        Charmosyna Josephinæ. "

Natural History: London. Taylor & Francis for Henry Sotheran Ltd. . Lithographed by Walter. 1875-1888. Original hand-coloured lithograph of Josephina Parrakeets, from John Gould's "Birds of New Guinea. " Volume 5, Plate 12. A pair of brightly coloured parrakeets upon a branch. Bright and generally clean; minor spotting to outer margins; very good. John Gould (1804- 1881) Ornithologist, first trained as a taxidermist, opening a business in London in 1824. In 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the Museum of the Zoological Society of London; there he oversaw the collection of birds from Himalaya which led to his first published work "A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains" [ 1830-32]. Throughout his life he eventually published 41 volumes with approximately 3000 plates. covering birds of Europe, Great Britain, Asia, Australia and Papua New Guinea. The works were published in livraisons, by pre-paid subscrption, each part cost three guineas. In the early works he was aided in the creation of the plates by his wife Elizabeth Gould, Edward Lear and others. Gould died in February 1881 having completed the first 12 parts of the present work " The Birds of New Guinea and the adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia. " As the title suggests he intended the work to supplement the "Birds of Australia" with the newly discovered species. After his death, Henry Sotherans purchased his entire stock and copyrights and in a notice to the Subsribers they stated their intention to complete the unfinished works [" Birds of Asia" and" Birds of New Guinea"] using all Gould's staff, artists and colourists under the supervision of William Hart, and with the text edited by Richard Bowdler Sharpe who was Senior Assistant in the Department of Zoology at the British Museum.

Bridgman's Map of the Suburbs of New York City Embracing the Territory Occupied by the Homes of New York Businessman

New York: [circa 1875]. Folding pocket map, full period hand-colouring. (Flattened, separations at folds repaired). With the original cloth covers, containing 8pp. Index and an ad for Bridgman on the front pastedown. 28 x 21 1/2 inches. Colourful 19th century pocket map of the New York and New Jersey suburbs, with all the railroad routes into the city shown. Before the "bridge and tunnel" crowd came the "rail and ferry" commuters. Following the Civil War, a new class of entrepreneurs created a fast growing upper/middle class which began building homes in the suburbs of Westchester and Northern New Jersey. Development of the transportation into the city quickly followed and this map was published by Bridgman for these "New York Businessmen." This map, on a scale of two and half miles to the inch, depicts the greater metropolitan area, roughly centered on Newark, NJ, as far north as the New York/New Jersey state line, as far south as Freehold, NJ, as far east as Inglewood, NY and as far west as Bedminster, NJ. The lower left corner is distorted out of scale to include Trenton. A profusion of towns are named, along with roads, waterways and some businesses. The area's many railroad lines are prominently shown, with the Westchester lines terminating at the new Grand Central Depot (opened 1871). Although there is no date on the map, it was published circa 1875 based on the fact that Grand Central Depot is named, there are no bridges over the East River and Morrisania is shown as part of New York County. Haskell, Manhattan Maps 1379 (suggesting a date of 1885)

A Very Good + copy of the first American edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original green cloth (spine ends lightly rubbed, leading corners of each board rubbed, a few marks to the boards and spine -- but a better copy than is usually seen); a wonderful novel which proved Trollope's continuing power as a novelist amid talk that his powers were waning. The book tells the story of the rise and fall of the fictional stock market manipulator, Augustus Melmotte -- and its effect on his daughter's options for marriage. The tale is an excellent social satire which Walpole deemed to be one of the most remarkable of all English novels published between 1860 and 1890. The story remains vibrant and has currency even today. A Very Good + copy.

Bologna Romagnoli 1875 8° Pagine XLI + 443 Bella legatura coeva in mezza pelle. Piatti marmorizzati. Titolo e ricchi fregi in oro al dorso a nervi. Conservate le brossure editoriali. Ottimo esemplare. (Carlo Cordiè, in Bompiani 2005, pag. 7991).         THE WRECK OF THE CHANCELLOR

1875. Translated by George M. Towle. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1875. Original blindstamped terra-cotta cloth decorated in gilt. First American Edition (and first edition in English).~An interesting account of the fate of a ship and its people, who were lost crossing the Atlantic. Setting out from Charleston, S.C., everything promised a speedy and pleasant voyage, and the passengers exchanged congratulations. A few days later and the dreadful cry of "fire" is heard! They fight the flames like heroes, but the ship is doomed. Hastily constructing a raft, they embark upon it, entrusting themselves to the mercies of wind and wave... [from an early promotional piece, cited in T&M]~This small, unillustrated volume was issued in Osgood's "Saunterer's Series" like TOUR OF THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS and DOCTOR OX beforehand (but is somewhat scarcer than those two); it was published in the Spring of 1875. Sampson Low's British edition, titled THE SURVIVORS OF THE CHANCELLOR, did not come out until November of that year (albeit in a much more attractive format). Though not mentioned on the binding or on the title page, this volume also includes the tale "Martin Paz."~This copy is in terra-cotta cloth stamped in gilt; we have also had green with gilt, blue with gilt, brown with black, and black with red (no known priority, though the gilt-stamped ones probably came first). This is a bright, near-fine copy (rear endpaper beginning to crack, very light rubbing at the extremities). Taves & Michaluk V014; Myers 47.
