John Gould
London 1873 - This splendid hand-colored, folio-size lithograph, Uria Grylle, from John Gould’s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds of Great Britain" is in very good condition with light foxing and staining in the margins, measures 14.75" x 21.5", and magnificently displays the author’s scientific skill and attention to detail. Commonly called Black Guillemots or Tysties, these medium-sized alcids are illustrated, the adult having an all black body with a white patch flanking the wings and the juvenile with spotted patterns on its plumage. John Gould was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. His wife Elizabeth and other artists were able to transfer his sketches to stone; hand print and hand-color them. Gould was especially proud of this sumptuous work “Birds of Great Britain” (1862-1873) describing … [Click Below for Full Description]

Liszt, Franz, composer and pianist (1811-1886).
Pest, 14. XII. 1873.

Scudamore, Frank Ives
1873. Scudamore, Frank Ives (1823-84). A.L.s. to Latimer Clark. N.p., May 12, 1873. 2pp. 186 x 115 mm. A few finger-marks. Provenance: Latimer Clark.Scudamore went to work for the British Post Office in 1841, and by 1856 had risen to the post of receiver and accountant general in that organization. In 1865 he wrote a report recommending that the British government assume control of Britain's telegraph lines, which were then privately owned and closely associated with various British railroad companies. During the next few years Scudamore played a crucial role in negotiations leading to the passage of two important parliamentary acts: the first of these, ratified in 1868, empowered the state to take over all the telegraph systems in the country, and the second, enacted in 1869, gave the British Post Office a monopoly over telegraphic communication.Scudamore's letter to Clark reads as follows:"I am very much obliged to you for sending me the enclosed votes but I am happy to tell you that my candidate was admitted at the last election. I would have sent the paper direct to Lady Suffolk, but it requires your signature before it can be used, and it would therefore have to be returned to you in any case." Origins of Cyberspace 194.

Eliot, George
1873. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1873. 2 prelininary pp undated ads, plus 4+4 pp terminal ads (the former headed "Autumn Book-List," the latter listing this as one of the "New Books"). Original green cloth. Second American Edition -- barely -- of George Eliot's best-known book, and what is today regarded as one of the greatest literary accomplishments of the 19th Century. The novel first appeared in eight wrappered five-shilling parts in England, one issued every two months beginning on 1 Dec 1871 and ending on 2 Dec 1872 (the last two were sped up) -- soon after which (early December) the novel was also available in four cloth-bound volumes. Meanwhile in America, Harper was serializing MIDDLEMARCH in Harper's Weekly, from Dec 16 1871 through Feb. 15 1873. The week of Dec 28 1872, Harper published the novel in two volumes (I dated 1872 and II dated 1873), as Vols VI and VII of their "Novels of George Eliot." Very soon thereafter (days? -- Baker & Ross does not specify a date), Harper also published the novel in one volume, in the standard two-column format of their "Library of Select Novels" -- bound either in paper wrappers or, as here, in any of three colors of cloth (including this green).~B&R cites two states of the terminal ad leaves: "Spring Book-List" listing Select Novels through No. 391, and "Summer Book-List" listing through No. 395; this copy represents a third state, "Autumn Book-List" with the list ending at No. 400. Condition is just about fine. The American MIDDLEMARCH -- either of these Harper editions -- is curiously scarce, especially in fine condition. … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Illustrazione Italiana - Volume rilegato, Treves Editore. [Click Below for Full Description]
