Notes of a Voyage from New South Wales to the North Coast of Australia

Glasgow: privately printed, n.d. but, 1876. Octavo, photographic frontispiece, eight lithograph plates and four folding lithograph maps and another map in the text; headband a little frayed, very good overall in original green cloth, bookplate of Rodney Davidson. A very scarce book, the only public account of an important expedition to Arnhem Land in what is now the Northern Territory. With a photographic portrait frontispiece of Napier himself. In 1867 Francis Napier joined the South Australian Government expedition under Captain Francis Cadell to the north coast of the state (now the Northern Territory) searching for suitable sites for settlement. Cadell had a long and swashbuckling career in exploration and trading: he had earlier won the South Australian prize for successfully navigating the Murray in a steam-powered vessel, had been involved in the Maori Wars, and in the 1870s was a whaler and trader in Fiji and neighbouring islands. 'Early in 1867 he was appointed by the South Australian government to lead an expedition to the Northern Territory to choose a site for the capital and an area for agricultural settlement. He examined the Liverpool River, went up the Roper River in a small steamer and visited Port Darwin, Anson Bay and the Victoria River. He spent most of the year in thorough investigation, but the instructions on which he acted were misdirected.' (ADB) His own report, published in the South Australian Parliamentary Papers for 1867, was openly criticised at the time.As a result, Napier's "Notes" were the only public account of the expedition and are an important document of the early contact and charting of the region. It was compiled from Napier's journal by his family and privately printed in Glasgow following his death in 1875. The plates, drawn with lithographic crayon, were done by one of Napier's brother, and are signed "JMN"

Third American Chess congress Chicago, 1874

Hannibal, MO: Office of the american Chess Journal, 1876 title+[3 leaves]+[12]-103 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's green pebbled blind stamped ruled cloth with gilt lettering to cover. Signed by J W Rimington-Wilson. (Betts: 25-10, (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5201) First edition. The third United States Chess Congress was held in the city of Chicago, Illinois from July 7th to the 16th, 1874. Eight American chess masters and players participated in the "double rounds" master event by paying an entry fee of $20. The participants were previous US Congress winner George Henry Mackenzie, previous US Congress participants Frederic Elder, Henry Hosmer, Max Judd, Hiram Kennicott, and Frederick Perrin, as well as Frederick Bock and James Adams Congdon. The time control was fifteen moves every hour and for the first time in an organized US tournament draws were not required to be replayed. Elder and Kennicott both had to withdraw before their games could be completed, however the games played, their scores, and subsequent standings were included at the final. Games decided by forfeit have been omitted from this collection. As with many tournaments and events from the 19th century, no official organization of rounds or scheduling was in place. Mackenzie won his second consecutive American Chess Congress as well as the $225 grand prize by finishing clear first with +10 1/2, yet just half a point of second place Hosmer. Judd was a clear third with +7. Trailing the field were Bock (+5 1/2), Elder (+3 1/2), Perrin (+2), Congdon (+1 1/2) and Kennicott (0). This book is the rarest of the six american chess congress.James Wilson Rimington-Wilson (1822-1877) was one of the great collectors of books about chess, as well as books about other games and sports. Rimington-Wilson was born, lived, and died at Broomhead Hall, Yorkshire, England. He was a strong amateur chess player and records of some of his games survive, including a victory over Wilhelm Steinitz, the first official world champion of chess. Rimington-Wilson developed an extensive gaming library, which was maintained and perhaps added to by his son, Reginald Henry Rimington-Wilson (1852-1927). A number of documents survive describing the collection and its disposition. After the death of R. H., his son Captain H. E. Rimington-Wilson (1899-1971) ordered the sale of the library by auction at Sotheby's. The Quaritch firm that purchased the vast majority of the Rimington-Wilson lots at Sotheby's. They offered the books in two catalogs shortly after the sale. Condition:rimington-Wilson's signature to front paste down. Corners bumped, some occasional foxing else a very good to fine copy.

Benedetta Ernestina Maria, Prinzessin von Modena. Nach einem Gemälde von Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757), Staatl. Kunstsammlungen Dresden.

Autograph Letter, signed (ÒSamuel L. ClemensÓ), to Dr. John Brown, in Edinburgh, with postscript by Livy Clemens

Elmira, New York, 1876. 4 pp pen and ink on two 8vo sheets. Creased from prior folds, light browning at margins. Mounted and framed with photograph, displaying pp. 1 & 3 of letter. A warm and personal letter to the ClemensÕ close friend Dr. John Brown, imploring him to visit their summer idyll. ?'I wish you were here to spend the summer with us. We are perched on a hill-top that overlooks a little world of green valleys, shining rivers, sumptuous forests and billowy uplands veiled in the haze of distance. We have no neighbors. It is the quietest of all the quiet places, and we are hermits that eschew caves and live in the sun. Doctor, if youÕd only come!?" Clemens hands the letter off to his wife, who, in a short signed postscript, echoes her husbandÕs sentiments. Clemens began work on HUCKLEBERRY FINN, following the publication of TOM SAWYER, during the summer of 1876. Dr. Brown (1810-1882) was the author of the cherished dog story, RAB AND HIS FRIENDS, as well as several volumes of medical essays.

        PARIS [EN PHOTOGRAPHIE; ALBUM]

8217 - An album of 30 mounted albumen prints, most all with "Achille Quinet" stamped in red on the mount and the identification of the scene in pencil. Quinet was highly regarded in his day, and remains so. A contemporary critic dubbed Quinet's work "artistic studies", admiring how Quinet would select the simplest of subjects, choose his hour of light, and "portray with great finesse a sense of light even among the spot shadows" (Alphonse Davanne, Bulletin de la Societe Francaise de Photographie, 1876). Views of the major monuments of Paris, including the Louvre, the Place de la Concorde, the Arc du Triomphe, St. Cloud, Fountainbleau and an evocative Vue de Paris showing the rooftops of the city and the bridges across the Seine. Probably produced for the third Paris World's Fair, the Exposition Universelle of 1878 which celebrated the recovery of France after the Franco-Prussian War. Quinet's image are wholly depopulated, with an eerie but timeless stillness. Sadly, the 30 plates in this album almost all have significant foxing, as do the mounts. With the attractive bookplate of late 19th century architect Edward Francis Searles.
