DARWIN, CHARLES
London: John Murray, 1872. First Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, OF THE FINAL WORK OF THE TRILOGY ON EVOLUTION THAT INCLUDED THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES AND THE DESCENT OF MAN. Expression of Emotions is Darwin's most approachable and delightful work. Darwin's wife Emma, obviously relieved that the book would not once again make her husband a lightning-rod for attacks by theologians, said "I don't think it is a book to affront anybody." And indeed "[i]t turned out the most successful and readable book [Darwin] had produced up to that point, selling some nine thousand copies in the first four months, many more than the Origin of Species had done in a similar span" (Janet Browne, Charles Darwin: The Power of Place: Volume II of a Biography). Nevertheless, the work has an important place in the development of Darwin's evolutionary theories, since he regarded the the data he had collected as important proof of the continuity between humans and animals. It is also a pioneering example of the use of photography in scientific writing.Darwin had long been interested in the ways in which people and animals express emotion, and he had been collecting data on the subject since the 1830s. "In the summer of 1838 ... Darwin was keeping a private notebook on the expression of emotion. Bound in red leather, marked M and 'Expression,' it was succeeded in the autumn by a red-rust notebook N, also marked 'Expression' and 'private.' These were pivotal months for Darwin. As he filled up the M and N books he was also gathering data on the transmutation of spec … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beautifully illustrated with 70 fine engravings and portraits. 1872 scarce first edition! A monumental book on Slavery in America. The book itself is in very good condition considering its age and rarity. The most notable damage to the book is a stain on the frontispiece, a water stain that affects a small portion of pages & illustrations near the rear of the book (please see pictures), a small tear on page 460 which is due to the page still being partially uncut, and a piece torn off of page 429 (does not affect text). 1872. Thank you for looking. This listing is for an antique Antiphony Song Chant book printed in 1872 in Latin during the time of Pope Pius IX. It is leather bound with brass fittings. It is a large book that is 21 inches long. 15 inches wide and 3 inches thick and weighs about 25 pounds. We are not experts, but in our opinion it is in good to very good condition. The inside cover shows some wear. The binding is separating a bit at the top on the front. There is slight separation of the pages from the binding at the back. The binding can be tightened and repaired. I shared pictures of the book with a retired priest I have know for better than forty years. He says such a large book would indicate that it would have been used by several monks reading from the same book at Mass and is why the book had large print. This book has 504 pages. He points out that printing books of any size in the 1800's was expensive. All our items are sold "as is". See all photos. Use the Zoom Tool to see all details. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. We do our best to answer promptly and accurately. We accept Paypal and payments should be made within 24-hours of end of auction. Because of what this item is and its value, we will have it professionally packed for shipping to insure that this item arrives in the same condition that it was in when we ship it. We have added a $30 handling fee to cover the professional packing and insurance. Thanks for looking!

Jules Verne
1872 British First Edition with 52 illustrations by Riou, original pictorial cloth titled and decorated in gilt, the True English First Edition dated MDCCCLXXII, interestingly the only time a British Jules Verne book was dated in Roman Numerals, the book was published for the Christmas market in November 1871 and post-dated 1872, the British publication in the original binding is by far one of the toughest Verne titles to find in First Edition form, one of the reasons may have been the high cost of the book which was reportedly priced at £7.00 on its release, a sum that would have been well beyond the pockets of most people of the time. Another interesting point, the First Edition uses the plate "The Descent of the Crater" as the frontispiece, whereas later Griffith & Farran editions use "The Central Sea" as the frontispiece, the reason I point this out is that when you check the pagination of the Griffith & Farran editions you will see that the text pages are numbered but not the plates, with the plates being counted in with the pagination, because "The Descent of the Crater" is normally counted as pages 121/122 you will see a break in the pagination in this copy where that plate has been used as the frontispiece, also when you check for "The Central Sea" plate in this copy you will find it located between pages 216/217 with no break in the pagination for the plate, this is the second copy of the First Edition where I have seen "The Descent of the Crater" used as the Frontispiece. Regarding the condition of this copy, apart from some minor marks to the rear board, mild … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Lloyd Garrison, Joseph Mazzini
New York: 1872. JOSEPH MAZZINI: His Life, Writings, and Political Priniciples Famous American abolitionist and newpaperman William Lloyd Garrison provided a 26-page introduction to this 1872 book of writings by the Italian politician/journalist/activist, a good friend of Garrison's who had passed away earlier in the year. This is one of only three books containing Garrison's writing to be published in his lifetime. This first edition copy is signed and inscribed by Garrison on the second page, dated January 1st, 1874. The congratulatory inscription is to his neighbor, Samuel C. Cobb, who had recently been elected mayor of Boston, an office he would hold for three consecutive terms. The book is well-preserved for its many years. The covers have minor handling; the binding softening slightly but is still sound; there is a tiny vintage bookstore label inside each cover, otherwise no significant flaw internally. An uncommon first, but of course the value is in the extremely rare inscription. Letters by William Lloyd Garrision are not too uncommon, but this is the only inscribed book by him currently available online. The book measures 5.25" X 7.5", xxxii + 366 pages. The photo of Garrision does not appear in the book. Ships promptly & securely. [Attributes: First Edition]

Moran, Edward
Philadelphia: Privately Printed, 1872. Softcover. VG-, chipping to covers one small tear at top through previous owner name. Printed wraps. 72 small original lithographs on 18 pp, preceded by text and list of pictures offered. An exceedingly rare item published by the author. Comprised of 72 small stone lithographic reproductions of studio paintings by the author / illustrator. These pictures had previously been dispersed at a public sale (1871). This small remembrance of the paintings in that sale, created from drawings he had made of each of the paintings prior to the auction, is extremely elusive.

Ferguson 17214. Interesting study on the indigenous races of Australia, written by the physician and anthropologist Paul Topinard (1830-1911). It was presented on 15 February 1872 to the Société d'anthropologie, in the name of the Commission permanente pour l'Océanie. ''This elaborate memoir will be read with great pleasure by all who take an interest in the aborigines of Australia. The most important [of Topinard's conclusions] concern the typical differences presented by a comparison of the aborigines among themselves, and those which relate to their connection with other races'' (C.S.W.). Hans Christian Andersen
1872. Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen, Illus Eleanor Vere Boyle, Samson Low, Marston, Low and Searle, 1872Key feature: The illustrations are truly outstanding in quality and vbrancy About the book: For sale is one of the most sought-after fairy tales books ever printed. This is the remarkable Eleanor Vere Boyle edition, with twelve Victorian chromolithographic plates. The highly ornate covers are truly mesmerising, as are the vibrant illustrations inside. These paved the way for later illustrators such as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. This is a quality copy, with a lot of investment put into the restoration to ensure this will last another 100+ years. On Abebooks, the cheapest copy is priced at £750 and is missing a plate. My copy is complete and an excellent opportunity. Offers considered. Condition report: In Good Condition See photos for accurate description. Book has been recased and restored, with original front and rear cover relaid Spine left plain and undecorated New bright endpapers and binding strong Frontispiece is pulling, with some looseness to lower inside edge Generally good inside - complete with all illustrations and tissue guards. All plates are good+ or better, with no restoration. A few text pages have some edge restoration but overall a largely good copy. Butler, Samuel
London: Trübner & Co., 1872. London: Trübner & Co., 1872.. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [1] 2-246 [247-248: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original bevel-edged brown cloth, front and rear panels stamped in black, spine panel stamped in black and gold, top and fore-edges untrimmed, brown coated endpapers. First edition. Butler's first novel, first published at his own expense in 1872. A classic utopian satire that "probed to the heart of modern society, and he may well have written what one critic has called 'the first modern utopian romance.' Certainly, it is one of the most successful of the anti-technological utopias." - Lewis, Utopian Literature, pp. 33-5. EREWHON (1872) and its sequel EREWHON REVISITED (1901) "are set in a New Zealand utopia where machines have been banned for many years, because (in harsh parody of Darwin's theory of evolution, which Butler disliked) of human fears that machines, in their rapid evolutionary progress, would soon supplant Man. The visitor to this utopia -- which mixes dystopian elements freely with its more attractive aspects -- is named Higgs, and his eventual escape from Erewhon in a balloon triggers a new religion in that country, Sunchildism. The sequel is devoted mainly to this faith and Higgs's effect upon it on his return, in an allegorical satire on Christianity's origins and growth of the legend of the Second Coming." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 181. Aldiss and Wingrove, Trillion Year Spree, pp. 92-4. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-33; (1981) 1-34; (1987) 1-19; (1995) 1-19; … [Click Below for Full Description]
