        Album] Romances et Chansons

1875-6 1875 - Oblong, 28 by 19 cm. Unpaginated, 57 leaves, or 114 pp. with vignettes and larger illustrations, in ink and/or watercolored, on most pages, and with some lyrics written out in a neat calligraphic cursive hand also on most pages. The illustrations would appear to be all by one hand. While the many human figures depicted among them can have an awkwardness in their execution typical of the amateur effort, even these never lack for charm, and most of the other illustrations and ornamentation are pulled off with real brio. The artwork very much speaks to its period of the 1870s in dress and elements of taste. Overall, the album is quite extraordinary in its tight conception, scale and indeed, realization. One of the watercolors is signed Feraud, from which one can infer that a Feraud put together the entire album. Inner hinges cracked. Rubbing and wear to leather binding, and surface loss of paper pastedown to slipcase. Full Morocco, Slipcase with Paper Pastedown

        Shakespeare's Library

London - Reeves and Turner 1875 - A scarce edition ofShakespeare's Library edited by William Hazlitt. Rebacked in cloth with the original paper-covered boards. Volumes I - VI, complete. This is aset of the plays, romances, and poems that inspired the works of Shakespeare. William Shakespeare, d. 1616, was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. William Hazlitt, 1778 1830, was an English writer, remembered for his humanistic essays and literary criticism, and as a grammarian and philosopher. He is now considered one of the great critics and essayists of the English language, placed in the company of Samuel Johnson and George Orwell. During his lifetime he befriended many people who are now part of the 19th-century literary canon, including Charles and Mary Lamb, Stendhal, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm. There is some mildwear to the extremities, including some mild bumping. Internally the pages are generally clean with slight browning to the page edges. There is a small closed tear to the front free-endpaper of volume 4. Overall thecondition is very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

New York, n.d.. Ca. 1875. 12 x 8-1/2 inches, in an archival mat. Pen and ink on paper, with Chinese white. Fine . A very pleasing design by Will, advertising his studio school at Broadway and Astor Place, where he taught drawing and painting, as well as executing commissions for Harper's, Scribner's, The Century and other magazines, and books. Will (1834-1910) was born in Germany and came to New York at the age of 21. He was a painter in oil and watercolor, and an illustrator and draftsman, although his first work to be exhibited at the National Academy, in 1858, were four crayon portraits.         Adventures of Tom Sawyer

American Publishing Company 1875 - First Edition, with mixed points. This scarce book has the first edition points of 1875 printed on the copyright page, and 1876 on the title page. Later editions have a later year such as 1879. The binding is exceptionally nice, with minor wear to the spine ends and corners. Besides light wear to the panels, this copy is rich in colors. The pages are in good shape with the exception of the first five pages starting with the title page that have a tear to the right of the page. However, it doesn't effect any of the text, and for a book over 100 years old, it's hard to find a perfect copy. Besides some light soiling to a few other pages, the pages are in good shape. Overall, an attractive copy in collector's condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Way We Live Now

London: Chapman and Hall, 1875. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, bound in 3/4 blue leather with coordinated blue cloth, top edge of the closed page blocks gilded (board edges, spine tails, and board corners modestly rubbed, some rubbing to the spine heads with some tiny splits where the spine heads meet the board edges); a wonderful novel which proved Trollope's continuing power as a novelist amid talk that his powers were waning. The book tells the story of the rise and fall of the fictional stock market manipulator, Augustus Melmotte -- and its effect on his daughter's options for marriage. The tale is an excellent social satire which Walpole deemed to be one of the most remarkable of all English novels published between 1860 and 1890. The story remains vibrant and has currency even today. A Very Good copy.

        Rallicula Forbesi (Forbe's Rail)

London 1875 - John Gould (1804-1881) was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor, from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became and expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was about to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. While is Papua New Guinea, he decided to embark on a final folio as a complement to his unprecedented Birds of Asia. The Birds of New Guinea was Gould's last full-scale work, left incomplete on his death in 1881. Gould completed twelve of the twenty-five parts, and the task of finishing the project fell to Richard Bowdler Sharpe, a superbly qualified successor, who had been Gould's colleague, assistant and friend. One of Gould's most exotic works, the five magnificent volumes of the Birds of New Guinea contain an extensive series of beautiful images of birds of paradise, bower birds, parrots, parakeets, cockatoos, kingfishers and hawk-owls. All of the 320 images are extraordinary for their color and artistry, interesting backdrops and animated compositions. Gould and Sharpe created some of their most engaging and active scenes of bird life in the Birds of New Guinea, and the great popular reception of the work was such that it was one of their only productions that led to a sequel, Sharp's Birds of Paradise (1891-98). Missing from that later production, however, was the almost overwhelming variety of species of the Birds of New Guinea, which, like the Birds of Asia, was the most comprehensive chronicle of the island's ornithology ever issued. This folio size, hand-colored lithograph, Rallicula Forbesi measures 14.75" x 21.5" and is in mint condition. More commonly known as Forbes's Rail, these birds are expertly colored and finely detailed. The fine lines creating the patterns of feathers give the birds added dimension. Their coloring, a burnt orange, is further emphasized with black and white detailing. As they rest on the waters edge, one bird looks questioningly at a small bug, crawling along the underside of a leaf.

Gute Expl. Am bekanntesten ist Spencer durch das Konzept "survival of the fittest" geworden, welches er in seinem Buch "Principles of Biology" (1864) beschrieb, nachdem er Darwins "On the Origin of Species" gelesen hatte. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

New York: Baker & Godwin, 1875.. viii,[3]-443pp. plus three colored folding maps. Modern three-quarter calf. Embossed library stamp on titlepage and first page of text, three leaves with slight fore-edge chipping, not affecting text. Maps neatly reinforced on folds. Very good overall. A rare report on the troubles along the Texas-Mexico border in the years following Texas' independence and eventual absorption into the United States. This is the English- language edition of the lengthy report of the Mexican Commission sent to investigate the issue, and its printing was ordered by the Mexican government (a Spanish- language edition was published the same year). All manner of crimes were taking place along the border, including robbery and horse and cattle rustling. Americans blamed Mexicans for the crimes, while the Mexicans alleged that Americans dressed as Indians were the perpetrators. An American commission had already investigated, and absolved Americans of wrongdoing. This Mexican report puts the blame on the Americans, and argues that the Norteamericanos either refuse to control the Indians within their borders, or in fact encourage them to raid into Mexico in order to destabilize the neighbor to the south. Accounts of the troubles, dating back many years, are given in detail herein, blame is assigned, and solutions are proposed. The folding maps include a version of Josiah Gregg's 1844 "Map of the Indian Territory Northern Texas and New Mexico," a map of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon (showing the routes taken by raiding parties), and a large and attractive "Mapa del Rio Grande." The highly accomplished map of the Rio Grande is one of the most accurate and important of the period, showing the river from its mouth to the Big Bend, and identifying towns, rivers, mountains, forts, roads, and ranches along the border. "A work of great documentary value" - Decker. A fascinating account of clashes between cultures - American, Mexican, and Native American, along this long borderland. This report is scarce in and of itself; it is rather rare with the three maps, as here. HOWES I32, "aa." GRAFF 2765. ADAMS HERD 558, 2264. DECKER 40:324. EBERSTADT 122:197.

        PITTA FORSTENI - Hooded Pitta

London 1875 - ***If you frame up this item with Arader Galleries you can take a 50% discount off the listed price of this work of art*** This splendid hand-colored, folio size lithograph from John Gould's (1804-1881) outstanding work "Birds of New Guinea " is in excellent condition, measures 14 ½” x 21 ½” and magnificently displays the author's scientific skill and attention to detail. Gould conceived of this sweeping, lavish book as a complement to his unprecedented Birds of Asia. The Birds of New Guinea, published in London from 1875 to 1888 was Gould's last full-scale work, left incomplete on his death in 1881. The overwhelming variety of species depicted in Birds of New Guinea, was the most comprehensive chronicle of the island's ornithology ever issued. John Gould was without question the most prolific natural history artist of the nineteenth century. He worked during a period of intense fascination with discoveries in natural history, especially regarding knowledge of the wildlife of exotic lands. Gould shared the romantic enthusiasm of his time for such subjects, as well as the popular impulse to catalog exotic wildlife. He combined his passion for natural history with outstanding scientific, artistic, and entrepreneurial talents. Drawing on these abilities, he embarked on a series of projects that would eventually make him the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian Britain. Gould’s unparalleled career spanned five decades, and he produced a monumental series of books of birds throughout the world. Rich, vibrant color is an important attribute of the best 19th Century prints. Many prints by John Gould found on the market today have modern color that affects both the appearance and the value of these great works. John Gould died in 1881 still actively illustrating and producing fine bird books. His stock of unsold copies, unbound text and plates in various states, lithographic stones, drawings and paintings, amounted to nearly three tons. Many of the uncolored pulls from Gould’s works have been recolored in the last thirty years, and these are often found on the market. Fortunately, the difference between original and modern color can be discerned by looking carefully at the print. When modern color is applied to 180 year old paper, the application is inconsistent; the cellulose of the aged paper has begun to breakdown and can no longer evenly absorb the watercolors, resulting in a splotchy uneven appearance. All of the Gould bird prints in Arader Galleries' inventory have exquisite original color. The vastly superior quality of original color can be clearly differentiated from new color by its smooth and even appearance. The inks have noticeably deeper, richer tones. The difference can also be seen in the lovely surface "sheen" that results from the application of gum arabic when the lithograph was first pulled. The hand coloring of engravings and lithographs reached its zenith in the 19th Century. Works that still display their original color are more rewarding to view, and will better hold their value in the years to come.
