Andreas, A. T.
Chicago: Self-Published, 1873. Folio. 3 preliminary leaves, 8-196 pages, index, 25 color maps, profusely illustrated with portraits, the great homes, and sites of Peoria and surroundings. C. Ballance had written a History of Peoria in 1870 without illustrations and tried to describe the early buildings but it was this volume which became the major acquisition for collectors in the late 19th century. The businesses are depicted in addition to the maps as well as the great farms, houses, and sub-maps. The first train reached Peoria in November, 1854, and subsequently Peoria became the fourth largest regional hub in the American railroad system. At one time, Peoria served 15 separate railroads. So many traveling theatrical groups and interpreters passed through in the mid to late 19th century that Peoria became the arbiter of the tastes of middle America as well as indicating the limits on off color humor. Few copies that are complete have survived since the maps of the various counties and buildings have often been removed from public university and library copies. Very nicely rebacked. Very nice.

J B Lippincott & Co. Very Good: Previous Owner(s) have Written their names: Illustrations intact both in text and full page. One of the few Verne titles not published by the British firm Sampson Low, this Lippincott edition contains all three of the tales involved in the search for the Missing Captain Grant. Heavily illustrated, this rare volume is in wonderful condition with all the Engravings intact to the best of my knowledge. This is a very nice edition with green boards (as opposed to the blue or terra cotta) with gilt medallion decoration on the front with. A wonderful sailing vessel and black embossed decorations around the edge. The binding has gilt and black decorations (see photos). The previous owner(s) has written their names on first spare page (1873, 1890) but otherwise, just a pristine copy. Please do not hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures. Very Good Condition: 8vo (9" X 6 1/4" X 1 7/8"), green boards with gilt and black decorations; heavily decorated spine with gilt and black. Slight scuffing and paint loss. Some evidence of reading and age appropriate change in paper. Very Good: some very minor scuffing: faint paper change due to age: Gorgeous gilt and black front: original dark brown endpapers. Gorgeous edition of verne's Classic "20000 Leagues Under the Sea" with one hundred and ten illustrations courtesy of the edition of James R. Osgood & Co, considered the "true first" edition, most of which, according to legend, were destroyed in a fire. In excellent condition, this has been identified as variously a first American edition, second issue or a second United States edition, first Smith edition. Either way, this is a lovely copy of Verne's classic with the bright green publisher's binding embellished with gilt and black on front and spine while the back is plain with debossed rectangles at the outer edges. The illustrations are intact, and are by Verne's frequent collaborator, Edouard Riou with the Engravings done by Hildibrand. On page 303, "The End" is there, barely. Just a great copy of a classic tale of adventure by one of The masters of the field. Very Good Condition: 8vo: green publisher's cloth with gilt embossed Captain Nemo viewing through a sextant, gilt cartouche with black lettering and delicate flourishes around: spine is heavily gilt decorated with the Captain at the Wheel under black lettered gilt bands: original brown endpapers intact and unscathed: illsutrations by Riou intact with at least one leaving shading on facing page: "the end" on page 303, faint but present: mild edge wear: "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas: or, the Marvelous and Exciting Adventures of Pierre Aronnax, Conseil, his Servant, and Ned Land, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Friederike Kempner, "schlesische Nachrigall"
Friederike Kempner (* 25. Juni 1828 in Opatow, Provinz Posen 23. … [Click Below for Full Description]

1873. First Edition, First Printing, First State: This extremely scarce (one of 50), FIRST ISSUE binding was published by Osgood- which was then later published by Geo. M. Smith. This book has ALL the First Issue points including the words ?Under the Sea? printed on the front panel, and with central jellyfish vignette in gilt on the front board (later changed to Captain Nemo using a sextant). The title page notes the publisher of James R. Osgood and Company, Boston, and the last page has the words ?The End? printed on page 303. The Boston fire destroyed all but an estimated 50 copies of this printing, as such this is an extremely scarce book. An attractive copy in vibrant green cloth with gilt scenes and titles to the front and spine (this book was issued in several colors). The book spine, and one corner tip, has been professionally rebacked retaining all of the original cloth. Beautiful scarce internally clean book with the original tissue guard, with but all about 8 pages with stains in the outer margins, otherwise no stains, no bent pages, no foxing and no writing. The original brown end papers are still present with No owner names, No bookplates and No inscriptions. Fully illustrated with 303 pages, and ?The End? printed on page 303. Please see many detailed images. Beautiful rare, important Verne book in collectible Clean condition with the scarce original end papers. Jules Verne
Sampson Low, Marston, Low & Searle/Osgood. We're cleaning our basement warehouse some more... Here is an absolute classic science fiction novel: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea by Jules Verne. This is the rare variant C of the rare first American edition of this great work. This was issued in 1873 by the Osgood Company of Boston, binding the sheets printed in London by Sampson Low, Marston, Low & Searle and shipped across the Atlantic to the Osgood Company. Most of all three Osgood variants were lost in the Great Boston Fire of that year, resulting in the scarcity of this volume, of which only some dozens are thought to exist. Clues that this is the first American edition include: the title on the gilt cover ends in '...Sea' while on the inner title page, it ends in '...Seas'. In addition, on the last page, #303, the book ends with the words: 'THE END'. There is a wonderful website,, which contains more detailed information on distinguishing these first edition variants from the many which followed. In addition, this book is further made unique by the fact that on the spine, although not on the front cover, many of the gold lines and the word 'ILLUSTRATED' are double-struck! I have seen several of these books, both in person and in photos, and have never seen this 1873 manufacturing flaw on any others - unique ! I purchased this book in Fairhaven, Massachusetts in 1969. It was repaired later by John Buller of the Bessemer Bookbindery in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He repaired a one inch rip in the upper outer portion of the spine hinge between the rear cove … [Click Below for Full Description]

A good copy. First edition. Roger Dawson Upton (d. 1881) served as a captain with the 9th Lancers and was one of the early experts on the bloodlines of British thoroughbreds. Verne, Jules
Boston: and Co., 1873. First Edition. Hardcover. Item #21091 First fully illustrated US edition. xvi, 315pp. Salmon cloth stamped in gold and black, bevelled edges, dark brown endpapers, all edges gilt. With fifty-four plates and an engraved illustration in the text by A. de Neuville and L. Benett and a small drawing by Verne. Introduction by Adrien Marx. Translated by George M. Towle. In his article in the July/August 1996 issue of Firsts Arthur B. Edwards notes that "... there is a fully illustrated Osgood octavo edition, published at the end of November, 1873, taken from the British sheets. This is titled Around the World in Eighty Days, and is very scarce. It seems to have had production problems that caused the spine to crack and chip when the book was read; consequently no 1873 copies have been seen in better than good condition (p. 42)." Cloth is worn at spine ends, spine panel faded, hinges a bit tender, neatly penned inscription on flyleaf dated Christmas 1873. A very good copy. Barron, Anatomy of Wonder, 1981, 1-165. Department of Crown Lands. 1873. A large map, 170 x 77cm, printed in black & white on a single linen-backed sheet, folded into 44 panels; occasional wear at folds. Bound into red morocco boards, lettered in gilt; rubbed, sl. wear to foot of spine. A nice example. One copy listed on Copac, in BL, giving the place of publication as Montreal. OCLC adds three printed copies: Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales du Québec, Wisconsin Historical Society and Toronto's Thomas Fisher Library. A scarce map of south-eastern Canada, published shortly after its inception as a Dominion territory in 1867. Drawn to a scale of 1:1.8 million, the map shows a relatively high amount of detail, with particular regard to railway lines, which were spreading across the region at this time. An inset table in the bottom right corner shows a list 'of the various railway stations in the Province and their respective distances'. A number of the lines are shown as proposed only. Running across the middle of the map (printed in blue and red; the only part of the map printed in colour) is the U.S./Canada border. A great part of the northern United States is shown, from Minnesota in the west, to New York and the states of New England in the east. The cartographer Thomas Devine was born in Ireland around 1818, and emigrated to Canada in the 1840s. Following a background in the Royal Engineers, he became a surveyor and draftsman, spending his working life in the service of the Crown Lands Department. In 1857 he produced a map of north-west Canada, encompassing 'Indian Territory & Hudson's Bay'; it was one of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sotgia Rovelli, Mario (legatura); [Carducci, Giosuè]
Tip. d'Ignazio Galeati e Figlio, 1873. Legatura originale. Minimi segni d'usura, ma ottimo esemplare. Bellissima legatura originale in stile futurista-fascista, databile agli anni '30. [Click Below for Full Description]
