        LETTRE AUTOGRAPHE SIGNEE

      - JACOB Max (Quimper 1876 – camp de Drancy 1944), écrivain et peintre français Lettre autographe signée à l’éditeur Pierre Aelberts. Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire Loiret 10 juin 1926 ; 2 pages in-8°. Barnabae Itinerarium, or, Barnabee's Journal

London - Reeves and Turner, 1876 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smart, finely bound edition of Braithwaite's famous satire. Bound in half leather with gilt lettering and decoration. A New Edition Carefully Revised by W. Carew Hazlitt. This text is in English and Latin. With A Life of the Author, A Bibliographical Introduction to the Itinerary and a Catalogue of his Works. With Four Plates. This didactic and satirical text describes four journeys between Kendal (Brathwaite's home) and London. The route taken is different in each instance. It is a remarkable example of the trend for topographical writings in the 1630s, but in its rollicking style it also prefigures some of the picaresque novels of the eighteenth century. (DNB)Joseph Haslewood, 1769 - 1833, was an English bibliographer and antiquary. William Carew Hazlitt, 1834 - 1913, was an Englishbibliographer. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is slight wear to the extremities, including slight rubbing andfading, prominent to the spine. Internally the pageshave very slight browning, with light spots throughout. Overall the condition isnear fine..

A Memoir of Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford

sp; - London - MacMillan5vol.; 9.5 by 6; I: (xvi)680pp., II: 4934pp., III: (v)570pp., IV: 504pp., V: (vii)842pp., 1876 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Amagisterial biography of the pioneering thermodynamic physicist and inventor Benjamin Thompson, with a selection of his works. Thompson (1753-1814) was born in Massachussetts, then one of the Thirteen Colonies. Apprenticed to trade with a merchant (and excelling at his chosen career), he came into contact with the middle classes and sought to emulate their ways - including an interest in popular science. After several inconclusive experiments and a failed attempt to gain a scientificeducation under articles to a medical doctor, he had a stroke of luck in a marriage to a wealthy widow whose connections afforded him the privileges society had refused him on the basis of his hard work alone. By the time the American Revolution broke out, Thompson was comfortably a member of the elite (even holding an officer'scommission in the militia), and it followed easily that he served in the Loyalist forces and readily supplied General Gage with valuable information concerning the rebels. In conducting experiments with gunpowder, Thompson's workwith the military afforded him the option to conduct research into thermodynamics with hugely reduced constraints. By this token, he had established a name for himself as a man of science by the time he moved to Londn as the war drew to an end in the form of Loyalist and British defeat. Several years later, Thompson moved to Germany where a position as aide-de-camp to a Bavarian prince enabled him to move yet further up the rungs of scoiety. It was here that he conducted his most fruitful research; into the insulating properties of different substances, conductivity, and the nature of hear. When Thompson diedin 1814, he died a count of the Holy Roman empire and British knight; and his name and legacy live on in the form of a named crater on the Moon and a set of medals awarded by the Royal Society to this day - a thorough cirriculum vitae for aMassachussetts shopkeeper's apprentice. This lovely part-illustrated set bears an armorial vignette of the Royal Engineers Library to the front board of each volume, and is expressed to have been published with noticesby Rumford's daughter (who inherited his German title)and'in connection with an edition of Rumford's complete works by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Boston. 'Complete in five volumes. Condition: Externally, bound in old calf. A trifle rubbed and worn. Lovely royal purple cloth boards, bearing gilt vignette of the Royal Engineers Library. Ridged spines with gilt contrasting labels, volume numbers, and embellishments. Moderate wear and loss to all calf sections (extremities in particular) and some rubbing to boards. Internally, very firmbly bound. Hinge of vol. 2 starting. Very bright and clean with broad margins and clear text; notwithstanding scattered spots to preliminary pages as might be expected. Vol I. has engraved preliminary plate and eight further plates. Vol. IV has folding schematic of expermient. All frontispieces stamped in blue ink with Royal Engineers crest. Index page of vol. Vcoming loose at top. Overall: GOOD.

In Morphologisches Jahrbuch 1 (1876): 347-434, plus 4 plates (nos. X-XIII). Whole volume, 8vo. iv, 816pp. 27 plates (9 folding). 225 x 150 mm. Quarter morocco, marbled boards, circa 1876. Light rubbing. Occasional foxing, paper a bit toned, otherwise very good. From the library of embryologist / comparative anatomist Robert Wiedersheim (1848-1923; see G-M 183 and 343), with his signature on the front endpaper and occasional marginal marks probably by him. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 495. Hertwig's Habilitationsschrift paper, based on his study of fertilization in sea urchins, established the fact that fertilization consists of the union of the nuclei of a male and a female sex cell, and that only one spermatozoon is required to fertilize an egg. This latter finding had important implications for the study of heredity. Hertwig's paper marks an important conceptual advance, uniting the process of fertilization and the transfer of hereditary material with the nuclear theory of sexual reproduction. This copy is from the library of Robert Wiedersheim, best known for his role in establishing comparative anatomy as a discipline, and for his famous textbook on the subject (Vergleiche Anatomie der Wirbeltiere, 1883). Housed in green linen chemises and dark green morocco-backed linen slipcases. 2 portraits in Leaves of Grass, albumen photograph frontispiece portrait in Two Rivulets. The portrait of Whitman in Two Rivulets is signed and dated by the author, title page of Leaves of Grass also signed by the author. A wonderful memento, as Whitman was personally involved in the actual printing of this Centennial Edition. Leaves of Grass, one of the great milestones of American literature, was first published in 1855. "Leaves of Grass and Two Rivulets... formed a complex, multi-faceted centennial offering that provided trenchant commentary on the century-old country, mixing indictment and praise, offsetting despair at failures with hope for the future, and juxtaposing prose and poetry" (Folsom & Price, Re-Scripting Walt Whitman, p. 106).

Elizabeth Thompson, later Lady Butler, was perhaps the leading painter of this genre of the late nineteenth century. Her famous quartet of paintings exhibited between 1874 and 1877 (Calling the Roll after and Engagement in the Crimea - Her Majesty the Queen; Quatre Bras - National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Balaclava - City of Manchester Art Gallery; and The Return from Inkerman - Ferens Art Gallery, Kingston upon Hull) established her reputation but her subsequent works never quite achieved the fame of these earlier pictures, in spite of such dramatic scenes as Scotland for Ever! (Leeds City Art Gallery) and The Defence of Rorke's Drift (Her Majesty the Queen). She continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1920 but with few exceptions, all her pictures had military themes particularly soldiers in battle. While she never witnessed actual warfare, although she was in Egypt for some years in the 1880's with her husband, Lieut. Gen. Sir William Butler, many of her pictures were drawn accurately using models in some cases, or observing soldiers on maneuvers or practicing charges at Aldershot. For instance, when Queen Victoria commissioned the artist to depict the defense of Rorke's Drift, Elizabeth Butler went down to Gosport where the 24th Regiment was billeted upon its return from Natal, and made sketches from life. The soldiers even re-enacted the battle in their original uniforms worn throughout the campaign.
