American Odd Fellows : 1873 Chromolithograph Broadside of The Lord's Prayer (Freemasonry, Fraternal Orders)

Columbus, OH: M. C. Lilley, 1873. Broadside. Good. Chromolithograph broadside, 28" tall x 22" wide, with narrow tide line water stains to edges, some rippling, toning and creases, edge wear with a few closed tears and minor losses, heavy browning verso. A virtual puzzle of 19th century fraternal imagery, this broadside is beautifully printed in multiple colors, with each color and its attendant icons representing a different degree of membership achievement within the Order of the American Odd Fellows. One example is "The Triple Links" with "F.L.T." printed within each link, a recurring symbol among American Odd Fellows, standing for "Friendship, Love and Truth" and one of three icons representing The American Odd Fellows Initiation rite. The Ohio publisher of this broadside was "... M.C. Lilley Co., which began its existence as a publisher and book bindery, but morphed into the world's largest manufacturer and supplier of regalia, clothing and equipment that outfitted the members of the Masonic Temple, Knights of Pythias, Knights Templar and International Order of Odd Fellows of the world." Craig Lovelace/Business First, 2012. A still mostly whole survivor, and uncommon thus.

An Analysis of the Fifth Book of Hooker's Ecclesiastical Polity

London - F C & J Rivington et al. 1873 - An extremely scarce first edition of Reverend B Kennicott's analysis of Hooker's polity. With errata page to the rear. The analysis is of Hooker's fifth book of Polity, originally published in 1597. Hooker's Lawes of Ecclesiastical Politie is his best-known work. It has been characterized as probably the first great work of theology and philosophy to be written in English. The work is a reply to the general principles of Puritanism. Richard Hooker was an English priest in the Church of England. He was one of the most important English theologians of the sixteenth century and was incredibly influential in his work. This analysis is written by Benjamin Kennicott, an English churchman and Hebrew scholar. Condition: In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the board edges and spine. Externally, smart with rubbing particularly to the head and tail of spine. Some loss to head of spine due to rubbing. Joints are also subject to some rubbing alongside areas of the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Under the Greenwood Tree. A Rural Painting of the Dutch School. LATER ISSUE OF HARDY'S FIRST BOOK PUBLISHED IN THE US

Henry Holt, New York, 1873. 8vo., First US Edition [Later Issue]; original pictorial mustard cloth blocked and lettered in black, backstrip lettered in gilt and black, very neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, original printed endpapers wholly preserved, covers very lightly age-soiled (but every detail of the blocking bright and clear), corners very lightly bruised without material damage, a remarkably bright, clean copy. HARDY'S FIRST BOOK PUBLISHED IN THE US AND THE SECOND EDITION OF THE WORK OVERALL. Hardy's second novel 'Under the Greenwood Tree' was first published by Tinsley in 1872, one of the 'best press-noticed' books sold by that publisher. Under the terms of Tinsley's new agreement with Holt of New York it was then issued by the latter in their popular 'Leisure House' series in June 1873, the first of Hardy's works to be so issued in the US. His first novel 'Desperate Remedies' (1871) did not appear in the series until March 1874. From the series catalogue present on the front endpapers it is clear that this is a later issue (at least 1881 since the list includes 'A Laodician'). Most volumes in the 'Leisure Hour' series were severally reissued with updated endpapers. This copy has been expertly rebacked. The original, elaborately blocked, backstrip is virtually complete with just a few millimetres missing at extreme head and tail. The original endpapers, which carry a detailed catalogue of the 'Leisure Hour' series catalogue printed in red, are all complete and virtually unmarked. The top edge is mildly dust-soiled but this does not extend to the text, which also shows practically no trace of the usual foxing and spotting. A NOTABLE COPY AND A RARE SURVIVAL. See Purdy, p.8 et seq. NCBEL III 981.

ALS, to Corporal M. W. Van Amber concerning oil wells in Pennsylvania: "Oil on the Brain": Signed letter from 'Libbie M. T.' dated March 4th 1865, Watertown, to a Civil War corporal in Washington DC. The Drake Well, drilled in 1859 along the banks of Oil Creek, Venango County PA, was the first commercial oil well in the country, spawning an oil rush to the area. The writer describes the interest in the Pennsylvania oil in her home town: "I presume you have heard about the oil wells in Pennsylvania. There is a man not far from here that put in one hundred dollars share and then sold the share for one hundred twenty thousand dollars. There is a good many here that has go the Oil on the brain, and I think Father has for he talks of selling out." "I can see more than fifty Derricks from here. I went down last eve to see the Island Well, it flows all of the time. I wish you could see it, it is a sight and if I stay here this Winter I will send for you and you shall see what their (sic) is in Oil dom (sic)." In January of 1865 two massive oil strikes by the Frazier and the Twin Wells transformed a quiet western Pennsylvania farm into the largest oil boomtown in American history. Pithole became the home of the first commercial oil well in the US and of the world's first oil pipeline. Oil production hit 6,000 barrels per day and the population swelled to 20,000 by Christmas. The letter, dated July 23rd, 1865 and signed "Gene", describes the astonishing activity in Pithole and the hopes of the writer and other family members to establish a hotel there: "Our house is not quite ready, but we have to take what we can. We could have five hundred (guests) if we could keep them (and) get from ten to twelve Dollars per Week for Board". Gene, writing to his wife, asks her to send letters "direct to G. E. Graves, Pleasant Ville P. A. ... their (sic) is no Post Office here ..." Folded, 5 x 8". Cream lined writing paper. Very good condition. 3. Ca. 1860. Shipping Oil -- Story Farm. Stereocard. For a beautiful silk dress plus $30,000 Mrs. William Story sold the oil producing Story Farm (Venango County, PA)-- the Farm went on to produce millions of dollars in oil over its almost one hundred years in operation. Its name was changed to the Columbia Farm, a joint stock company called the Columbia Oil Company was formed in 1861, and a young Andrew Carnegie became an early investor in it. The stereocard shows many barrels of oil piled along the shore of a river (probably Oil Creek) awaiting shipping. With the caption: '2800 Shipping Oil - Story Farm'. Yellow card stock, with 'American Scenery' printed at the right and left margins. 7 x 3 1/2 Very good condition. 4. Ca. 1873. Advertising card for Oil Well Supplies at Geo. Root) and a list of Inspectors of Election. Dated April 20th, 1869. 3 1/4 x 5". Very good condition. R. C. Root was the publisher of the earliest map (Map Of The Oil District Venango, Crawford & Warren Counties, Pennsylvania) of the Oil District, printed in 1864, which shows the individual operating wells all along Oil Creek. Phillips & Co is shown in two locations, including at the Tarr Farm and at the extreme right side of the map.       1873. Hand-coloured lithograph. 380 x 555 mm. Fine image of a Sparrowhawk, from John Gould's monumental "Birds of Great Britain" (London, 1862-1873, 5 vols.). Joseph Wolf (1820-99) "was the first bird artist to understand and use the new freedom of style that lithography allowed [...] He introduced natural settings and a feeling of motion into his paintings. Early training in lithography and art [...] opened the door to Wolf's development into one of the first and finest true bird artists. He breathed life into the stiff 'bird on a perch' portrayals so characteristic of bird art of the day. Wolf liked especially to paint birds of prey and game birds, with their subtle browns and grays" (Cornell University Library). Fine Bird Books 102. Nissen IVB 372. Sauer 23. Wood 365. Zimmer 261.

by the Author, [London 1873 - Hand-coloured lithograph by J.Wolf and H.C.Richter, printed by Walter. A beautiful image from John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain: "A magnificent work with life-like portraits of birds of the British Isles" (Wood) Gould's illustrations were all painstakingly coloured by hand, as he states in his Preface: "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however, is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand." Cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 102; cf. Nissen IVB 372; cf. Sauer 23; cf. Wood p. 365; cf. Zimmer p. 261.

1873 - (PHOTOGRAPHY) WILSON, Edward L., editor. The Philadelphia Photographer. Volume X, January 1873 to December 1873, Nos. 109-120. Philadelphia: Benerman & Wilson, 1873. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter black morocco, raised bands. $1500.Original 12 monthly issues of the premiere 19th-century photography journal, Numbers 109-120 (January""December, 1873), bound in one volume, with 13 original albumen plates mounted on heavy card stock, numerous in-text illustrations, and articles featuring renowned photographers such as William Bell of the Wheeler Expedition and renowned daguerreotype photographer Albert Sands Southworth.Reflecting the nation's growing passion for photography, Philadelphia formed a photographic society in 1864, accompanied by its own publication, an "outstanding independent journal". the Philadelphia Photographer, with Edward L. Wilson as editor. Through the efforts of Wilson this journal achieved an outstanding place in the photographic literature of the times. For many years it was the foremost publication of its kind in this country" (Taft, 205). Each issue is highlighted by a fine mounted frontispiece photograph, showcasing the work of accomplished commercial and landscape photographers, including the first publication in this journal of two striking plates printed in the heliotype process invented by Ernest Edwards. In addition, one issue has as its frontispiece an original albumen portrait of Benjamin French, whose company imported Voigtlander lenses, and another of photochemist Herman Vogel, the German scientist who "discovered that by dipping a plate in a colorant, it became sensitive to the color absorbed," a finding that ultimately led to the production of panchromatic film and "was to have important repercussions for the image itself" (Frizot, 234). The journal contains, as well, numerous articles by Vogel, an account from photographer William Bell, reporting from the Wheeler Expedition in Colorado on "Photography in the Grand Gulch of the Colorado River," and numerous talks given by Albert Sands Southworth at the Fifth Annual Meeting of the National Photographic Association. Southworth, one of the finest daguerreotype photographers of his time, also invented a device permitting the exposure of eight card negatives on a single plate, leading to the innovation of the card photograph, such as that represented in the albumen frontispiece for October (No. 118). The journal additionally features items on printing processes, retouching, developments in cameras, lenses and lighting, and includes the extensive September issue (No. 117), which offers comprehensive coverage of the National Photographic Association's annual meeting. With four pages of advertisements at rear of No. 120 (December). Text and images quite clean and fresh, only lightest scattered spotting without affecting images; slight edge-wear and soiling to covers of a near-fine collection of rare early American photography. Contemporary three-quarter green morocco and marbled boards, leather label on front cover, marbled endpapers.Very good. Provenance: Albert Marble (inscription on titlepage). A rare American photographically illustrated book and a wonderful collection of Massachusetts architectural photography. The buildings include Worcester High School, Walnut Street School, Thomas Street School, Sycamore Street School, the Worcester Public Library, the College of Holy Cross, Antiquarian Hall, Highland Military Academy, and many more. The book's compiler, Albert Marble, who has inscribed the titlepage, was the Superintendent of Public Schools in Worcester. A handful of notations from Marble can be found in the book, including autograph captions to some of the plates, a holographic correction on page 2. The note on the titlepage reads: "This volume was exhibited at the Vienna Exposition, 1873. APM." The 1873 Vienna Exposition brought together almost 26,000 exhibitors from all over the world, and this volume would certainly have fit the motto of the fair: "Culture and Education." A wonderful source for early photography of Massachusetts schools and public buildings. Unrecorded in OCLC.

Nihon Sanbutsushi [trans.: Government Survey of the Natural Resources of Japan]

Very numerous full-page woodcuts. Five parts in 11 vols. [complete]. Large 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block printed title labels on upper covers, stitched as issued oriental style (newly threaded). [Tokyo]: Monbusho [Ministry of Education], 1873-77. First edition of this massive survey of the natural resources of Japan. Ito (1803-1901), Japanese physician and biologist who studied Western science under Franz von Siebold during the 1820s, became a professor at the University of Tokyo. He was a leader in public health projects and science policy from the beginning of the Meiji period through the rest of his career. He established a method of vaccination for use in Japan which many consider his greatest achievement as a medical doctor. The present work is a government-sponsored review of the natural resources of Japan. It is the first great survey of the country after the establishment of the Meiji era in 1868. Ito reviews the mineral, agricultural, and fishery resources of many of the Japanese islands in enormous detail. Each area, known for its own individual natural products, is fully described with details regarding production, industrial and artisanal uses, etc. The survey was never completed but this set is complete with all the published parts. The woodcuts are here in particularly fine and sharp impressions, richly inked. Most of the woodcuts are titled with Japanese characters and their western names in Roman type. Fine set. Complete sets are very rare as the five parts were each individually issued; it is difficult to assemble a complete set.

A Treatise on the Law of Patents for Useful Inventions, in the...

1873. Final Edition of Curtis's Important Treatise on Patents Curtis, George Ticknor [1812-1894]. A Treatise on the Law of Patents for Useful Inventions, In the United States of America. Revised and Enlarged. Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 1873. xxxvii, 749 pp. Octavo (9" x 6"). Recent period-style calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands and red and black lettering pieces to spine, endpapers renewed. Light toning to text, minor edgewear to preliminaries and index leaves, internally clean. * Fourth and final edition. First published in 1849, this was one of the earliest American treatises on the subject. The granting of patents in Anglo-American law has often been marked by confusion over their scope and intent. There has been much debate, for example, about whether patents create monopolies. Curtis argued that they do not according to the common law. Instead, a patent is a "grant by the government to the author of a new and useful invention, of the exclusive right, for a term of years, of practising that invention" (xxi). Best known as an expert on the U.S. Constitution, Curtis was a prominent New York patent attorney and the author of important works on admiralty law and equity jurisprudence. Catalogue of the Library of the Harvard Law School (1909) I:503.

1873. [a handsome copy] or, The Marvellous and Exciting Adventures of Pierre Aronnax... Translated from the French. One Hundred and Ten Illustrations. (Edition of James R. Osgood & Co.) Sold Only by Subscription. Boston: Geo. M. Smith & Co., 1873. Original green cloth decorated in gilt and black. First American Edition, second and usual "Smith" issue, of Verne's famous tale of Captain Nemo and the submarine Nautilus. Considerable confusion surrounds the relationship of the two Boston 1873 title pages that can appear in this title -- the James R. Osgood & Company title page, and this usual Geo. M. Smith & Co. one (which refers to the Osgood one and indicates "sold by subscription only"). The bindings of the two are nearly identical (the Osgood binding reads "...UNDER THE SEA" and bears a jellyfish in the center of the front cover, whereas the Smith binding properly reads "...UNDER THE SEAS" and has Captain Nemo using a sextant on the front cover). Clearly the Osgood one is a bit earlier and is much scarcer: supposedly only about fifteen copies were known to exist, but we have handled more than a dozen of them over the past 20 years (all between $12,000 and $27,500), so our guess would be more like fifty. One theory is that the Osgood title page may have designated the subscription issue, and that the Smith one, being much less scarce, must have designated the subsequent trade issue. Another possibility is that most of the Osgood edition was consumed by a Boston fire.~This copy is a standard copy without gilt page edges (a deluxe feature for which the original buyer paid extra). On the final page of text, there is no "THE END" (some copies have it, some have it partially, and some do not have it at all; this is not an "issue point" as is sometimes claimed, but merely a case of type slippage during a single print run, with no bearing upon which copies were actually first to reach the public).~As for condition, this is a bright, nearly fine copy (a few tiny nicks in the spine ends); remarkably, the original dark brown endpapers of this hefty volume are still entirely intact..
