NEW SECTIONAL MAP OF THE STATE OF MISSOURI ENGRAVED FROM OFFICIAL DRAUGHTS OF EACH COUNTY

Chicago: George F. Cram, 1876. Colored engraved folding map, 29 1/2 x 39 inches. Folding into original 16mo. cloth covers, stamped in gilt and blind. A bit of light staining in the upper portion. A handsome copy, vibrantly colored. A very attractive Missouri pocket map, beautifully printed and colored by county. Railroad lines are a special feature of the map, and their profusion throughout the state is highlighted. The map is copyrighted 1872 but dated 1876 in the cartouche. Cram began issuing this Missouri pocket map in 1869 and it was quite popular, appearing in updated editions in 1870, 1871, and 1873. County-by-county census results are printed on the front pastedown of the cover, showing Missouri's total population at more than 1.7 million. This edition is not in Rumsey or in Karrow, and Phillips' MAPS lists only the 1873 edition. There are only two copies of this 1876 edition listed in OCLC, at Cornell and the Kansas State Historical Society. OCLC 63915684.

The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits

MacMillan and Co., Limited, London - 1876, 1st edition, 1st printing. () Very good. xi, 83 [1]. 12mo. Original buff pictorial cloth with black illustrations and lettering stamped to both boards and spine. Some minor defects to the hinges have been professionally restored. Corners a bit bumped. Black endpapers. All edges gilt. A small (5" X 3"), two page pamphlet by Lewis Carroll, entitled "An Easter Greeting to Every Child Who Loves 'Alice'" from 1876 has been tipped in to the backside of the frontis. Black and white illustrations by Henry Holiday--9 plates in total, including the frontispiece, with original tissue guards. First issue error of "baker" on page 83. Internally clean and an overall near fine copy. A wonderfully well preserved copy of this bizarre book, made especially scarce by the pamphlet tipped in. This book is a fantastical poem involving a strange crew of tradesmen and a beaver as they set off on a journey to find "the snark". The illustrations by Holiday, as well as the highly decorative binding, greatly compliment this truly strange and lovely little book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

In a ministerial career stretching almost thirty years years, he was most notably twice Secretary for Scotland under William Ewart Gladstone and the Earl of Rosebery.         The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

London: Chatto & Windus, 1876. First edition. Fine. First edition, preceding the American edition by six months. A Fine copy in a Cosway-style binding (by Bayntun-Riviere) with a miniature painted by Stanley Hardy. All edges gilt, silk-moire end-papers, original cloth covers and spine bound into the rear. Minor wear to three of the bands now expertly and invisibly repaired. Otherwise without fault. Housed in a cloth slipcase. One of the classic American novels, Twain's bildungsroman follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer - and his friend Huck Finn -- in St. Petersburg, Missouri told with Twain's characteristic and unmatchable wit and humor. It would become his best-selling book and its sequel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," is arguably the greatest American novel of all time. "Mr. Samuel Clemens has taken the boy of the Southwest for the hero of his new book… and has presented him with a fidelity to circumstance which loses no charm by being realistic in the highest degree, and which gives incomparably the best picture of life in that region as yet known to fiction." (Contemporary Atlantic Monthly Review). Fine.

Photograph album. Egypt and Switzerland. Egypt and Switzerland., [1880s-1890s].

1876. 4to (295 x 235 mm). 50 photographs of Egypt (albumen prints and cyanotypes), and approximately 40 albumen prints of Switzerland. Impressively presented series of original photographs taken at various important sites and cities in Egypt, including Giza, Thebes, Karnak, Luxor, Abydos, Esna etc. The photographs show archaeological sites like the temple of Seti I at Abydos, the precinct of Ahmen-Rah near Luxor, the avenue of Sphinxes at Karnak, the Ramesseum and the Colossi at Thebes, the temple of Khnum at Esna, the Sphinx and pyramids of Giza and many more. Other photographs show the local population, doing a wide variety of activities, such as catching crocodiles on the nile, a Luxor barber shaving the head of a sailor, or a Bedouin camp in the Libyan Desert. - The Istanbul-based Sebah studio catered to the Western European interest in the exotic "Orient" and the growing numbers of tourists visiting the Muslim world who wished to take home images of the city, ancient ruins in the surrounding area, portraits, and local people in traditional costumes. "Sebah rose to prominence because of his well-organized compositions, careful lighting, effective posing, attractive models, great attention to detail, and for the excellent print quality" (Gary Saretzky, Photo history). Jean Sebah (1876-1947) took over the studio from his father Pascal after his death and signed his productions "J. P. Sebah" on the negative, putting his initial in front of his father's. - Some spotting and fading.

Autograph letter signed. Bayreuth, 5. III. 1876.

1876. Large 8vo. 4 pp. on double leaf. To an unnamed member of the Wagner Society of Cologne, on a scheduled concert at the Gürzenich concert hall and his participation in it: "[...] I am quite satisfied with its program, but I prefer to do the prelude to Lohengrin instead of the Walkürenritt ["Ride of the Valkyries"] which I really dislike to play, not at least because of the enormously huge orchestra which is necessary [...]". Moreover, Wagner writes on some concerts at Leipzig, Dresden, Breslau, Prag, Graz, and Pest, he had refused to give, and a concert at London, which was organized by the British pianist and head of the Wagner Society of London, Edward Dannreuther (1844-1905). - WBV 6442.

Autograph letter signed ("Prof. C. Cramer"), and with small drawing. Fluntern bei Zürich, 11. VI. 1876.

1876. Large 8vo. 3 pp. on double leaf. To the British botanist and publisher Alfred William Bennett (1833-1902), telling him that he has heard through "L. Hegnauer, who had the good fortune to stay some time with you [...] that you are kindly going to identify for me some unusual tropical woods, that I have been researching anatomically [...]", apologising for not sending them sooner, "now that at last I have a little more free time, I would first of all say how [...] grateful I am for your Memoirs. The woods will reach you soon, but I would like to draw your special attention here to Nos. 1 and 2, then Nos. 3 and 4, because most depends on the identification of these. All the specimens are transverse sections [...] The portions of No. 1 reveal a fairly tall trunk with a weakly spiralling and twisting longitudinal edge. No. 2 is, as its dark colour shows, steeped in Paraffin. Its trunk is like that of No. 3 (Tripteris?), with only weak grooves on the outside. Nos. 5 and 6 should rightly be distinguished. I wonder if 3 and 7 should also? All the specimens are for you to keep [...]", wondering if Bennett can obtain for him "a piece of the stem of the Serjania with totally separate bodies of wood from 1 to 3 cm. long and about 1 cm. thick (I already possess a Serjania 2-3 mm thick)", with a sketch of the cross-section showing a cluster of stems within the main stem, "Equally welcome too would be specimens, not too thin, of other unusual stems, namely of Bignoniaceae, Dilleniaceae, Ampelidaceae (Cissus) Phytolaccaceae, Nyctaginaceae, Leguminosae (Rhynchosiascandens Bauhinia, Caulotretus)", sending in exchange a SpatolobuslittoralisHaukarl, promising his "paper on Podisomafuscum and Roesteliacancellata" and praying that "you will not take offence at my heavy demands, or be in a hurry to answer my questions, if anything is thereby likely to cause you trouble [...] My niece will have told you, that I am well able to read English, but, unfortunately, I write it badly". - Cramer succeeded Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli, (1817-1891), whose life he wrote (1896). With Nägeli he researched the physiology of plants, including their irritability and movement. He also worked on the fossil Arctic flora, and on bacteria during the Zürich typhus epidemic of 1884. Cramer founded the Institute of Botanic Physiology at the Polytechnikum, and was Director of the Zürich Botanic Garden 1882-1893. - Bennett was Lecturer in Botany at Bedford College, London, and at St. Thomas' Hospital. He translated and edited Julius Sachs' "Lehrbuch der Botanik", 1875, and collaborated in "Handbook of Cryptogamic Botany", 1889. - Remains of mounting on blank fourth side.

        Autograph letter signed ("F. Engels"). London, 28. X. 1876.

1876. 4 pp. on bifolium. A highly remarkable and extensive letter of political content to the English stockbroker and author Thomas Allsop (1795-1880), particularly on the international and the political situation in Eastern Europe whose key issue lies in the domestic policy of Russia: the impending revolution in his own country is threatening to drag Tsar Alexander II. into war with Turkey. "My dear friend. A visit from a friend from Liverpool who came to town for a few days, unfortunately prevented me from replying earlier to your letter. We shall all be glad to see you here in London and do everything in our power to reconcile you with the world & with life. As you say, this Eastern affair is exceedingly complicated, but as Russia is the only moving & acting power in it, so are her internal necessities the only thread that can lead through all these complications & render them intelligible. Russia has the choice between a revolution & a war of conquest; there is no third outlet open to her; and as Alexander certainly will not have a revolution, war he must make. Besides, there is only one war which might avert revolution: a war with Turkey. What Mayence & the boundary of the Rhine was to Louis Napoleon, that is Constantinople & the Nosporus to Alexander: the only conquests capable of rousing national chauvinism to an extent sufficient to overcome all other shapes of public feeling, & to crush any opposition by new popularity. And, as Louis Napoleon would have been satisfied with a small slice to begin with, & the constitution of the remainder of the coveted territory in an independent state, to be swallowed hereafter, so would it perfectly suffice to Russia to reannex to small strip only which she lost in 1856, if at the same time the rest of Turkey in Europe were transformed into Christial vassal states of the Porte, in reality outposts of Russia [...] As to Austria, the inherent stupidity of that government makes its policy incalculable [...] As to Poland, never fear. She is less Russianized now than a hundred years ago [...] The Poles in Prussia are equally indestructible; Germanization proceeds very slowly except in those portions which were settled & inhabited before 1772. In Austria the Poles are not only not interfered with, but so placed that they can perfectly take care of themselves & make of Galicia the headquarters of Polish agitation. What the Russian government think of Poland was plainly shown in the Crimean war: they rather sacrificed all their armies in the long marches to the Crimea than to allow the war to take place near the Polish frontier. But I must conclude. Very faithfully yours, F. Engels." - On 6 December 1876, the first social revolutionary demonstration should arise in St. Petersburg. Shortly after Russia had signed a secret agreement with the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Romania, it declared war on Turkey on 24 June 1877. - Small traces of folding, but overall in mint condition. Extremely rare.
