Rebello da Silva was a protégé of Herculano, and Herculano's best and most immediate successor; Herculano himself bragged that his disciple's work rivaled Sir Walter Scott's. Rebello da Silva also showed considerable skill as a historian and an excellent prose style in such works as the unfinished @Historia de Portugal nos séculos XVII e XVIII (5 volumes, 1860-1871), which remains a useful work. He was responsible for beginning to collect the documents on Portugal's relations with the Vatican that comprise the massive @Corpo diplomatico portuguez (1862- ), and he completed the Visconde de Santarem's @Quadro elementar das relações políticas e diplomáticas de Portugal, which set out the Portuguese role in exploring the west coast of Africa. Rebello da Silva (1822-1871), who was born in Lisbon and died there, was also a journalist, a brilliant political orator, a professor of political economy and a dramatist. The frontispiece portrait of the author is by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (1846-1905), one of the best Portuguese caricaturists. *** Not in Innocêncio; cf. Jean Baptiste Édouard Detaille (1848- 1912) französischer Schlachtenmaler. Schon in seiner Jugend war das familiäre Umfeld Detailles von Bezügen zum Militär der napoleonischen Ära geprägt. Sein Großvater diente unter Napoleon Bonaparte. seine Großtante war die Ehefrau des französischen Admirals Pierre de Villeneuve. Mit 17 Jahren trat Detaille in das Atelier Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissoniers ein und stellte 1867 sein erstes Bild. eine Ansicht des Ateliers seines Meisters. aus. Schon im nächsten Jahr vollendete er mit Die Rast der Trommler sein erstes Bild aus dem militärischen Genre. Die Motive für seine Bilder entsprachen Detailles Vorliebe für Soldaten und Pferde. Erfolge feierte er aber ebenso mit seinen lebendig gezeichneten Kostümbildern aus der Revolutionszeit (Eckplatz eines Cafés. Die Incroyables). Als 1870 der Deutsch-Französische Krieg ausbrach (an dem Detaille anfangs teilnahm). war seine Kunst fortan der Verherrlichung der Tapferkeit und des Edelmuts seiner Landsleute gewidmet. und da er die glückliche Wahl der Motive mit einer großen Lebendigkeit der Darstellung zu verbinden wusste. errangen seine Kriegsbilder eine ausgedehnte Popularität. Detaille war auch ein ausgezeichneter Aquarellmaler und veröffentlichte 1885 zusammen mit Jules Richard eine zweibändige illustrierte Geschichte der französischen Armee (L`armée française).       1873. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. "Kaiser Friedrich Barbarossa hatte zu Kaiserslautern bei seiner Burg einen Teich, in welchem er einen Lieblingsfisch hegte. Damit derselbe ihm nun bei seiner häufigen Abwesenheit, indem er des Reiches waltete und Heldenfahrten machte, nicht vertauscht werde, legte er dem Fische einen künstlich gearbeiteten Ring an, der die Eigenschaft hatte, mit dem Wachsthum des Trägers sich auszudehnen und so stets genau zu passen. Da wuchs der Fisch heran zu einem Riesenleibe, der in seiner Art seines Gleichen nicht hatte, und der Ring saß immer noch bequem und war ihm zugleich ein herrlicher Schmuck geworden. Als Wahrzeichen dieser Sage hat die Stadt Kaiserslautern in der Pfalz den Riesenfisch mit dem Ringe in ihrer prächtigen Fruchthaushalle bildlich dargestellt. Der Fremde sieht's, fragt nach der Bedeutung, und vernimmt die Sage. - Die Kirche Gottes auf Erden wird genannt der Leib Jesu Christi, den die alten Christen mit dem griechischen Namen Ichthys, welches Wort 'Fisch' bedeutet, sinnbildlich bezeichneten, weil sie die einzelnen Buchstaben als Anfangsbuchstaben für ebenso viele Wörter in der griechischen Sprache einen Satz bilden ließen, dessen Sinn war: 'Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn, Erlöser". Möge es gestattet sein, jene schöne Sage auf die Kirche anzuwenden [...]". - Der streitbare, aller geistlichen und universitären Ämter enthobene und später auch exkommunizierte Theologe war maßgeblich am Aufbau der altkatholischen Kirche beteiligt und wurde 1873 in Köln zum ersten altkatholischen Bischof Deutschlands gewählt. Viollet-le-Duc, first made Arabic art widely known in Europe and was immediately recognized as a classic. Paris: Garnier Frères, 1873. First Complete Edition, One of 25 copies on Chine. This is the expanded and entirely reworked folio edition of Doré's Rabelais of 1873. The first Doré Rabelais was published in 1854 by J. Bry Aine with 15 full-page engravings and 100 smaller woodcuts. The grand 1873 edition contained a total of 719 illustrations, representing the final expression of the artist for "un des plus beaux livres de Gustave Doré" (Carteret) and "the most successful illustrations of Rabelais ever made" (Brivois). Copies on Chine are of the greatest rarity, and, more importantly, they possess the most brilliant impressions of these highly artistic Doré engravings. Doré's Rabelais was his first important book, and it served to launch the famous series of illustrated classics illustrated by him. For no other publication did Doré create as many illustrations as he did for the Rabelais. As well no other author (or work) captured the artist's imagination sufficiently to induce him to return to the same work and issue an enlarged and expanded version. It is for this most classic of French novels, Gargantua et Pantagruel, that Doré created a contained universe of visual Rabelaisan imagery which remains unequalled before or since. Nun aber fehlt sonderbarer Weise [...] im Texte der zweite Bogen p 17-32 [...] Da mir nun dran gelegen ist baldmöglich den Bericht zu vollenden, so bitte ich Sie hierdurch inständig um rasche, möglich[st] umgehende Sendung jenes Bogens p[er] Kreuzband. Eine andere Bitte wiegt schwerer, worauf ich wo nicht sogleich doch baldige Antwort wünsche. Ich möchte Ihrem geschätzten Verlag mein neuestes (die älteren kennen Sie nicht!-) Opus anbieten [...]". - Eduard Krüger war Gründer eines Gesangvereins, mit dem er vor allem Oratorien Haydns und Händels aufführte, und betätigte sich als Mitarbeiter musikalischer Fachzeitschriften und Musikkritiker. "Seit 1838 war Krüger mit Robert Schumann bekannt, dessen neuromantische Reformideen er in seinen Publikationen unterstützte ('Beiträge für Leben und Wissenschaft der Tonkunst', 1847). Krüger redigierte 1848 vorübergehend die 'Neue Hannoversche Zeitung'. Nach seiner Berufung als akademischer Musikdirektor an die Univ. Göttingen wurde ihm 1861 der Professorentitel verliehen. Mit Max Herold und Ludwig Friedrich Schöberlein gründete Krüger 1876 die kirchenmusikalische Zeitschrift 'Siona'; außerdem gab er die Zeitschrift 'Frisia' heraus. Später widmete sich Krüger der Katalogisierung des musikalischen Bestandes der Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen" (DBE).

      Verdi's mention of a "Messa funebre" could, in fact, refer to his own Messa da Requiem. Verdi's letters do occasionally refer to the "Messa funebre," although the abbreviated "Messa" is more common. In a letter to mezzo-soprano Maria Waldmann, dated October 23, 1873, Verdi writes "Of course I would be delighted that you could take part in the Funeral Mass for the anniversary of Manzoni..." Composed in memory of his friend, the Italian poet and novelist, Alessandro Manzoni, the Messa was first performed on May 22, 1874, the first anniversary of Manzoni's death.. Ca. 55 x 90 mm. In brown ink. In Italian (with translation). Verdi would like additional information about a funeral mass ("Messa funebre"). "If you leave home ask about the funeral mass tomorrow in S. Lorenzo. I don't understand anything, but I would like to know what it's about." One very light and small foxed spot to blank left margin of recto; a few light and small foxed spots to verso.

        Slave-catching in the Indian Ocean. A record of naval experiences. London, Longmans, Green & Co. (colophon: printed by Spottiswoode & Co.), 1873.

VIII, (4), 503, (1) pp. With 8 steel-engraved plates including the frontispiece (the 5 signed ones engraved by Pearson) and a folding map of the Indian Ocean, Red Sea and the Gulf, hand-coloured in outline (lithographed by Edward Weller). Red cloth. First edition (only edition until a 1968 facsimile) of a very detailed and well-illustrated account of a British naval campaign to suppress the East African slave trade in the years 1868 to 1870, published only eight years after the end of the United States' Civil War and the abolition of slavery there. Slavery was not outlawed in the Ottoman Empire (which at the time of publication included Egypt and what is now Iraq) until 1882, and in Iran and most of the Gulf States not until the 20th century. The author, Captain Philip Howard Colomb (1831-99), was Commander of the HMS Dryad from 1868 to 1870 and led the campaign. He operated primarily in and around the Gulf, Oman and Zanzibar and captured seven slave ships during those two years. The illustrations show the Dryad and some of the slave ships, individual and group portraits of slaves encountered during the campaign, and views of ports where slave trading occurred. One of the group portraits was engraved after a photograph made by one of the Dryad's officers and other illustrations after drawings by other officers. The map ("The slave trading waters of the Indian Ocean") shows the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Red Sea and the Gulf, including Madagascar and the other islands. The first chapter relates Colomb's voyage to Aden, where he took command of the Dryad, and the next two chapters provide extensive background information to place the account of the campaign in context. Colomb's account of his own campaign includes chapters on individual regions (Bombay, Muscat and Oman, the Gulf, Madagascar, Zanzibar, etc.) and on various topics (slaves on board ship, the slave market, etc.). Colomb was promoted to Admiral after his retirement from active duty. The book is sometimes mistakenly ascribed to his younger brother, John Charles Ready Colomb. - Bookplate "HW". You are mistaken about the 'Debardeur', it is not a cabinet but a 12 x 10 size. We printed you all the smaller sized ones but could not do the layer in consequence of the accident to our large Hydraulic press. We have not yet received it back & cannot hope for it before the end of the month. I think it would be awkward for me to have shares in a company so far away & would rather dispose of my patents for Austria - either altogether or for half cash & half an interest in the Company. I enclose you a print from a negative of Luckhardts [...]". - Woodbury entwickelte 1864 die "Woodburytypie" (Photoglyptie), einen photochemischen Prozess, der zwischen ca. 1870 und 1900 vor allem in der qualitativ hochwertigen Buchillustration verbreitet war. Es handelte sich um die einzige kommerziell erfolgreiche Methode, feinste Abstufungen von Fotografien im Druck wiederzugeben. In den Jahren 1864-85 meldete Woodbury in England wie auch im Ausland über 30 Patente an, darunter solche zur Stereoskopie, Ballonphotographie, zu Dias, Filmen, und Projektoren.

Seit seinem Aufenthalt in Étretat 1860 hatte sich Courbet immer wieder dem Sujet des Meeres gewidmet; etliche Gemälde entstanden 1872 im Sanatorium Dr. Duval in Neuilly-sur-Seine: Fernier verzeichnet für dieses Jahr allein 12 solche Brandungs- und Küstengemälde (Nrn. 811-822), wovon einige noch 1872-74 verkauft wurden. Der Käufer dieser beiden Stücke scheint im Index des Werkverzeichnisses nicht auf. - Spuren alter Lochung im Rand; wohlerhalten. Vgl. R. Spine in six compartments bordered in gold; wide giltstamped cover borders and simple fillets. All edges gilt. Blue silk endpapers and gilt ornamental inner dentelle (signed: "Rosenberg, Graben 17, Wien"). Splendid work dedicated to Emperor Franz Josef, with illustrations by Franz Alt, P. J. N. Geiger, and others. A very few of the small number of copies printed were presented as personal gifts of the Emperor to the highest dignitaries, for whom the Viennese bookbinder Franz Felix Rosenberg manufactured elaborate, customized bindings with the insignia of the recipients. - Very rare: international library catalogs list only a single copy of the normal edition (BSB Munich).       - Rare autograph letter from the German music historian and musicologist best known for his 1873 biography of Johann Sebastian Bach and as the founder, in 1874, of the Leipzig Bach-Verein. Dated January 24, 1876. Writing to Leipzig music publisher Edmund Astor (son-in-law of Jakov Rieter-Biedermann and director of the Rieder-Biedermann Verlag's Leipzig office), Spitta acknowledges the receipt of a payment and clarifies the terms of an agreement about the publication of an article about the Leipzig Bach-Verein. He details the changes which will need to be made to his introduction to a volume of Bach cantatas which will be published by Rieter-Biedermann, and finishes by mentioning Heinrich von Herzogenberg, his co-founder of the Bach-Verein, who has recently stepped in for Alfred Volkland to conduct a concert.         Voyages of the Royal Yacht Victoria & Albert 1873-1874 - 1875-1876 [Bound Logbook Manuscript]

      [p] 66 Manuscript log book of the Royal Yacht Victoria & Albert (1873-1877) under the command of Prince Leiningen (a cousin of Queen Victoria) illustrated with a chart, an albumen photograph of HMS Alert and Discovery and manuscript descriptions of numerous Royal visitors and voyages. Small, lined octavo sized notebook by Griffin and Co in bespoke crushed black morocco, 'Bound by Ramage, London', all edges gilt, with the title in gilt on the front cover and a tantalising 'No 4' on the spine - only one volume present here. Leiningen's colourful medievalist bookplate (1889) appears on the front pastedown and the author has signed the conclusion of the log, dated Wednesday 3rd January 1877 when he handed over command to Captain Hugh Campbell, 'The End!! Leiningen Rear Admiral'. Presumably presented to him at this event, the rest of the log appears to be in another unnamed officer's hand with Leiningen referred to in the third person, frequently travelling on other royal yachts. Particularly interesting is the albumen photograph of a painting of HMS Alert and HMS Discovery mounted opposite the 1875 entry: '29 May HM: Ships 'Alert' & 'Discovery' sailed from Portsmouth on Arctic Exploration'. (This expedition under the command of Sir George Strong Nares was an attempt to reach the North Pole by Smith Sound.) Most dramatic were the events of 18 August, 1875 with the Queen on board the Alberta and Leiningen in attendance: 'While crossing Stokes Bay a collision occurred between the "Alberta" and schooner yacht "Mistletoe". The schooner sank in 3 minutes and in spite of all efforts to save her people 3 lives were unhappily lost.' Queen Victoria recorded her reaction to this disaster in her diary as 'shock & the complete disappearance of the yacht will never be forgotten by any of us who were present'. The vessel's log begins in April 1873 with a 'trial of Engines, and steamed around the Isle of Wight (Prince Leopold and suite on board)'. The first voyage in earnest was on 23 June 1873 with a stellar guest list of passengers including 'His Majesty The Shah of Persia, H.R.H. The Prince and Princess of Wales, The Cesarewitch [future Alexander III] and Cesarena of Russia. to review the Fleet at Spithead' followed by a detailed list of attendees, events, and of the royal visits to 'the "Agincourt" "Sultan" and "Devastation". returning into Harbor landed at the Dockyard at 2 P.M.' This is followed by a four page table of the vessels in attendance, their captains and finally an annotated printed chart showing the position of the vessels in the Solent. The log records numerous trips with the Queen, effectively taxiing the royals to and fro from the mainland such as that on Friday 11 July 1873: 'Her Majesty and suite Proceeded to Osborne in "Alberta". The "Victoria and Albert" proceeded to moorings in Cowes Roads' with Leiningen sometimes captaining other royal yachts. The future Alexander III seems to have made extensive use of the yacht during his visit in the summer of 1873, perhaps aiding in the negotiations that led to the wedding of his sister to Queen Victoria's son, Prince Alfred. Other passengers from the family of European royalty that fanned out from Queen Victoria and the late Prince Albert include 'The Crown Prince and Princess of Germany'(future Wilhelm II) whose cruise on the Solent in August 1874 was cut short by a storm. Leiningen's final departure from the yacht on achieving the rank of a full Admiral is described in some detail with the seating plan for a commemorative dinner, the passing of a 'Loving Cup' and a specially commissioned gift of a vase which is shown in a photograph tipped in. Altogether a fascinating document.

First and only edition of "the earliest comprehensive study on the history and theory of Ottoman architecture" (Ersoy, p. 117). Only a few copies of this rare work, produced to the most exacting standards of the day, appear to have been printed. It was produced under the patronage of Edhem Pasha, president of the Imperial Ottoman Commission for the Vienna Exhibition of 1873. The text (in German and French, followed by Turkish) consists of a series of monographs. The entire work was "prepared [...] by a diverse group of artists, architects, and bureaucrats who had close professional ties with the palace. The text begins with a lengthy historical overview that embodies a pioneering attempt to define and represent the entire Ottoman architectural past according to the norms of modern historiography [...] The editor of the whole volume, and the author of a substantial portion of the original text, was the amateur historian and artist Victor Marie de Launay, a 'naturalized' Frenchman who held a secretarial position in the Ministry of Trade and Public Works [...] With a keen scholarly interest in architecture, art, and traditional crafts, Marie de Launay, throughout his lengthy bureaucratic career in the imperial capital, was deeply involved in the representation of the Ottoman state in the world expositions [...] The expertly crafted plates that supplement the text of the 'Usul' include plans, elevations, and section of various Ottoman buildings as well as a rich panoply of decorative details and ornamental patterns, all meticulously depicted in accordance with the academic standards of the Beaux-Arts model [...] Accompanying the monochrome illustrations are fourteen chromolithographic plates (printed in the Sébah studios in Istanbul), skillfully drafted with vibrant and sharply delineated colors. In the superior technical quality and graphic precision of its illustrations, the 'Usul' is duly comparable to its highly acclaimed European counterparts, such as Owen Jones's 'The Grammar of Ornament' (London, 1956), Auguste Racinet's 'L'ornement polychrome' (Paris, 1869), or Jules Bourgoin's 'Les arts arabes' (Paris, 1873). Thus, leaving aside the intellectual scope of its text, the 'Usul' must be considered an artistic specimen in and of itself, conceived as a unique showcase of Ottoman technical competence in the art of publishing" (ibid., p. 117-120).       1873. Folio. 3 pp. Encre rouge, noire, et verte. Belle dissertation sur le retour de la piété en France et l'essor des pèlerinages au XIXème siècle, à travers laquelle on aperçoit les vives convictions religieuses de l'auteur lui même. Ce texte avait paru pour la première fois dans l'ouvrage posthume: Dernières Polémiques. Paris, chez Albert Savine, 1891. - "Les Pèlerinages / I / Qui donc disait que les questions religieuses n'étaient plus des questions & que l'esprit moderne, si supérieur à l'esprit du moyen âge les avait tuées et en avait jetté [sic] la cendre aux vents: ludibria ventis! Qui donc le disait? ... Tout le monde. Depuis le jour où Lamenais désespéré publiait son indifférence en matière de Religion jusqu'à l'heure de malheur suprême qui s'est abattue [mot biffé] sur la France, cette France, catholique comme elle était France, avait senti plus de quarante années, une de ces sécheresses de cœur que les mystiques connaissent et que les nations qui furent ferventes connaissent aussi. Certainement elle n'était pas encore athée jusqu'à la Moëlle, cette vieille France de Clovis. Mais l'Athéisme, ce dernier mot de toutes les philosophies impies, l'Athéisme, avec son instruction laïque & obligatoire, espérait bien qu'elle le deviendrait. Des livres, en effet, l'Athéisme était passé dans les faits. La Commune pour qui les prêtres n'étaient plus des hommes mais des soutanes (Rappelez vous le mot de Rigaud : Soutanes levez vous!) La Commune avait été le triomphe de l'Athéisme, car Robespierre lui-même, avec sa sotte fête de l'Etre suprême avait affirmé Dieu, et après la Commune ce n'était pas la sceptique voltairien qui menait la France qui était capable d'arrêter l'athéisme, qui au moins affirme quelque chose [...]".

      1873. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. An den Physiker Wilhelm von Beetz (1822-1886): "Lieber Freund! Nur um Sie nicht warten zu lassen, schreibe ich Ihnen sogleich, obwohl ich noch nicht erfahren konnte, was unser Sphygmagraph kostete, da unser Verwalter, der die Rechnung vor 7-8 J. bezahlte, heute nicht zur Hand war [...] Es ist nur für wissenschaftliche Zwecke und die Kliniken von Bedeutung. Sie werden Felix noch so viele Instrumente kaufen müssen, wenn Sie ihn tüchtig für die Praxis ausrüsten [...] Nun gehts mir aber wie dem Thier zwischen den Heubündeln. Soll ich den großen oder kleinen Apparat kaufen? Ich weiß nicht, ob der kleine für genauere Zu[c]kerbestimmungen bei diabetischem Harn ausreicht, dann würde es mir der Billigkeit wegen am besten conveniren [...] Lieber Beetz! mit dem fürchterlichen Gedanken, daß meine Frau demnächst Großmutter werden wird, während ich mich noch so jung fühle, schließe ich [...]". - Adolf Kußmaul promovierte in Würzburg über "Untersuchungen über den Einfluß, welchen die Blutströmung auf die Bewegungen der Iris und andere Teile des Kopfes ausübt", habilitierte sich kurz darauf in Heidelberg und wurde Professor der Inneren Medizin in Erlangen, Freiburg i. B. und schließlich in Straßburg. Die 1874 von ihm beobachtete "große Atmung" bei Diabetes wurde später nach ihm "Kußmaulsche Atmung" genannt. Als vielseitiger Wissenschaftler befaßte er sich mit verschiedenen Teilbereichen der Medizin und war darüber hinaus literarisch tätig (u. a. "Jugenderinnerungen eines alten Arztes", 1899). Mit Ludwig Eichrodt gemeinsam "schrieb er satirische Gedichte um den schwäbischen Schulmeister Gottlieb Biedermaier, die als 'Buch Biedermaier' in Gedichte in allerlei Humoren (1853) erschienen und den späteren Epochenbegriff 'Biedermeier' schufen" (DBE). - Gering fleckig und mit einem kleinen Einriß im unteren Mittelfalz.

      1873. Large folio. 4 vols. 110 ff., 74 blanks. With 218 collotype photograph views and portraits on 96 plates. Illustrated original cloth. All edges gilt. First edition of this monumental photographic work, recording the diversity of Chinese culture during the late 19th century in a wealth of views, portraits, and public scenes. The Scottish photographer John Thomson (1837-1921), a pioneer of photojournalism, was one of the first photographers to travel to the Far East, documenting the people, landscapes and artifacts of eastern cultures. After settling in Hong Kong in 1868 and establishing a studio there, Thomson spent four years travelling throughout China: he saw the southern trading port of Canton, the cities of Beijing and Shanghai, and the Great Wall, venturing deep into central China. He visited the Fukien region in 1870/71, travelling up the Min River by boat and proceeding to Amoy and Swatow. On the island of Formosa he visited the capital, Taiwanfu, before journeying on to the aboriginal villages on the west plains of the island. Three months were spent travelling 3000 miles up the Yangtze River to Hupeh and Szechuan. Thomson's travels in China were often perilous, as he visited remote, almost unpopulated regions far inland. Most of the people he encountered had never seen a westerner or camera before. Thomson had to transport a bulky wooden camera, many large, fragile glass plates, and potentially explosive chemicals. He photographed in a wide variety of conditions and often had to improvise because chemicals were difficult to acquire. His subject matter varied enormously: from humble beggars and street people to Mandarins, Princes and senior government officials; from remote monasteries to Imperial palaces; from simple rural villages to magnificent landscapes. - Many of the plates have German captions carefully pencilled in. Bindings professionally restored at extremeties, spines rebacked. Removed from the Geographical Institute of the University of Vienna, with their library stamp throughout and deaccession stamp to title pages. A fine set. Gernsheim 288f. OCLC 3384592.

      1873. 8vo (11 x 14 cm), ca. 130 leaves (and 11 blanks); some notes excised and the stubs used as support for pasted-in engravings and drawings. Contemp. wallet-style black morocco. A pocket-size album assembled by an artist studying human as well as animal proportions, basing his work on engravings of anatomy and of classical statues and figures. Apart from his manuscript notes on Darwin's "The expression of the emotions" and on "The proportions of the human figure", the album comprises 25 anatomical pen, ink and wash drawings (12 large and folding illustrations and 13 highly detailed sketches of body parts) as well as 14 pages of printed text and 48 plates from Pauquet's "Recueil d'anatomie portative a l'usage des artistes" (Paris, ca. 1850; including press-copied duplicates), many of which are heavily annotated and hand-coloured; 12 steel engravings of classical statues; 8 plates on the anatomy of the horse; with 2 further drawings and 1 engraving loosely inserted. - Rebacked, flap restored, endpapers renewed. Bookplate of the Marquesses of Rockingham (later Barons and Earls of Sondes) to front pastedown; dated ownership inscription of George Arthur Watson to bookplate and verso of front flyleaf. The ancient family of Watson had long been Baronets, Earls, and finally Marquesses of Rockingham, but the honours became extinct with the passing of Charles Watson-Wentworth in 1782. George Arthur Watson's connection could not be traced, though he may be the Edinburgh painter George Watson mentioned with an 1873 date by P. J. M. McEwan (Dictionary of Scottish art and architecture, Woodbridge 1994).

French ms. on vellum, calligraphed and illuminated by Léonie T(h)iersonnier. 88 pp. Contemporary calf on 5 raised bands with metal applications to front cover (allied coat of arms: Jacobe de Haut de Sigy and Thiersonnier). Leading edges gilt; inner dentelle richly gilt. All edges gilt, silk moirée endpapers. 2 metal clasps (slight defect to upper clasp). The present manuscript, painstakingly executed in the style of the late-mediaeval French Books of Hours, was a gift from Léonie Tiersonnier (née Ruffin) to her daughter Jeanne Clémence Guillemine Thiersonnier (1849-1936) on the occasion of her marriage to (Marie Auguste) Ambroise Jacobe de Haut de Sigy (1842-86) in the Paris church of St. Pierre de Chaillot on 6 August 1873. They were married by Théodore-Augustin Forcade (1816-85), the newly-installed Archbishop of Aix-en-Proivence. A 26-page Saints' calendar (captioned "Souvenirs") is followed by an elaborately designed 56-page missal, decorated throughout by initials (some raised in gilt), line infillings, and ornamental borders.

Seltenes Werk zur profanen mittelalterlichen Baukunst von Militär- und Zivilgebäuden. Aus dem Vorwort: "Trotz der Vorurteile, die einige gegenüber dem Mittelalter pflegen, ist es unmöglich, die glorreichen Erinnerungen aus der Toscana des XII und XIV Jahrhunderts zu verkennen." "Religiöse Bauten haben keinen Platz in unserer Arbeit gefunden, da die Häuser Gottes, aus der Sicht der Geschichte, kein archäologisches Interesse wecken. Sie alle scheinen einer gewissen Unveränderlichkeit zu unterliegen. Außerdem noch Gebäude aus Pistoia, Pise, Lucques, Sienne, San Gimignano, Volterra, Prato, Vico Pisano u.w. Alle "Kapitel" werden mit einem kurzen Text eingeleitet. Die wunderschönen Lithographien sind in einem guten Zustand, durch die Lagerung ist der Rand z.T. 1-10mm weit angebräunt oder leicht gedrückt. Die vorangestellten Seiten sind etwas angebräunt. Mit 2 kleinen Stempeln auf dem Titelblatt. Insgesamt nur mit wenigen und sehr blassen Stockflecken. Beide Bände sind vollständig, jedoch ohne die später, 1874 erschienenen zwei Textbände. Sprache: Französisch Gewicht in Gramm: 4000 Fachgerecht unter Verwendung der zeitgenössischen Mappen restauriert. Rote Rückenschildchen mit Goldschrift. 33x47 cm.
