[Steam Locotmotive] An original ink and watercolour drawing of an American steam locomotive

[United States, 1875. Original pen, ink and watercolour drawing on wove paper of a Mogul type locomotive, all within original ink ruled border, signed by the artist on the rail at the far right side. An expertly rendered drawing of one of the most powerful locomotives from the golden age of steam locomotion in the United States. The first American-built locomotive, the Best Friend, came into service in 1830. Lomomotive production reached its zenith in the decade following the Civil War, at the time of the present drawing. This "mogul" type locomotive is shown with cowcatcher and a 2-6-0 wheel configuration (2 small wheels at the front and six large driving wheels in the rear), a large headlamp with an American eagle emblem on its side, a wooden cab on which is neatly written "Mogul" and a riveted fire box below the boiler which shows a B within a six-pointed star within a circle. This powerful Mogul type locomotive was used primarily as a freight engine and was produced by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and Brooks Locomotive Works. The artist of the present drawing, G. H. Cushman, has signed his work at the bottom right on the rail.

LES RUINES DE PARIS EN 4875. DOCUMENTS OFFICIELS ET INÉDITS.

Paris: Librairies Léon Willem . Paul Daffis . , 1875 - pp. [1-4] [1-3] 4-92 [93] [94: blank] [95: colophon] [96: blank], inserted frontispiece with engraving by E. Tavernier, original Japanese velum printed in black. First edition. Limited to 250 copies of which this is one of 236 numbered copies printed on Holland paper. A pessimistic vision of the future in which the ruins of Paris, destroyed two thousand years before by an apocalyptic cataclysm, are discovered by an expedition from Nouméa in Caledonia. Nearby a modest city inhabited by a group of semi- savages who speak a language similar to French is discovered. The description of the society of its inhabitants offers Franklin the chance to ridicule the ancient and recent customs of the French. The government of Nouméa funds the excavation and restoration of the city of Paris to its former glory and the archeologists from the three principal Nouméan Academies (Arts, Humanities and the Sciences) make funny misinterpretations of many of the artifacts they find (a similar, much later satire in the same vein is Robert Nathan's THE WEANS). Negley, Utopian Literature: A Bibliography 392. Fortunati and Trousson (eds), Dictionary of Literary Utopias, 542-3. Versins, p. 350. A fine copy. (#151230) [Attributes: First Edition]

        Ceres

Britain 1875 - Classically inspired competition design for a plaster wall, executed en grisaille in blue and grey tones. The design is centered on an oval image with a depiction of the Roman earth goddess Ceres, seated on a chariot drawn by a griffin. The imagery generally reflects Ceres¿s role in Roman mythology as the goddess of grain and agricultural fertility. The oval is surrounded by four roundel male heads, two wreathed in wheat, two in grape leaves. In each corner, young men in togas perform agricultural tasks, perhaps intended to represent four of the 12 minor gods who assisted Ceres with agricultural tasks (e.g. Insitor who sowed, and Obarator, who plowed). Below the oval a pair of cornucopias are filled with agricultural produce, and above is a sheaf of wheat. Ceres also holds a torch, emblematic of her association with the Roman tradition of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The whole is in a classical border with rosettes in the corners and center. The offered Ceres work is accompanied by a handwritten card that probably is a section of the mat it was originally framed with. The label states this was an entry "In Competition for the prizes of the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers [sic] London." A surviving fragment of a paper label shows part of the artist¿s name, and his or her age, 21. The Worshipful Company of Plaisterers is a plasterers¿ trade guild based in London that was chartered in 1501, and continues as the British association for plasterers and dryline (drywall) finishers today. The organization ran art student competitions as early as 1875. Insofar as the title on the label accompanying the Ceres work is also the same as the title of the prize as reported in 1875 (both wall designs), it may be presumed that Ceres was another work entered in that competition, or one shortly before or after. Condition: Generally very good with the usual overall light toning and wear. Tape residue verso from where formerly hinged. Fragments of original entry label affixed upper right. Competition title label, presumably from former matting, later affixed lower margin. Note: As a large artwork, extra shipping charges may apply.

The Narcissus: Its History and Culture.

      L. Reeve & Co.,, London 1875 - 8vo (24.5 x 16.5 cm) Original cloth boards with gilt title and author on spine and Narcissus on cover, spine slightly sunned. Marble end papers. Collation: [ix]-xvi [1]-95pp + 48 hand-colored, lithographic plates. Excellent study on the genus Narcissus with beautifully executed lithographic plates by Burbidge with contemporary hand coloring. This is a very good copy in original cloth. "Burbidge, Frederick William Thomas (1847&1905), horticultural writer and explorer, was born at Wymeswold, Leicestershire, on 21 March 1847, the son of Thomas Burbidge, farmer and fruit grower, and his wife, Mary Spencer. He was educated at village schools and entered the gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society at Cheswick as a student in 1868, proceeding in the same year to the Royal Gardens, Kew. Here he showed skill as a draughtsman and was partly employed in making drawings of plants in the herbarium. Leaving Kew in 1870 he joined the staff of Garden magazine where he stayed until 1877, writing under the pseudonym Veronica. He also wrote for The Floral Magazine. During this period he published a number of works including Cool Orchids and How to Grow Them (1874), [Narcissus: Its History and Culture(1875)]and Cultivated Plants, their Propagation and Improvement (1877). These works drew much appreciation from contemporaries including Gladstone. Many of the plates included were drawn by Burbidge himself. In 1877 he was sent by the nursery firm James Veitch & Sons as a collector to Borneo. He was absent for two years, during which time he also visited Johore, Brunei, and the Sulu Islands. He brought back many remarkable plants, especially: pitcher plants, such as Nepenthes rajah and N. bicalcarata; orchids, such as Cypripedium laurenceanum, Dendrobium burbidgei, andAërides burbidgei; and ferns, such as Alsophila burbidgei and Polypodium burbidgei. The chronicle of his journey was published in 1880 as The Gardens of the Sun, or, A Naturalist's Journal on the Mountains and in the Forests and Swamps of Borneo and the Sulu Archipelago. The first set of the dried specimens brought back by him numbered nearly a thousand species, and was presented by Veitch to the Kew herbarium. Sir Joseph Hooker named the scitamineous Burbidgea nitida 'in recognition of Burbidge's eminent services to horticulture, whether as a collector in Borneo, or as author of Cultivated Plants, their Propagation and Improvement, a work which should be in every gardener's library' (Botanical Magazine, 1879, tab 6403). Though of only moderate ability as a cultivator, Burbidge was noted for his horticultural writings and expert draughtsmanship." ( G. S. Boulger, rev. Engraved frontispiece portrait to Volume I. Spines slightly sunned, minor wear to spine ends and corners, joints of a few volumes cracked but firm, light offsetting from frontispiece. An excellent set. An attractively bound late reprint of the Gifford edition of Jonson's works, originally published in 1816. "Gifford's editorial work as a textual scholar is accomplished. He produced various editions of English dramatists … Gifford's most notable textual work was on Jonson, of whom he was a fierce partisan. His edition contains forthright attacks on bardolators who had dared to speak evil of Jonson as well as the customary splenetic condemnations of the flaws of rival scholars" (ODNB).

[WWV 86d]. Götterdämmerung... Vollständiger Klavierauszug von Karl Klindworth.

Mainz: B. Schott's Söhne [PN 21500]. [April 1875]. Folio. Contemporary dark brown tooled half calf with dark green cloth boards, decorative initials "P.R." to upper, gilt titling to spine in ruled compartments, all edges gilt. 1f. (general title, "Der Ring des Nibelungen), 1f. (title), 1f. (half-title), [1] (cast list and contents), 2-357, [i] (blank) pp. Lithographed throughout. Cloth portion of binding slightly stained, worn and frayed at edges, light blue watered silk endpapers slightly soiled. Slightly foxed and browned. . First Edition. Fuld p. 465. Deathridge, Geck and Voss (WWV) p. 402. Klein p. 51. The general title and half title are common to the full scores of all four Ring operas. Götterdämmerung is the fourth opera in the Ring cycle. Excerpts were first performed in a concert at the Musikverein in Vienna on March 25, 1875; the entire work was first performed as part of the Ring cycle at Bayreuth on August 17, 1876. "The final opera of the Ring... provides an appropriately weighty conclusion to the epic cycle. 26 years elapsed from the time Wagner made his first prose draft for the work (then called Siegfrieds Tod) to the completion of the full score, with inevitable consequences in terms of stylistic unity. Retrogressive elements of grand opera exist side by side with motivic integration representative of Wagner?'s most mature style. And yet, the stylistic integrity of Götterdämmerung is scarcely compromised, so skilfully are the disparate elements welded together and so intense the dramaturgical conviction. The resources and stamina demanded by the work (from both singers and orchestra), combined with its sheer length and theatrical potency, make it one of the most daunting yet rewarding undertakings in the operatic repertory."         A History of North American Birds . Land Birds .

Little Brown and Company, Boston 1875 - (10 1/2 x 8 inches). 64 hand-coloured lithographs and numerous illustrations. Extra-illustrated with 36 hand-coloured lithographs after Ridgway. Publisher's purple cloth, coveres bordered in blind, upper covers and spine lettered in gilt (spines slightly faded) A rare deluxe, coloured and extra-illustrated edition of Baird, Brewer and Ridgway's classic of American ornithology. "This work contains a description of the birds of North America north of Mexico, including Greenland and Alaska. The focus of this work is an account of the life history of the species, to which is added information about the geographical distribution of the birds and a brief descripion of the eggs and the individual species. Baird and Ridgway supplied the descriptive parts of the work, while Dr. Brewer dealt with the habits of the birds" (Anker). Little Brown & Co. advertisements confirm that their Land Birds was issued with 64 plates (uncolored at $10 per volume, or coloured at $20 per volume). However, a letter from the librarian at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia published in the October 1902 issue of the Auk reveals the existence of the present deluxe issue of the Land Birds, with additional hand-coloured plates after Ridgway: "While the existence of an edition of this work with these plates may be known to many ornithologists, yet there is no printed record of such, as far as the present writer is aware. No mention of these plates is made in Coues's 'Bibliography' nor in the several reviews of the 'Land Birds' to which I have had access. Dr. C. W. Richmond informs me that Mr. Ridgway has never seen a copy of the work with these plates although he has some loose plates in his possession" (letter from William J. Fox published in The Auk , October 1902). Neither Nissen, Anker, Zimmer nor Sitwell mention this deluxe issue. A contemporary advertisement (in an 1882 edition of The Scientist's International Directory), however, reveals that this deluxe extra-illustrated issue "beautifully colored by hand" was available for $75 in cloth (as here) or $95 in full morocco. "One of the great works on North American ornithology and for many years a standard reference . the first major work on North American birds to supersede Audubon's Ornithological Biography of 1831-39 as a comprehensive general source" (Ellis Collection). We have only once before encountered the deluxe, extra-illustrated hand colored issue. Nissen 63; Anker 25; Sitwell, Fine Bird Books , page 75; Ellis Collection 137; Zimmer, p. 34.         The Dialect of the English Gypsies (an Important association copy)

Asher & Co, London 1875 - "Second Edition Revised and Greatly Enlarged". 312 pp all original HB in three-quarter green leather. Boards plain green cloth. Five raised bands. Oct: 15 x 22 cms. Spine label in brown/red leather gilt. This copy of particular interest for three reasons: 1. The volume contains a very large number of hardwritten annotations, in the form of explanations and additional words from the Gypsy language. These are in two different hands; 1a) In black ink, and in many places clipped off the edge of the sheet by the binder, i.e., added by the annotator at the "proof" or "galley stage" prior to trimming and binding. Most likely the Author's copy. 1b) the later set of annotations are all within the page, and in pencil. In the section of the book devoted to the Gypsy-English Vocabulary (pp 50 to 156), there are 110 annotaions involving new words or explanation of words. 3. The Title Page is stamped "Beckford House. 20 Lansdown Crescent. Bath". This is a very interesting and important association relating to the famous English eccentric William Beckford (1760-1844. q.v) and his purchase of property in Bath. We refer readers here to the relevant Wikepedia article [Beckford entered parliament in 1784 as member for Wells and later for Hindon, quitting by taking the Chiltern Hundreds; but he lived mostly in seclusion, spending much of his father's wealth without adding to it. In 1822 he moved to Bath, where he bought No. 20 Lansdown Crescent (this copy offered here is from the Library of this house and is dated 1875, thirty-one years after his death) and No. 1 Lansdown Place West, joining them with a one-storey arch thrown across a driveway. In 1836 he also bought Nos. 18 and 19 Lansdown Crescent, leaving No 18 empty to ensure peace and quiet]. Our Title Page is shown attached. Jpg's of text annotations with pleasure, on request.

        SOUVENIR DE LA BELLONE, 1870-71-72

[Np, but possibly Paris, 1875. Folio. Contemporary green half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Spine faded. Lightly rubbed at extremities. Bookplate on front pastedown. First plate lightly age- toned. Some very minor scattered foxing, else bright and clean internally. Very good. A volume of engravings depicting the voyage of the ship Bellone and seafaring life. Following the "title" plate, which is numbered 21, are scenes of Africa, primarily in Senegal. These plates depict the natives, villages, and cities. After the scenes of Africa are plates depicting maritime life, evidently on a French naval vessel in the Atlantic. These images are much more delicately engraved and are not numbered. The first few of these detail a "day in the life" of a sailor, from morning muster and breakfast, through scrubbing the deck and inspection, and shore leave. Two plates of Uruguay and two unidentified landscapes are also inexplicably inserted in the midst of this sequence. An interesting and perhaps unique compilation of travel and maritime images.
