1874 - (WYOMING). Wyoming (Territory). The Territory of Wyoming. Its History, Soil, Climate, Resources, etc. Laramie City: Daily Sentinel Print, Dec. 1874. 83, [1] p. Blue printed wrappers. A long diagonal tear in the lower corner of the title page has been neatly closed with a strip of cellophane tape on either side (touching one letter of type), spine ends a bit chipped, else a very good, clean copy, with the wrappers in lovely condition.         Autograph Letter Signed

Not published, Hawksfold, Fernhurst, Haslemere 1874 - One page letter entirely in the hand of and signed by English architect Anthony Salvin. Dated August 24th, 1874, it reads "Dear Sir, with reference to you inquiry about Cholmondeley Castle. I believe the additions were made from designs by Sir Robert Smirke. I am dear sir, yours truly [signed] A. Salvin." Smirke added towers for 2nd Marquess of Cholmondeley in 1829. Although written, it is unclear who Salvin is replying to in this letter. Included is an undated two-page manuscript note, quite possibly written by Salvin (it apears to be signed "Salvin" at end) in 1849; the difference of 25 years would explain the moderate difference in handwriting which shows much similarity. This note appears to be a dedication for the completion of St. Mary's, started 1842. This is a mock-Gothic chapel near Arley Hall in Cheshire and built for Rowland E. Egerton-Warburton (1804-1891). Included is a mid-19th century engraving of St. Mary's. Salvin came from a Durham family, and went to London, where he became a pupil of John Nash. He then started his own practice which lasted for some 60 years. He became an expert on medieval fortifications, building and/or altering over 73 country houses. He did much restoration work on many castles including Windsor Castle and the Jewel House at the Tower of London. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1836, became vice-president in 1839, and in 1863 the Institue conferred its gold medal on him. Autograph, Manuscript.         Fine programme of entertainment for the evening of the arrival of Tsar Alexander II and his entourage at Windsor, (1819-1901, Queen of Great Britain)]

1874 - the evening begins with the Overture, "Paradise and the Peri" by W. S. Bennett and continues with works by Meyerbeer, Glinka and Gounod and also has "The Galatea Waltz, H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh" and ends with "The Duchess of Edinburgh's March" by Cusins, 1 side 8vo., wonderfully decorated with the embossed British and the Imperial crests hand coloured in gold, blue, black and red, Windsor Castle, 13th May Tsar Alexander II's State Visit to Windsor in 1874 was a massive event and the Tsar came with an entourage of 70, including four cooks. He was due to step from his royal yacht at precisely 11.30am on May 13th at Gravesend. Thousands were waiting to watch the arrival, but instead they were told that His Imperial Majesty's yacht had run aground off Holland and could not be moved until high tide. The Tsar had to divert to Dover for a hastily arranged welcome and a dash by train to Windsor. Queen Victoria was warned by telegram. "What a contretemps!" she noted in her diary. "We only sat down to dinner, in fact supper, at quarter to 11." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Marine Mammals of the North-Western Coast of North America, described and illustrated; . with an account of the American Whale-Fishery.

      - San Francisco, John H. Carmany 1874. Quarto contemporary half morocco; 320,vpp, 27 litho plates (6 folding, these mounted on linen at the time of binding), illustrations through the text. Ex parliamentary library with their gilt crest on the front boards and incorporated into the spine, not marked inside; foxing but a handsome copy. A handsome book, in its way a sophistication of a cave painter's delineation of his prey. Here Scammon - a whale and seal hunter - has turned naturalist, creating a modern scientific and historical monument with such care that a few of the illustrations show an almost transcendental love of what is, or soon will be, a product. At the end is a whaling vocabulary and an inventory of stores for a first-class whale-ship for a Cape Horn voyage. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Enchanting series of Illustrated Letters to William Miller ORD, M.D., (Watts, 1825-1874, Illustrator, Playwright and Novelist, best known for his play 'The Dead Heart' which served as a model for Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities.)

1874 - (1834-1902, Medical Scientist and Physician, for fifty years at St Thomas's Hospital, London), to Ord's second wife Jane, (née Youl), the Ords's daughter Christine and dog Tartar, with one or two by Caroline (Huskisson), known as Mrs Phillips, also humorous drawings and a title leaf for "Jane Ord's Album", the letters are full of energy, puns and literary allusions, nearly all with one or more extremely skilful and witty pen-drawings. Besides Phillips's own troubles, for Ord's care of which he is extremely grateful, Phillips refers to invitations to the Ords's home in Streatham, imagines their holidays in Northumberland and Swanage, adding his reminiscences of both districts, and talks of the pressure of keeping up his writing (see No. 38, showing him chained to an inkpot like Prometheus to his rock), with much more. With a Checklist. Together 58 items on 99 sides (including 4½ sides by Mrs Caroline Phillips), mostly 8vo, 45 Redcliffe Road (off the Fulham Road), West Brompton, London, 16th January - 31st December 1873 and circa February - April Watts Phillips began as an actor. He was then apprenticed to George Cruikshank (1792-1878), his lifelong friend, and who here comes to breakfast (see Nos. 8 and 10). Phillips studied art in Paris, and returned to work there, mainly as an illustrator. Separated from his wife, he met Caroline Huskisson, who became known as 'Mrs Phillips'. In a curious incident, it was claimed that Phillips's play The Dead Heart plagiarized A Tale of Two Cities, but it was proved that Dickens had been at a reading of the play in manuscript. (They were reconciled in 1865). In 1866 Phillips and Caroline returned to England. Of their four children, (May) Roland Watts-Phillips became an actress. Dr William Ord, besides St Thomas's, had consulting rooms at 11 Brook Street, off New Bond Street (see Nos. 23 and 41). He became eminent from his lectures and as an authority on thyroid. There are many references here to his skill with the microscope and his passion for collecting fossils and plants. He, Jane Ord and Caroline took Phillips's adoration of Jane in good part and the families were good friends. CHECKLIST (Letters are from Watts Phillips to Dr William Ord, unless stated otherwise) DATED (some approximately) 1. 16th January 1873. Self-portrait at work, seated on an egg, whisky on the table.         LADY ANNA

1874. A Novel. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1874. 4 pp preliminary ads + 2 pp terminal ads, undated. Original orange-brown paper wrappers. First American Edition, issued as No. 411 in Harper's "Library of Select Novels." Trollope wrote this tale in 1871, during the two-month passage from Liverpool to Melbourne (where the Trollopes' son was marrying); he began on the first day at sea, and every day (except one when he was sick) he wrote precisely 66 pages of manuscript, each page consisting of precisely 250 words. Although Sadleir indicates that both the UK edition and this US edition were published in May 1874, Smith states that the UK edition was published on March 28, 1874, followed by this edition on May 20th. (The fact that the rear cover bears the date March 1874 has led some to claim that this American edition was earlier than the UK edition; in any case, both were preceded by Tauchnitz's edition in December 1873.)~LADY ANNA was published by Harper only in these wrappers -- not in cloth as well. This copy is in the earliest state, with the list of Library titles ending with No. 406. Condition is near-fine, with scarcely any wear other than the fact that, as if often the case with these wrappered volumes, the spine is askew or "rolled." This is a scarce edition. Smith (Trollope) pp 181-185 (this very copy); also see Sadleir (Trollope) 42. Provenance: signature "R.S. Lee" at the top of the front cover, penciled signature of bibliographer Walter E. Smith at the top of the title page.
