books, popular magazines, calendars, and every kind of image-making medium.' ( Irma Jaffé John Trumbull, p.117). In the hierachy of the reproductions of this image, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

During Hall's last North Polar expedition, the Polaris reached 82 degrees 11 north and 61 degrees west, the farthest northerly point then reached by a vessel. Hall died of a stroke on November, 1871. The expedition continued under George Tyson. This includes an account of the survivors fate after the ship and crew met with disaster and their ice floe journey from Smith Sound to the Labrador coast. See Blake, Arctic Experiences "The geographic results of the expedition were extensive and important. Kennedy channel disclosed the way to the North Pole. Greenland and Grinnell Land were extended about three degrees of latitude northward. With similar limited resources no man has surpassed Charles Francis Hall in arctic explorations." (Dictionary of American Biography VIII, pp 120-121.) Condition: New spine, corners bumped, shelf wear, spine ends and corners rubbed, covers faded. Over all about very good. . First Edition.
