Journal particulier commence a bord de la corvette l'Atalante a Noumea (Nle Caledonie) le 16 mai 1873. Fine le [...].

[On board], 16 May 1873 - 25 February 1882.. Folio. Manuscript written in a legible hand on laid paper, with each page, including the blanks, with a red line indicating the left margin. [2 blank], [262], [24 blank] pp. Contemporary green half suede, with chemical marbled sides, red sprinkled edges, and traces of wax on front and back.. Neat and legible French manuscript journal of several naval voyages on various ships, kept by Pierre Michelle Hippolyte Rouquette (1836-82). On one of the voyages, on the steamer Surcouf, Rouquette travels through the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf: "[October 18th, 1876] We see the land of Persia and Arabia. At noon we are only 40 miles from Muscat [... The 19th ...] We anchored in Muscat which is a very pretty bay full of forts and towers. [...] I found a French speaking Arabic whom we hire as an interpreter. When I make my visit to the Sultan, he is away, and I'm going to see the governor and the British Consul [... the 25th ...] we cross the Strait of Hormuz and we are entering the Persian Gulf. [28th] The coal taken from Muscat is poor and can barely stand the pressure [...] We continue our journey to Bushehr [...]" (transl. from the original French). - Rouquette starts as a ship-of-the-line lieutenant on the war steamer Atalante on a voyage to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, and ends as the frigate captain of the Kersaint, on a trip to Japan and the coasts of Korea and China. The journal was kept during nearly 9 years (1873-82) and gives in a brief and concise style not only the usual details concerning the weather and navigations, but also details of excursions ashore, official visits and personal correspondence. - Although the name of Rouquette is never mentioned, it is clear by the dates and the involved ships that Rouquette was the author of the journal. For example: the journal mentions on 18 December 1800 that the author received a letter telling that he was appointed as the commander of the Kersaint ("Je recois une lettre de Miot m'annoncant que je vais etre nomme au commandement du Kersaint"). - With the stationery's ticket of Papeterie Cabasson, likely the store where the original blank ledger was bought. Binding a bit rubbed, otherwise in very good condition.

Nouvelles Oeuvres Choisies De Mgr. Dupanloup. I. Oeuvres Oratoires / II. Defense de la Religion / III. Controverse sur L'Education des Filles / IV. Defense de Rome et du Saint-Siege / V. Oeuvres Pastorale / VI. Oeuvres Pastorale / VII. Oeuvres Pastorale.

Paris, E.Plon et Cie. / et chez Charles Douniol, 1873.. 8°. 602, 498, 501, 592, 462, 490, 480 pp. Edition Originale. Demi-chagrin. Tres bon etat.. Felix Antoine Philibert Dupanloup (January 3, 1802 - October 11, 1878) was a French ecclesiastic. He was born at Saint-Felix, in Haute-Savoie. In his earliest years he was confided to the care of his brother, a priest in the diocese of Chambery. In 1810 he was sent to a pensionnat ecclesiastique at Paris. Thence he went to the seminary of St Nicolas de Chardonnel in 1813, and was transferred to the seminary of St Sulpice at Paris in 1820. In 1825 he was ordained priest, and was appointed vicar of the Madeleine at Paris. For a time he was tutor to the Orleans princes. He became the founder of the celebrated academy at St Hyacinthe, and received a letter from Gregory XVI eulogizing his work there, and calling him Apostolus juventutis. He was elected to the French Academy in 1854, occupying the thirty-eighth chair, becoming leader of the Academy's "religious party", in which capacity he opposed the election of agnostic intellectuals. Dupanloup resigned in 1875 after Emile Littre, an agnostic, was elected to the Academy. His imposing height, his noble features, his brilliant eloquence, as well as his renown for zeal and charity, made him a prominent feature in French life for many years. Crowds of persons attended his addresses, on whom his energy, command of language, powerful voice and impassioned gestures made a profound impression. When made bishop of Orleans in 1849, he pronounced a fervid panegyric on Joan of Arc, which attracted attention in England as well as France. Joan of Arc would later be canonized, due partly to Dupanloup's efforts. Before this, he had been sent by Archbishop Aifre to Rome, and had been appointed Roman prelate and protonotary apostolic. For thirty years he remained a notable figure in France, doing his utmost to arouse his countrymen from religious indifference. He was a distinguished educationist who fought for the retention of the Latin classics in the schools and instituted the celebrated catechetical method of St Sulpice. Among his publications are De l'education (1850), De la haute education intellectuelle (3 vols., 1866), OEuvres choisies (1861, 4 vols.); Histoire de Jesus (1872), a counterblast to Renan's Vie de Jesus. In ecclesiastical policy his views were moderate. Both before and during the First Vatican Council, he opposed the definition of the dogma of papal infallibility as inopportune, but after the definition was among the first to accept the dogma. Dupanloup died on October 11, 1878, at the chateau of La Combe-de-Lancey.

Provenance: Latimer Clark.Ayrton, a pupil of Sir William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin), was a noted physicist, electrical engineer, inventor, and technical educator; his wife was the physicist Hertha Ayrton, best known for her investigations of the electric arc and of sand ripples.
