I can only find one page with pencil writing in margin and at top of page - see photo. Bookstore stamp and prior owner name on endpapers. All other pages clean. Scarce Thomas Cooley Edition of Joseph Story's Commentaries on the Constitution. 2 volumes. "Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States: With a Preliminary Review of the Constitutional History of the Colonies and States Before the Adoption of the Constitution. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1873." Fourth edition. Commentaries on the Constitution was the most extensive and widely discussed study of the Constitution written during the antebellum period. Looks to be the original binding. Approximately 6-1/2" x 9-1/2". Volume 1: 752 pages; Volume 2: 737 pages. Please see the Google Books screenshot in photos from a page of "Publications of the Arkansas Historical Association, 1906" - it describes the acquisition of various official and unofficial papers by "L. C. Gulley." You will see the signature "L. C. Gulley" in Volume 1 of the book offered for sale here. I think it is safe to assume that these Commentaries on the Constitution were part of the "car load" acquired by Gulley described in that screenshot. MUYBRIDGE, Eadweard James (1830-1904)
San Francisco: Bradley & Rulofson, 1873. Mammoth plate albumen photograph, mounted onto the photographer's lettered card mount. Image size: 17 x 21 1/2 inches. Sheet size: 24 3/8 x 29 1/2 inches. Rare mammoth-plate photograph of Yosemite by Muybridge."Muybridge was justifiably celebrated as a landcape photographer for his series of mammoth-plate Yosemite views made [between June and December] in 1872 and offered for sale by Bradley and Rulofson in 1873. These fifty one ambitious photographs were made in direct competition with C.E. Watkins's equally acclaimed views of 1861-1866." Muybridge's 1872 Yosemite photographs were "his most significant and last extensive body of landscape photographs. Drama was the foremost quality in Muybridge's esthetic, and he continued to place heavy emphasis on unique points of view to achieve dramatic intensity" (Naef). As an artist, Muybridge is acclaimed not only for his compositions, but also his deliberate choice of points of view, which were often contrary with the realities of the difficult terrain.Comparisons between the Yosemite photographs of Muybridge and Watkins, both today and even at the time, are and were inevitable. They are perhaps summed up best by Naef, who describes the two photographers "as different as romanticism and classicism" and elsewhere as "painterly" (Muybridge) versus "sharp focus precision" (Watkins).Muybridge announced his intentions in a May 1872 prospectus which sought financial support for the Yosemite project prior to his expedition: "I am encouranged in this undertaking from the generally expressed opinio … [Click Below for Full Description]

[FENG-SHUI] EITEL, Ernest J.
Hong Kong: Lane, Crawford & Co, 1873. First Edition. Paperback. A foundational work for western readers, written by a German Protestant missionary, on the Chinese philosophy of Feng-Shui. Though by no means fully embracing its principles (Eitel has in fact been criticized for his somewhat dismissive attitute towards Chinese science and religion - not entirely surprising, given his mission), Eitel's appears to have been the earliest serious account of Feng-Shui for a western audience. The original owner, one Henry Liddell, is likely not the celebrated classicist, vice-chancellor of Oxford, and father of Alice (we find no evidence, at least, of this Liddell's having ever visited Shanghai). Another Henry Liddell, a medical doctor and missionary who published popular articles on Chinese culture for British and American magazines, appears the more likely candidate. A fragile publication, quite uncommon in commerce, this is a well-preserved copy notwithstanding the later cloth-tape reinforcement to spine. Octavo. Original printed paper wrappers with later red cloth spine reinforcement; 84pp; errata slip bound in at rear. Slight aging to wrappers, with repaired vertical tear and chipping to wrapper edges; text clean, tight and unmarked. Contemporary ownership signature of a Henry Liddell, Shanghai, at upper portion of front cover; later ownership signature in pencil of A. Van Vleck.

[RAMÍREZ Y FITA, Cayetano?].
Biblioteca de ex-coronel Pineda, vol. II (1873), p. 158; Dueñas de Anhalzer, "Marqueses, cacaoteros, y vecinos de Portoviejo", p. 289; WorldCat (2 copies); not in Medina; Palau; Sabin. Very rare pamphlet, printed in Lima, proclaiming the decision of the Canton of Portoviejo (in modern Ecuador) to join the Republic of Greater Colombia. The text was presumably written by the priest and revolutionary Cayetano Ramírez y Fita (1776-1854) and adapted in December 1821. Since the text was printed in Lima and refutations of the text appeared in a Guayaquil newspaper between May and June 1822, it is likely that the pamphlet appeared at the beginning of 1822.As part of the Spanish colonies in South-America, Portoviejo had been an important centre for conquistadors. In October 1820, as the Spanish empire in South-America was disintegrating, Portoviejo joined the other cities in the region of Guayaquil in declaring independence. The future of the region was uncertain as president Simón Bolívar of Colombia considered the region to be part of his state, while a number of movements in Guayaquil advocated joining the Republic of Peru. Portoviejo opposed to the rest of Guayaquil when in December 1821 its "cabildo" (administrative council) declared the canton to be part of the Republic of Colombia. Bolivár annexed the rest of the Province of Guayaquil in July 1822.With library stamps. Some small waterstains in the inner margins and a large waterstain at the head. Some small tears and folds near the edges and the title-page and last pages somewhat soiled; otherwise in good condition, edges unt … [Click Below for Full Description]

K. edition and the first edition in English. First issue. Binding a little tired and rubbed; inner joints repaired; small tears at heel; internally clean without foxing. DARWIN, Charles.
London: John Murray, 1873. London: John Murray,, 1873. Or the Preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life. Sixth edition, with additions and corrections (thirteenth thousand). Octavo. Original green ribbed-grain cloth, gilt titles to spine, frames and central vignette blocked in blind to covers, brown coated endpapers. Folding diagram facing p. 93. With a contemporary Queen's Prize certificate from the Science and Art Department tipped in after half title. Spine gently rolled with minor creasing to ends, a touch of wear to very tips, a couple of small blue ink marks to covers, top edge lightly soiled, front hinge cracked but holding, rear hinge just starting, faint foxing to tipped-in certificate and fore edge; a very good, unusually bright copy. Sixth edition, fourth issue, marked, like the third issue of 1872, as the "thirteenth thousand" on the title page. The sixth edition is the last lifetime edition. Darwin continually made revisions to his text; this sixth edition subsequently featured a new chapter, chapter VII, as well as a glossary by W. S. Dallas. "The edition was aimed at a wider public and printed in smaller type... giving the general impression of a cheap edition, which at 7s. 6d, it was". It is also the first edition of The Origin of Species to feature the word "evolution"; the term was first used by Darwin in The Descent of Man, published in 1871. The edition was reprinted unchanged from stereos in 1872 and again, in the present issue, in 1873. BAGEHOT, Walter.
London: Henry S. King & Co., 1873. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and boards lettered and ruled in gilt and black, dark green endpapers. Ex-library copy, with deaccessioned label and stamp to front pastedown and title leaf verso respectively, binder's ticket to rear pastedown. Extremities rubbed, spine ends and corners bumped, a few marks to boards and a tiny spot of loss to lower spine joint, the occasional mark to contents and one chip to top edge of advertisement leaf, overall a very good copy. First edition, inscribed "from the author" in Bagehot's hand on the title page, with the contemporary ownership signature of London barrister David Mitchell Aird adjacent and with Aird's address at 3 Pump Court, Temple, to the facing blank in ink. A member of the Middle Temple, Aird published an abridgment of Blackstone's Commentaries, Blackstone economized, also in 1873, followed by a number of works on civil laws in France and the French language. Scarce in commerce and described by J. M. Keynes as "an undying classic", Lombard Street analyses the operation of the British financial system, focusing on the economic role of the Bank of England. Bagehot's recommendation that the Bank alter gold reserves based on economic cycles was highly influential, and the book was considered authoritative into the 20th century. "The wonderful clearness of Bagehot's power of statement, his exact knowledge of the subject treated on, together with his firm grasp of economic theory, have caused this volume to exert an influence which few books on a subject naturally so dry have possessed" (Pal … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jagor as the most detailed observer who did the most valuable work amongst all French, English & German travelers, scientists, merchants & soldiers, who reported on the life & customs of these islands, from 1775 till 1860 ", as the American historian James A. Leroy commented on this publication of the German ethnographer in 1901. F. Jagor (1816 - 1900) was known as a perfectionist, unable to accept unfinished work which he would rather not deliver to his publisher. Musée Provincial (Archéologique) d'Arlon). 143 lithographed plates and 2 lithographed plans of Arlon: 1 large folding plan (54x49 cm) and 1 double page plan. Among the plates 7 double-page plates and 1 large folding plate (54x32 cm). The first series of plates are numberd 1-70, 72-94 and 25a,25b, 27a, 27b, 79a,79b. The second series is not numbered but only refers to the text. So, it is hard to find out if the Atlas is complete. Bertrang in his 'Histoire d'Arlon, 1940', indicates "un atlas avec 138 planches". The University at Ghent has a copy of the atlas with the same content as our copy: 1-70,72-94, etc. Probably plate 70 has to be plate 70-71 (double-page plate). - A rare, monumental, work and a spotless copy . Original rust pimple-grained cloth over bevelled boards, title gilt to the spine together with gilt dhow device, block of HMS Daphne in pursuit of a slaver to the front board, plain and cable-twist rules in black to spine and front board, in blind to the rear. Frontispiece and 15 other plates, vignettes to the text, folding map with colour. Neatly rebacked with majority of the original spine laid down, endpapers renewed, foxing front and back as usual, the majority of the text-block clean and sound. Third edition, perhaps more properly the third impression, the same year as the first. Important personal account of naval service in the suppression of slave trade; "Just as Sulivan received no honours for his service in East African waters, so the East African slave trade itself is now little known and the part played in its suppression by Sulivan and others like him almost totally unremembered. His role in this unsung war, as a naval officer who served on the coast for three tours of duty, is in itself unusual, but even more was his passionate hostility to the slavers which … was a valuable contribution to the growing forces of opposition being mustered in England. Most important of all was his own book, 'Dhow Chasing in Zanzibar Waters', which helped to form public opinion in his own time and in his lasting legacy to posterity" (Collister, The Sulivans and the Slave Trade). New York: Thomas O'Kane, Publisher, 1873. [5], 22-80 pp, as issued. Stitched in original printed purple wrappers, with portrait of the victim on front wrapper and illustration of the murder on the rear wrapper. The imprint is from the wrapper. Full-page engravings of Mansfield, Frank, the murder ["He closed upon me rapidly. His grasp was upon me when I fired the last time"], the delivery of the gun to the police ["That is the pistol I shot him with"]. Sketch of the crime scene at page 27. Light wear, Very Good. "This was the case of a youth who shot his father in a New York hotel because of alleged ill-treatment of his mother" [McDade]. The publisher's prefatory 'Advertisement' is apparently unmoved by this justification: the pamphlet is "the melancholy story of a young man, not yet twenty years of age, coolly shooting his father." His crime is one of those "deeds that make us stand aghast with horror." The victim was a lawyer and novelist who evidently inflicted years of abuse upon his wife Ellen Hardin, one of the founders of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The defense claimed "that the father's violent and bad conduct towards the prisoner and all his family was so bad as to lead to the contemplation of a crime like this." Perhaps taking this claim into account, the jury convicted him of second degree murder, rather than murder in the first degree. McDade 1038. Marke 1008. II Harv. Law Cat. 1219.

KUNICHIKA (Toyohara).
Marx, Karl / Engels, Friedrich).
London & Hamburg, A. Darson & Otto Meissner, 1873. 8vo. (4), 137, (1) pp. Original printed wrappers. First edition. - From the collection of the French socialist and writer Paschal Grousset (1844-1909) with his autograph note on the title, repeated on the final page: "Ce Rapport est en entier l'ouevre de Karl Marx. Londres, Dec.bre 1874. Paschal Grousset". In fact, scholarship today agrees that the text of the "Conclusion" was jointly edited by Marx and Engels in July 1873, to serve as the final chapter to this brochure which Engels and Lafargue produced according to a resolution at the Congress of the Hague. On the 26th of July 1873, Engels wrote to Sorge: "Lafargue et moi l'avons écrit ensemble, seule la conclusion est de Marx et de moi." - The Corsican-born Grousset was elected a member of the Paris Commune, serving on its Executive Committee and as Delegate for External Affairs. Deported to New Caledonia in 1872, he escaped via Australia, the U.S., and Britain, and it was during this period of exile that he penned the quoted lines in the present volume. Grousset returned to France after the 1880 amnesty and became a sometime collaborator of Jules Verne, as well as a Socialist Deputy for the 12th arrondissement of Paris. - Paper brittle and chipped in places, the printed wrapper more so; spine professionally repaired. Extremely rare. Rubel 726. Stammhammer I, 3. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

London: Henry S. King & Co., 1873. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and boards lettered and ruled in gilt and black, dark green endpapers. Housed in a brown flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. "The wonderful clearness of Bagehot's power of statement, his exact knowledge of the subject treated on, together with his firm grasp of economic theory, have caused this volume to exert an influence whic … [Click Below for Full Description]

MUYBRIDGE, Eadweard James (1830-1904)
San Francisco: Bradley & Rulofson, 1873. Mammoth plate albumen photograph, mounted onto the photographer's lettered card mount. Image size: 17 x 21 1/2 inches. Sheet size: 24 3/8 x 29 1/2 inches. MInor repairs at edges of card mount. Rare mammoth-plate photograph of Yosemite by Muybridge."Muybridge was justifiably celebrated as a landscape photographer for his series of mammoth-plate Yosemite views made [between June and December] in 1872 and offered for sale by Bradley and Rulofson in 1873. They are perhaps summed up best by Naef, who describes the two photographers "as different as romanticism and classicism" and elsewhere as "painterly" (Muybridge) versus "sharp focus precision" (Watkins).
