        Herodias Garzetta [Little Egret]

[London: by the Author, 1873. A beautiful image from John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain: "A magnificent work with life-like portraits of birds of the British Isles" (Wood) Gould's illustrations were all painstakingly coloured by hand, as he states in his Preface: "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however, is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand." Cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 102; cf. Nissen IVB 372; cf. Sauer 23; cf. Wood p. 365; cf. Zimmer p. 261. Hand-coloured lithograph by J.Wolf and H.C.Richter, printed by Walter.

The Eruption of Vesuvius in 1872.with Notes, and an Introductory Sketch on the Present State of Knowledge of Terrestrial Vulcanicity, the Cosmical Nature and Relations of Volcanoes and Earthquakes]

Asher & Co., London 1873 - London: Asher & Co., 1873. First Edition in English. Introductory sketch by Robert Mallet. Illustrated with 8 wood-engraved plates, one of them folding. 9 1/4" x 5 3/4", [4], 148. Three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine decorated in gilt, raised bands, red morocco labels, marbled endpapers, marbled page edges. Blindstamp of the Massachusetts State Library at title page, spine number inked in white. Rear cover loosened. Rubbing to covers with some extremity wear, still very good. Contents near fine, with no sign of foxing. More than half of the text - 78 pages - is taken by Mallet's intriguing introductory skecth, in which he recounts the state of science as it was at the time with regard to vulcanism and seismlogy. Palmieri's ensuing account is of the events of the 1872 Mount Vesuvius eruption, and is itself presented in a very scholarly fashion; the two were leading scientists of the era in the subject. The folding engraving is of Palmieri's ""sismografo elettro-magnetico", a Rube-Godlberg looking contraption which was of more than a little interest at the time; not correctly a seismograph in the modern sense [it did not inscribe inked graphs], it was rather a series of instruments intended to give the direction, intensity, and duration of an earthquake, and respond to both horizontal and vertical motions. The plates, as are all of the contents, are near fine. Extraordinarily rare. l-29n [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Larus Argentatus, Brunn (Herring Gull)

London 1873 - This splendid hand-colored, folio-size lithograph, Larus Argentatus, Brunn, from John Gould’s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds of Great Britain" is in very good condition with a light staining throughout, measures 14.75" x 21.25", and magnificently displays the author’s scientific skill and attention to detail. Commonly called European Herring Gulls, these large wading birds are illustrated mid-cry, the adult bird in the foreground and juvenile and the background. The adult bird has a white body and grey wings with black tail-feathers. The juvenile had a dark beak and spotted coloring on the body and wings. John Gould was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. His wife Elizabeth and other artists were able to transfer his sketches to stone; hand print and hand-color them. Gould was especially proud of this sumptuous work “Birds of Great Britain” (1862-1873) describing the volumes as a return to his old love of native birds. Unlike in earlier publications, however, the illustrations incorporate more nests, eggs, and young than the earlier works, with a focus on landscapes and family groupings. The ornithologist and his collaborators took more of an interest in creating accurate, appropriate settings, and included more plants and fully delineated environments, resulting in a number of lavish scenes of action and interaction. Gould's rightful pride in these illustrations was reflected in his preface explanation of their coloring: " every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were colored by hand; and when it is considered that nearly two hundred and eighty thousand illustrations in the present work have been so treated, it will most likely cause some astonishment to those who give the subject a thought." Gould's pride in “The Birds of Great Britain” was matched by its public success.

Harbours & Anchorages in the Red Sea

Published at the Admiralty, 11th June 1873. New editions to 1918. Small corrections to 1919., London, - Admiralty chart of the harbour's and Anchorages in the Red Sea 690 by 860mm. (27.25 by 33.75 inches). Nine engraved charts on one map sheet, detailing anchorages at Safaja Island, Akik Seghir, Mersa Halaib, Mersa Sheikh Ibrahim, Sherm Dumeigh, Hodeida Road, Approaches to Ras El Askar, Farisan I., and Eid Road, including tidal information, compass roses, soundings, seabed notations, currents, sandbanks, shoals, lighthouses and beacons, inland elevations, detailing and buildings. Detailed chart of the harbours and anchorages in the Red Sea.When the Suez Canal opened in 1869, the Red Sea began to experience a significant increase in the traffic, especially from the British shipping plying their trade between England and the India. The chart must have greatly aided their passage with its detailed depiction of nine safe harbours and archorages. The British Hydrographic Office was founded in 1795 by George III, who appointed Alexander Dalrymple as the first Hydrographer to the Admiralty. The first charts were produced in 1800. Unlike the U. S. Coast Survey the Hydrographic Office was given permission to sell charts to the public and they produced a great number of sea charts covering every corner of the globe. Most of the Admiralty charts produced by the Hydrographic Office delineated coastline as well as high and low water marks and record depth of water as established by soundings. In addition these charts included information on shoals, reefs, and other navigational hazards that plagued mariners across the world. Thanks to the innovations of Sir Francis Beaufort, who developed the Beaufort Scale of wind strength, the British Hydrographic Office became one of the leading producers of sea charts. In fact, such was their accuracy that the phrase 'Safe as an Admiralty Chart' was coined.

Viertes Stück: Richard Wagner in Bayreuth

Leipzig: E. W. Fritzsch [Strauss]; Schloss-Chemnitz: Ernst Schmeitzner [Schopenhauer & Wagner],, 1873-74-76. [bound after] … Erstes Stück: David Strauss der Bekenner und der Schriftsteller; … Drittes Stück: Schopenhauer als Erzieher. 3 pamphlets bound in one volume, octavo (217 × 138 mm). Contemporary brown sand-grain cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, covers decoratively blocked in blind, marbled edges, bookbinder's ticket of Hermann Rzebrziezek Jun, Graz. Bookplate of the Austrian composer and conductor Siegmund von Hausegger (1872-1948) dated 1906. Extremities lightly rubbed, endpapers a little browned, inner hinges cracked, Richard Wagner in Bayreuth printed in inferior paper stock and a little tanned as a result as always, still very good copies. First edition of Richard Wagner in Bayreuth, one of 700 first edition copies (the whole edition was 1,500, with 800 falsely marked "Zweite Auflage"), bound with two earlier pamphlets from Nietzsche's Unzeitgemässe Betrachtungen (Unconventional Observations), each separately published, the others with print-runs of 1,000 copies. Nietzsche originally conceived a series of thirteen essays. The first published was an attack on David Strauss, author of Des Leben Jesu (1835-6), and his latest book Der alte und der neue Glaube (The Old and the New Faith), to which Wagner had taken an immediate dislike. Wagner suggested Nietzsche publish the work with his own music publisher Fritzsch. Finding payment slow, Nietzsche switched publishers after the second work in the series, Vom Nutzen und Nachteil der Historie für das Leben (1874), the only one of these essays not centred on a specific person. His essay on Schopenhauer describes how the latter's genius, despite his admitted pessimism, might bring about a resurgence of German culture. It was the fourth work in the series, Richard Wagner in Bayreuth, that represented in some respects "the apex of Nietzsche's publishing career" (Schaberg). Nietzsche worked on it from August to October 1875, but at first decided that it should never be published. In April 1876 the composer Peter Gast (1854-1918; real name Heinrich Köselitz) read the piece and argued that it deserved publication. Nietzsche first agreed that Gast could make a fair copy to present to Wagner for his sixtieth-third birthday on 22 May, but then decided not to send it to Wagner, but instead to publish it to coincide with the upcoming premiere of the complete Ring cycle at Bayreuth. The book was published on 10 July 1876, about 90 copies being sold at the opening of the Bayreuth festival. Although well-received by Wagner and ostensibly strongly pro-Wagner in tone, the essay appeared at a pivotal point in Nietzsche's development and foreshadowed his eventual rejection of Wagner and all that he and Bayreuth stood for. The planning and publication of the Unzeitgemässe Betrachtungen series was quite haphazard, and affected by Fritzsch's financial difficulties, slow sales, and Nietzsche's loss of enthusiasm for the project. No more of the planned thirteen works appeared after the Wagner essay, though an uncompleted fifth essay was published posthumously. Schmeitzner negotiated to buy the remainders of the first two works from Fritzsch, but was disappointed to find them "very battered" and generally in poor condition, so that complete sets of all four essays, which were all originally issued in wrappers, are very rarely found bound together. This volume has excellent provenance, from the renowned contemporary Wagnerian Siegmund von Hausegger, who was born in Graz, where the volume was bound.

        Columba Livis, Temm (Rock Pidgeon)

London 1873 - This splendid hand-colored, folio-size lithograph "Columba Livis, Temm (Rock Pidgeon)", from John Gould’s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds of Great Britain" is in good condition with light foxing and staining throughout, measures 21.5" x 14.5", and magnificently displays the author’s scientific skill and attention to detail. Commonly called Rock Pigeons or Rock Doves, these birds are expertly hand-colored with gray bodies, green collars pink chests and black banded wings and tail feathers.         Map of California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona

San Francisco 1873 - A.L. Bancroft and Company “Map of California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona” San Francisco: 1873 Hand-colored steel-plate engraving folding map with leather cover 41 ½" x 46" framed Bancroft’s Map of California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona is exceptionally detailed; the folding map abounds with cartographic information, each county is brightly colored and town names, railways and roads are easily legible. Published in 1873 (this map was originally printed in 1864), this second edition allowed for geographical editions to be made to the original plates. The folding map’s portability meant that the map could be used in the field as a travel resource. The A.L. Bancroft Publishing Company was founded by Hubert Howe Bancroft. Born in Ohio in 1832, Bancroft worked for his brother in law’s publishing house in Buffalo, New York as a young man. In 1852, Bancroft headed west with the intention to start a West Coast branch for his brother-in law’s office. In 1856, the branch opened on San Francisco’s prosperous Montgomery Street and, by 1857, Bancroft had established a publishing house. Printing maps, law books, school texts and teaching guides, Bancroft’s firm would continue to grow and prosper. In 1860, due to the company’s success Bancroft named his brother, Albert Little or A.L., as a new partner. A.L. Bancroft and Company was formed. Bancroft was not only a successful businessman, but was also an avid collector. Starting in 1860, Bancroft began to collect works on the Pacific West. He hoped to write several historical volumes on western North American cultures, and their history. Most importantly, he aimed to include pioneer’s oral histories, termed “dictations,” and in doing so preserved numerous historical recollections that might have otherwise been lost. Bancroft succeeded in writing and publishing 39 volumes entitled History of the Pacific States of North America, also known as Bancroft’s Works. The first five volumes, The Native Races, were published from 1886-1890. Following volumes include treatises on the Northern Mexican States, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Despite the volumes success in selling over 6,000 copies, Bancroft’s firm encountered legal and financial difficulties, and the firm closed its doors in 1894. In 1905 Bancroft sold his collection of over 60,000 historical works to the University of California. Now complied at the Bancroft library at Berkeley which bears his name, the collections are an indispensable research tool for the early history of the West, from Alaska to Central America. Bancroft’s Map of California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona is in excellent condition and would make a fine addition to ones’ collection.

[ALBUM OF LANDSCAPE VIEWS OF THE WHITE MOUNTAINS, CONTAINING FIFTY-TWO TOTAL PENCIL DRAWINGS]

[N.p.] 1873-1875.. Fifty-two drawings, each mounted to a card leaf. Oblong folio. Contemporary morocco, expertly rebacked in matching style, spine gilt. Internally clean, edges of some cards lightly chipped. Contents fine. In a handsome box made of sassafras wood, cloth boards, leather spine. Finely executed landscapes by a skilled amateur, from an important center of 19th- century American landscape painting. There are forty views of the White Mountains, mostly centered at Glen House near North Conway, New Hampshire. The area was long established as an attraction for artists both major and minor, and the many works generated there constitute a distinct chapter in the history of Hudson River School painting. In the summer, Glen House, Kearsarge House, and other grand hotels in the area were both centers of artistic activity and fashionable retreats for wealthy city dwellers. The artist of the present body of work, H.C. Van Post, was a New York businessman who summered with his family in North Conway. He was clearly a trained draughtsman with genuine talent. His delicate, austere, and finely detailed drawings are each titled and dated, and show long views from mountain tops, townscapes, Saco River scenes, and views of Glen House from different angles. The White Mountain series is followed by drawings of equal quality of the Delaware Water Gap and upstate New York scenery.

Great sickle-billed Bird of Paradise, Plume bird or Great promerops] Epimachus speciosus

[London 1873 - A magnificent image of the largest and most remarkable of the thin-billed Birds of Paradise, painted by Joseph Wolf, who was 'without exception, the best all-round animal artist who ever lived' (Sir Edwin Landseer). From Elliot's great work on the 'Birds of Paradise', which includes some of the most highly praised bird illustrations ever produced. Ornithological illustration reached its height during the golden age of lithography, and this image is from that great era. Even today, with all of the excellent methods of colour reproduction available, the beauty of hand-colouring cannot be equalled. Joseph Wolf is pre-eminent amongst the ornithological artists of the day: he was the first bird artist to fully understand and use the new freedom of style that lithography allowed. The lithographic crayon suited Wolf's drawing style, transforming his soft expressive lines and subtle suggestions of movement into a printable image. His work set a new standard in life-like representations and Wolf's skill at capturing the essential character of his subjects also breathed life into the stiff "bird on a perch" portrayals so characteristic of bird art of the day. The plates in Elliot's Monograph of the. Birds of Paradise , 'almost as magnificent as the birds they portray, were the fruits of Elliot's considerable wealth, Wolf's great artistry and both men's profound knowledge and love of birds' (Dance). Elliot writes in the preface `The drawings of Mr. Wolf will, I am sure, receive the admiration of those who see them; for, like all that artist's productions, they cannot be surpassed, if equalled, at the present time. Mr. J. Smit has lithographed the drawings with his usual conscientious fidelity, and in his share of the work has left me nothing to desire. In the coloring of the plates Mr. J.D. White has faithfully followed the originals; and in the difficult portions where it was necessary to produce the metallic hues, he has been very successful'. Cf. Anker 131; cf. Dance, The Art of Natural History , 1978, p.132; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990) p. 95; cf. Nissen IVB 296; cf. Wood p. 331; cf. Zimmer p. 207. Lithograph by J. Smit after Joseph Wolf, hand-coloured by J.D. White, heightened with gum arabic. (1 1/2 inch repaired tear to left margin).

Hall (circa 1820-1901), the U.S. Consul at Matanzas (1864-73), U.S. Consul General at Havana (1873-77), and U.S. Minister at Costa Rica, Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (1882-89). Highlights --------- 1). Document measuring 14 x 20 inches, with State Department raised seal, appointing Hall as the temporary U.S. Vice-Consul at Havana; dated March 1869; signed by Secretary of State William H. Seward. 2). Document measuring 15 x 20 inches, with Executive Department raised seal, appointing Hall as the U.S. Consul General at Havana; dated November 7, 1873; signed by President Ulysses S. Grant and Secretary of State Hamilton Fish. 3). Document measuring 12 x 24 inches (both sides), with state Department raised seal, appointing Hall as U.S. Minister to the "Central American States"; dated May 9, 1882; signed by Secretary of State Frederick T. Frelinghuysen. 4). Document measuring 14 x 22 inches, testimonial acknowledging Hall's efforts at defusing the "recent political crisis" in Guatemala through his "wise and beneficent counsels," thereby sparing "us from anarchy and bloodshed, which the whole Republic so very narrowly escaped"; dated April 18, 1885; signed by 70 leading Guatemalans ------------- Footnote: President Grant conferred upon Hall the position of Consul General at Havana on November 7, 1873, the day that Spanish authorities in Cuba shocked Americans by executing 53 crew and passengers of the "Virginius," a vessel caught off the island trying to supply insurgents while falsely flying the U.S. flag. Grant, Secretary Fish, and Hall spent a difficult month balancing public demands for retribution with the knowledge that the "Virginius" had limited grounds for legal protection. Before passions cooled, most Washington lawmakers had shied away from action, causing Grant to quip "if Spain were to send a fleet into the harbor of New York, and bombard the city, the Senate might pass a resolution of regret that they had had cause for so doing, and offer to pay them for the expense of coming over and doing it."         Map of the States of California and Nevada

Warren Holt, No. 607 Clay Street, San Francisco, California 1873 - Warren Holt after Chas. Grayton Gibbes, C.E, 1873. Map of the States of California and Nevada, Carefully Compiled from the Latest Authentic Sources comprising Information Obtained from the U.S. Coast and Land Surveys, by Prof. J. D. Whitney; Railroad Surveys and the results of explorations made by Brevet. Lieut. Col. R. S. Williamson, U.S.A., Henry De Groot, C. D. Gibbes, and others. Scale 18 Miles to One Inch. Published by Warren Holt, No. 607 Clay Street, San Francisco, California. Hand-colored lithograph with leather map cover. Paper size: 37 ½” x 39”. Condition: As with folding pocket maps of the time it is on thin paper. This particular map, however, is extraordinary in that there are no tears in the thin paper and the leather cover is still attached. A rare, beautiful, and significant map in uncommonly excellent condition. This large, folding pocket map of California and Nevada is by the civil engineer, Charles Drayton Gibbes. This map of the late nineteenth century is exceptional for having been hand colored with watercolor. The map includes the results of the important work of Josiah Dwight Whitney, Director of the California Geological Survey. The map of California and Nevada by Whitney, the first wide-ranging scientific survey of the region authorized and funded by the State Legislature, was produced in 1873, the same year as this map by Chas. Drayton Gibbes. The Gibbes map may be the first, after the State approved map, to include the significant results of Whitney's scientific surveys. Whitney, a graduate of Yale who studied in Europe, was greatly influenced by Charles Lyell, Alexander von Humboldt, and Carl Ritter, the founders of modern geology, geography, and earth science. Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous forty-eight states, was named after Josiah D. Whitney. The reference to R. S. Williamson is to his exploration of routes between California and Oregon, and across the Sierra Nevada from the upper Sacramento River to the Humboldt River for proposed railroad routes. Gibbes also used information from the Henry de Groot surveys of Nevada and Eastern California that were published in a map by Warren Holt in 1863. Over one-thousand place-names of cities, towns, mountains, missions, springs, routes, rivers, etc., are given on this beautifully hand-colored and rare early map of California and Nevada. The Gibbes map identifies by hand-applied color the following important features: railroads proposed; railroads built; gold; silver; copper; quick silver (note: quicksilver or mercury was important in gold mining and processing); tin; coal; oil springs (the future petroleum industry?); county seats; posts occupied by troops; townships subdivided; and the 10, 20 & 30 mile limits of the Central Pacific, Southern Pacific, and six other railroads. The eleven United States land Offices are identified.
