TAYLOR, Bayard (editor)
New York: D. Appleton & Co, [n.d. but circa 1876-1879]. 3 volumes bound from the original 60 parts, large quarto. (12 7/8 x 10 inches). Steel- engraved additional titles and plates, numerous wood-engraved illustrations. Red morocco gilt by the Rowfant Bindery of Cleveland, Ohio, the covers panelled in gilt with arabesque cornerpieces incorporating stylized anthemion tools, the spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third compartments, the others with repeat tooling in gilt, the place and date of publication tooled in gilt at the foot of each spine, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, original brown paper wrappers from the original parts bound at the back of each volume, top edge gilt (light discolouration to small sections of the covers of vols.II and III). A spectacularly-bound copy of this attractive best-seller. The binding of this exceptional copy of this important steel- and wood-engraved record of 'Picturesque Europe' is one of 1,051 books bound by the bindery during its relatively short tenure in Cleveland, Ohio, between 1909 and 1914. The bindery was the second incarnation of the Club Bindery, set up in New York, chiefly to tend to the binding needs of the Grolier Club Members. In much the same way, the Rowfant Bindery apparently only did work for members of the Rowfant Club. This work, published as a companion to the earlier Picturesque America, was published in both England and America. The American issue appeared in 60 parts, priced at 50 cents per part, and according to the publishers the whole formed "the most complete an … [Click Below for Full Description]

[CLEMENS, Samuel Langhorne] TWAIN, Mark
Hartford, Conn.: The American Publishing Company,, 1876. Square octavo. Original blue vertically-ribbed cloth decoratively stamped in black and gilt and lettered in gilt and blind on front cover and spine, back cover decoratively stamped in black with publisher's device stamped in black in the centre, peach endpapers. Blue morocco slipcase and chemise, lettered gilt. Wood-engraved frontispiece and numerous wood-engraved text illustrations by True Williams and others. Very slight rubbing and/or fraying to corners and spine extremities, inner hinges with some short superficial cracking, still an excellent copy, the cloth bright and fresh. First American edition, first printing, printed on wove paper, with the half-title and frontispiece printed on separate leaves (verso of half-title and recto of frontispiece blank). The American edition was published around the beginning of December 1876, preceded by the London edition published in June the same year. Mark Twain had moved to Hartford to work with the publisher Elisha Bliss, Jr. of the American Publishing Company. At the time, Hartford was a publishing centre with twelve publishers, and the town had the highest per-capita income of any city in the United States. Tom Sawyer proved such a success that Twain was able to hire Tiffany to supervise the redecoration of his Hartford house. It also inspired him, somewhat less successfully, to found his own publishing house, Charles L. Webster and Company, which had success with its first two publications, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bezold, Wilhelm von
L. Prang, Boston, 1876. Octavo. xxxiii, 274pp., + thirteen plates. American edition, revised and enlarged by the author. With an introduction by Edward C. Pickering, a professor of Physics at MIT. Illustrated throughout with many woodcuts, as well as the thirteen chromolithographed plates. The first plate depicts the spectra of sunlight and color pigments, and the second plate shows Bezold's versions of color wheels. Other plates illustrate the illusion of how colors appear to change when juxtaposed against other colors. Six of the plates have text printed in black on paper of various colors, with white tissue guards. When overlaid with the tissue, the black lettering appears to take on tinges of color. Bezold was a physicist and meteorologist working at the Royal Polytechnic School in Munich, and his approach to color theory was intended to be practical for artists and those working in applied arts. Many of his examples are drawn from the decorative arts throughout history, especially from textiles and ornamental mosaics. According to "A Color Bibliography" by Robert L. Herbert, published in the Yale University Library Gazette, "Bezold represents the generation beyond Maxwell and Helmholz, when the distinction between color-light and color-pigment was at last clearly understood in the scientific world." Bound in original light brown cloth, gilt-titled to spine. First signature slightly loose, some wear to spine ends, else fine. (Yale University Library Gazette 49, No. 1, July). Washington: Government Printing Office, 1876. 8vo., (9 x 5 6/8 inches). 8 fine folding lithographed maps. Original brown cloth, gilt (backstrip worn with loss). Provenance: Presentation copy from Lieut. George M. Wheeler, with his compliments slip tipped-in to the inside front wrapper; probably to Lieut. Charles William Whipple (1846-1916), son of the explorer Amiel Weeks Whipple (1818 - 1863), his sale his sale Doyle New York, 23rd April 2012, lot 115. First edition. Following the famous 1871 survey of California, Nevada, and Arizona, the first survey after the Civil War in the tradition of the former Corps of Topographical Engineers, Wheeler developed a "comprehensive plan to map west of the 100th meridian, "the main object of this exploration to obtain correct topographical knowledge of the country traversed." Officially designated the U.S. Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, the "Wheeler Survey" became one of four great federal surveys after the Civil War. While Clarence King was just completing his 1867-1872 fieldwork for the chief of engineers, Interior Department surveys under Ferdinand V. Hayden and Powell remained active. The other surveys had no military presence, but army officers commanded Wheeler's parties and performed much of the astronomy required for detailed surveying. Civilian topographers performed most mapping for Wheeler, and civilian scientists did pioneering studies in geology, botany, paleontology, and archaeology. Topographic emphasis also differentiated Wheeler from the other surveys' concentration on geology" (Peter L. Guth for ANB). … [Click Below for Full Description]

Near contemporary blue half morocco by Root & Son, spines gilt in compartments, blue cloth sides, marbled endpapers, ruling to boards and top edges gilt. The Hand of Ethelberta was originally published as a serial in the Cornhill Magazine from July 1875 to May 1876, and in the New York Times between 20 June 1875 and 9 April 1876. Hardy began writing Ethelberta after Leslie Stephen, the editor of Cornhill, asked for another story following the success of Far from the Maddening Crowd, which Cornhill had published as a serial between January and December 1874. Each instalment of the serial was accompanied by an illustration and a vignette initial by George Du Maurier, with the illustrations being used again when the story was published in book form.

Twain, Mark (Clemens)
American Publishing Company, 1876. First Edition. A beautiful copy. This attractive second issue book has an important point of 1875 printed on the copyright page, and 1876 on the title page. Later editions have a later year such as 1879. The binding is exceptionally nice, with minor wear to the boards. The pages are clean with NO writing, marks or bookplates in the book. A wonderful copy housed in a custom clamshell slipcase for preservation. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

HAZELTINE, Martin Mason [photographer]
[Yosemite]: Hazeltine, [ca. 1876]. Albumen photograph. 18 x 22 cm. (7 x 8 inches), on original printed card-stock mount, in vintage wooden frame under glass. Minor fading to image but a beautiful piece. Rare Hazeltine photograph of the rock formation high above the floor of Yosemite Valley. M.M. Hazeltine and his brother George Irving Hazeltine arrived in California in 1853, setting up a daguerreotype studio in San Francisco before going their independent ways. In the mid-1860s Martin moved to Mendocino to practice photography, much of which would be published by J.P. Soule and Lawrence & Houseworth. In the late 1860s Martin began to photograph the Yosemite Valley and Big Tree regions of the Sierra Nevada. The only other known copy of this photograph is currently housed at the Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley. Clouds Rest is an arete, a thin, almost knife-like, ridge of rock formed when glaciers eroded away solid rock to form Tenaya Canyon and Little Yosemite Valley. The northwest face, mostly solid granite, raises 5,000 feet (1,520 m) above Tenaya Creek. Lafayette H. Bunnell, a medical doctor with the Mariposa Battalion, notes that his party named the summit Clouds Rest because they returned to camp to avoid a snow storm after seeing "the clouds rapidly settling down to rest upon that mountain." The Tomb, an outcrop really, is still there atop the mountain.
