Map of Victoria Constructed and Engraved at the Surveyor General?Äôs Office, Melbourne. Published by authority of the Government. Under the direction of A.J. Skene, MA Surveyor General, The Hon. J. J. Casey, President, Board of Land and Works & Comr. of Lands & Survey.

August 15th 1872., Melbourne, - Victoria during the Gold Rush Lithographed map with outline original colour, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into green cloth covers with gilt tooling and lettering. A detailed map of the state of Victoria. At the time of printing, Victoria was a relatively new colony, established in 1851. The discovery of gold near Ballarat and Bendigo a few months later set off one of the largest gold rushes in history, as settlers poured in to seek their fortunes. The map reflects the colony?Äôs source of population and wealth, showing how settlements cluster around the gold fields. The map was commissioned and overseen by Alexander Skene and the Hon. J. J. Casey. Alexander Skene was a Scottish surveyor who had a prominent role in land distribution and regulation in Australia. The Hon. J. J. Casey was the Commissioner for Victoria at the time, a colourful figure who went on to become Minister for Justice. A contemporary newspaper reports in 1878 that Casey had complained that someone without a title had preceded him into dinner at the Paris Exposition Universelle, and had told the Prince of Wales himself that Victoria should be given more land. While his manner may have been distasteful, Casey?Äôs claim was built on a solid foundation. Gold exports from Victoria enabled Britain to clear all foreign debts by the end of the century, and the explosion in population, particularly in Melbourne, meant that it was one of the most successful new colonies. However, the growth in population also initiated demands for agricultural and political reform, policies aided by the accurate surveying and mapping of Victoria, and the ultimate aim of this map.We could trace only two institutional copies of this edition, in the National Library of Australia and Cambridge University Library. 1310 by 1990mm. (51.5 by 78.25 inches). NLA MAP RM 1945.

LES EVANGILES DES DIMANCHES ET FETES DE L'ANNÉE Three Volumes (Royal Presentation Copy); PRESENTATION COPY inscribed and signed by Queen Margherita of Savoy, Queen-Consort of Umberto I, of the Kingdom of Italy, dated 1884

Paris, France: Bachelin - Deflorenne, 1872. Second Edition. Leather_bound. Very Good. Henri Leon Curmier. IN FRENCH. Three magnificent quartos, measuring 11 3/8" x 8 3/4". contemporary brown tooled morocco, sectioned and ruled in blind, five raised hubs (six compartments), gilt edge, royal blue watered silk doublures. Elaborate gilt dentelles to insides of front pastedowns.Signed presentation copy on fly-leaf of first volume (dated 1888) from Queen Margherita, Queen-Consort of (her first cousin) Umberto I, King of Italy, who reigned from 1878-1900. The first and second volumes comprise the text of the Gospels ornamentally printed with brilliant and beautiful borders, and enriched with exquisite illuminated miniatures, which were select pages from celebrated manuscripts throughout Europe, ranging from the tenth to the sixteenth century, in brilliantly colored and gilded facsimile. The third volume is the Appendices. Some scattered foxing to part of this third (Appendices) volume, and minor rippling to the section with pasted-on photographs, and to a thirteen-page section of Volume I, -- certainly neither obtrusive nor image-compromising. Superbly colored by means of Henri Leon Curmer's pioneering chromolithographic technique which involved first photographing, then hand-coloring these powerful and storied images. Actual copies of nearly 80 miniature photographs of his engravings (lacking three) are affixed to pages of Volume III, and opposite, on the recto, a poem, or (frequently) a biblical quote. This Third volume is dated 1864, and features illustrative texts describing each manuscript, correlating them by page number to their place in the first two volumes, and in-depth articles about these famous illuminators, materials used etc., for Curmer was a true scholar and master of the lithographic arts. Curmer also gives his nod of gratitude in this third volume by listing all of his subscribers to this magnificent and brilliantly executed creation, including their name, title, country of origin, subscriber number, how many sets ordered, etc. At the end of the volume (III) are copies of Jost Amman's "Eygentliche Beschreibung aller Stände auff Erden", followed by Hans Holbein's 41 starkly stunning images comprising his (1538) Dance of Death woodcut series. Finally d'Aligny's copies of Simon Vostre's marginals (the key term "marginal" emphasizing little relation of these bordering miniatures, to the heart and soul of the book in which they appeared). This 1872 printing of the first two volumes was published posthumously by the firm of Bachelin-Deflorenne of London, a branch of the Paris concern, which purchased Curmer's "whole stock and copyright of his principle publications in Chromo-lithography" (The Athenaeum No. 2217, Apr. 23, 1870) from the widow Mrs. Curmer. The Athenaeum went on to say: "These Chromo-Lithographs...are undoubtedly the richest and finest of the kind ever published". The work was thusly advertised in The May 2nd, 1870 issue of THE BOOKSELLER, (then "the" magazine of the bookselling trade -- published in London since 1802): "Two Vols, 4to. Bound in morocco, rich gilt ornaments on sides, gilt edges...This most magnificent work is illustrated with a great number of Miniatures, printed in gold and colors, reproducing the finest paintings of celebrated manuscripts, viz: Le Lilvre d'Heures du Cardinal Grimani, les Heures de Bedford, &c., and numerous Borders, all in Chromo-Lithography, forming a kind of Encyclopaedia of the art of Miniatures during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It is, besides, illustrated with a great number of Wood-engravings, &c., after Wiercx, and other artists." The cost then, for a comparable publisher's copy in 1870, with the optional morocco, with case, was £36, which converts to around $3107 ($4180) in today's currently); the book was enormously costly to create.

FIRST FRENCH EDITION OF ANDERSENS VISION OF A UTOPIAN WORLD CITY. Hendrik Christian Andersen (1872 - 1940) was a Norwegian-American sculptor, painter and urban planner. He was born in Bergen, Norway, and emigrated as an infant with his family to Newport, Rhode Island. As a young artist, he mingled among Newports wealthy elite, and spent some time as Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitneys art teacher. At the age of 21, Andersen travelled to Europe, eventually settling in Rome. There he pursued his artistic interest in monumental classically inspired pieces, believing that they stimulated in the viewer a desire for self-improvement. He devoted much of his time designing a perfect World City, filled with art, which would motivate humanity to achieve a near Utopian state. His urban planning philosophy is evident in his 1913 "A World Center of Communication". This enormous tome (the text weighed over ten pounds) was written with Ernest Hébrard and grew out of Andersens earlier writing, "The Fountain of Life". Central to the work was Andersens belief that art, more specifically monumental Beaux-Arts architecture, could bring about world peace and international harmony. The plan called for the creation of a central world capital. In his words, the city would be "a fountain of overflowing knowledge to be fed by the whole world of human endeavour in art, science, religion, commerce, industry, and law and in turn to diffuse throughout the whole of humanity as though it were one grand, divine body conceived by God, the vital requirements which would renew its strength, protect its rights, and enable it to attain greater heights through a concentration of world effort.Evident in the treatise is Andersens philosophy that art could change humanity and produce perfection. While roundly criticized by urban planners of the time for its political naïveté coupled with an over emphasis on the monumental, the work demonstrates an appreciation of the political and social conflicts necessitated by the rampant nationalism of the early 20th Century and sought to use art to bring about an Utopian world. Andersens view of the power of art and architecture to transform society can be seen as a precursor to similar concepts advanced later in the 20th Century by a variety of urban planners including Le Corbusier in his Contemporary City.In 1899 Andersen met Henry James the American expatriate writer. Although James was almost 30 years his senior the two developed a close relationship that was to last until James death in 1916. While the precise nature of the relationship is still unclear and may always be sothe two actually met on just a few occasions, and then for only brief periods of timethey exchanged numerous letters, which evidence a close, loving, homoerotic bond. Despite such affection, James lost patience with Andersen when the sculptor tried to interest him in the grandiose plans for the "World City". James warned Andersen that he was slipping into megalomania with his plans for the "World City". Andersen bequeathed his home, studio, papers and more than 400 pieces of his work to the Italian Government. The home in Rome has been renovated and now is the museum Museo Hendrik Christian Andersen located at Via Pasquale Stanislao Mancini, 20 (piazzale Flaminio). The book is in two parts. The first deals with the history of the city and monumental architecture, and seeks inspiration in classical and contemporary notions of city planning - Paris and Washington DC feature prominently. The second part details Andersens imaginary urban landscape, complete with works of art, for the World City. Olympic stadia, galleries for the arts and sciences, as well as government buildings are all outlined, and placed upon a defined grid plan with an emphasis on a grand central avenue acting as the axis of the city.

OBrosch. 24x16 cm. - KEIN REPRINT!

North America - West Coast. Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Channels between the Continent and Vancouver Id. Showing the Boundary Line between British and American Possessions. From the Admiralty Surveys by Captains H. Kellett, R.N. 1847,

British Admiralty. London. 1872. - Map, folding as issued, 28 3/4 x 44 on sheet 31 1/2 x 45 1/2 inches, outline handcolor to mark the boundary line. Very short separations at some of the fold intersections (with tiny amount of paper loss at one intersection), split at the end of one fold, light toning along fold lines, generally very good condition. An extremely detailed British map "prepared at the Admiralty 1st Nov 1872 under the Superintendence of Rear Admiral G.H. Richards, C.B. F.R.S. Hydrographer" with the boundary between the United States and Canada marked in color as it wends through the maze of the San Juan Islands and Vancouver Island. This map has the printed annotation "Chart referred to in the protocol of the undersigned of this date" with the signatures of Edward Thornton, James Prevost and Hamilton Fish and "Washington, March 10, 1873." It would appear that this is a contemporary copy of the map reflecting the abitral award of the San Juan Archipelago which was agreed in 1873. Detail includes soundings, physical features etc. An interesting and unusual map of this beautiful area.

Note biografiche di Giuseppe Mongeri. 1872 - ADDISON, Joseph. The Spectator: with a Historical and Biographical Preface by A. Chalmers. Boston: Little, Brown, 1872. Eight volumes. 12mo, contemporary three-quarter polished tan calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt. $1500.Late 19th-century collected edition of Joseph Addison's seminal periodical, with engraved frontispiece portraits in the first two volumes.Presenting essays by Addison, Richard Steele, Alexander Pope, Thomas Tickell and others, The Spectator, originally published 1711-14, "appeared daily, and was immensely popular, particularly with the new growing middle-class readership". The papers are mainly concerned with manners, morals, and literature. Their object is "˜to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality" (Drabble, 925-6). Addison helped set the pattern and establish the vogue for the periodical in the 18th-century, and cultivated a receptive audience for the emerging art form of the novel. "The Spectator made a mark in English literature, and fixed a form which was adopted with servile fidelity by many succeeding periodicals till the end of the century" (DNB).         A grouping of 21 Letters and Writings of U.S. Senator Daniel W. Voorhees (1872-1893)

A grouping of 21 Letters and Writings of U.S. Senator Daniel W. Voorhees (1872-1893). A grouping of 20 letters and Correspondence, from the 1870s through most of the 1890s, from Senator Daniel W. Voorhees (1827-97), of Indiana, to John Ewing Risley, his old friend from Terre Haute, Indiana, a fellow attorney who was married to Voorhees?s sister Mary, who later became a prominent attorney in New York and who was appointed as the United States Minister to Denmark in the early 1890s (1893-97). The letters include seven written just after Voorhees lost a bid for re-election to Congress from Indiana in the 1870s, and re-entered the practice of law. Another group of letters was written in the mid-1890s, during the time Voorhees was United States Senator, and was an important member of the Finance Committee during times of Tariff legislation, and also while he was a champion of the creation of the Library of Congress. The latter grouping of letters are written on Senate stationery, and were sent to Risley during the latter?s time in Copenhagen. All of the letters are of a deeply personal nature, and many contain personal feelings, as well as deeply held political positions. The two were evidently close personally and in business. They were partners in Clay County, Indiana, under the name of Voorhees and Risley when practicing law from 1860-1863. Voorhees was representing Risley in some of his cases. Rich in content. Additionally, this offering includes six (6) published speeches of Daniel W. Voorhees between 1859-1895. A brief summation follows 1872-1873 Seven (7) letters from Voorhees while he was serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for Indiana?s 6th district. All letters are to John E. Risley, except one that is to Voorhees? sister (most likely Mary Caroline, the wife of Risley). ? The first letter refers to economic difficulties in the country. The Panic of 1873 and the depression associated with it can be seen in the writings, ?there is scare a dollar in circulation here? and ?I was fully prepared for the general crash when it came.? ? The second letter, to his sister, discusses the health problems of Hallie (probably D.W. V.?s daughter Harriet), ?Her health & life are so much dearer to me than my own that I would willingly die that she might be well.? ? Other letters are to Risley and refer to his failed election (House of Representatives re-election). His focus on business is clear when he says he tends to ?read, talk, dream law.? He discusses business cards and his desire for Risley to be produced in Risley?s taste. He talks of a new partner in the practice and compares the qualities he values in a man to that of a courageous bull dog. ? Other topics include family, health (his physical and mental depression), and work. 1891-1897 The collection contains 13 letters from Senator Voorhees while Risley was serving as U.S. Minister to Denmark from 1893-1897. Voorhees was serving as U.S. Senator and member of the Finance Committee during which were clashes regarding the Tariff legislation. The letters are of a sincerely intimate nature, and contain personal feelings, as well as deeply held political positions. One envelope has Risley?s note that it contained the last letter he received from Voorhees. It is dated February 26, 1897. In it he tells of his plans for the future and reflects on the state of affairs in the country. Voorhees left office on March 3 of that year, and died the next month, on April 10. The letters are honest and eloquent, as Voorhees was a leading orator of his time. In addition to political insight, there are matters of business, family, health, and affection. There are many years, the 1880s for instance, where there are no letters. They were both in the U.S. at the time, and, perhaps, were seeing more of one another. What is in the letters however, provides readers with a good picture of the nature of the Senator, his feelings about many notables of the day, and his brotherly love for Risley. Voorhees discusses shared friends, specifically Miss Burgoyne, and enemies, his interest in Risley?s encounters with the Royal Danish family, he concerns himself with Risley?s health and discusses his own rheumatoid trouble. At length is talk of tariffs, problems with the economy, the difficulties of the Democratic Party being re-elected, and the concern over the Republican Party gerrymandering Indiana. Discussion refers to ?financial paralysis? in 1894, soon after the economic depression-the Panic of 1893. Some interesting comments include: ? On the economy: o ?the internal revenue system cultivated and enlarged, is the highway to commercial liberty? o ?laboring, toiling people of this country are in the clutches of a mighty octopus?combined and concentrated power of monies is flaunting itself in their faces,? ? On his political concern: o ?democratic train was never as badly ditched? ? On McKinley?s gold standard: o ?absolute political insanity? ? On personal relationship with Risley: o ?Now dear Risley sit down at once and write me; don?t for the sake of dear old days put it off as a punishment for my bad conduct. I long to see your handwriting.? Excerpts and summations of a few letters of note: ? Dec 25, 1983 - Discuses the more difficult and exacting work on the revision of the Tariff. ?In the present condition of the business interest of the country a more delicate and indeed perilous undertaking can hard be imagined. The Democratic party has now the hardest struggle before it ever known in its history?? ?Cleveland and Gresham are dead weight in the Hawaiian business and in due time will come out on top?. ? March 9, 1894 ? Discussion on the debate on the Tariff ?worst political outlook since the close of War?. Dire predictions for Democrats and the idea of leaving the Senate in 1897. Numerous political and personal references. ? September 14, 1894 ? ?As to the political outlook it is exceedingly doubtful. You will have seen that the elections in Maine and Vermont are all one way. In Maine, because we put lumber on the free list, which is the only article they have to sell, and in Vermont, because we took away the two per cent bounty on sugar from those who bore augur holes in sugar maple trees from a living. These facts made the elections one-sided in both the states, but I don?t see how they can operate against us in the Mississippi Valley and through the West and South. The tariff bill as it passed and became a law is really one of the strongest and best ever enacted in American history?? ?The internal revenue system cultivated and enlarged, is the highway to commercial liberty?. ? March 18, 1895 - ?We have no news here except such as is common to all the world. I have no heart to write about political or public affairs. The democratic train was never as badly ditched as it is at his time?? Additionally, reference to Voorhees introductions for Risley to the Consult to Copenhagen and the US ambassador to England. Voorhees mentions family members Richmond and Dick. Richmond is said to be in Paris in 1894. Richmond may be the son of John and Mary Caroline Risley. Dick is Richard Voorhees Risley (1874-1904) author of ?Sentimental Vikings? which is referenced in the letters. Letter 21 is from Voorhees? son Reese after his father?s death asking for personal anecdotes to include in a biographical sketch for a possible publication of his father?s writings. The letters describe the political and financial turmoil the country was in after the Civil War. Published Speeches of Daniel W. Voorhees 1859-1895 The collection contains 6 booklets of Voorhees? orated speeches made around the time he served as Indiana?s U.S. District Attorney through his time as U.S. Senator. He was a strong Democrat and refers to the party often. He worked to repeal the State Bank Tax and Sherman Purchase Law and the collection contains newspaper articles detailing his speeches. Also, includes two (2) newspaper articles referencing Voorhees? repeal of the State Bank Tax and Sherman Purchase Law. The Envelope is stamped Legation of the United States. The published booklets consist of arguments, speeches, addresses, and remarks of Voorhees. They include: ? Argument of Hon. D.W. Voorhees, of Terre Haute, Indiana, Delivered at Charlestown, Virginia, November, 8, 1859 upon the trial of John E. Cook, indicted for Treason, Murder and inciting Slaves to rebel, at the Harper?s Ferry Insurrection. ? Speech of Hon. D.W. Envelope addresses to Hon John Ewing Risley, Gilsey House, New York City, N.Y. from DW Voorhees, stamped ?Public Document. United States Senate. Part of Cong. Record. Free.? ? Newspaper 1: The World, Wednesday, August 23, 1893, ?Voorhees Speaks. First Gun for Repeal in the Chamber of the Senate. Strong Declaration of Allegiance to the President. The Indiana Senator Declares for Bimetallism. Repeal of the Silver Purchase Law the Shortest Route to Coinage of Silver and Gold-President Cleveland Declared to be a Bimetallist and Not a Gold Monometallist-Mr. Voorhees Upholds Pensions, Advocates Repeal of the State Bank Tax and Champions the Income Tax Proposition-A Great Crowd in the Senate Listens to Him-His Declaration of Allegiance to Cleveland Loudly Applauded-Scenes in the Chamber-Silver Men Not Permitted to Interrupt.? ? Newspaper 2: New York Herald, Wednesday, August 23, 1893, ?Voorhees Speaks for the Repeal. His Speech Against the Sherman Purchase Law Makes the Silver Men Wince. Gossip about the Adjournment. Significant Indications of the Belief that a Repeal Bill Will Certainly Pass. Senator Vests Dilemma. Mr. Carlisle?s Figures Leave Him Occupying a Somewhat Embarrassing Position.? Daniel W. Voorhees (1827-1897) was born in Ohio and was known for being a competent orator. He studied law and was a Democratic candidate for Congress in 1856. In 1858 he was appointed to U.S. District Attorney of Indiana. He served in the House of Representatives for the state of Indiana in the 7th districts from 1861 to 1866 and the 6th district from 1869-1873. He was the U.S. Senator for Indiana from 1877-1897 and the chairman of the U.S. Committee of Finance from 1893-1895. John Ewing Risley, born 1843 in Indiana, completed his schooling in and passed his bar in 1860. He settled in Terre Haute then moved to New York in 1864 where he ?hung out his shingle.? Risley married Mary Caroline, the sister of Senator Daniel Voorhees in 1863. He lived in New Jersey and New York. From 1893-1897 he was the ?Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary? for Denmark.
