THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, And what Alice found there.

FIRST EDITION. Dated 1872 but actually published in time for Christmas 1871. 8vo. Illustrated with fifty engravings by John Tenniel. A Very good, clean copy with a few small ink spots to the fore-edge of the pages, only really noticeable when the pages are fanned, in publishers original red cloth with gilt lettering, decoration and ruling to the spine. Triple gilt ruled borders on boards which each have a circular illustration, of the Red and the White Queens, within triple lined frames. Dark green coated endpapers. Binders paper ticket (Burn & Co) on the inner rear board. Some splitting to the rear inner hinge which is still firm and tight. The front hinge firm and uncracked. All edges gilt. The boards are a bit rubbed & bumped to the edges and the spine is showing minor darkening but overall a very good copy of this famous classic which is a notoriously difficult book to find in nice original condition.

Spine, raised bands, decorative gilt tooling, gilt titles. Corners & joints lightly rubbed. Internally, decorative gilt tooling to board edges & turn-ins. Dodgson, author, mathematician, and photographer, whose writing meant a great deal to him; It was the main course by which he could do something for others, to fulfil a deep religious desire to contribute something to humanity—it was his offering to God. After resigning his mathematical lectureship in 1881, at the age of forty-nine (he retained his studentship and resident privileges at Christ Church to the end), he devoted himself primarily to his writing. Often standing at his upright desk (he calculated that he could stand and write for ten hours a day), he turned out a myriad of works. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was followed in late 1871 by its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, and in 1876 by that longest and most revered nonsense poem in English, The Hunting of the Snark.         A JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH

1872 British First Edition with 52 illustrations by Riou, original pictorial cloth titled and decorated in gilt, the True English First Edition dated MDCCCLXXII, interestingly the only time a British Jules Verne book was dated in Roman Numerals, the book was published for the Christmas market in November 1871 and post-dated 1872, the British publication in the original binding is by far one of the toughest Verne titles to find in First Edition form, one of the reasons may have been the high cost of the book which was reportedly priced at £7.00 on its release, a sum that would have been well beyond the pockets of most people of the time. Another interesting point, the First Edition uses the plate "The Descent of the Crater" as the frontispiece, whereas later Griffith & Farran editions use "The Central Sea" as the frontispiece, the reason I point this out is that when you check the pagination of the Griffith & Farran editions you will see that the text pages are numbered but not the plates, with the plates being counted in with the pagination, because "The Descent of the Crater" is normally counted as pages 121/122 you will see a break in the pagination in this copy where that plate has been used as the frontispiece, also when you check for "The Central Sea" plate in this copy you will find it located between pages 216/217 with no break in the pagination for the plate, this is the second copy of the First Edition where I have seen "The Descent of the Crater" used as the Frontispiece. Regarding the condition of this copy, apart from some minor marks to the rear board, mild rubbing to the gilt on the spine and some virtually invisible restoration to the spine tips, the covers are in generally very good condition, internally there is the name of the original owner with the date 1873 in old ink to top of the title page, this copy is virtually free of any foxing and marking apart from pages 292/293 which are noticeably browned at the edges (pictured) possibly something had been left between these two pages at one point as a page marker which has reacted with the paper, the browning is visible to the reverse of these page edges as well with a small edge tear with no loss that just stops before the text, there is a thin line of browning just touching the outer edge of one other page though this is not very noticeable, creases to two page corners, finally the rear inner hinge has been professionally strengthened retaining the original endpapers but with a thin 5mm strip visible along inner hinge of a slightly lighter coloured paper, this is a very neat and unobtrusive professional repair. Some creasing to frontispiece tissue guard, I have mentioned everything that could be considered a fault, which probably makes this copy sound far worse than it is, overall this is one of the cleanest examples of the British First Edition I have come across which presents very nicely on the shelf, a notoriously difficult book to find in First Edition form, a true Verne rarity and one of the authors most sought after titles.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Cosima Wagner geb. Liszt"). [Eckersdorf, Schloß] "Fantaisie", 21. VI. 1872.

1872. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.

Animal Locomotion. An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Animal Movements. 1872-1885. Author's Edition. Philadelphia, published under the Auspices of the University of Pennsylvania, plates printed by the Photo-Gravure Company, 1887.

1872. Large folio. Half morocco, retaining the original cloth covers and gilt cover label. 11 (instead of 21) plates. Author's Edition. Landmark collection of Muybridge's revolutionary "instantaneous photography", a self-developed technique that allowed for high-precision series of high shutter speed stop-motion photographs. He began his work with photographing horses, but in time it would also include athletes, birds, lions, and even camels. Muybridge first photographed a horse with all 4 hooves off the ground in 1872, after Leland Stanford (later the Governor of California) hired Muybridge to determine whether a horse leaves the ground completely when running, a hotly debated issue at the time. (Stanford believed they did, and Muybridge won Stanford a $25,000 bet.) By 1885, Muybridge had accumulated over 20,000 photographic negatives, or 781 sequential series of photo-plates, shot from multiple cameras at carefully planned locations and angles, each of which showed a human and/or animal engaged in a continuous motion. This required Muybridge to develop cameras for faster shutter closure. In cases where a human or animal moved any great distance, photographing the movement required a team of photographers, rather than a single photographer. Muybridge and H. Allen, a physiology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, published 37 eleven-volume sets which contained a collotype of every one of the 781 photographic series. This "Author's Edition" consists of a selection of the most important collotypes contained in the full work; the present set includes all the plates to show animals: No. 565. Horse trotting. - 616. Horse and rider, trotting more rapidly. - 626. A third horse and rider, running, including several frames with all 4 hooves off the ground. - 647. A horse jumping a hurdle at high speed, with a bareback jockey. - 659. Mule jumping and kicking with his hind limbs. - 710. Race hound at high speed, including frames with all 4 feet off the ground. - 721. Lion circling along the wall of a small enclosure. - 739. Camel walking. - 755. Bird flying, including swoops down. - 3. Runner. - 152. Runner jumping a hurdle. - The combined illustrated area of any given plate varies, but is typically about 21 x 30 cms. Muybridge had focused his early photographic work on San Francisco and Yosemite, but had later been sent by the Federal Government to photograph Alaska for the High Sierra Survey. (The latter project was in 1868, shortly after the territory was purchased. He was later sent on a second trip to Alaska to photograph the Tlingit tribe and the Modoc War.) During his time as a photographer, Muybridge owned a racetrack. Late in life, he invented the zoopraxiscope, a primitive forerunner of the motion picture camera. Analyses made possible by the technique later had a wide range of implications for sports, podiatry, physical therapy, vertebrate paleontology, and other fields. - Pastedowns and spine renewed, otherwise an excellent, clean copy in the original boards.

1872. Folio. 3 unnum. leaves, 40 original photographs on albumenized paper (approx. 245 x 180 mm) on stiff cardboard mounted on hinges, and 42 unnum. leaves of explanations. Publisher's half brown hard-grained morocco, blind stamped calico boards, with gilt title and figures, raised bands. Edges gilt. Beautiful photographic album made in Cairo, the first illustrated catalogue of the first Egyptian Museum. While copies dated 1871 exist, both copies preserved in the French National Library bear the date 1872. The photographs by Hippolyte Délié and Émile Béchard show the halls and antiques of the Bulaq Museum, founded in Cairo in 1863 by the great Egyptologist Auguste Mariette (1821-81). The Museum was created by Auguste Mariette, who in 1858, following his appointment as head of the Antiquities Service, moved the banks of the Nile, in Bulaq, where he assigned four rooms in his residence for exhibitions. Mariette obtained permission to settle in Bulaq in the abandoned offices of the River Company. On these dilapidated premises, where he lived with his family, the "Director of the Historical Monuments of Egypt and the Cairo Museum" converted the first four exhibition halls with the assistance of his faithful assistants Bonnefoy and Floris. The period photographs, published in this 'Album du musée de Boulaq', show the low buildings by the river, almost completely devastated during the flood of 1878. In the preface dated November 1, 1871, Mariette explains the origins of this monumental album: "Mr. Hippolyte Délié and Mr. Béchard requested permission from the Directorate of the Bulaq Museum to reproduce by photography some of the monuments on display in our galleries. Not only the application [...] was explicitly welcomed, but the Director of the Museum feels he must promote the work of the great photographers from Cairo, opening up for them the cabinets of the Museum and choosing among the objects it contains those that appeared to him most worthy of inclusion in the proposed Album. Mr. Délié and Mr. Béchard have followed, for the classification and arrangement of their proofs, the order adopted in the Notice sommaire, which is for sale at the entrance of the Museum. The three plates showing the interior and exterior of the Museum serve as an introduction to the Album. The monuments are then classified into religious, funerary, civilians, historical, Greek and Roman sections. The photographic Album [...] is thus an illustrated catalogue of the Museum. The remarkable execution of the plates allows us also to recommend to everyone this album by Mr. Délié and Mr. Béchard. Travelers will indeed use it as a souvenir of their visit to the Bulaq Museum. Scholars will find the hieroglyphic texts reproduced with such clarity as if they were in direct presence of the monuments. Finally artists will not study from any other work on Egyptology as well as from the beautiful proofs delivered from the apparatus used by Mr. Délié and Mr. Béchard, the difficult problems that relate to the history of art in Egypt". The French photographer Émile Béchard was active during the years 1869-90: "Béchard arrived in Egypt probably together with his partner Délié. He collaborated with him in the production of the Album du Musée Boulaq and in the carte de visite photographs of native types and costumes. There is little information on the life of Béchard. It is known that he was awarded a first class gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1878 in Paris, and his images appear in many of the travel and topographic albums until almost the end of the century. His major achievement was no doubt his monumental album of photographs of the most important archaeological sites and antiquities of Egypt [...]. It is worthy to note that Béchard did have a great deal of talent in picturing architecture. The neatness of the execution and printing of the final image adds tremendously to the monumentality he was able to reflect in them" (cf. Perez, p. 123). "Délié arrived in Egypt the year the Suez Canal was opened and settled in Cairo. Until the mid-1870s he was in partnership with Émile Béchard. The two collaborated on a major photography album on the Boulaq Museum that was very highly praised as one of the most luxurious and finely printed books of the period. [...] Délié's photographs were known already in 1869, and some of them were used that early for woodcuts illustrating articles in Le Tour du Monde. In 1876, he became a member of the Société Française de Photographie, and in 1878 he was awarded a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. For some reason, Délié's images, although equal in quality, are much rarer than those by Béchard, even though both continued to work after they dissolved their partnership. His photographs are exclusively of Egypt, mainly ruins, antiquities, and cityscapes, with a few genre studies" (p. 153f.). Perez also devotes a long notice to the archaeological activity of Mariette, a familiar to photography: "Best known as Mariette Bey, this famous Egyptologist became an archaeologist almost by chance. He was a young schoolteacher in the provincial town of Boulogne-sur-Mer, writing bad novels and chairing the local fishing-club, when he happened across the papers of a relative, Nestor L'Hote. L'Hote's writings of Egypt aroused Mariette's interest, and he turned to the study of Coptic writings and hieroglyphs. He published a number of papers that attracted the attention of Charles Lenormant, who sent him to Egypt in 1850 to hunt down Coptic manuscripts, which were at the time actively collected by British scholars. He remained in Egypt four years, during which time he realized the importance of finding and saving the archaeological treasures still buried in Egypt. Mariette shared his conviction with Ferdinand de Lesseps, whom he met in 1857. The latter appealed to the Viceroy of Egypt, and Mariette was appointed head of the department of Antiquities, a post he created and held until his death in Cairo in 1881. During his years there he displayed an unusual instinct in finding excavation sites; his contribution to Egyptology is invaluable. He was also founder of the Boulaq museum. Photography became an inseparable part of his activity. He mainly employed professional photographers such as Délié, Béchard, and Brugsch, but he himself also photographed, using an 8x10'' camera, newly found artefacts and ancient structures in remote parts of the Egyptian desert. It is interesting to note that, although technically not perfect, Mariette's photographs have a certain precision of angle and composition that makes the image 'right' and authentic. This is no doubt the result of his love and understanding of the objects he was photographing" (p. 194). - Spine scuffed, some foxing. Cf. Nissan N. Perez, Focus East, 1988. On Mariette cf. also J.-M.

Kapital'. Kritika Politicheskoi Ekonomii. St. Petersburg, N. P. Poliakov, 1872.

1872. (2), XIII, (2), 678 pp. 8vo. Contemporary half calf with gilt title to spine. In custom-made green morocco-backed clamshell case. First edition in Russian, the first translation to any language of "Das Kapital". Because of the unexpected popularity of the book, and the subsequent ban in the 1890s, this edition of 3000 copies was soon exhausted and the book became very rare. Later, Marx noted the excellence of the Russian translation. In 1880, he wrote to F. Zorge saying that of all countries, the "Capital" had been read and appreciated most fully in Russia.

Tree sheep ca. 1872, gilt spine, light wear at spine and extremities, front endpaper a bit loose. Light toning but very good. First Edition of the first monograph on the antiquity of man published by a Spanish author. Vilanova was the first professor of geology and paleontology at the Universidad Central in Madrid, and a founding member of the Spanish Society of Natural History. Like the majority of Spanish geologists in the latter part of the 19th century, Vilanova sought to reconcile recent paleontological and geological findings with the teachings of established religion. He took an anti-Darwinist position on the question of human antiquity. Vilanova is best known as the first archeologist to excavate the cave of Altamira after Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola discovered the cave’s famous prehistoric paintings in 1879. Both he and Sanz de Sautuola believed that the paintings dated from the Paleolithic era, but the two men’s claims were forcefully rejected at the 1880 Prehistorical Congress, with many believing that the paintings were faked. The controversy over the authenticity of the Altamira cave paintings was not resolved until 1902, when French archeologist Emile Cartailhac, one of the most prominent of the doubters, retracted his opposition in an article titled “Mea culpa d’un sceptique” (Anthropologie 13 [1902]: 348-354).

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS AND WHAT ALICE FOUND THERE

London: Macmillan, 1872. First edition and the first issue with "wade" on page 21. With the famous Illustrations throughout by John Tenniel. 8vo, original red cloth, decorated on the covers with gilt lines and central gilt pictorial devices, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, a.e.g. Now protected in a handsome fold-over straight-grain full morocco box gilt letttered. 224 pp. A fine and very bright copy with only a minimal amount of age-wear or mellowing to the original red cloth. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. Though dated 1872 the work was released in 1871 in time for the Christmas market. Tenniel's illustrations are some of the most charming to ever appear in children's literature. This is the second half of the Alice story with the original illustrations by him issued in the first printing of the first edition. The Alice books have proven themselves to be among the most enduring classics of literature--for children or otherwise. ALICE’s importance might be gauged by the fact that it is one of only three books written for children (five, if one includes Aesop's Fables and Froebel's “Mutter- und Kose-Leider”) included in the "Printing and the Mind of Man" exhibition. ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND and its sequel, THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS, are "unique among 'juveniles' in appealing equally--if not more strongly --to adults. Written by an Oxford don, a clergyman, and a professional mathematician, they abound in characters--the White Knight, the Red Queen, the Mad Hatter, Humpty Dumpty--who are a part of everybody's mental furniture. And the philosophic profundity of scores, if not hundreds, of these characters' observations, long household words wherever English is spoken, gains mightily from the delicious fantasy of their setting" (PMM 354).

During that period Drake went to Syria as a representative of the Palestine Exploration Fund, but for some reason he left the Fund, and he and Burton continued the exploration of Syria and Lebanon on their own. The work is not a continuous narrative of their travels but consists of articles by Burton, Drake, Mrs. Burton, and others. The plates include shells, plants, and Burton's collection of anthropological materials from the Holy Land (skulls etc.), and the text contains catalogues of these materials. Penzer pp85-88; Blackmer 247; Casada 68. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Machzor] Kefi Minhag America: Tefilot Bnei Yeshurun le-Rosh Hashana. [The Divine Service of American Israelites for the New Year].

Bloch & Co. Cincinnati 1872 - Two volumes, 12mo (17.2 x 12 cm). New Year - 212 pp.; Atonement - 307, [1], 55, [1] pp. Parallel texts in English and Hebrew, with psalms with additional German translation. Original dark brown cloth boards with gilt lettering to spines, gilt edges and blind-stamped decoration to covers of New Year volume; slight wear to edges. Atonement volume with stamp of Tobias Schanfarber to lower pastedown. One of the first accepted Reform prayer books for the High Holidays in the United States. The volumes include numerous non-traditional prayers in English and German that are almost Protestant in tone, whilst omitting a number of traditional prayers such as Utnah Toqef, Kol Nidre and most of the Al Chets. The inclusion of German in the Siddur testifies to the essentially German character of the nineteenth century American denomination of Reform Judaism. This Siddur was intended to serve as the common prayer book for all of America's Jews. Nevertheless, the community remained divided over traditional versus liberal payer books and neither became dominant. The publisher of the volumes, Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise (1819-1900), was a pioneer of Reform Judaism, and became its acknowledged leader and institutional architect. Wise organised the formation of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (1873), the Hebrew Union College (1875), and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (1889). The reforms that he instituted sought to modernise Jewish teaching and adapt Jewish lifestyle to the conditions of life in a new land. Wise also played a crucial role in establishing the Central Conference of American Rabbis, in 1889, of which he later became president. The Union Prayer Book was assigned by the Conference to all Reform congregations. The prayerbook was first published by Rabbi Wise in 1857 and was intended to address the initial conflict in the United States between supporters and opponents of traditionalism in early Reform Judaism. The roots of this machzor date back to a programme Wise had laid out in the May 1847 issue of Isaac Leeser's Occident, in which he argues that American Jews came "from different countries, and, brought with them diverse Minhagim; and this circumstance must always prove a source of confusion and disagreement in the various Synagogues" and that it was necessary to create a new Minhag (custom of prayer) to "bring unity among. all the American Synagogues" and to "uphold the Word of the Living God. in the free country of America", without "the desire for innovation, nor the thirst for fame, nor a giddy disposition for reform".
