HUGO (Victor)
HUGO (Victor). MIVART, St George Jackson
1873 1ed Mivart Man & Apes DARWIN EVOLUTION Zoology Illustrated Gorilla Catholic A first edition account of George Mivart’s reaction to Darwinian naturalism. George Mivart was a 19th-century English biologist known for his attempts to merge the beliefs of Darwinian evolution and the Catholic Church – curiously, he was condemned by everyone! Mivart held views that were contrary to other scientists, including his view on the language of animals – he states: “Since we are unable to converse with brutes, we can but divine and infer from their gestures, motions, and the sounds they emit, what may be the nature of their highest psychical powers.” Mivart discounted many of Darwin’s own studies including his “hasty attribution of human qualities to brutes, on account of certain superficial resemblances.” (Radick, p.69). According to Cooper and Hull, “Mivart describes primates, including humans, as being ‘unguiculate, claviculate, placental mammals, with orbits encircled by bone; three kinds of teeth, at least at one time of life; brain always with a posterior lobe and calcarine fissure ” Item number: #5231 Price: $750 MIVART, St George Jackson Man and apes an exposition of structural resemblances and differences bearing upon questions of affinity and origin.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Nine engraved charts on one map sheet, detailing anchorages at Safaja Island, Akik Seghir, Mersa Halaib, Mersa Sheikh Ibrahim, Sherm Dumeigh, Hodeida Road, Approaches to Ras El Askar, Farisan I., and Eid Road, including tidal information, compass roses, soundings, seabed notations, currents, sandbanks, shoals, lighthouses and beacons, inland elevations, detailing and buildings. Detailed chart of the harbours and anchorages in the Red Sea. In addition these charts included information on shoals, reefs, and other navigational hazards that plagued mariners a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Used, well read book which has been professionally restored. Has some minor, visible tape marks on cover. Used, vintage 1873 edition of this science fiction classic. The book has just been gently restored by a professional New York restorer. The binding had become loose and a previous owner had put tape around the binding to the front and back covers. The marks from the removed tape can still be seen but the binding is now properly tight. I am an estate liquidator, not a book seller so I can't properly grade this book. There is some fading and foxing within the book but it is completely readable. There is a previous owner's name written inside. Those of you familiar with this book can decide if you consider it a first edition or second first edition based upon the bindery fire which destroyed many first editions. I have priced the book well below current asking and historical selling prices on this site. It is a great opportunity for any collector to fill a hole in their collection. Please view all photos carefully and ask all questions before bidding. No returns. Ships to USA only, with standard USPS insurance. If buyer wants more insurance I will provide invoice for additional amount.

The Gaucho Martin Fierro is an epic poem and perhaps the most significant Argentinian literary contribution made in the 19thcentury, it is the pinnacle of the "poesia gauchesca" and considered the national poem of Argentina, the work deals the most romantic of all characters of Argentina: the Gaucho. This poem supplied a link to the rebellious gaucho contribution in the development of Argentina, from their participation in the independence from Spain, to the rejection of a process of "civilization", as expressed by Sarmiento in his Facundo; the gaucho was a hero and a pariah, the representative of what was autochthonous and what was a symbol of the past, a deterrent of progress, and the "barbarie". The poem is centered on the life of Martin Fierro, conscripted to fight the Indians, he becomes disenchanted with the cruelty and abuses of army life and eventually joins the Indians, and is told in what is known as "payadas", single verses that tell a story and narrate what is happening. Second edition, published a year after the first -extremely rare- and the first appearance outside of Argentina, published in parts over the run of 12 numbers -and thus hard to find complete. The poem had a second part, the Vuelta de Martin Fierro (first published in 1879) which didn't have the same acceptance the first had. The Martin Fierro has been translated into over 70 languages, and published in innumerable editions. The rarity of early editions is exceptional, the first edition has only appeared at auction once, in 1988 at Sotheby's, when it made 4,400 GBP; there is … [Click Below for Full Description]
