[Attributes: Hard Cover]

1872 - ADDISON, Joseph. The Spectator: with a Historical and Biographical Preface by A. Chalmers. Boston: Little, Brown, 1872. Eight volumes. 12mo, contemporary three-quarter polished tan calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt. $1500.Late 19th-century collected edition of Joseph Addison's seminal periodical, with engraved frontispiece portraits in the first two volumes.Presenting essays by Addison, Richard Steele, Alexander Pope, Thomas Tickell and others, The Spectator, originally published 1711-14, "appeared daily, and was immensely popular, particularly with the new growing middle-class readership". The papers are mainly concerned with manners, morals, and literature. Their object is "˜to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality" (Drabble, 925-6). Addison helped set the pattern and establish the vogue for the periodical in the 18th-century, and cultivated a receptive audience for the emerging art form of the novel. "The Spectator made a mark in English literature, and fixed a form which was adopted with servile fidelity by many succeeding periodicals till the end of the century" (DNB).         A grouping of 21 Letters and Writings of U.S. Senator Daniel W. Voorhees (1872-1893)

A grouping of 21 Letters and Writings of U.S. Senator Daniel W. Voorhees (1872-1893). A grouping of 20 letters and Correspondence, from the 1870s through most of the 1890s, from Senator Daniel W. Voorhees (1827-97), of Indiana, to John Ewing Risley, his old friend from Terre Haute, Indiana, a fellow attorney who was married to Voorhees?s sister Mary, who later became a prominent attorney in New York and who was appointed as the United States Minister to Denmark in the early 1890s (1893-97). The letters include seven written just after Voorhees lost a bid for re-election to Congress from Indiana in the 1870s, and re-entered the practice of law. Another group of letters was written in the mid-1890s, during the time Voorhees was United States Senator, and was an important member of the Finance Committee during times of Tariff legislation, and also while he was a champion of the creation of the Library of Congress. The latter grouping of letters are written on Senate stationery, and were sent to Risley during the latter?s time in Copenhagen. All of the letters are of a deeply personal nature, and many contain personal feelings, as well as deeply held political positions. The two were evidently close personally and in business. They were partners in Clay County, Indiana, under the name of Voorhees and Risley when practicing law from 1860-1863. Voorhees was representing Risley in some of his cases. Rich in content. Additionally, this offering includes six (6) published speeches of Daniel W. Voorhees between 1859-1895. A brief summation follows 1872-1873 Seven (7) letters from Voorhees while he was serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for Indiana?s 6th district. All letters are to John E. Risley, except one that is to Voorhees? sister (most likely Mary Caroline, the wife of Risley). ? The first letter refers to economic difficulties in the country. The Panic of 1873 and the depression associated with it can be seen in the writings, ?there is scare a dollar in circulation here? and ?I was fully prepared for the general crash when it came.? ? The second letter, to his sister, discusses the health problems of Hallie (probably D.W. V.?s daughter Harriet), ?Her health & life are so much dearer to me than my own that I would willingly die that she might be well.? ? Other letters are to Risley and refer to his failed election (House of Representatives re-election). His focus on business is clear when he says he tends to ?read, talk, dream law.? He discusses business cards and his desire for Risley to be produced in Risley?s taste. He talks of a new partner in the practice and compares the qualities he values in a man to that of a courageous bull dog. ? Other topics include family, health (his physical and mental depression), and work. 1891-1897 The collection contains 13 letters from Senator Voorhees while Risley was serving as U.S. Minister to Denmark from 1893-1897. Voorhees was serving as U.S. Senator and member of the Finance Committee during which were clashes regarding the Tariff legislation. The letters are of a sincerely intimate nature, and contain personal feelings, as well as deeply held political positions. One envelope has Risley?s note that it contained the last letter he received from Voorhees. It is dated February 26, 1897. In it he tells of his plans for the future and reflects on the state of affairs in the country. Voorhees left office on March 3 of that year, and died the next month, on April 10. The letters are honest and eloquent, as Voorhees was a leading orator of his time. In addition to political insight, there are matters of business, family, health, and affection. There are many years, the 1880s for instance, where there are no letters. They were both in the U.S. at the time, and, perhaps, were seeing more of one another. What is in the letters however, provides readers with a good picture of the nature of the Senator, his feelings about many notables of the day, and his brotherly love for Risley. Voorhees discusses shared friends, specifically Miss Burgoyne, and enemies, his interest in Risley?s encounters with the Royal Danish family, he concerns himself with Risley?s health and discusses his own rheumatoid trouble. At length is talk of tariffs, problems with the economy, the difficulties of the Democratic Party being re-elected, and the concern over the Republican Party gerrymandering Indiana. Discussion refers to ?financial paralysis? in 1894, soon after the economic depression-the Panic of 1893. Some interesting comments include: ? On the economy: o ?the internal revenue system cultivated and enlarged, is the highway to commercial liberty? o ?laboring, toiling people of this country are in the clutches of a mighty octopus?combined and concentrated power of monies is flaunting itself in their faces,? ? On his political concern: o ?democratic train was never as badly ditched? ? On McKinley?s gold standard: o ?absolute political insanity? ? On personal relationship with Risley: o ?Now dear Risley sit down at once and write me; don?t for the sake of dear old days put it off as a punishment for my bad conduct. I long to see your handwriting.? Excerpts and summations of a few letters of note: ? Dec 25, 1983 - Discuses the more difficult and exacting work on the revision of the Tariff. ?In the present condition of the business interest of the country a more delicate and indeed perilous undertaking can hard be imagined. The Democratic party has now the hardest struggle before it ever known in its history?? ?Cleveland and Gresham are dead weight in the Hawaiian business and in due time will come out on top?. ? March 9, 1894 ? Discussion on the debate on the Tariff ?worst political outlook since the close of War?. Dire predictions for Democrats and the idea of leaving the Senate in 1897. Numerous political and personal references. ? September 14, 1894 ? ?As to the political outlook it is exceedingly doubtful. You will have seen that the elections in Maine and Vermont are all one way. In Maine, because we put lumber on the free list, which is the only article they have to sell, and in Vermont, because we took away the two per cent bounty on sugar from those who bore augur holes in sugar maple trees from a living. These facts made the elections one-sided in both the states, but I don?t see how they can operate against us in the Mississippi Valley and through the West and South. The tariff bill as it passed and became a law is really one of the strongest and best ever enacted in American history?? ?The internal revenue system cultivated and enlarged, is the highway to commercial liberty?. ? March 18, 1895 - ?We have no news here except such as is common to all the world. I have no heart to write about political or public affairs. The democratic train was never as badly ditched as it is at his time?? Additionally, reference to Voorhees introductions for Risley to the Consult to Copenhagen and the US ambassador to England. Voorhees mentions family members Richmond and Dick. Richmond is said to be in Paris in 1894. Richmond may be the son of John and Mary Caroline Risley. Dick is Richard Voorhees Risley (1874-1904) author of ?Sentimental Vikings? which is referenced in the letters. Letter 21 is from Voorhees? son Reese after his father?s death asking for personal anecdotes to include in a biographical sketch for a possible publication of his father?s writings. The letters describe the political and financial turmoil the country was in after the Civil War. Published Speeches of Daniel W. Voorhees 1859-1895 The collection contains 6 booklets of Voorhees? orated speeches made around the time he served as Indiana?s U.S. District Attorney through his time as U.S. Senator. He was a strong Democrat and refers to the party often. He worked to repeal the State Bank Tax and Sherman Purchase Law and the collection contains newspaper articles detailing his speeches. Also, includes two (2) newspaper articles referencing Voorhees? repeal of the State Bank Tax and Sherman Purchase Law. The Envelope is stamped Legation of the United States. The published booklets consist of arguments, speeches, addresses, and remarks of Voorhees. They include: ? Argument of Hon. D.W. Voorhees, of Terre Haute, Indiana, Delivered at Charlestown, Virginia, November, 8, 1859 upon the trial of John E. Cook, indicted for Treason, Murder and inciting Slaves to rebel, at the Harper?s Ferry Insurrection. ? Speech of Hon. D.W. Voorhees, of Indiana, Delivered in the House of Representatives, January 9, 1866. ? Speech of Hon. Daniel W. Voorhees, of Indiana, Delivered in the House of Representatives, March 23, 1872. The Plunder of Eleven States by the Republican Party. The House having met for debate as in Committee of the Whole on the state of the Union. ? Speech of Hon. D.W. Voorhees, of Indiana, Delivered in the Senate of the United States April 17, 1879. Free Elections and Impartial Courts. ? Address of D.W. Voorhees, of Indiana, Delivered in the United States Senate, January 26, 1886. In Memory of Thomas A. Hendricks, Late Vice-President of the United States. ? Remarks of D.W. R. 8518) making appropriations for the sundry civil expenses of the Government for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1896, and for the other purposes. ? Envelope addresses to Hon John Ewing Risley, Gilsey House, New York City, N.Y. from DW Voorhees, stamped ?Public Document. United States Senate. Part of Cong. Record. Free.? ? Newspaper 1: The World, Wednesday, August 23, 1893, ?Voorhees Speaks. First Gun for Repeal in the Chamber of the Senate. Strong Declaration of Allegiance to the President. The Indiana Senator Declares for Bimetallism. Repeal of the Silver Purchase Law the Shortest Route to Coinage of Silver and Gold-President Cleveland Declared to be a Bimetallist and Not a Gold Monometallist-Mr. Voorhees Upholds Pensions, Advocates Repeal of the State Bank Tax and Champions the Income Tax Proposition-A Great Crowd in the Senate Listens to Him-His Declaration of Allegiance to Cleveland Loudly Applauded-Scenes in the Chamber-Silver Men Not Permitted to Interrupt.? ? Newspaper 2: New York Herald, Wednesday, August 23, 1893, ?Voorhees Speaks for the Repeal. His Speech Against the Sherman Purchase Law Makes the Silver Men Wince. Gossip about the Adjournment. Significant Indications of the Belief that a Repeal Bill Will Certainly Pass. Senator Vests Dilemma. Mr. Carlisle?s Figures Leave Him Occupying a Somewhat Embarrassing Position.? Daniel W. Voorhees (1827-1897) was born in Ohio and was known for being a competent orator. He studied law and was a Democratic candidate for Congress in 1856. In 1858 he was appointed to U.S. District Attorney of Indiana. He served in the House of Representatives for the state of Indiana in the 7th districts from 1861 to 1866 and the 6th district from 1869-1873. He was the U.S. Senator for Indiana from 1877-1897 and the chairman of the U.S. Committee of Finance from 1893-1895. John Ewing Risley, born 1843 in Indiana, completed his schooling in and passed his bar in 1860. He settled in Terre Haute then moved to New York in 1864 where he ?hung out his shingle.? Risley married Mary Caroline, the sister of Senator Daniel Voorhees in 1863. He lived in New Jersey and New York. From 1893-1897 he was the ?Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary? for Denmark.

Prijs: € 1.450,-.

I beg innumerable pardons for ommitting to write to, or call on you;still more for having forgotten that my sisters, Mrs Dickens and I have been engaged for the last month to a party tonight. I need not say that Mrs Dickens is not going [Charles Dickens Jr had been born on the 6th January] but I must, even at the loss of the ancient Roman game of the flying ball which I have no doubt I should have found far more amusing than the modern entertainment of a dancing one. I may venture to return thanks on behalf of Miss Hogarth for your kindness, although she has left us.         Rare Victorian Vellum Manuscript - Firearms Patent with Large Wax Seal Issued to American Inventor

England 1872 - "For Improvements in Fire-Arms" [England], 25 July 1872. Manuscript Victorian patent document on vellum, folded and docketed, a rare and excellent example of a patent of invention for a guns, granted to William Edward Blake of New York City. Large printed document completed in manuscript and measuring approximately 76 x 51 cm, with original blue paper revenue stamp for five pounds, and a double-sided yellow wax seal measuring 16 cm in diameter. Small perforation at fold, age-toning to verso, otherwise in very good and original condition, a lovely and bright document, as issued, with a scarce large Victorian wax seal in its original round tin case. A round black tin container houses the massive double-sided yellow wax seal, diameter 16 cm (6.25 inches), attached to the document by original red plaited cords, one side being the Great Seal of the Realm, the other being Queen Victoria seated on a fully caparisoned royal horse. Diminutive fissures to sides of seal, otherwise in very good original condition, with vivid and crisp wax impression. The Commissioners of Patents' Journal, September 1872 issue, records this patent, no. 2224, being granted provisional protection for six months, as also stated in the document itself. Rare official patent document for an invention for "improvements in fire-arms" valid for fourteen years and issued to William Edward Blake, an inventor from New York City. Patent number 2224 was valid in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the Channel Islands, and Isle of Wight, with the condition that the specified stamp duty payments were remitted at the times specified, one hundred pounds being payable in the seventh year after the initial patent issue date, for example. Excerpt from the patent: ". Whereas William Edward Blake of the City of New York, United States of America, hath by his petition humbly represented to Us that he is in possession of an Invention for Improvements in Firearms, which the inventor believes will be of great public utility, that he is the first and true inventor thereof. that the same is not in use by any other." End Excerpt In the following year, 1873 William Edward Blake would receive at least one patent from the United States Patent Office, "for improvements to gun-stocks and spades, patent number 135,624." Blake described this dual-purposed instrument to be especially useful to American soldiers, in particular the Corps of Royal Sappers, Miners, and Engineers, by reducing the weight and number of tools carried over long distances. In essence he devised a two-in-one gun and spade by affixing a small shovel to the gun-stock which served dually as the shoulder rest when firing. It is conceivable that the present patent, valid in the United Kingdom, was for the same apparatus. Little is revealed about Mr. Blake in the present document, apart from his American citizenship and skill in manufacturing firearms for improved efficiency. Further research, however, may find the inventor to be a relation or even a partner of other Blake family gun makers. For example, John Henry Blake, was the manufacturer of a bolt action 7-shot revolving magazine sporting rifle, which was similar to a military type tested by an Ordnance Board of Governor's Island, New York, in July 1891. Blake, P. & E. W. of New Haven, Connecticut, manufactured Model 1821 muskets; the two partners are believed to have been the nephews of Eli Whitney Sr., and also to have been the trustees of the Whitney Armory from 1823 until Eli Whitney Jr. came of age in 1842. And earlier, the firm French, Blake and Kinsley, musket makers, secured a contract for 4,000 stand of arms on 20 October 1808, having delivered at least 2,175 units by 7 October 1812. The Great Seal of the Realm or Great Seal of the United Kingdom (prior to the Treaty of Union the Great Seal of England, then until the Union of 1801 the Great Seal of Great Britain) is a seal that is used to symbolize the Sovereign's approval of important state document

London: Grant & Co.,, 1872. A Pilgrimage. Quarto. Contemporary red half morocco, spine gilt tooled in compartments with olive morocco label, beige cloth sides with gilt titles to front, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt..0 180 Doré engravings to full page plates and vignettes in the text. Armorial bookplate "Henderson" to front pastedown. London bookseller's ticket also to front pastedown. Covers superficially scratched and marked in places, light spotting to some tissue guards, but on the whole a clean copy, entirely sound in a handsome contemporary binding that is almost always found in a shaken state due to the size of the book. First edition, an exceptionally good copy, of Doré & Jerrold's beautiful and influential "Pilgrimage" around the great metropolis of 19th century London, Doré's chiaroscuro engravings reflecting the closeness and contrast of London's social classes. It was this aspect in particular that gained the book contemporary censure in English reviews, concomitant popularity in America, and enormous financial success in both countries.

        Autograph letter signed ("A. C. Swinburne"). Henley-on-Thames, 25. X. 1872.

1872. 8vo. 2 pp. on folded double leaf. To the Italian poet P. G. Maggi, who had in 1871 published a translation of Swinburne's "Blessed Among Women - To The Signora Cairoli". Swinburne expresses his sympathy for the cause of the Risorgimento and mentions his great Baudelaire elegy, "Ave Atque Vale": "I fear you must have thought me very negligent + discorteous not to have written to you before in acknowledgment at one of your letter of July last, + of the very beautiful version which you have done me the honour to make of my poem addressed 'Alla Signora Carioli:' which reached me without address, or I should at once have written to thank you for the great pleasure it had given me. Nothing, in fact, connected with my work, could give me so much happiness as to know that it found favour - or at least that my intentions found acceptance - in the sight if those Italians whose approval + sympathy I should esteem the truest honour + highest reward I could wish to earn. I wish only that the work were worthier, + more adequate to express my love of your country + its cause - which is the cause of Europe + of the world. - I have not by me a copy of my verses in memory of Baudelaire; but on the first opportunity I will desire my publisher to send you a copy. Your letter of July was directed to an address which I left two years ago; + thus, passing from place to place, it was some months before it came into my hands. I now hasten to acknowledge it + to apologize for the long but involutary delay [...]". - Traces of folds; one edge slightly gnawed (touching text). Includes a copy of Maggi's translation [16 pp. 8vo; Londra, 1871], as well a manuscript of the same, probably in Maggi's own hand (24 pp. 8vo).

V. for a total of 480 plates. Original uniform red publishers decorated cloth. Boards with gilt embossed vignette of a fern; spines richly embossed and with gilt title, volume and number. Brown endpapers.= The magnum opus of the British botanist, malacologist, meteorologist and astronomer Edward Joseph Lowe (1825-1910). The illustrations are very accurate, resembling nature printing, and beautifully coloured. The plates were drawn by Alexander Francis Lydon (1836-1917) and printed by the famous B. Fawcett. Additional text engravings give taxonomically important details. Lowe received specimen from many contributors in Britain and abroad. Originally the work was issued in 120 parts between 1855 and 1860. Some book dealers report 480 coloured plates, but according to Stafleu & Cowan that is incorrect. Except the usual slight foxing on the endpapers of each volume and sunning of the spines a fine set in the attractive original publisher's binding.         The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals

John Murray, London 1872 - vi, 374pp, index. 7 photographic plates, as called for (numbered with Arabic numerals). 1st Edition, 2nd Issue (with 'that' misprinted as "htat" on p. 208). 4pp of adverts (dated Nov. 1872). This book is an important member of Darwin's evolutionary set and it was written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment. It was to be one of the first books with photographs ever published, with seven heliotype plates. Darwin's publisher warned that this aspect of the publication "would poke a terrible hole in the profits". Bright spine gilt, no repairs, tight square binding, no foxing. Tasteful booklate to inside cover. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Orphan Colony of Jews in China, Containing Letters from themselves, with the Latest Information

London: James Nisbet, 1872. Good antiquarian condition. Crown 8vo. 124 pp. Original publisher's green cloth over bevelled boards (hinges weakening, extremities a little rubbed, upper joint abraded). Large bookseller's ink stamp of "Jas. Whitehead, Kaipoi" (New Zealand). Well read and highly interesting copy, heavily annotated by Joseph Taylor, a New Zealand, a miner cum theologian (!) The text itself is quite remarkable: the Chinese and the Jews belong to the oldest nations in the world, but while the Chinese have been, until recently, the most insolated and insular, it may be justly asserted that the Jews are among the most widespread and scattered. The author was British Consul at Jerusalem who began to interest himself in Chinese Jews. Finn reports that by 1870 the Jewish colony in China was declining, alarmingly and rapidly. Finn transcribes a letter that asserts that all the Rabbis had died there, and that there was no one left who could read Hebrew. Taylor's copious notes, underlinings in red and blue, and a number of long marginal notes in ink appear throughout. On the first blank is written: "Find in this - A Book within a Book - in Notes and Markings by Joseph Taylor." Taylor studied geology, mining, engineering and theology in Manchester. In 1894 he and his wife Annie immigrated to New Zealand where he established the Puponga coal mine at the top of the South Island. The subject of a recent biography, Taylor appears to have been tenacious and exceedingly difficult character. We was clearly an expert geologist, practical and logical in his methodology, but a poor businessman who was imprisoned for two years for embezzling company funds, and whose neglect of the management of the Puponga Mine was largely responsible for its deterioration. In religion he was a different man. He could be charismatic, winning a flock of admirers, and then turning on them as though he half hoped for some bizarre sort of religious martyrdom. The only other copy of this work currently on the market has been rebound, is unannotated, and is selling for $1066 (6/12/15)

[Slave Trade.] Class B. - East Coast of Africa. Correspondence respecting the Slave Trade and other matters. From January 1 to December 31, 1872. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of Her Majesty. 1873. [C.-867-I]. London, Harrison and Sons, 1873.

1872. Folio. IV, 69, (1) pp. Sewn, with remains of former spine. Rare British parliamentary papers and correspondence with local agents and officers on the slave trade, especially in Madagascar and off the south coast of Arabia. One item discusses the reported landing in Arabia of slaves from a French dhow, noting that "few French dhows go to Arabia without a few slaves who are sold" (p. 69). Comprises the sections "Zanzibar" (pp. 1-43); "Reports from Naval Officers - East Coast of Africa Station" (pp. 45-59); and "Appendix [Zanzibar]" (pp. 61-69). - A good copy. Bennett 495.

Tortoises, terrapins, and turtles. Drawn from life.

London, Henry Sotheran, Joseph Baer & Co, 1872. Folio (36.8 x 27.5 cm). iv, 16 pp., 60 lithographed plates (without numbers). Original blindstamped buckram. Spine gilt-ornamented at head and foot, and gilt title. Yellow endpapers.= One of the rarest books on turtles. The authors mentioned on the title page are in fact the artists. The first 40 plates were intended for a work by Thomas Bell, who wrote the original text for a work supposed to treat all the recent and fossil testudines. Some parts did appear in print, but when the publisher went bankrupt, the work was cancelled, and the original plates - of which few were published - as well as 20 new ones, were used for the present work, with a new text by John Edward Gray. Why Gray was not mentioned on the title page is quite a mystery. Perhaps he saw himself more as the editor of the work. Blindstamp in titlepage top margin; unobtrusive small, oval stamp on plate versos (not shining through). In all, a very good copy. Adler p. 35; Nissen ZBI, 1701; Wood, 1872.
