[WWV 86d]. Götterdämmerung... Vollständiger Klavierauszug von Karl Klindworth.

Mainz: B. Schott's Söhne [PN 21500]. [April 1875]. Folio. Contemporary dark brown tooled half calf with dark green cloth boards, decorative initials "P.R." to upper, gilt titling to spine in ruled compartments, all edges gilt. 1f. (general title, "Der Ring des Nibelungen), 1f. (title), 1f. (half-title), [1] (cast list and contents), 2-357, [i] (blank) pp. Lithographed throughout. Cloth portion of binding slightly stained, worn and frayed at edges, light blue watered silk endpapers slightly soiled. Slightly foxed and browned. . First Edition. Fuld p. 465. Deathridge, Geck and Voss (WWV) p. 402. Klein p. 51. The general title and half title are common to the full scores of all four Ring operas. Götterdämmerung is the fourth opera in the Ring cycle. Excerpts were first performed in a concert at the Musikverein in Vienna on March 25, 1875; the entire work was first performed as part of the Ring cycle at Bayreuth on August 17, 1876. "The final opera of the Ring... provides an appropriately weighty conclusion to the epic cycle. 26 years elapsed from the time Wagner made his first prose draft for the work (then called Siegfrieds Tod) to the completion of the full score, with inevitable consequences in terms of stylistic unity. Retrogressive elements of grand opera exist side by side with motivic integration representative of WagnerÂ’s most mature style. And yet, the stylistic integrity of Götterdämmerung is scarcely compromised, so skilfully are the disparate elements welded together and so intense the dramaturgical conviction. The resources and stamina demanded by the work (from both singers and orchestra), combined with its sheer length and theatrical potency, make it one of the most daunting yet rewarding undertakings in the operatic repertory."         A History of North American Birds . Land Birds .

Little Brown and Company, Boston 1875 - (10 1/2 x 8 inches). 64 hand-coloured lithographs and numerous illustrations. Extra-illustrated with 36 hand-coloured lithographs after Ridgway. Publisher's purple cloth, coveres bordered in blind, upper covers and spine lettered in gilt (spines slightly faded) A rare deluxe, coloured and extra-illustrated edition of Baird, Brewer and Ridgway's classic of American ornithology. "This work contains a description of the birds of North America north of Mexico, including Greenland and Alaska. The focus of this work is an account of the life history of the species, to which is added information about the geographical distribution of the birds and a brief descripion of the eggs and the individual species. Baird and Ridgway supplied the descriptive parts of the work, while Dr. Brewer dealt with the habits of the birds" (Anker). Little Brown & Co. advertisements confirm that their Land Birds was issued with 64 plates (uncolored at $10 per volume, or coloured at $20 per volume). However, a letter from the librarian at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia published in the October 1902 issue of the Auk reveals the existence of the present deluxe issue of the Land Birds, with additional hand-coloured plates after Ridgway: "While the existence of an edition of this work with these plates may be known to many ornithologists, yet there is no printed record of such, as far as the present writer is aware. No mention of these plates is made in Coues's 'Bibliography' nor in the several reviews of the 'Land Birds' to which I have had access. Dr. C. W. Richmond informs me that Mr. Ridgway has never seen a copy of the work with these plates although he has some loose plates in his possession" (letter from William J. Fox published in The Auk , October 1902). Neither Nissen, Anker, Zimmer nor Sitwell mention this deluxe issue. A contemporary advertisement (in an 1882 edition of The Scientist's International Directory), however, reveals that this deluxe extra-illustrated issue "beautifully colored by hand" was available for $75 in cloth (as here) or $95 in full morocco. "One of the great works on North American ornithology and for many years a standard reference . the first major work on North American birds to supersede Audubon's Ornithological Biography of 1831-39 as a comprehensive general source" (Ellis Collection). We have only once before encountered the deluxe, extra-illustrated hand colored issue. Nissen 63; Anker 25; Sitwell, Fine Bird Books , page 75; Ellis Collection 137; Zimmer, p. 34.         The Dialect of the English Gypsies (an Important association copy)

Asher & Co, London 1875 - "Second Edition Revised and Greatly Enlarged". 312 pp all original HB in three-quarter green leather. Boards plain green cloth. Five raised bands. Oct: 15 x 22 cms. Spine label in brown/red leather gilt. This copy of particular interest for three reasons: 1. The volume contains a very large number of hardwritten annotations, in the form of explanations and additional words from the Gypsy language. These are in two different hands; 1a) In black ink, and in many places clipped off the edge of the sheet by the binder, i.e., added by the annotator at the "proof" or "galley stage" prior to trimming and binding. Most likely the Author's copy. 1b) the later set of annotations are all within the page, and in pencil. In the section of the book devoted to the Gypsy-English Vocabulary (pp 50 to 156), there are 110 annotaions involving new words or explanation of words. 3. The Title Page is stamped "Beckford House. 20 Lansdown Crescent. Bath". This is a very interesting and important association relating to the famous English eccentric William Beckford (1760-1844. q.v) and his purchase of property in Bath. We refer readers here to the relevant Wikepedia article [Beckford entered parliament in 1784 as member for Wells and later for Hindon, quitting by taking the Chiltern Hundreds; but he lived mostly in seclusion, spending much of his father's wealth without adding to it. In 1822 he moved to Bath, where he bought No. 20 Lansdown Crescent (this copy offered here is from the Library of this house and is dated 1875, thirty-one years after his death) and No. 1 Lansdown Place West, joining them with a one-storey arch thrown across a driveway. In 1836 he also bought Nos. 18 and 19 Lansdown Crescent, leaving No 18 empty to ensure peace and quiet]. Our Title Page is shown attached. Jpg's of text annotations with pleasure, on request.

        SOUVENIR DE LA BELLONE, 1870-71-72

[Np, but possibly Paris, 1875. Folio. Contemporary green half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Spine faded. Lightly rubbed at extremities. Bookplate on front pastedown. First plate lightly age- toned. Some very minor scattered foxing, else bright and clean internally. Very good. A volume of engravings depicting the voyage of the ship Bellone and seafaring life. Following the "title" plate, which is numbered 21, are scenes of Africa, primarily in Senegal. These plates depict the natives, villages, and cities. After the scenes of Africa are plates depicting maritime life, evidently on a French naval vessel in the Atlantic. These images are much more delicately engraved and are not numbered. The first few of these detail a "day in the life" of a sailor, from morning muster and breakfast, through scrubbing the deck and inspection, and shore leave. Two plates of Uruguay and two unidentified landscapes are also inexplicably inserted in the midst of this sequence. An interesting and perhaps unique compilation of travel and maritime images.

He made important and comprehensive observations of the sun, which he began studying in 1851. Secchi was particularly interested in sunspots and solar flares, and the beautiful colored plates in this set include many illustrations of a wide variety of solar flares. The text also includes descriptions of many of the instruments he used in his researches. Secchi theorized that solar flares and sunspots probably had more effect on the weather and other natural phenomena on Earth than had previously been thought. Secchi was one of the first to adapt spectroscopy to astronomy in a systematic manner. He was also one of the first to apply the new technique of photography to astronomic use, making several daguerreotypes in the course of his researches during the solar eclipse of 1851).         JOC-O-SOT. / (THE WALKING BEAR) / A SAUK CHIEF FROM THE UPPER MISSOURI, U.S. AM

[London, 1875. In fine condition, apart from some small expert marginal repairs. A fine image from CATLIN'S NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN PORTFOLIO, one of the most important accounts of native- American life. Joc-o-Sot (Walking Bear, 1810-44), a Sauk Chief, took part in the Black Hawk War of 1832 when he was wounded. He later performed in Wild West shows in Europe and the United States. His wounds from the war of 1832 had apparently left him weak and, whilst traveling, he became ill and died in Cleveland on his way to Missouri. He was buried in the Erie Street Cemetery, in Cleveland. This is one of the six rare unnumbered plates, whose existence remained something of a mystery until recently, when research uncovered the true history of the production of the NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN PORTFOLIO. When Catlin first produced his work in 1844, he evidently intended his twenty-five-plate folio to be the first of four volumes, and had carried work forward to the point of having produced extra lithographic stones toward the next volume. However, the collapse of his finances ended this scheme, and the publisher Henry Bohn took over the copyright of the PORTFOLIO, producing twenty-five-plate versions until he sold the copyright to the publishers Chatto & Windus in the early 1870s. Chatto & Windus decided to enhance their reissue of the PORTFOLIO by printing the six extra plates, from stones which had existed unused for over thirty years. This is documented in their archives, now in the Reading University Library in England. Of the 140 sets located in the unpublished census, only about a quarter are of the thirty-one-plate issue. Thus, these six plates are four times scarcer than the other PORTFOLIO plates. Catlin summarized the American Indian as "an honest, hospitable, faithful, brave, warlike, cruel, revengeful, relentless, - yet honourable, contemplative and religious being." In a famous passage from the preface of his NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN PORTFOLIO, Catlin describes how the sight of several tribal chiefs in Philadelphia led to his resolution to record their way of life: "the history and customs of such a people, preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life shall prevent me from visiting their country and becoming their historian." He saw no future for either their way of life or their very existence, and with these thoughts always at the back of his mind he worked, against time, setting himself a truly punishing schedule, to record what he saw. From 1832 to 1837 he spent the summer months sketching the tribes and then finished his pictures in oils during the winter. The record he left is unique, both in its breadth and also in the sympathetic understanding that his images constantly demonstrate. A selection of the greatest of images from this record were published in the NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN PORTFOLIO in an effort to reach as wide an audience as possible. The present image is one of the results of this publishing venture and is both a work of art of the highest quality and a fitting memorial to a vanished way of life.

[ALBUM OF THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION AT PHILADELPHIA TO COMMEMORATE THE CENTENNIAL OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA]

New York, 1875. Large oblong folio. Original brown pebbled morocco, triple-ruled in gilt and lettered on front board, gilt dentelles, modern endpapers, a.e.g. Spine and corners expertly repaired. Text and plates foxed and dampstained. Very good nonetheless. The Centennial International Exposition of 1876 was the first World's Fair held in the United States, and commemorated the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The lithographs in this album depict the exhibition grounds in Philadelphia and the major buildings of the Fair, including the Art Gallery, the Women's Pavilion, and a bird's-eye-view of the Fair grounds. All were executed by noted New York chromolithographer Julius Bien. A front fly leaf contains a contemporary presentation inscription from the Fair's main architect and engineer, reading: "To Count d'Oultremont, Commissioner of Belgium, with the compliments of H.J. Schwarzmann, Chief Engineer of the Centennial Grounds, Architect of the Permanent Buildings, Philadelphia November 27th, 1876." This book was issued with a titlepage, not present in this copy. The original full morocco binding on this copy, and the fact that it was presented by the Fair's architect, indicate that this copy may have been specially set aside for presentation, and that it never contained the titlepage.

REPORTS OF THE COMMITTEE OF INVESTIGATION SENT IN 1873 BY THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT TO THE FRONTIER OF TEXAS

New York, 1875. Modern three-quarter calf. Embossed library stamp on titlepage and first page of text, three leaves with slight foredge chipping, not affecting text. Maps neatly reinforced on folds. Very good overall. A rare report on the troubles along the Texas-Mexico border in the years following Texas' independence and eventual absorption into the United States. This is the English-language edition of the lengthy report of the Mexican Commission sent to investigate the issue, and its printing was ordered by the Mexican government (a Spanish- language edition was published the same year). All manner of crimes were taking place along the border, including robbery and horse and cattle rustling. Americans blamed Mexicans for the crimes, while the Mexicans alleged that Americans dressed as Indians were the perpetrators. An American commission had already investigated and absolved Americans of wrongdoing. This Mexican report puts the blame on the Americans and argues that the Norteamericanos either refuse to control the Indians within their borders, or in fact encourage them to raid into Mexico in order to destabilize the neighbor to the south. Accounts of the troubles, dating back many years, are given in detail herein, blame is assigned, and solutions are proposed. The folding maps include a version of Josiah Gregg's 1844 "Map of the Indian Territory Northern Texas and New Mexico," a map of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon (showing the routes taken by raiding parties), and a large and attractive "Mapa del Rio Grande." The latter is a highly accomplished map, one of the most accurate and important of the period, showing the river from its mouth to the Big Bend, and identifying towns, rivers, mountains, forts, roads, and ranches along the border. "A work of great documentary value" - Decker. A fascinating account of clashes between cultures - American, Mexican, and Native American, along this long borderland. This report is scarce in and of itself; it is rather rare with the three maps, as here.

STATE of IOWA w/ 195 Pages of ENGRAVED MAPS & PLATES - Very Large Folio Atlas

Lakeside Press: Chicago, 1875. A.T. ANDREAS' ILLUSTRATED HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE STATE OF IOWA 1875. Published by the Lakeside Press, Chicago, 1875. First Edition. Very Large Format Hardcover Book, Elephant Folio 14x18", blind-stamped cloth covered boards, 590 numbered pages (though the printer's pagination is faulty in many spots). Filled with Engraved Maps, City Views, and Other Engraved Illustrations. CONDITION: The covers and spine are in POOR condition. The covers are detached, the spine is completely worn off, there is masking tape on the spine and on the covers' spine margins; additionally, the boards are bowing and rubbed, scraped, and worn through at many places. Internally, there is a previous owner's name/address writ large on the front pastedown; the last 10 pages and the blank free endpaper are in poor condition, with many vertical stiff creases where the book was probably shut on them incorrectly, with the leaf consisting of pages 585/586 disbound and very worn, and with the last signature (last few pages and the rear free endpaper) disbound; the first few pages (the printed title page, frontispiece, and title page) are chipped and worn along their edges and have a significant piece cut from their bottom corner area; otherwise the inner pages and ALL the Maps and Engraved Plates are in generally GOOD to VERY GOOD condition, some have small closed edge tears and edge and corner chips, a couple have a significant closed tear, overall they are solid with sharp edges, and printing that is bright and clear. One of the nicer sets of these plates I have seen. Andreas Atlases are known for poor pagination (unnumbered and improperly numbered plates, sections with no numbers, etc.) This Iowa Atlas is no exception. The pagination shows a variety of missing pages in the Plates section, but I have collated every single plate with the Index and ALL but 4 of the plates called for are present, and my guess is that even the 4 presumably missing plates were never actually in this 1875 printing (though of course I could be wrong). The first Arabic numbered page is page 7 which begins the large section of plates and maps. There are NO pages 1-6, as issued (though there are pages i-viii). PAGINATION (with my added comments): [i] Printed Title Page (the bottom margin has ink pen doodling, the bottom corner area is clipped); [ii] Frontispiece Engraving of Davenport (it also has the clipped corner area); [iii] Illustrated Title Page; [iv] Index; v-vii Index; [viii] Preface; 7-28 (page 7 is the first numbered page after prelim page viii and is the start of the large Engraved Maps and Plates section); 31-68 (leaf consisting of pages 57/58 has a 5" closed tear starting at the bottom edge; page 49 has light brown staining to the bottom area); 71-84; 87-96 (leaf consisting of pages 89/90 with 4" closed tear starting at the bottom edge); 99-100; 103-108 (107/108 with 2" closed tear starting at gutter); 111-112 (2" closed tear starting at bottom edge); 115-118; 121-123 (there are two pages numbered 122); 128-129; 131-138; 141-162 (pages 152-162 have 1" closed tears at their bottom gutter corner); 165-174; 177-190; 193-196; 199-212; 215-218; 221-236; 241-250 (this is the END of the Plates and Maps section). 251-280 (Biographical Sketches); 283-312 (History of Iowa); [313-336] (Post Offices); 341-424 (County Histories); 431-482 (Census. There are 7 pages all numbered 482); 482-536 (Patrons); 541-558 (Statistics); [559-589] 590 (the last 10 pages are in poor condition, with a single page and the last signature disbound, as noted above); Rear Free Endpaper. An actual count of the pages in the Engraved Maps and Plates section (accounting for the very poor printer's pagination) shows a total of 195 PAGES OF ORIGINAL ENGRAVED MAPS AND PLATES, plus the frontispiece and the engraved title page. This ORIGINAL 1875 EDITION, FOLIO SIZE ATLAS of IOWA is SCARCE. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This is a large, heavy book, that will require substantial additional shipping charges. Fair

Archive - Primary Source - Manuscript Letters & Documents, Including Sketches Pertaining to the Archeological Dig for Roman Coins & Wares in England

England, 1875-1878. Document archive of antiquary Dr. Thomas William Wake Smart, concerning one specific archaeological dig in England, the Roman coins and wares uncovered, ancient pagan worship of water springs and votive offerings. Comprising detailed 3 manuscript reports with hand drawn sketches, 19 manuscript letters addressed to Smart, 1 offprint, 1 manuscript list of references, and 13 newspaper reports. The lot contained in an archival folder labelled in manuscript. Very good condition, enlightening and exceptionally detailed. Dr. Thomas William Wake Smart (1805-1894) was a physician and respected antiquary who contributed several papers to the Archaeological Journal. He took a special interest in the antiquity of Dorset, and in 1841 published a book titled, "Chronicle of Cranborne, Being an Account of the Ancient Town, Lordship and Chase of Cranborne in The County of Dorset. Collected from Original Records, etc." The Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum holds an archive of Dr. Smart's documents, letters, notes and collections from 1887-1892. The present archive comprises primary source material in relation to the discovery of late Roman occupation at Horton in Dorset, a serendipitous finding made in 1875 by young boys which uncovered, among other things, relics of Emperor Constantine and his family. There is also mention of an ancient Benedictine abbey from the 7th century. The excavation project was managed and protected by J. Turnbull, agent of philanthropist Lord Shaftesbury, on whose property the discover was made. Objects unearthed on the north side of a pasture previously known as Horton Pond include brass coins, whole vases and pottery fragments, an iron spear-head. Six vases and one patera remained in perfect state of preservation, their origins well described herein. Dr. Smart was selected to conduct historical research and to document the dig. His work is thorough and discerning, comparing results of his colleague's painstaking inspections of coins and all other objects to other excavations in England and France, and carefully placing them into historical context. His conclusion presents ancient votive offerings as the reason for most of the deposit, the sacred fount itself being an object of veneration, and suggests further study for certain artefacts of various periods. Mr. C. Roach Smith (T.S.A., F.S.A.), an expert numismatist from Kent, examined and identified the coins. Some resembled those found in Anglo-Saxon graves. Over half of the specimens pointed to Emperor Constantine; the remainder were believed to span at least two centuries. At the time of discovery, the land was owned by Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, KG (1801-1885), styled Lord Ashley from 1811 to 1851 and then Lord Shaftesbury following the death of his father. He was an English politician, philanthropist and social reformer with an especially compassionate and forward-looking approach to the needs of children, not only advocating for their safety and basic human rights, but reforming numerous laws for their well-being and protection. The archive includes the following: Twenty (20) manuscript letters addressed to Dr. Thomas William Wake Smart containing pertinent details in regards to securing the site, retrieving luted objects, identifying the coins, and so forth. the objects and coins, and revealing other aspects . Eight letters plus one note, are from numismatist Mr. Roach who examined the coins found. Especially fascinating he refers to his earlier works of the same nature, and also mentions French archaeologist L'abbé Cochet. Eight are from G. H. Billington at the Chalburg Rectory who was involved in the collection and distribution of the objects for inspection. Excerpts from the letters : 9 June 1875. From Mr. Billington. "There has been a great discovery of coins, etc. at Horton... the vases are in excellent condition, one or two of which I hope to bring over for your inspection on Monday... I am now in visitation at Blandford. The spot where the coins are found is a spring at this end of what used to be Horton Lake." 19 June 1875. From Mr. Billington. "On the opposite page is an outline of the so-called piece of sword... It proves to be an arrow (or spear) brad... The police brought it to me last evening... he asked me if I had any objection to letting him have the coins, as Mr. Hammond was collecting them... he had secured 98 coins..." 10 September 1875. From C. Roach Smith. "Of the 51 coins you have sent me I have identified nearly all..." 13 July 1876. From C. Roach Smith. "The coins are easily identified. Two of the large brass are of Antonius Pius, & three of the younger Faustina. One of the small is of Allectus; the rest of them Constantine`s family. In what are supposed illegible or utterly defaced, a Gratian or Theodosius may be traced..." "Report on the Discovery of Roman Coins at Horton, Dorset. 1875" Signed Original Manuscript Report by Dr. Smart featuring a frontis sketch drawing. 8vo. 28 pages, with original signature to final leaf. These pages form a detailed account from the time of discovery to the final assessment of the excavated treasures, and further serve to illustrate how antiquities were both handled and regarded in the nineteenth century. Excerpts from the manuscript : "In the first week of June 1875 a remarkable discovery of Roman coins and fictile vessels was made in a meadow at the village of Horton... some boys were playing near the rivlet... found a small jar... some 30 or 40 small pieces of money..." "The news... soon spread amongst the villages, who... flocked to the spot and quickly set to work to explore... put to a stop by the agent of the Earl of Shaftesbury, Lord of the Manor, who put in his claim..." "... adding a few more corroded coins to those already collected, together with... a short iron spear or javelin-head, its socket and point eaten away by rust; some animal bones (blackened) by age and chemical action; horses` teeth; a few flints bearing marks of having been chipped by hand; a disc of bronze; and a small red amber bead. Eventually were recovered some 140 coins and seven small and perfect vases..." ... ancient legend recorded by William of Malmesbury... there is, he says... having reference to this locality... by the munificence of Ordgar reckoned among the Abbeys, but is now destroyed (circ:1140)... This Ordgar, Earl of Devon, who founded the Abbey of Horton, AD 961, was the father of Elfrida, whose name is associated with the treacherous assassination of her step-son Edward, at the gate of her Castle at Corfe" "The coins are all of brass... to be identified only by an expert numismatist, many of them so corroded... were submitted to the inspection of Mr. Roach Smith... soon succeeded in identifying many well-known types of certain Roman Imperial coins... the striking fact has been elicited, that the coinage of the Emperor Constantine and his family is far more numerously represented than that of all other reigns put together..." "The most plausible explanation that suggests itself is, that the vases and coins were placed in the bed of the springs from a religious motive... offerings to the Numen, Nymph, or Genius Soci, who was presumed to preside over and guard its precincts." "The Fons Sacer was an integral part of Ancient Pagan Superstition..." "... it still remains an open question, whether the earlier series of coins, although comparatively few, may not indicate a succession of periods of periods when the votive offerings were made, extending over the space of two and a half centuries..." "On the Worship of Springs" also by Dr. Smart [1875]. 8vo. 8 pages. The author's own retained manuscript copy, also featuring a frontis sketch drawing, and accompanied by a signed manuscript letter from the British museum acknowledging its future publication. An annotation by Smart confirms that this work was printed in the Journal of the British Archaeological Association, Volume 32, March 1876. "The Fountain of Coventina at Protolitia on Hadrian`s Wall, England." Author: J.C. Bruce, published 1877. Offprint, 10 pages, with 1 manuscript sketch drawing by C. Roach Smith pasted within. Thirteen (13) newspaper reports dated 1876-1878 on archaeological discoveries at Procolitia, and two (2) sketch drawings of the site by C. Roach Smith, neatly mounted to ten leafs in a purpose-made handbook, titled in manuscript, "Procolitia. Discovery of Roman Coins and other objects, particularly an altar inscribed to the Dea Coventina in an old well at Chollerford, a station on the Roman Wall..." Manuscript extract from "Collectanea Antique... Chester, Its Roman Remains" by C. Roach Smith. Transcribed by Dr. Smart, with additional extracts and notes dispersed throughout. 8vo. altogether 14 pages in manuscript, with 1 sketch drawing, penned circa 1877/78. A manuscript bibliographical list of Smart's researches into ancient Latin texts. . Very Good.

        Gran'ther Baldwin's Thanksgiving

Loring, Boston 1875 - Bound in terra cotta cloth. Covers show light soiling and edgewear and lightly bumped corners. Gold-stamped text on the spine and gold-stamped wheat sheaf on the front cover are bright showing light fading. The title on the spine reads "Grandfather Baldwin's Thanksgiving" rather than "Gran'ther Baldwin's Thanksgiving". The spine and hinges are secure and straight. There is a former owner bookplate pasted onto the inside front cover. The pages are clean and unmarked. 125 pages plus a flyleaf and dark brown coated endpapers. There is an inscription on the ffep that reads: "F.A. Munsey / with the regards of / Horatio Alger, Jr. / Nov 1882 _". Horatio Alger, Jr. (1832-1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, best known for his many juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty. F.A. (Frank Andrew) Munsey (1854-1925) was an American newspaper and magazine publisher and author. Munsey, at age 28, and with almost no money to his name, published the first issue of his first magazine, "Golden Argosy", on December 2, 1882 just days after Alger presented him with this copy of "Gran'ther Baldwin's Thanksgiving". Munsey, who idolized Horatio Alger, Jr's stories of self-made boys, included the first installment of a serialization of a previously unpublished Alger novel, "Do and Dare; or, A Brave Boy's Fight for Fortune" in this inaugural issue. Munsey went on to publish 30 (at least) serialized novels by Alger, encouraging Alger to use pseudonyms (as necessary) to maximize Alger's output. Ironically, "Gran'ther Baldwin's Thanksgiving" is a collection of Alger's poetry, rather than one of novels of self-made boys which Munsey prized, and for which Alger is best remembered. This copy provides a significant historical intersection point in the lives of two notable 19th century american literary figures, and is also a very rare association/presentation inscription from one american icon to another.         Digest of Patents relating to breech-loading and magazine small arms, (except revolvers) granted in the United States from 1836 to 1873, inclusive. Classified and arranged according to the movement of the principal parts for opening and closing the breech

Washington, 1875. Quarto. (11 5/8 x 9 inches). 1p. small format errata tipped onto rear pastedown. 780 patent-drawings photo-lithographed (up to ten to a page) on 84 full-page illustrations by N. Peters of Washington. Bound to style in half calf over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, spine with raised bands in six compartments, ruled in gilt on each band, lettered direct in the second and fourth compartments Provenance: Allen P. Westcott (Chicago, firearms consultant in legal cases, ink stamp) An important and rare work on American breech loading and small arms, published in a relatively small edition. No copies of this work are listed as having sold at auction, but it was important and rare enough to warrant a facsimile reprint in 1963. On the dust-jacket of that edition it was noted that the "Digest is the only existing compilation of U.S. Patents of breech-loading and repeating small arms ... As a means for identifying trial or experimental pieces (usually unmarked on the guns themselves) this reference work is without parallel." The Preface describes the work as follows: "This digest has been prepared from the official records of the United States Patent Office, and with a view to present the subject in a brief yet comprehensive manner, for the information of inventors, manufacturers, attorneys and others interested in the art. It has been the purpose of the compiler to group all patents relating to breech-loading and magazine fire-arms granted in the United States ... in such a manner that they may be readily referred to, and the numerous and important improvements made in both sporting and military arms, traced. All inventions ... have been classified and arranged according to well-defined characteristics or systems, depending upon the movement of the principal parts for opening and closing the breech. The index of names is an alphabetical-chronological list of inventors, and is the key, in connection with the number or date, by which information ... may be obtained from the Patent Office."
