History and General Description of New France. Translated, with Notes, by John Gilmary Shea.

New York. John Gilmary Shea. 1866-1872. - 4to., 28cm, in 6 volumes, The First Edition in English, limited to 250 sets, with 18 maps, 15 plates & 4 facsimiles, rubricated title pages, in the original half dark brown morocco, blind decorated raised bands, gilt titles, marbled boards and endpapers, blind ruled borders on the boards, internal perforation & blind library stamps, some wear stops on the centre on the boards and some slight wear on the board edges, institutional bookplates on the front paste down endpaper, otherwise a very good to fine sound clean set. (cgc) T.P.L. 189 Howes C-307. Sabin 12135. Field 282. Originally published in French in 1744 in three 4to volumes and later the same year reprinted in six 12mo volumes."The principal work of this great Jesuit traveller and historian and the pre-eminent authority on the French period of the west." Howes. "This work is one of the best authorities concerning various Indian tribes, some of which no longer exist." Lande. Charlevoix's account has a number of advantages - he was familiar with the land and had a feel for the story he was trying to tell; he was able to gather oral testimony which leavened the dry recitation of facts and figures; and he had access to the official archives of France. Includes important material relating to the French in the Mississippi Valley. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Jahrhunderts in Deutschland.

Cuba, 1872. Folio. Single sheets. Minor worming, offsetting. Very good. A group of interesting documents, all bearing official stamps, documenting the sale or liberation of various slaves from 1842-72. The slaves are described by name, age, and as either "negro," "mulato," or "criolla." Though Cuba ended its participation in the slave trade in 1867, it was not until 1886 that slavery was finally abolished by royal decree. An interesting collection showing the persistent nature of Cuban slave culture in the latter half of the 19th century.

        Walt Whitman's Books (promotional poster)

Washington, D.C., 1872. Spectacular oversized advertising poster designed by Walt Whitman for distribution to booksellers, an artifact reflecting both his printing background and his promotional energy. The primary headlines read: "Walt Whitman's / BOOKS / LEAVES OF GRASS / DEMOCRATIC VISTAS / AFTER ALL NOT TO CREATE ONLY / AS A STRONG BIRD ON PINIONS FREE / ALSO, JOHN BURROUGHS' 'NOTES ON WALT WHITMAN AS POET AND PERSON.'" Detailed descriptions and prices are given in smaller type for each book. Whitman was a tireless promoter of his work and image: "despite his seeming self-confidence (colossal egoism, some have said) and his unlimited faith in a democratic society in which all are equal, Whitman engaged in a lifelong manipulation of the public and posterity through an unrelenting publicity campaign. . . . He left nothing to chance" (E.H. Miller). The final book advertised on the poster, Notes on Walt Whitman as Poet and Person by John Burroughs, was effectively ghostwritten by Whitman. This example was one of the cache of "perfect" unused posters discovered in 1954, and distributed to libraries by legendary Whitman collector Charles Feinberg, as described by William White in "A Walt Whitman Poster" (The American Book Collector, X:3, November 1959). OCLC locates sixteen institutional copies of the poster, at least two of which, Texas and Virginia, were also gifts of Feinberg. A fine copy of an unlikely survival. Promotional poster, measuring 29.5 by 24 inches, bordered in black and printed in various metal and wooden types, headed by Walt Whitman's oversized "signature." Lightest toning to edges.

The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals.

London: John Murray,, 1872. With photographic and other illustrations. Octavo. Original dark green cloth, titles to spine gilt, simple blind panels to covers, fore edge untrimmed, black coated endpapers. Housed in a custom cloth-lined slipcase. 7 heliotype plates, 3 folding; woodcut illustrations to the letterpress, many full page. Spine gently rolled with very light rubbing to extremities and a minute nick to headcap, tips lightly bumped, front cover with a couple of pale markings and a short (10 mm) split to cloth along blind rule at upper outer corner, internally a little foxing to versos of plates with images unaffected, the very occasional small spot to margins. An excellent copy with an unfaded spine, a nice example of the original cloth. First edition, second issue as usual with the misprint "htat" on the first line of p. 208, the plates in early state, numbered in arabic rather than roman. Expression of the Emotions completed Darwin's great cycle of evolutionary writings, "written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment" (Freeman), a subject originally intended for the Descent of Man. Darwin invited the photographer Oscar Rejlander to make comparative studies of laughter and crying, obtained photographs of lunatics from asylum director James Crichton-Browne and consulted the French physiologist Guillaume Duchenne regarding his electrical research on the facial muscles. The plates are among the earliest commercially reproduced photographs in a printed book.

Vernon E. Duroe's Photographs of New York City and Upstate New York, together with Photographs of the Duroe Family

[New York]. [circa 1860s - 1950s]. A large collection upwards of 1200 black and white photographs, the bulk of which were taken by the Brooklyn-based photographer and teacher, Vernon Everett Duroe. Born in 1872 on the family farm in Norwich, New York, Duroe developed an early interest in both portrait and landscape photography, and was an active member of the photography department at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. This collection of his prints divides roughly into three parts: fine art photographs (some of which were published in the early 1920s); landscape and architectural studies; and family snapshots and portraits. Most range in size from 5" x 7" to 11" x 14", with several hundred smaller size images. Included are gelatin silver, platinum, albumen, and matte collodion prints, several of which are identical images printed in variant tones and sizes. Also included are a few tintypes, cartes de visites, etc., and several dozen cabinet cards. Most of the prints in the collection are loose, with about a quarter mounted (on original commercially produced cardboard mounts or Duroe's custom-made mounts, or in folded paper portfolios). With few exceptions, most prints are undated and unmarked. Overall very good or better, with some light to moderate curling among some of the loose prints. A detailed list of the photographs is available upon request. .

Numerous illus. in the text (one double-page & in color). 28; 42 folding leaves. Two vols. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title label on upper covers, modern stitching. Tokyo: 1872. First edition of this rare work, one of the two earliest books to introduce Western cooking techniques and recipes into Japan (the other is Kanagaki's Seiyo Ryoritsu, published in the same year). Both were written for the purpose of improving the nutrition of the Japanese. Vol. I describes Western cooking utensils including ovens, pots and saute pans, pans to poach fish, tableware, how to fold napkins, glasses, carving knives, decanters, serving dishes, candelabras, gravy boats, etc. Vol. II provides recipes divided by their ingredients: fish, meat, vegetables, and desserts. This is the first work to include the recipe for the beloved "curry and rice" which is still so popular in Japan. The illustrations depict the cooking utensils mentioned above. The double-page colored illustration shows four Japanese men at a Western-style dining table, being served Western foods by a woman. The four men and the woman are all dressed in Western-style clothes. Fine copy. .

London & Boston: W. M. Thompson / Roberts Brothers, 1872. First Edition. Hardcover. Some chipping and staining to the text with some paper restoration not affecting the text; the plates are fine and bright. Fading and light wear to the covers. Very Good and scarce. Oblong folio (16-3/4" x 13-1/2") neatly rebound in the publisher's decorated beveled cloth, all edges gilt, with individual leaves tied together archivally with tissue and sewn. Illustrated with 12 lovely mounted chromolithographed views of the mountainous coast of Norway including Christiania, The Island of Torghatten, The Lofoten Islands From the Vest Fjord, The Raftsund, Glaciers Near Nus Fjord, Hammerfest, Vaagekallen, The Fondalen Glaciers, The Hestmann, Hornelen, Bergen, and Langaardsund near Kagero. The only edition of this beautifully illustrated book. Laid in is a copy of an 1871 advertisement with several press releases including this from the TIMES: "This standard is fully attained by most of the views in the Coast of Norway, by Elijah Walton.... In the majority a bold and original treatment on the part of the lithographer, as well as the artist, has been singularly successful. Huge snowy mountains uprearing themselves against a sky deeply blue, or brilliant and tender with sunset, or grey with gathering clouds, are Mr. Walton's favorite subjects, and his lithographer has contrived to render his originals so well that several of the pictures might at a short distance be mistaken for water-color drawings.

        Picturesque America

Appleton, 1872, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good Condition, Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket, First Edition. BRYANT, WILLIAM CULLEN [editor]. Picturesque America or The Land We Live In, New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1872-74. Folios, first edition, pp. viii, 568; vi, 576, brown pebbled cloth boards half-bound in brown morocco, gilt lettering and blind-stamped decoration to spines, which have four raised bands, gilt lettering and image of artist's easel to fronts, all edges gilt, former owner's ID embossed to endpages. Profusely illustrated with wood and steel engravings in text and on 49 plates. This work was issued in 48 parts over two years, and subscribers were invited to have all parts bound into two volumes, as is the case here. Illustration is good, bad, and indifferent, but what Bryant lacked in quality he made up for in quantity. There is a huge number of images here, especially considering that American book illustration was only beginning to come into its own during this era. The illustrations show a post-Civil War America on the upswing, with an emphasis on scenery and industrial cities. This was one of the most elaborate and influential of the post-Civil War American illustrated books. Percy Muir, in "Victorian Illustrated Books" (Portman), says F.O.C. Darley, the star illustrator here, became nationally famous for his American themes and was without peer in his field, although he later fell into oblivion (p. 256). Also see Sabin 62692 and BAL 1732. Condition of these books: Boards rubbed at extremities. Generally clean, tight, scattered light foxing, staining in margins. Overall very good and sound. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). 2-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; United States; 19th century; Art & Design. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 52979.
