JULES VERNE
Geo. M. Smith & Company 1873.First Edition, First Printing. Beautiful clean book with the original end papers, and a crisp binding. TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEAS 1873 FIRST EDITION BY JULES VERNE Geo. M. Smith & Company 1873. First Edition, First Printing. Beautiful clean book with the original end papers, and a crisp binding. The true first printing of this book was printed by Osgood in 1873. However the Boston fire destroyed all but an estimated 50 copies of this printing so the 1873 Geo Smith printing is considered the next true first edition (or some refer to as the second printing of the first edition of this book), printed by Geo. M. Smith & Company 1873. Fully illustrated with 110 illustrations, 303 pages. The book is in great condition with vibrant emerald green boards with gilt scenes and titles to the front and spine, and still has the scarce original brown coated end papers. The book has benefited from slight restoration with the spine rebacked with the original cloth laid back down, and presents extremely well. Original tissue guard is present, slightly foxed, affecting the surrounding 3 pages only, otherwise the interior pages are overall remarkably clean and fresh with just a scant random faded handling mark. The book has no edgewear, and the binding is very tight and square, Unlike most copies of this title which have poor/cracked bindings and loose pages, this book is tightly bound and is quite readable and not fragile. Has a spectacular presentation. Please see many detailed images. Beautiful rare, important Verne book in collectible Clean conditio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Browning, Robert
Smith, Elder & Co, 1873. Inscription on title page reads, "The Master of Balliol - from his friend RB. / May 7 '73." Green cloth covers show light edge wear and light surface staining. Corners square but rubbed through, Spine ends and external hinges show heavier (still light) wear. Front internal hinge cracked, binding somewhat loose. Scattered foxing throughout book. A later date (May 1957) is written on ffep in pen along with a pencil signature. On title page, near inscription, an old price is written very lightly in pen. Includes telegram dated May 8, 1957 which reads, "Yes R.B's handwriting and signature. Our good friend Mr. Cramer sent to England for it. I agree what a find. Other little book also first I think. He is looking for the silent answer. Letter pending. L.L."; Signed by Author(s)

[American Naval Log Book]
[Primarily at sea, especially in the Mediterranean], 1873. [68]pp., plus a 1 1/2 x 3-inch contact-print and a few notes. Approximately 9500 words. Red pebbled cloth with decorative red paper boards. Boards rubbed, tears in paper. Binding loose, text block separating from boards. Text clean. Four leaves cut from back of text block. Else good. A manuscript log and journal of the U.S.S. Brooklyn during her cruise to European waters, kept by an unknown author, but probably a regular seaman from the spelling and language. The Brooklyn traveled primarily in the Mediterranean, stopping frequently in Naples, Lisbon, Palermo, Toulon, and Gibraltar. The log is comprised of three parts: the first records the arrival and departure of the Brooklyn from ports; the second is a journal of recent events and noteworthy occurrences on board and in ports; the third part offers twenty-six brief but interesting descriptions of ports in which the Brooklyn anchored. This last section is the longest, and notable for the knowledge the writer shares; he often includes notes on the city's ancient history, geography, architecture, and culture. The Brooklyn was active in several key naval battles of the Civil War including the capture of both Vicksburg and Mobile Bay. The contact print is the image of a sloop, probably the Brooklyn, with the inscription on the back, "Flagship Brookling [sic] for my Frank," referring to the period (1874-86) when the Brooklyn served as the Flagship of the south Atlantic fleet.

Nietzsche
Leipzig: 1873. Recently rebound in old, contemporary marbled paper over boards with new spine, lettered in gilt. Internally, bright and clean. A very good copy of one of Nietzsche's early works. Nietzsche Destroys David Strauss... NIETZSCHE, Friederich. Unzeitgemässe Betrachtungen I: David Strauss (Unconventional Observation I: David Strauss). Leipzig: E. W. Fritzsch, 1873. TP + [1]-101 + [102] = advertisements, Octavo. First Edition, First Issue. (Schaberg 23a) The first of Nietzsche's Unconventional Observations was an attack on David Strauss the writer who had made his reputation with his scandalous Life of Jesus in 1835. Here Nietzsche attacks his most recent book The Old and the New Faith, which advocated the rejection of the Christian faith in favor of a Darwinian, materialistic and patriotic world-view. Nietzsche accuses Strauss of being a "Cultural Philistine" and denounces him as an exemplar of pseudo-culture. Although erudite, the essay is extremely intemperate and filled with references to many of Nietzsche's scholarly contemporaries. The climax is a literary tour de force, in which Nietzsche cites a litany of malapropisms from Strauss, interspersed with his own barbed comments. For Nietzsche, Strauss's book was the incarnation of the Zeitgeist: unproductive smugness, intellectual snobbery, superficial assimilation of great works of art and new scientific theories, myopic criticism and patronizing praise of even the greatest genius...But what enraged him most was Strauss's comfortable and untroubled renunciation of Christianity, coupled with an easy conviction th … [Click Below for Full Description]

WALTON, Elijah [artist] and Thomas George BONNEY.
WALTON, Elijah [artist] and Thomas George BONNEY. Vignettes: Alpine and Eastern ... In Two Series. Eastern Series. London, W.M. Thompson, 1873.Folio. Original maroon cloth over bevelled boards by Leighton, Son and Hodge, upper board blocked with design in gilt, lower board blocked in blind, spine lettered in gilt, lemon-yellow endpapers, all edges gilt; pp. [viii, 24, advertisements ]; 12 mounted chromolithographic plates after Walton, printed by M. & N. Hanhart, each with tissue guard; binding with wear and a little faded, front hinge re-inforced, occasional light spotting on card mounts, text a little browned, else very good.First edition, the second series only (the first series was devoted to the Alps and is thus wholly non-Middle-Eastern in subject), devoted to Sinai, the Nile, Baalbek, Constantinople and the Bosphorus and with one view of the Acropolis in Athens. The Birmingham-born artist Elija Walton discovered early on in his career that he had talent for mountain landscape painting. After a sojourn in Switzerland he moved to Egypt (where his wife died), and then on to Syria, Lebanon and Istanbul. After two years abroad he returned for a short period to London, only to work for for five more years abroad. This rare volume is the only published outcome of his love for Middle Eastern scenery and landscape, apart fom a work on The Camel, its Anatomy, Proportions, and Paces, both written and illustrated by Walton. Similar to David Roberts, the artist produced the designs specifically for publication, not to be hand-coloured, but to be printed in superior chromolit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas Hardy
Thomas Hardy - A Pair of Blue Eyes - 1873 3 vol UK first edition published by Tinsley Brothers Three volumes, bound in fairly recent dark blue half-leather with marbled boards and the spines lettered and decorated in gilt and blind with raised bands. Lacking the half-titles and ads. The books are firmly bound and externally a little bumped with a few minor scuffs to the leather. The text blocks are uniformly slightly toned and foxed with staining to some pages in all three volumes, there is loss to the edge of page 31/32 in vol. II which does not affect the text. Hardy's third novel and the first to be published under his own name; a haunting work with autobiographical elements and a splendidly evoked Cornish setting which adds much to the drama, perhaps most notably when the heroine removes her undergarments to fashion a rope in order to rescue her lover who has fallen from a cliff-top. There are some faults, but on the whole this is a rather pleasing example of the first edition. [Attributes: First Edition]
