        May du Maurier

"Albumen print, original mount. 34 x 27.5 cm. Inscribed and signed on the mount by Cameron: "From life, registered photograph, copy right, Julia Margaret Cameron, Freshwater, Sep. 1874." Very good condition. This is an unrecorded portrait by Julia Margaret Cameron, the foremost British portrait photographer of her time. "How masterly ... are her straightforward, truthful portraits, which are entirely free from false sentiment." "It is they which have made her work immortal in the annals of photography" (Gernsheim). "After receiving a camera as a gift, Julia Margaret Cameron began her career in photography at the age of forty-eight. She produced the majority of her work from her home at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight. By the coercive force of her eccentric personality, she enlisted everyone around her as models, from family members to domestic servants and local residents. The wife of a retired jurist, Cameron moved in the highest circles of society in Victorian England. She photographed the intellectuals and leaders within her circle of family and friends, among them the portrait painter George Frederick Watts, the astronomer Sir John Herschel, and the Poet Laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson. She derived much of her subject inspiration from literature, and her work in turn influenced writers" (Getty Museum) Cameron declared that "My aspirations are to ennoble Photography and to secure for it the character and uses of High Art by combining the real and Ideal and sacrificing nothing of the Truth by all possible devotion to Poetry and beauty." In September 1874 illustrator and novelist George Du Maurier, his wife, and his daughter May came to Cameron's home at the village of Freshwater on the Isle of Wight and sat for portraits. This image is unrecorded in Cox and Ford, Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs, which lists four portraits from the occasion (nos. 213-215 and 940). Cameron quotes Du Maurier as saying that her photography "charms me." Provenance: George du Maurier, and by descent.".

A collection of 11 photographs including 8 superb photographs of Castillo San Marcos, the oldest military structure in the continental United States and 3 of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine first built in 1565 and rebuilt in the 1790s

Eleven albumen prints (6 x 8 in.), mounted and captioned in a contemporary hand. Very good condition. This remarkable collection of early Florida photographs documents two of the most important early structures in Florida history: the fort Castillo de San Marcos and the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine. Built in 1672 the fort is the only extant 17th-century military structure in the continental United States. The church, located in the oldest parish of the United States (founded in 1565), was built in the 1790s. The eight photographs of Castillo San Marcos are: 1. Interior of Fort St. Marco. South West Corner showing entrance to Indian Prison. Old Well in the foreground. St. Augustine. Fla. 2. Interior of Fort St. Marco Showing entrance to Chapel. St. Augustine. Fla. 3. Interior of Fort St. Marco. Southeast Corner showing entrance to Dungeons. Chapel on the left. St. Augustine. Fla. 4. Fort St. Marco. South Front. Showing Drawbridge and Moat. St Augustine. Fla. 5. Doorway. Fort St. Marco. St. Augustine. Fla. 6. Entrance to Fort St. Marco. St. Augustine. Fla. 7. General view of South Front, Lunette Battery, and Moat, from parapet. Fort St. Marco, The Bay. Anastatia island, and Lighthouse in the distance. St. Augustine. Fla. 8. South Front from Parapet Fort St. Marco. Showing Drawbridge and Moat. St. Augustine Fla. The three photographs of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine read: 1. Catholic Church. St. Augustine. Fla. 2. Catholic Church. The oldest church on the continent of America. St. Augustine. Fla. 3. Catholic Church. St. Augustine. Fla. Protecting St. Augustine Florida (the oldest continuously occupied European settlement within the United States and near the site of Ponce de León's first landing in 1513) the Castillo San Marco was built while the Spanish Empire controlled Florida. Construction of the masonry fort began in 1672 after a devastating raid on the city by the British privateer Robert Searles. Over the centuries, Spain, Great Britain, the United States, and the Confederate States of America all controlled the fort. Several times over the course of its history the fort was used as a military prison. During the American Revolutionary war, the prisoners included Christopher Gadsden, the Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina and a delegate to the Continental Congress. Beginning in 1862 the United States used the fort as a military prison for Native Americans for several decades. One of the images shows the jail that was used for their confinement while another shows dungeons that were presumably used for the same purpose. In later years members of Geronimo's band of Apache warriors, including women, children, and Geronimo's wife were imprisoned. Ledger Art, a prominent art form among Plains Native Americans, began at the fort. Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is located in the oldest parish in the United States, having been founded in 1565. In 1586 Francis drake destroyed the first church, built in 1565. In 1566 Martín de Argüelles was born in the parish, the first recorded birth of a child of European ancestry in what is now the continental United States. DATING. The photographs showing the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine allow us to date the entire group, which are on identical mounts and have captions in the same hand. Due to the presence of a side chapel built in 1873, the absence of the rectory built in 1875, and the presence of a stonewall destroyed in 1875 we ascribe a likely date to the series of ca. 1874. The photographs display consistent tones, dimensions, mounts, inscriptions, and aging across the collection. These images appear to be unrecorded. We have made a comprehensive online survey of photographic collections of the time and place, consulted the Library of Congress's digital archives, and queried area historical societies.

Illustrations of China and its People

Sampson Low, Marston, Low and Searle, London 1874 - (18 1/2 x 13 3/4 inches). 222 collotype photographic illustrations on 96 plates. Publisher's maroon morocco-grain cloth, front covers with large pictorial designs and letters blocked in gilt, bevelled boards, expertly rebacked to style, blue endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in two red morocco backed boxes. Provenance: Ladyman (booklabel in vols II-III), Hugh Lupus, 1st Duke of Westminster (1825-1899) Thomson's China: the first large-scale photographic documentation of China and a visual encyclopedia of its lands and peoples. Born in Edinburgh in 1837, it is believed that Thomson learned the photographic arts in his school years in that city. He first travelled to the far east in the late 1850s or early 1860s to visit his brother in Singapore, settling in Penang in 1862 at the age of twenty-five and opening his first photographic studio. However, studio photography did not interest him nearly as much as travelling the streets and countyside to capture the peoples and places he encountered. Between 1862 and 1868, Thomson travelled in Singapore, Ceylon, India, Siam, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In 1868, he arrived in Hong Kong: "it was a new beginning both in his life and his work . His fascination with the culture of China, the immense size of the country, and the opportunity it offered him to chronicle unexplored regions, all intensified his desire to travel there" (White, p. 17). Making four distinct journeys between 1870 and 1872, Thomson explored South China, Foochow and the River Min, Formosa, North China, Peking, Shanghai and the Yangtze. Returning to London in 1872, he shortly thereafter began work on the present work -- his most ambitious project. "My design in the accompanying work" Thomson writes in the Introduction, "is to present a series of pictures of China and its people, such as shall convey an accurate impression of the country I traversed as well as of the arts, usages, and manners which prevail in different provinces of the Empire. With this intention I made the camera my constant companion of my wanderings, and to it I am indebted for the faithful reproduction of the scenes I visited, and of the types of races which I came into contact." The selected 222 images were published on 96 plates, being collotypes produced from Thomson's original albumen photographs. "His imagery ranges from strict documentary to the picturesque, from an elegant straightforwardness to a photographic lyricism. His eye was that of the quintessential Victorian traveller, an incisive flaneur wandering the streets of exotic lands, and an educated geographer. His motivation for photographing was to capture the essence of these unforgettable and never-before-photographed regions, and to obtain permanent records for visual delectation, instruction and verification" (White, p. 8). "This ambitious work . was the first photographic survey of the Chinese nation, providing portraits, street scenes, monuments and landscapes. It was the first travel book to be successfully illustrated with photomechanical facsimiles of albumen prints replicated in the recently perfected collotype process" (Truthful Lens). "The photographs taken on these journeys form one of the most extensive photographic surveys of any region taken in the nineteenth century. The range and depth of his photographic vision mark Thomson out as one of the most important travel photographers" (ODNB). Mixed issue, with the first two volumes identified on the title as the second edition, and the final two volumes being the first edition. Cf. An excellent idea of Charcot's work is gained by persual of his Lecons, dealing with teaching on nervous disorders. The Salpétrière offered Charcot a source of case material that was unique in the history of neurology. The present book is clinically oriented and deals with such topics as hemiplegia and spinal lesions, etc. cf. G.M. 4556; Hirsch-H. I, p.886 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1874 - 1874 Original Front Wrapper Incredibly Rare

1874. On offer here is an 1874 Wisden that has it's original front wrapper together with a facsimile spine and rear wrapper. After the 1875 and 1864 and perhaps the 1869, 1874 is the rarest of all Wisden and I think only one has been offered for sale on Wisden Auction before. This copy retains it's original front wrapper but as will be seen from the photograph it has areas of darkening and discolouration and the bottom right hand corner has been restored. The first few pages also have areas of discolouration but in my view these do not detract from the book itself. The discolouration lessens so that by the time you reach page 11 there is no trace. The remaining contents are complete, original and in very nice condition. The last page has the remains of a sellotape mark to it. The spine and facsimile rear cover have been very sympathetically done and are in fine condition. Overall this is a very presentable copy of a very rare book. If a prospective purchaser would prefer I could have the book rebound by Scriveners Bookbinders in Buxton, Derbyshire who do a fabulous job of rebinding Wisden in a variety leather and cloth bindings. Don't hesitate to ask for details.

Volume containing 10 titles demonstrating Walras's developing theories of economic equilibrium.]

Various places: Various publishers, 1874–91 - 10 works bound in 1 volume, octavo. Later green cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, yellow endpapers, edges uncut. Manuscript contents leaf pasted to front free endpaper verso in black and red ink plus several section division leaves in manuscript. Spine rolled, ends bumped with some short snags at head, extremities lightly rubbed, hinges gently cracked but firm, a few nicks to upper edge of first leaf, half-title a little loose, some pamphlets evenly browned, overall a very good volume. From the library of the Royal Statistical Society of London, with a label to front pastedown and their stamps occasionally to contents, with a few neat pencil annotations to the text. Manuscript list of contents in ink to front free endpaper verso. A collection of Walras's essays, including the first edition of Théorie de la monnaie and the first separate editions of his articles on bimetallism and price variation, from the years of his "second phase of theoretical activity, his period of high creativity and maximum theoretical prolificacy" (Walker, p. 9), when he was in the process of developing his initial comprehensive model of general equilibrium that would eventually appear in the first edition of Éléments, and his later period of maturity during the 1880s and 1890s, when he "significantly extended, refined, and altered his system, particularly in regard to capital, money, and equilibrating mechanisms, and composed numerous essays on applied and normative economics" (The New Palgrave IV, p. 854). Several of these articles, written after Walras's appointment as professor of political economy at the University of Lausanne in 1871, were first delivered to the Vaudois Society of National Science in Lausanne (and then printed in their Bulletin), and others were published in the Journal des Économistes as well as in publications of various other societies. This volume has a pertinent mathematical provenance, having been bound together for the Royal Statistical Society of London who, in the late 19th century, were acquiring material for their library which was deemed to have made a valuable contribution to statistical and economic science. A note at the foot of the manuscript list of contents erads "N.B. Nos 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, & 10 of the above form the book called Théorie mathématique de la richesse sociale." Bound up together are the following titles: a) Principe d'une théorie mathématique de l'échange. Mémoire lu à l'académie des sciences morales et politiques (Séances des 16 et 23 août 1873). Orléans: Ernest Colas, 1874. Pp. [5], 6–24, 1 folding plate. A bright, clean copy. Original offprint, separately paginated, first published in Paris by Alphonse Picard in January 1874 after Walras read the essay to the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences the previous year. Sraffa 6240; Walker 103. b) Équations de la capitalisation. Mémoire lu à la société vaudoise des sciences naturelles (Séance du 5 juillet 1876). Extrait du Bulletin de la Soc. Vaud. des Sciences naturelles. –2e S. Vol. XV. No 77. Lausanne: L. Corbaz et Comp., 1876. Pp. [4], 525–64. Contents evenly browned and a little brittle, a few chips to fore-edge of half-titleand a few other leaves. Original offprint, retaining the original pagination, with the erroneous title page statement (it actually appeared in volume XIV). There is some debate as to the date of the essay—the Bulletin article is dated a year later, 1877—and it is quite possible that the tirage à part was published before the essay's appearance in the journal. Lausanne: Allenspach fils, 1876. Pp. [2], 365–430 (separately paginated 1-66). A few nicks to upper leaf edges. Original offprint, retaining the original pagination and separate pagination,

[1860s-70s].. Oblong folio, measuring 33 x 45 cm. Contemporary brown half morocco over matching cloth boards, spine with raised bands, gilt rules. 52 original photographs mounted on card, mostly on rectos only, all captioned beneath the image in ink in the same early hand. 8 of the photographs, including a folding panorama, relate to Cape Town, the other 44 are of various Indian subjects - many topographical plus a few portraits. Some scuffing to the binding, occasional spotting, mostly to the mounts, very good overall. 22 of the Indian photos bear the blindstamp of the "Frith Series", another 12 are signed and numbered in the negative by Samuel Bourne. The first photo in the album "Parbutty [Parvati] near Poona" is most likely by Bourne's successor Colin Murray, but has also been attributed to Bourne by others. The subjects of the photos are mostly northern Indian - images in and around Lahore, Srinagar, Simla, Kullu and Delhi are featured as well as a particularly striking photograph of the Golden Temple of Amritsar. However, the album also ventures further south with images of Gwalior, Fatehpur Sikri, Lucknow and Varanasi plus the aforementioned photo of Pune and two photographs of Bombay (featuring the Harbour and the Town Hall). Four of the photographs are of people: an interesting shot of the "Inhabitants of Chumba" (Bourne 553), a "A Yâk Spiti" (Frith) plus two group shots of soldiers from Royal Horse Artillery dated 1874 and 1876. Of the R.H.A. photos the first show the sergeants of A & C Batteries, the second the "Chesnut [sic] Troop" (the alternate name of A Battery) in parade ground formation.

NEWTON'S PRINCIPIA, THE MATHEMATICAL PRINCIPLES OF NATURAL PHILOSOPHY, By SIR ISAAC NEWTON ; Translated into English By Andrew Motte. TO WHICH IS ADDED NEWTON'S SYSTEM OF THE WORLD ; With a Portrait Taken from the Bust in the Royal Observatory of Greenwich. First American Edition, Carefully Revised and Corrected, With a Life of the Author, By N. W. Chittenden, M. A. , & c

New York: Daniel Adee, 176 Fulton Street [1874]. Later printing. 4, v-vii, [1-blank], [9]-581 pages. 8vo. Original green cloth with salmon endpapers. Gilt titles and spine decoration head and tail.Fraying to head of spine panel, with top 1 3/4 inches of front joint cloth wearing through. Front hinge paper cracked. Rear hinge sound. A few signatures starting to come loose, partially separating from the stitching. Still a fundamentally sound copy noting a few dings to the board edges. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Sir Isaac Newton. Corner tips turned with minor wear, minor shelf wear overall.Previous owner's name on front pastedown endpaper. Cloth. Although the title page notes "First American Edition" and the copyright page is dated 1846, this is a later printing, published circa 1874 based on lack of portrait subscription or date, 176 Fulton Street address and lack of title page date (see Wallis & Wallis 27.2, Cohen #3). The First American edition was first published in 1848 (NOT 1846) and first editions are routinely mis-identified based on the copyright page information. The work was reprinted for many years from the same stereotype, issues differing only by date (or absence of date), publisher, publisher's address, and portrait subscription (or lack thereof). In 1970 scholar and historian I.B.Cohen in ''The American editions of Newton's Principia'' (Wallis 62.472) provided a much needed guide which updated Babson and Gray's work on this title.Cohen's work was updated by and subsequently incorporated into Wallis's "Newton and Newtoniana 1672-1975, A Bibliography" by Peter and Ruth Wallis (See 26, 27.2, 62.472). See also Babson 23; Gray 26 both referring to the first American Edition. As is often the case with American cloth bindings from this period, this work is hard to find in nice condition, and this example exhibits the usual wear to the binding. Good.
