Wagner, Richard; Forman, Alfred W (trans); Morris, William (his copy)
Privately Printed, 1873. 61pp. William Morris's personal copy of Richard Wagner's Die Walkurie, translated by Alfred W. Forman (the first English-language edition). Privately printed 1873. Presented to William Morris by HARRY BUXTON FORMAN, the translator's brother, ink inscription being on the front free endpaper. Morris wrote to Forman thanking him for the book (Collected Letters of William Morris, Vol 1, No. 216). Condition: Generally Very Good but with dust soiling and shelfwear to covers. **** Henry Buxton Forman (1842-1917) was one-half of the most notorious British book forging partnerships in modern times, with Thomas J. Wise. The relationship between Harry Buxton Forman and William Morris is a fascinating yet convoluted tale. Forman was a career bureaucrat with the Royal Mail, rising from a lowly clerk to being responsible for negotiating international agreements on packet service across international postal borders. He is also described as a failed poet, an obsessive collector of books and bibliographic detail, which he parlayed into a second career as a contributor of literary criticism and editorial incisiveness upon some of the big-name authors of the day such as John Keats and Percey Shelley. His articles for Tinsley's Magazine, entitled "Our Living Poets" brought him to the notice of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and others of the Pre-Raphaelite circle whom he had written about. Forman did have a legitimate working relationship with Morris, as described by biographer John Collins in his book, The Two Forgers (1992): "William Morris was clearly a specialty, as Swineb … [Click Below for Full Description]

May 4, 1873. Autograph Letter Signed “C.G. Gordon,” two pages, 5” x 8”, front & verso. Galatz [Romania], May 4, 1873. To Bailey. Lightly soiled. Fine condition.

In full, “I was very sorry to hear of the illness of Capt Cockcroft who has been very kind to my brothers widow at Bedford. I hope sincerely that he is restored again to health. I hope Mrs Bailey is not the worse for her nursing, how wearisome this is, when you hear of some one being ill, how much is composed in the remark, the hopes and fears & long weary nights of watching. Oh, I hope it may not come on me like that. I would like one minute not more and no nursing at all. I hope it will come so to me, depend on it my dear Bailey. God is working out a problem of love, the fleshy corrupt nature leaves us at the grave & we slough it off as it were. every night you undress is a symbol of your death, you put off your clothes and enter into piece for the most part, and so it will be with death. We out off our shrouds which bear us down and which cannot enter the true rest. Thanks for the tracing of Bender it will do just first rate I have received the maps of the Caucasus & paid Williams & Noregate for them. MacDougal wrote to me, he likes you & Wilson. he is a nice fellow. Kind regards to Mrs Bailey & deeply sympathizing with you both.”

In October 1871, Charles G. GAUTIER, Théophile;
[Click Below for Full Description]

Hindley, Charles (Editor).
Reeves and Turner, 1873. 1st Ed. 2 vols. xxviii + iv + [ii] + 492pp. Frontis. to vol. 1., numerous ills. Some light browning, enthusiastically rebound in modern black morocco backed pigskin boards, dec. gilt spines. In 1847 John Payne Collier (1789–1883) printed "A Book of Roxburghe Ballads". It consisted of 1,341 broadside ballads from the seventeenth century, mainly English, originally collected by Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford and Mortimer (1661–1724), and later collected by John Ker, 3rd Duke of Roxburghe. Collier also interpolated his own forgeries. He used ancient paper and wrote on the pages with a rare ink which has proved to be very enduring. Whilst not as famous as the Child Ballads or Percy's Reliques, important, nevertheless. US$382 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
