James Clerk Maxwell
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1873. Good condition. See description for details. James Clerk Maxwell (1831 - 1879) A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism Maxwell's "Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism is probably, after Newton's Principia, the most renowned book in the history of physics. It was published in 1873 and has been in continuous use ever since. In 1000 pages of crisply written text and mathematics it encompasses virtually everything that was known about electricity and magnetism. It has inspired most of the work done in the subject ever since" (Basil Mahon, The Man Who Changed Everything: The Life of James Clerk Maxwell). In 1873, Maxwell published a "difficult two-volume Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism that was destined to change the orthodox picture of physical reality. The treatise did for electromagnetism what Newton's Principia had done for classical mechanics. It not only provided the mathematical tools for the investigation and representation of the whole of electromagnetic theory, but it altered the very framework of both theoretical and experimental physics" (Bruce J. Hunt, The Maxwellians). Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1873. Octavo, brown cloth boards with brown morocco spine, red morocco title label, gilt lettering. Two volumes. First issue, with undated 15-page catalog with "just published" after Maxwell listing. Complete with 20 plates. RARE, particular in first issue. Manuscrit
[Click Below for Full Description]

On it's own, this 1st American issue of Verne's "Tour of the World" is valuable. However, it's value is greatly enhanced by other attributes, as you will learn below. Contemporary binding in gorgeous green calf decorated and titled in gilt, ribbed spine, marbled endpapers and all edges gilt, two color title page. Inscribed by him to the owner of the book, Mrs. Nellie W. Pillsbury, "with the best wishes of her old friend "the finisher" signed and dated Ocober 1952. Which suggests that Zabriskie finished this job two years before his death, at 86 - possibly one of the last books he completed, and maybe that's why he signed it "the finisher" - it may have required considerable time and effort on his part. Owner: Nellie Weston Pillsbury (d. 1963) of Maine. One of her daughters, Nellie Ruth King (d 1973), was the mother of Stephen King - … [Click Below for Full Description]

In three volumes complete. Reade began his literary career as a dramatist, and it was his own wish that the word 'dramatist' should stand first in the description of his occupations on his tombstone. As an author, he always had an eye to stage effect in scene and situation as well as in dialogue. Reade also produced three elaborate studies of character: Griffith Gaunt (1866), A Terrible Temptation (1871), A Simpleton (1873). The first of these was in his own opinion his best novel. Reade's novels were popular, and he was among England's highest-paid novelists; however, many libraries refused to carry his works on the grounds that they were indecent. Brainard, Mary
Rockford: Gazette Steam Book & Job Printing House, 1873. First edition. Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and front board. Spine lightly sunned and corners bumped, front hinge a bith tender but a pleasing copy overall. Pencil ownership inscription to front pastedown: "From Ma Pronty, 1883." With the exception of a small stain affecting the lower outer margin of The Homestead and faint offsetting on page 32-33, internally a neat copy. The work appears to have been self-published; and it was likely designed for distribution among select family and friends. Scarce in institutions and in the trade, this is the only copy currently on the market. One of the first American women to serve in a government nursing post, Mary Brainard was no stranger to the realities of war and peace. "Mrs. Brainard saw the hard side of war life, and worked many a long night over sick and dying soldiers...she was made nurse and head matron of the hospital at Lebanon, Kentucky, then going to the hospital at Lewisville as head nurse...Because of her faithful work she was awarded a pension by a special act of Congress" (Church). Brainard's wartime experiences are unavoidable throughout the volume. The Homestead, for example, is filled with nostalgia tinged with harsh reality as Brainard reflects on the rural landscape and future harvests, while also admitting that her song is one "of sorrow sanctified, Of trial overpast; I catch the meaning if I can Of every shadow cast." Verse such as The Desolate and War are even more deeply entrenched in loss, returning again and again to images of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Limited edition of 1000 copies in contemporary half-leather binding with gilt lettering and details, textured boards, and marbled endpapers. John Ruskin (8 February 1819 - 20 January 1900) was the leading English art critic of the Victorian era, as well as an art patron, draughtsman, watercolourist, a prominent social thinker and philanthropist. He wrote on subjects as varied as geology, architecture, myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany and political economy. Modern Painters is a five-volume work by Ruskin, begun when he was 24 years old. Ruskin argues that recent painters emerging from the tradition of the picturesque are superior in the art of landscape to the old masters. The book was primarily written as a defence of the later work of J.M.W. Turner. Ruskin used the book to argue that art should devote itself to the accurate documentation of nature. In Ruskin's view, Turner had developed from early detailed documentation of nature to a later more profound insight … [Click Below for Full Description]

Andreas, A. T.
Chicago: Self-Published, 1873. Folio. 3 preliminary leaves, 8-196 pages, index, 25 color maps, profusely illustrated with portraits, the great homes, and sites of Peoria and surroundings. C. Ballance had written a History of Peoria in 1870 without illustrations and tried to describe the early buildings but it was this volume which became the major acquisition for collectors in the late 19th century. The businesses are depicted in addition to the maps as well as the great farms, houses, and sub-maps. The first train reached Peoria in November, 1854, and subsequently Peoria became the fourth largest regional hub in the American railroad system. At one time, Peoria served 15 separate railroads. So many traveling theatrical groups and interpreters passed through in the mid to late 19th century that Peoria became the arbiter of the tastes of middle America as well as indicating the limits on off color humor. Few copies that are complete have survived since the maps of the various counties and buildings have often been removed from public university and library copies. Very nicely rebacked. Very nice.

Philadelphia PA: Stedman, Brown and Lyon, 1873. First edition 1873 Atlas of the United States. It's interesting to note that Oklahoma was then referred to as Indian Country! The atlas shows lots of wear over the years... the cover is cloth and leather, in poor shape, but everything belonging to the atlas seems to be there. Nothing is falling out...it's just that the binding is loose. The pages are cream colored, with some darkening on the edges, but are in my estimation ... as witness the photographs ... in very good condition. Rebinding this atlas would put it back into great shape!
