        Etymonia.

8vo., (6) 258pp., including the half-title, and with a 16-page Tinsley catalogue dated September, 1875, at end, the first three leaves (including the title-page) rather foxed, dampstain on front endpapers, in the original gilt cloth binding, dampstain at foot of upper boards, head and foot of spine neatly repaired. A good copy nonetheless, with the bookplates on front pastedown of R.C. Hyde and Max Salomon. "An eutopia founded by a geometrician" [Lyman Tower Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature 1516-1975, 1979, p.31]. An utopian novel of sorts, but not well regarded either then or now, set on an imaginary island in the North Sea. "We shall speak quite plainly about the author of Etymonia. He does not seem to possess any imagination or sagacity, or indeed, any ability, literary or other. How, then, does he try to interest his readers? By following Sir Robert Walpole's advice. The one talk, that cynical old man of the world was wont to say, in which all men can join, is indecent talk. And the author of Etymonia treats his readers as Sir Robert used to treat his guests. A very great part of this book is discreditable to both author and publisher". [The Spectator Archive]. * Authorship not agreed. Sargent suggests Davis, others put it all down to the publisher himself.

History of Arthabaska: The name of Arthabaska was suggested at the end of the eighteenth century, by John Gregory, fur trader, probably in honor of a vast lake in western Canada, where he worked for North Company. In 1858, the township of Arthabaska consists judicial district after the construction of the railway. In 1861, a portion of the town was detached and was named Victoriaville. In 1890, Sainte-Victoire-d'Arthabaska is formed as a result of a new detachment. Later, in the late nineteenth century, there detach the village of Arthabaskaville, completely surrounded by St. Kitts d'Arthabaska. In 1903, the city becomes Arthabaskaville Arthabaska. Finally, in 1993, three localities or Victoriaville, Arthabaska and Saint-Victoire-d'Arthabaska, come together to form the current city. In the new city, the population chose the name Victoriaville for the new city. Arthabaskaville has always distinguished itself as a village culture.         Paypyros Ebers.

- Already in the papyrus itself the pages XXVIII and XXIX are not numbered. There is, however, no text omitted. - Printed in France by Folio Imprimerie Cooperative, Saint-Julien-du-Sault. Epiphi (9. Ipip) im 9. Regierungsjahr des Amenophis I. vermerkt." The Commentaries of the Great Afonso Dalboquerque, Second Viceroy of India.

Original pale blue diapered cloth, title gilt to the spines, gilt ship device to the front boards, repeated on the lower in blind, blind panelling to both boards, blind rules to the spines, pale cream surface-paper endpapers. A little rubbed, spines mildly tanned, some neat restoration to the spines, joints and hinges, but overall very good for this poorly produced series, largely unopened First edition, first impression of the first English edition. Afonso d' Albuquerque the Great (1453-1515), was one of the most striking personalities in the history of Portuguese discovery and colonialism and is the founder of the Portuguese Empire in the East Indies. Albuquerque advanced the Portuguese scheme of securing the trade of spices and the establishment of a vast Portuguese Asian empire. He was the first European to enter the Persian Gulf, led the first voyage by a European fleet into the Red Sea, and also the first westerner to reach the coast of South-Eastern Arabia: "In 1506 Albuquerque was despatched from Lisbon on an expedition, intended to consolidate Portuguese supremacy in the Indian Ocean. His instructions were to monopolise trade with East India for Portugal, and to exclude both Venetians and Saracens from Indian waters ... Attacks were made on the Arab ports at Malindi, Hoja, Lamu and Brava, before continuing to Socotra ... Sailing from Socotra with six ships, Albuquerque coasted the Arabian peninsula, sacked Muscat and Sohar, and then launched an attack on Hormuz during the months of September and October 1507. In spite of the overwhelming forces assembled against him by the island's twelve-year-old ruler, Albuquerque mounted a successful siege, with the result that the ruler become a vassal of the Portuguese crown ... The famous 'Commentaries' ... were published by his son Alfonso ..., collected from his father's papers. The only documents actually originating from the father are in the form of letters" (Howgego I, 19-21). Bookplates of the American financier, philanthropist and collector Henry Marquand to the front free endpapers, neat letter-press plates of the library of St. Paul's School, Concord, NH, of which Marquand was a benefactor, to the pastedowns.

@Revista occidental. @Iº anno, tomo primeiro, fasiculos 1-6, and tomo segundo, fasciculos 1-5 [all published].

Lisbon, Escriptorio da Revista Occidental, 15 February to 15 July 1875.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 11 issues in 2 volumes. Large 8°, original printed wrappers, uncut, in two folding cases with crimson leather spines, gilt with raised bands in five compartments, marbled boards on all other sides. In fine condition. Engraved armorial bookplates of D. Diogo de Bragança (Lafões) on front sides of cases. 768; 639, (1) pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION, a COMPLETE RUN of this rare Portuguese periodical containing the first appearance of @O Crime do Padre Amaro, @[bold]one of the best and most important novels ever written, the first novel written entirely by Eça de Queiroz, and certainly one of his most important works. (@O Mistério da estrada de Sintra, written in collaboration with Ramalho Ortigão, had appeared in 1870.) Eça had serious disagreements with the editors of the Revista, Antero de Quental and Batalha Reis, regarding corrections to his work, and was very dissatisfied with the published result. He substantially revised it for the first edition in book form, published in 1876. The Revista Occidental includes works in Portuguese by such noted authors as Antero de Quental, Manuel de Arriaga, Luciano Cordeiro, Gonçalves Crespo, Oliveira Martins and Gomes Leal, and also works in Spanish by Cánovas del Castillo, Pi y Margall, Jacinto Octavio Picón and Patricio de la Escosura. The rarity of this periodical, especially with all the original wrappers present, has led to some confusion among bibliographers regarding the number of issues and the dates of publication - doubtless mostly because only the original printed wrappers indicate the fascicle number and date of publication. The only published record of an actual copy we have been able to locate, sold in the Fernandes Thomaz sale in 1912, has the same dates of publication as this copy and the same number of issues, and is described as "collecção completa." Two copies handled by us in the early 1990s, one sold in the summer of 2001, and one sold in the summer of 2012, all had the same collation as the present one. @Provenance: Dom Diogo de Bragança (Lafões) (Lisbon, 1930-Lisbon, 2012) was an accomplished equestrian, author of books on dressage, and a dedicated bibliophile whose collection focused on books about horses and horsemanship, plus works on Portuguese history and literature. Dom Diogo used the courtesy title Marquês de Marialva, by permission of his elder brother, Dom Lopo de Bragança, Duque de Lafões, the actual holder of the title. For the bookplate, see Avelar Duarte, @Ex-libris portugueses heráldicos. See also @Anuário da Nobreza de Portugal, III, Tomo I (1985), pp. 20-1. *** Fernandes Thomaz 4352. Guerra da Cal 29: stating that the work appeared from February 1875 to July 1876, in only 7 fascicles. Silva Pereira, @Journalismo portuguesa p. 130: giving the dates of publication as 15 Feb. to 30 Aug. 1875. @Grande enciclopédia XXV, 433: giving the same dates of publication as Silva Pereira. @Union List of Serials locates volume I to volume II, nº 5 (giving the dates as Feb. 1875 to Jan. 1876) at CU. Not located in NUC.
