A Brief Statement of Facts in Connection with an Overland Expedition from Lake George to Port Phillip in 1824

Yass: J. J. Brown, 1874. Octavo, small water-stain to lower margin of the frontispiece, front hinge tender, good in original stiff green cloth wrappers with original paper label, Mackaness bookplate. A scarce title in entirely original condition, being the third edition of Hamilton Hume's account of his now famous pioneering journey of discovery overland to Port Phillip. The preface details the poisonous exchanges between Hume and his companion William Hovell over several decades, with both men charging each other with rank incompetence. To bolster his claims, Hume published a range of letters in the preface from travelling companions in addition to letters of assurance from other leading figures in the inland exploration of Australia including Charles Sturt and Sir Thomas Mitchell.

Artist's Sketchbook of Pacific drawings , made during his exile to New Caledonia in 1874-1877

at sea and in New Caledonia: 1874-, 1877. Oblong portfolio of beige (sail?) cloth, 160 x 235 mm., pencil illustrations throughout, some on grey paper (see catalogue note), pen and ink drawing on card tipped-on to front paste-down as impromptu book-plate; the pictures generally in very good condition, the binding with evidence of strong use, some stains and a few small tears. New Caledonia as drawn by a French artist. Interesting and lively portfolio of original drawings made during exile in New Caledonia, by a renowned French artist and winner of the Prix de Rome. Several of the finer drawings depict life on board the Virginie, the ship on which he was deported, and there are besides several very good sketches of New Caledonian scenes; without doubt the most interesting showing a boisterous tribal dance. Charles Capellaro (1826-1899) was a well-regarded French sculptor who regularly exhibited at the Salon during the 1860s. A prominent member of the 1871 Paris Commune, Capellaro was lucky to escape the death penalty in the Commune's bloody aftermath, and on 13 May 1872 was condemned to be deported to the Île des Pins in New Caledonia. Intriguingly, however, in 1870 he had been awarded the commission for a statue for the façade of Saint Eustache church, and he continued to work on the commission even after his imprisonment. Indeed, his deportation in 1874 seems to have been actively delayed while he continued to work, and that year he even managed to have another statue exhibited in the Salon. He was, Sánchez has written, a peculiar anomaly, 'an artist producing state-sponsored work from prison' (Gonzalo J. Sánchez, Organizing Independence: the artists federation of the Paris Commune, p. 128). However, his sentence finally caught up with him, and Capellaro arrived on the Île des Pins in late 1874, already agitating for his freedom. Fellow artists in Paris did not forget him , and due to their efforts in 1877 his sentence was commuted to ten-years banishment. He returned to Brussels, finagled a three-month visa for Paris, and returned home. During his three years in New Caledonia, Capellaro was unable to sculpt on a grand scale, although he did continue to draw (several of his drawings are now in the Musée du Quay Branly) and he did sculpt with the cruder materials available, including executing a clay head of Samuel, King of the Isle of Pines (now in the State Library of New South Wales). A card (75 x 115 mm.) mounted on the inside cover introduces the album, with a caption which reads 'à bord de la Virginie, le 12 octobre 1874', and a small cartouche dedicating the work to his wife, children, and friends, signed C. Capellaro. Otherwise the portfolio contains six detailed drawings of life on board ship, including one of four matelots clustered around the wheel with, at right, an artist sketching - perhaps meant to be Capellaro himself. Another dramatic image shows the three-masted vessel pitching in a fierce storm. There are also seven drawings dealing with Polynesia, made in black and white pencil (the whites in so-called "mine de plomb"). This series includes several views of ports taken from on board including one three-page panorama (sadly not captioned, but perhaps detailed enough to make identification possible), as well as scenes of a Melanesian dance evidently witnessed by Capellaro, and an idealised portrait of a topless woman under a palm. Lastly, there are also some 20 sheets of drawings on different subjects, and it seems likely that Capellaro drew these pictures after he had returned home. The drawings show portraits of European people, classical images, studies of sculptures and a chasseur d'Afrique. One, a study of a monumental sculpture on tissue-paper, is signed "C. Capellaro

Autograph Letter Signed, in German, 8vo., Giessen, 25th April 1850 laid down on conjugate blank.

      - Liebig at Giessen pioneered the use of chemical laboratories for students, as opposed to mere lectures, and his pupils came from all over Europe. He made fundamental advances in inorganic and organic chemistry, particularly descriptions in terms of radicals. He then turned to applied human and animal chemistry, then agriculture, which he considered the foundation of all trade and industry, and to fertilizers. He is also famous for his food for children and for LiebigÕs Ôextract of meatÕ. Graham is famous for his law on the rate of diffusion of gases. Gladstone became Professor at the Royal Institution in 1874. To Dr. John Hall Gladstone, F.R.S., (1827-1902, English chemist), saying that he has ñjust got back from a trip that took me away from Giessen for several weeks, thanking him for his letter of April 18 and your paper about the behaviou of sulphur when added to PCl 5. This will be recorded in one of the next issues of the Annals. The news that you have been able to confirm the chlorine, phosphorus and nitrogen compound, thus obtaining a new tri-basic acid, was of enormous interest to me.As my health is now so much better, the course of lectures I am giving this summer no longer causes me any anxiety. Please give my respects to Prof. Graham [Thomas Graham, 1805-1869, Professor of Chemistry at University College, London, 1837-1855], he is certainly in the best position for giving you the means to determine small amounts of light carburetted hydrogen.î These last three words are written in English. Signed, Dr. Just Liebig.

        Quartorze Ans aux Iles Sandwich

Libraire Hachette & Cie., Paris 1874 - Two parts in one volume, two folding engraved maps; original yellow wrappers bound in, three quarter green morocco, light foxing but a very good copy. First edition of the account by Charles Victor Crosnier de Varigny (1829 1899) on the years he spent on the Hawaiian Archipel. De Varigny writes about the history of Hawaii. In the second part of the present work he elaborates on the recent history, extended with his own experiences in politics. Because De Varigny had been a minister in the Hawaiian government for several years he had access to the state archives, an important source for his account. For example, in the first chapter De Varigny narrates of the famous voyage of Captain James Cook to the isle of Hawaii, where the well-known sailor died in 1779. De Varigny gives an example here of a native Hawaiian legend on this event. He prefers this version to the English account by Ledyard, as being more authentic and original. Paul Markham Kahn Collection (State-Archives of Hawaii) 4/157; not in Hill. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Cordier, Sinica, col. 123; Numa Broc pp. 205-8. Original edition of this offprint of an article on Central China that appeared in January 1874 in the Bulletin de la Société de Géographie by Francis Garnier (1839-1873), a French explorer and diplomat. He decided in 1872 to travel to the high plateaus of central Asia by way of the valley of the Yang-Tse river. After a short stay at Beijing, where he and the other members of the expedition had to apply for passports, they went to Wuhan, at the head of the river, where consul Blancheton advised them to take a more southern route, through the provinces of Hunan and Guizhou. When they reached the Tong-Ting lake, however, Garnier decided to travel by way of the river Yuan-Kiang, because this area wasn't known yet by the European geographers. After that they took the river Wou-Kiang and traveled further to the East, to the city of Tchoung-King in the middle of the Red Basin. In August 1873, Garnier received a telegram in which he was summoned to return to Shanghai as quickly as possible to take part in a war going on. He died during a fight close to Hanoi in December of the same year. Only a month later his accounts appeared in the Bulletin. With a large folding map of central China (26 x 58 cm), 'réduction de la carte originale par J. Hansen', printed in red and black, and several full-page tables. Some foxing; small tear in map; good, uncut copy of an account of a voyage in Central China, containing information on Chinese regions, which had been unknown for earlier European geographers.

ILLUSTRATIONS OF BRITISH HAWK MOTHS, AND THEIR LARVAE, (Including the Sesidae.) With Thirty-Six Original Drawings by the Author from Specimens in His Cabinet

London: Published by the Author , 1874. London: Published by the Author . Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 1874. First Edition. Hardcover. Sm 4to Signed by Author A very good copy of a rare and beautiful book by one of the most idiosyncratic natural history publishers of the nineteenth century, where the plates are fine original illustrations, by the author and publisher Theophilus Johnson. 1874-[1876]. Small 4to 170 x 229mm [leaf size 160 x 220mm]; 36 fine original watercolour drawings on card; pp. [4 - blanks], 4, [3]-46 pages of letterpress text [but paginated to the printed side of the leaf only], original brown-coated end-papers. Each plate depicts a different hawkmoth species along with its foodplant, with additional plates for the larger moths showing the larva and pupa. Contemporary pebbled green cloth binding with the binder's ticket to the rear end paper "Bound by H. Pearman, Printer and Bookseller, 62 High Street, DARTFORD." Signed in pencil "Theod Johnson" to the verso of the front free end-paper - possibly the author's copy (see notes). The contents are remarkably clean with minimal marking. Binding very good with a couple of inconspicuous repairs to the joints; internal stitching remains strong, but a number of the pages have opened up where the binding glue has failed, and while this could easily be repaired, we have not done so as it allows the plates to open flat. A very good copy. [Bibligraphic Notes: Theophilus Johnson was born in Tottenham in 1836 and trained to be a letterpress printer. He lived most of this life near London Zoo and moved to Dartford Heath in Kent at the turn of the century and died there in 1919. His output as a naturalist, artist and publisher was immense, though many of his works remain obscure and are little known. Some were specifically commissioned and consequently just a single copy may have been produced. All his works are illustrated with original watercolour paintings; a prodigious achievement, which ensured that every copy published was unique. It would seem that his earlier works were generally painted to a higher standard than his later works, though copies of the same work vary in quality and certainly in specification; for instance in the current work plates 3 and 4 are on separate leaves but copies exist with these two plates on one leaf; the position of the Death's Head Hawk Moth on plate VI varies - either facing left or right; and so on. David Dunbar writes "Johnson produced a confusing range of titles which often covered broadly the same ground…He had a habit of using precisely the same printed text in similar publications produced up to thirty years later. He also varied the number of plates, and the ways species were illustrated in individual copies of the same work, changing the position or number of figures shown and even the caterpillar food plants." It would seem that the existing work was published with variant titles - some including the words "with the plants on which they feed"; auction records also point to a The quality of the painting in our copy is outstandingly good with plate X featuring particularly delicate pencil work. A copy, offered in Wheldon & Wesley's catalogue No. 132 in 1975, included a cutting from a previous bookseller's catalogue that stated "only 25 copies executed" though this remains unverified.         NORFOLK ISLAND: Autograph Letter Signed, 'George H. Nobbs,' to the Right Reverend Christopher Wordsworth, Bishop of Lincoln, asking for an Annotated Copy of the Scriptures "for the Use of the Congregation¿ and as an Heir-loom for the Descendants of the Community", Explaining that they are Converting a Former Convict Store into a Church, and Describing the Origin of the Community on Pitcairn Island].

Norfolk Island, South Pacific Ocean 1874 - Norfolk Island, South Pacific Ocean, 30 December 1874. Large Octavo (ca. 25x20 cm). 2 pp., with an integral blank leaf. Brown ink on watermarked laid paper. Legible handwriting, but with some moderate water damage probably incurred in the mails, one edge ragged, other minor defects. Overall a good letter. A great letter and an important Norfolk Island relic, despite the water staining. George Hunn Nobbs, the pastor of the descendants of the HMS Bounty mutineers, by that time for over forty years, is writing to his superior, the Bishop of Lincoln, with the latest news from his "isolated, but happy home." He asks His Lordship to grant the community with a copy of the Bible and proceeds: "The people I represent are the descendants of the Mutineers of H.M.S. Bounty - and formerly dwelling on Pitcairn Island, but now, by favour of our Gracious Queen, and philanthropy of influential Friends in England¿ in possession of the large portion of Norfolk Island." He also refers to the Melanesian Mission, with whom the island was shared in an uneasy partnership, and describes the destruction of the old church in a cyclone, and the whaling boats being washed away by a tidal wave, but "we are now recovering from this elemental war, & hope to have our new Church ready for public Worship by Easter next. The consecration must, of course, be deferred until a Successor to our honoured and beloved Friend Bishop Patterson is appointed." He expresses his readiness to provide further information about the community, "should Your Lordship be desirous", and additionally asks for the bishop's "autograph on the "Fly Leaf" with a word or two of paternal salutation to the community." George Hunn Nobbs arrived on Pitcairn Island in 1828 and became the schoolmaster and an unordained pastor to a community descended from HMS Bounty mutineers and Tahitian islanders. On 18 October 1829 Nobbs married Sarah Christian, the granddaughter of Fletcher Christian, who had let the mutiny. In 1852 he was ordained in London and commissioned as Chaplain of Pitcairn Island. In 1856 the community moved to Norfolk Island, a Crown Colony previously occupied by convict prisoners.

        The Life of Christ

London, Paris and New York - Cassell, Petter and Galpin, 1874. London, Paris and New York - Cassell, Petter and Galpin, 1874 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An earlyillustrated edition of Farrar's The Life of Christ with a colour map to frontispiece andoriginal black and white illustrations and embellishments throughout. Frederic William Farrar (1831 - 1903) was a cleric of the Church of England. Farrar's religious writings included Life of Christ (1874), which had great popularity, and Life of St. Paul (1879). His works were translated into many languages, especially Life of Christ. Farrar was a believer in universal reconciliation and thought that all people would eventually be saved, a view he promoted in a series of 1877 sermons. He originated the term abominable fancy for the long standing Christian idea that the eternal punishment of the damned would entertain the saved. Farrar published Eternal Hope in 1878 and Mercy and Judgement in 1881, both of which defend Christian universalism at length. Condition: In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, sound but with wear to extremities and occasional marks and rubbing to boards. Joints starting very slightly and front hinge strained. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with occasional slight foxing and marks to pages. Overall: GOOD.

Original Hand-Colored Lithograph, â??St. Patrickâ??s Day in Americaâ?

New York: Thomas Kelly, 1874 New York: Thomas Kelly, 1874. Approximately 26 x 20â?; contemporarily framed and glazed, overall approximately 25 x 30â?; the frame is wood with an inner moulding in gilt (some scrapes and wear): the print has minor staining and light browning where it had been backed by wood. We have found few examples of this print, but it was apparently available as a black and white lithograph, or, such as this one, hand-colored. The complex scene portrays the parade in Union Square in Manhattan, depicting floats, marching soldiers, and mounted officers on their way past a reviewing stand. Police officers line the crowded route and a streetcar is stopped to allow the procession to continue. The floats carry banners and a bust of Daniel Oâ??Connell; American and Irish (harp) flags fly along the route and atop buildings. The traditional New York parade had begun 25 years or so earlier, but this appears to be one of its earliest illustrations.
