BERT, Paul.
Paris: G. Masson, 1874. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, offprinted from the Annales des Sciences Naturelles for April of the same year, of Bert's first book on high and low pressure physiology, a précis of his monumental La Pression Barométrique which was then in production. This book contains the essence of some of his findings presented in full in his larger work. It may properly be described as an incunable of the new science of hyperbaric medicine. The recipient of the this copy, Louis Antoine Ranvier (1835-1922), was the foremost histologist in France in the latter part of the nineteenth century. He would have known Paul Bert well -- Ranvier succeeded Bert as préparateur for Claude Bernard at the Collège de France, and both were teaching in Paris at the same time.8vo, 2 leaves, pp. 170, (1), 6 plates of Bert's apparatus. Half-title. Original green printed wrappers (discoloured and dust-soiled), uncut. Small pale stain in upper margin almost throughout, otherwise a very good copy. Presentation copy, inscribed by Bert in the upper corner of the front wrapper: "M. Ranvier. Souvenir affectueux, P. Bert", and with the stamp of the histology department of the Collège de France in the other corner.

Crelier, Henry Joseph, schweiz. Theologe, Hebräist u. Schriftsteller (1816-1889).
Porrentruy (Pruntrut), St.-Ferriol, Besancon u.a., 1851-1874. [Click Below for Full Description]

TAYLOR, J.
Ferguson 13171a. First edition of a mineralogical map, showing the entire province of New South Wales, together with an index to the colours and a list of proclaimed gold fields. There are no separate text pages, instead the letterpress explanatory text is printed on the inside of the front wrapper (general chapter about the province) and in 7 sections on the back of the folding map. Six of these sections list all kinds of relevant data collected in 1874 and 1875, such as population, trade per head of the population, figures of international trade, length of railways, amount of live stock, and the output of the coal, tin, gold and copper fields. The final section advertises the province for settlers in a series of 11 "advantages of new South Wales as a home for the emigrant", such as ready employment, cheap cost of living, good soil and climate, great mineral resources, Sydney and its harbour, etc. "All this may be enjoyed among a people whose whole social lise is so like Home that it is scarcely possible for the emigrant to feel like 'a stranger in a strange land'" (advantage 10).Edges of wrappers faded with a tiny tear. A very good copy of this mineral map.

Beach, Charles A
[Northampton?]: Not published, 1874 - 1878. Unique.. Contemporary half leather notebook.. Very good; binding worn and broken; some marginal chipping.. 4to, 159 pp. with original ink and watercolor drawings on 56 pages. A stunning 159 page manuscript. A diary of events as experienced and recorded in chronological order by Charles Beach during his confinement in several asylums in Europe between 1874 - 1878. Accompanying the account are 56 pages of Beach's own watercolor renderings of his delusional life. Beach was born in 1844 and died in 1913. He was trained as a lawyer and was the author of a children's fantasy book entitled Pitzmaroon or the Magic Hammer (a copy accompanies the diary). The onset of his madness was some time around 1872/'73. By that time he had married a German woman he met while traveling. Together they returned to Europe and sought the help of Dr. Ludwig Meyer. Meyer (see Kirchhoff, Deutsche Irrenarzte ...., vol.2, pp. 75 -82) had an appointment at Gottingen and was a recognized authority on treating the insane. He was credited with introduction of humane treatment of the insane, free of restraints, in Germany. He maintained a residence hospital for his patients. It is here that Beach was first admitted for care. Months were to pass. Beach's delusions and torments were now pronounced and daily. All are recorded in the diary. The delusions were, for the most part, sexual (Beach felt the 'mesmerizers' were controlling him). Accompanying these are complex word associations and dissociated thoughts. By the winter of 1874/75 Beach states that he was going t … [Click Below for Full Description]

(JAPAN: TOKYO.) PURCELL, Theobald Andrew.
Yokohama: n.p.,, 1874. Octavo. Original blue sand-grain cloth neatly rebacked, blind panelling on covers, gilt lettering on front cover. 24 wood-engraved plates (most with loosely inserted tissue guard). A few stains and marks to covers, on plate with a touch of pencilled colour, some light signs of handling. A very good copy. First edition of one of the earliest accounts of Japanese daily life from a Western perspective to be published in Japan; inscribed on the title page by the author's father: "T. A. Purcell QC" (c. 1818-1894). Rare: among British and Irish institutional libraries Copac cites only British Library (two copies), OCLC adds Universitatsbibliothek Hamburg and National Diet Library (Japan). At this time, very little printed material was produced at Yokohama for Europeans. It was later published in Britain as A Suburb of Yedo (London: Chapman and Hall, 1889). This is a fascinating and delightfully illustrated series of sketches of customs and occupations as observed in a "retired and quiet suburb" of Tokyo (Yedo) and was originally published in the Japan Weekly Mail, but here "in a measure revised and, indeed, in some instances rewritten" (Preface). Each short chapter is given over to such subjects as the saké shop, the stone mason, the barber, the sparrow catcher, the fortune teller, the flute player, the kamikudsuhiroi (or "picker up of paper-scraps"), the mikoshi (or divine palanquin used in Shinto), and a Buddhist baptism (nagare-kanjo); the charming plates were most probably drawn by a Japanese artist. T. A. Purcell (1841-1877) was an Irish doctor who ser … [Click Below for Full Description]
