Reich illustrierter Sammelband zur Gründung des Malteser Sanitätsdienstes in Österreich.

Wien, Seidel, 1875-1879. - 25 x 16 cm. [ANNA KARENINA: FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT] Anna Karenina // Russkiy vestnik [Russian Herald]

1875. vol. CXV, nos. 1-4; 1876, vol. CXXI, nos. 1-2, vol. CXXII, nos. 3-4, vol. CXXVI, No 12; 1877, vol. CXXVII, nos. 1-4. 8vo, pp. [243]-336, [1], [742]-817, [2], [246]-316, [1], [572]- 641, [1], [305]-390, [679]-745, [1], [291]-339, [1], [641]-693, [1], [687]-737, [1], [267]-324, [1], [830]-898, [329]-382, [709]- 763, [1]. Any sections of text not from Anna Karenina are covered in old paper. Inkstains to first few leaves, edges guarded, some mild staining and fingermarking in places, some marginal waterstaining towards the end. Contemporary half morocco, re-backed preserving original spine. All parts bound together. Anna Karenina was serialized in Russkiy Vestnik in 1875. This copy was created by a devoted reader who removed all the parts from 13 issues of the journal and bound them in a single volume. Owing to a political disagreement between Tolstoy and the journal's publisher, Mikhail Katkov, over Serbian independence (Katkov and his journal were in favour, and Tolstoy was against) the last part of the story was never printed. A complete edition (with the final part) was published in book form in 1878, but this was the only separate edition (that is, excluding collections and selections) during Tolstoy's lifetime. Rare both as an example of devotion to Tolstoy by an unknown reader and as the first appearance in print of this canonical text.

London, Harrison and Sons, 1875. - Folio. VI, 139, (1) pp. Publisher's printed blue wrappers. The relevant sections are "Zanzibar" (pp.1-89); "Muscat" (p. 90); "Reports from Naval Officers [relative to the East African Slave Trade]" (pp. 96-139). - Neat stamp on the upper cover.         Autograph letter signed.

[London], 20. I. 1875. - 4to. 1 p. In French, to the Parisian printer Louis Justin Lahure (ca. 1850-1878), who was supposed to be producing the French edition of "Das Kapital" but had lately been trying the author's patience: "Monsieur, Vous recevez aujourd'hui deux paquets contenant p. 982-1033. ("Dear Sir, You receive today two packets containing pp. 982-1033. Only 28 pages, forming the conclusion of the manuscript, are outstanding. There remains the afterword, as well as table of contents and the errata, which I cannot prepare without having before me all the as yet unpublished livraisons. As you apparently do not wish to answer my letters nor send proofs, nor seem desirous so far to make up your mind, I advise you that my time is not absolutely at your disposition [.]"). On the same day, Marx wrote to Max Oppenheim in Prague, describing his preoccupation with the French translation of the "Capital" and noting that he has introduced many changes and additions to the final parts of the French edition. Ten days later, Marx wrote to his publisher Lachâtre in Brussels, announcing his having finally completed the manuscript. He explains once more that he cannot go ahead with the table of contents, errata or afterword without the unpublished fascicles and complains that Lahure has stopped printing altogether three months previously: "He has not even returned the proofs of livraisons 34 and 35, and I am now beleaguered with other work [.] As I do not wish again to write to this gentleman, I would request you to communicate to him your instructions" (cf. MEW 34, p. 120, no. 4). According to the contract with Lachatre, the "Capital" was to appear in 44 livraisons of one print sheet each. In fact, five such instalments were combined into a series, so that the French edition was published between September 1872 and November 1875 as livraisons I through IX. Not in: MEW 34 (Berlin 1966): Briefe Jan. 1875-Dez. 1880.

Panorama of Constantinople in 10 parts.

      - Constantinople, G. Berggren, ca. 1875. Original photograph, albumen print, in 10 parts (242 cm on a 270 cm mount) in original dark red cloth portfolio, with gilt title in arabic. With original mounted label Bergrenns: G. Berggren, Photographe de S. M. Le Roi de Suède et Norvège. Graande Rue de Pera No. 414, Constantinople. Inner joints as usual somewhat faded but in all a very nice panoramic view. Berggren, Guillaume (1835-1920), Swedish photographer who started work as an apprentice carpenter in 1850. He left Sweden in 1855, learned photography in Berlin, and settled in Constantinople in 1866, opening a studio in the Grande Rue de la Pera in the early 1870s. Berggren combined studio work - portraits of travellers and dignitaries, with the option of posing in Turkish attire - with the sale of prints offering a range of Ottoman motifs. He photographed the street scenes and architecture of Constantinople, including all its mosques, and the landscapes, ruins, and major religious sites of the Bosporus region. He also recorded developments and events such as the construction of the Anatolian railway, and the inauguration of the Orient Express in 1883. In the 1890s he made a remarkable series of documentary portraits of Constantinople's working people: bakers, street sellers, harbour workers, and prostitutes. LI + [1] + 838 + [2] s. Eksemplar med usædvanlig rene plancher indbundet i slidt samtidigt halvlæder, ryggen løs på tekstbindet. Medindundet Jonas Collin: Ornithologiske Bidrag til Danmarks Fauna. Udgivet som Supplement til "Skandinaviens Fugle." Kbhvn. 1877. 28 s.With 106 beautiful handcoloured plates with 4-6 birds on each. Textvolume in 8vo, platevolume in 4to. Bound in contemporary halfleather with goldprint on spines, bindings marked of use, spine loose on textvolume. With a few exceptions the plates are unusually clean. First collected description of Scandinavian birds. Very rare with all the 106 handcoloured plates (Plate 107 publ. as late as 1888 is uncoloured and as ususal not present) showing more than 600 hundred different species. Kjærbølling, who was not a scientist, used Naumann's book on the birds of Germany plus his own collection of ca. 4,000 copies of taxidermy as model for the drawings, which he drew and lithographed himself. The work was very popular from the beginning with an impression of ca. 500 copies, which was relatively large, taken the population into account. As a recognition of his work Kjærbølling was given the garden of Princess Wilhelmine on Frederiksberg where he later the same year opened the Zoological Gardens. Nissen 496. Anker 250. Sitwell p. 86.

        Etymonia.

8vo., (6) 258pp., including the half-title, and with a 16-page Tinsley catalogue dated September, 1875, at end, the first three leaves (including the title-page) rather foxed, dampstain on front endpapers, in the original gilt cloth binding, dampstain at foot of upper boards, head and foot of spine neatly repaired. A good copy nonetheless, with the bookplates on front pastedown of R.C. Hyde and Max Salomon. "An eutopia founded by a geometrician" [Lyman Tower Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature 1516-1975, 1979, p.31]. An utopian novel of sorts, but not well regarded either then or now, set on an imaginary island in the North Sea. "We shall speak quite plainly about the author of Etymonia. He does not seem to possess any imagination or sagacity, or indeed, any ability, literary or other. How, then, does he try to interest his readers? By following Sir Robert Walpole's advice. The one talk, that cynical old man of the world was wont to say, in which all men can join, is indecent talk. And the author of Etymonia treats his readers as Sir Robert used to treat his guests. A very great part of this book is discreditable to both author and publisher". [The Spectator Archive]. * Authorship not agreed. Sargent suggests Davis, others put it all down to the publisher himself.
