[Madrid: Sancho Rayón, 1874] - [i.e. 1874].- // 4º, (236x157mm.).- [7] h., [1] en blanco.- // Cubiertas originales, con rasgaduras en el cantos, en color ocre.Intonso. Utopia

(Francesco Lioce in D.B.I., LXXXIV, 2015). Italiano

      - 1 page. Octavo (ca. 168 x 122 mm). Dated Thursday evening. In black ink on mourning stationery. In French (with translation). "I have to attend [?Louis] Laloy's premiere; naturally that is tomorrow, on Friday. Would you change the enclosed tickets for Saturday? Thanks again."Slightly worn and browned; creased at folds and upper outer corner of final blank folio; small rust stain from paper clip to inner margin of final folio, not affecting text. "One of the most important musicians of his time, [Debussy's] harmonic innovations had a profound influence on generations of composers. He made a decisive move away from Wagnerism in his only complete opera Pelléas et Mélisande, and in his works for piano and for orchestra he created new genres and revealed a range of timbre and colour which indicated a highly original musical aesthetic." François Lesure and Roy Howat in Grove Music Online."Laloy was a noted defender of contemporary French music and was a close friend of, and mediator between, Ravel and Debussy, with whom he collaborated on some unrealized stage works; he was also the author of the first major work (and the first in the French language) on Debussy."         Bondekone med barn, hund og ko. Tusch og lavering.

1874 1874 - Signeret 'Til Frøken Anna Hansen fra Nicolai Habbe i Januar 1874'. 29x23 cm. I let beskadiget træramme [39,5x33 cm.]. [Weilbach].

Some Leading Principles of Political Economy Newly Expounded

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1874. Octavo. Original brown pebble-grain cloth, titles to spine gilt, panelling to boards in black, black coated endpapers. Tips a little ribbed, light spotting to contents. An excellent, bright copy. First edition. Cairnes (1823?1875), often described as the "last of the classical economists", was a key Irish political economist who developed and critiqued the work of John Stewart Mill. This, the last major book published in his lifetime, is a commentary on the principal doctrines of the English school of economists, such as wages, value, and labour. As he writes in the preface, his purpose here is "'to strengthen and add consistency' to the fabric constructed by Smith, Ricardo, Malthus, and Mill; and since in that work he defended the wages-fund doctrine after Mill had abandoned it, and showed himself unsympathetic towards Jevons's new approach to value theory it left a last, and lasting, impression of Cairnes as a very conservative political economist, which was not wholly deserved" (ODNB).

Illustrations of China and its people. A series of two hundred photographs, with letterpress descriptive of the places and people represented.

London, Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1873-1874. - Large folio. 4 vols. 110 ff., 74 blanks. With 218 collotype photograph views and portraits on 96 plates. Illustrated original cloth. All edges gilt. First edition of this monumental photographic work, recording the diversity of Chinese culture during the late 19th century in a wealth of views, portraits, and public scenes. The Scottish photographer John Thomson (1837-1921), a pioneer of photojournalism, was one of the first photographers to travel to the Far East, documenting the people, landscapes and artifacts of eastern cultures. After settling in Hong Kong in 1868 and establishing a studio there, Thomson spent four years travelling throughout China: he saw the southern trading port of Canton, the cities of Beijing and Shanghai, and the Great Wall, venturing deep into central China. He visited the Fukien region in 1870/71, travelling up the Min River by boat and proceeding to Amoy and Swatow. On the island of Formosa he visited the capital, Taiwanfu, before journeying on to the aboriginal villages on the west plains of the island. Three months were spent travelling 3000 miles up the Yangtze River to Hupeh and Szechuan. Thomson's travels in China were often perilous, as he visited remote, almost unpopulated regions far inland. Most of the people he encountered had never seen a westerner or camera before. Thomson had to transport a bulky wooden camera, many large, fragile glass plates, and potentially explosive chemicals. He photographed in a wide variety of conditions and often had to improvise because chemicals were difficult to acquire. His subject matter varied enormously: from humble beggars and street people to Mandarins, Princes and senior government officials; from remote monasteries to Imperial palaces; from simple rural villages to magnificent landscapes. - Many of the plates have German captions carefully pencilled in. Bindings professionally restored at extremeties, spines rebacked. Removed from the Geographical Institute of the University of Vienna, with their library stamp throughout and deaccession stamp to title pages. A fine set. Gernsheim 288f. OCLC 3384592. Measures Approx 106 x 80 Inches (265 x 195 cm approx). 4 sections. Each section has been professionally seen by a museum approved archival restorer about 4 years ago. Not that it needed it, but to preserve it as found. The image has NOT been touched each sheet was protected with a thin skin of special poster restoration material. No signs, no extra thickness, not noticed unless mentioned here. The images will speak for themselves and more can be provided if requested. It is a GENUINE period item and NOT a copy. **Charles Joseph Carter (June 14, 1874 - February 13, 1936) was an American stage magician, also known as Carter the Great. A native of San Francisco, California, Carter began his career as a journalist and lawyer. As time passed, he grew an interest in magic. Due to stiff competition from the number of magic acts on the American stages at the time, Carter opted to pursue his career abroad, where he achieved his greatest fame. Among the highlights of Carter's stage performances during his career were the classic "cheating the gallows", where a shrouded Carter would vanish, just as he dropped at the end of a hangman's noose. This poster depicts the climax of that act. The Poster is done in lithography with the colours put on separately by the foremost America Film poster company OTIS of Cleveland. The colours are vibrant, there are some light creases now strengthened where the once rolled poster has been opened once to often, but these are now permanently sorted. No loss and still having the colour grid at border and also the measurement cross-hatching for the poster to be aligned when pasting up. A LOVELY and Unique POSTER that would suit a home with style, or for a Magic Museum type setting. Dates to about 1918-25 Carter (Charles Joseph) purchased the famous Martinka Magic Palace In San Fransisco in 1917, a time when he was unable to continue his lucrative world touring magic show. There was a story that he kept his lion, Monty in the back room of the shop and when it would roar, the startled customers would run for the door. He was the Magicians answer to Houdini who was an "escapologist". Carter was the consummate stage prestidigitator par-excellence, to Houdini's talented lock picking breath holding feats of the pre-Great War era. A fictionalized account of his life can be found in Carter Beats the Devil. This Poster with have with it a "SIGNED first edition of the 2001 UK 1st of this book Pre-dates the US version) AND a New York Tribune 1918 review of the "Temple of Magic" opened in 1918. This is a single page and is a facsimile of some sort, possibly 1950's-60's

        Autograph letter signed ("Ch. Darwin").

Down, Beckenham, Kent, 7 Sept. [1874]. - 8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. To the British architect William Cecil Marshall (1849-1921), whom Darwin engaged to build an extension to Down House on the north side (a billiard room with dressing room and bedroom above) in 1876, thanking him for some Pinguicula leaves, from which he has picked off sixteen seeds: "My dear Mr Marshall, I am very grateful to you. Your observations are excellent, & are put most clearly & will be very useful to me. I have picked off 16 seeds from this lot! The plant is certainly to a certain extent graninivorous also somewhat graminivorous, though mainly insectivorous. The rain, I know washes off the secretion & with it captured insects (& as you say seeds), which are retained by the incurved edges, which then become more incurved. It is a pretty experiment to put a row of flies or cabbage seeds on one margin of a flat leaf & see how the edge of the side curls over in from 12 to 24 hours. With cordial thanks, Yours very sincerely [.]". - Traces of folds; professionally repaired. On stationery with printed address. Darwin Correspondence Project no. 9627F.

        Trojanische Alterthümer

Contemporary patterned paper boards, gilt fillets to spine forming compartments, Gothic title gilt to second on red ground. Vignette title page, full-page line-drawing, occasional symbols and Greek types to the text. Extremities rubbed, old shelf-mark label to spine extending slightly over covers, various library ink-stamps to title page verso, pale foxing, variable faint tide-mark to fore and top edges, marginal ink-spot to p. XXXVI. A good copy. First edition. Schliemann's successful identification of Hisarlik in north-west Anatolia as the site of Homeric Troy is still considered today "the greatest of all archaeological finds" (PMM). His methods, which involved the destructive use of dynamite, were widely criticised by later scholars, but at the time his account of his discovery enjoyed a popularity unequalled by any previous work in the field. Schliemann, the son of a pastor from Mecklenburg, made his fortune in business before devoting himself entirely to proving the reality of the Homeric epics. "In 1870 [he] started work at Hisarlik and by 1873, at the lowest stratum, he laid bare vast fortifications destroyed by fire and discovered a treasure of gold jewellery ? What Schliemann had in fact discovered is now known to be a pre-Achaean city, long preceding the Homeric city; but he had proved his initial thesis: here was the real site of Troy" (idem).
