The main journal volume consists of approximately 196 manuscript pages of Haynes's writings and notes, most dating from 1866-72, and include a few earlier and later entries. The two accompanying scrapbooks consist of about 100 and 75 pages respectively, most with newspaper articles pasted on both sides of each sheet. Some articles have manuscript notes by Haynes; both of the scrapbook ledgers were also used by Haynes to write letter drafts and keep financial accounts from the 1860s through the early 1880s. Most of the articles are contemporary Reconstruction related political speeches and commentaries, including, for example, George William Curtis's speech on "Woman Suffrage" at the New York Constitutional Convention. Although not much is known about Haynes, he was about 20 in 1868 (as noted below), and he is record … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Franco-Prussian War)
1872. 104 numbered leaves; written in in on folded sheets, with text on right-hand side, notes and corrections on left. With numerous corrections and deletions. 1 vols. Oblong 8vo (6 x 8 inches0. Fine. 104 numbered leaves; written in in on folded sheets, with text on right-hand side, notes and corrections on left. With numerous corrections and deletions. 1 vols. Oblong 8vo (6 x 8 inches0. A very early and well-written analysis by an amateur historian*, shortly afer the cessation of hostilities. The author begins: "It is but a few months since Europe saw the end of a struggle of which history affords so example. There have been fiercer battles fought, larger territories involved in the conflict, but never was there witnessed a more futile pretext for war, blind imprudence in the aggressor, or more consummate generalship & complete success on the opposite side ..." *Possibly by an American, given references to Abraham Lincoln, the American Revolution, "the freest nation in the world", etc). A good candidatate might possibly be Henry Percy Litchfield (see OCLC 10644238), of Long Island, whose papers are in George Washington U with the Litchfield family papers, and whose privately printed book THE FRANCO-GERMAN WAR OF 1870 (Gracehill, Brooklyn, L.I., 1872) was among the earliest studies of the war.

PERONA, Vito.
Oil on wood, 42 x 60 cm. Un libro dedicato all'artista Vito Perona. [Click Below for Full Description]

DARWIN, Charles.
London: John Murray, 1872. Octavo. Original green ribbed-grain cloth, titles to spine gilt, frames and central vignette blocked in blind to covers, brown coated endpapers. Ownership inscription to head of title page. Minor rubbing to extremities, top edge dust toned, small chip to front free endpaper, faint foxing to edges; an excellent, bright copy. Folding diagram facing page 90. Sixth edition, second issue, printed simultaneously with the first issue, which is marked as the "eleventh thousand" on the title page. Darwin continually made revisions to his text; this edition featuring a new chapter, chapter VII, and a glossary by W. S. Dallas. "The edition was aimed at a wider public and printed in smaller type . giving the general impression of a cheap edition, which at 7s. 6d, it was". It is also the first edition of The Origin of Species to feature the word "evolution"; the term was first used by Darwin in The Descent of Man, published in 1871. Freeman notes that the second issue is "notably less common"; two copies have been traced at auction. Freedman 392.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Marx, Karl.
1872. 8vo. XIII, (3), 678 pp. Contemporary half calf with gilt title to spine. First edition in Russian, the first translation to any language of "Das Kapital". Because of the unexpected popularity of the book, and the subsequent ban in the 1890s, this edition of 3000 copies was soon exhausted and the book became very rare. Later, Marx noted the excellence of the Russian translation. In 1880, he wrote to F. Zorge saying that of all countries, the "Capital" had been read and appreciated most fully in Russia. - Spine somewhat rubbed; occasional light brownstaining to interior. Handwritten ownership of Aleksander Winawer on flyleaf; stamp of A. Malkis on title page. Marx-Engels Erstdrucke, p. 33. Cf. PMM 359.
