Stockholm från Mälaresidan [and ] Stockholm från Saltsjösidan.

Stockholm. P. B. Eklunds förlag och Lith. Inst. / Art. Lith. Anst. Mälaresidan published in 1872. Saltsjösidan published in 1873. Images 46,5 x 74 cm Frames 71 x 96 cm. Colour printed lithographs. Contemporary gilt frames with floral decorations in the corners. Old glass. The images are printed separetly and mounted on larger papers which have the printed text. (There are copies where both the image and the printed text are on the same paper). A few cracks and a couple of minor pieces of plaster missing from the frame of Mälaresidan. The sky of Saltsjösidan slightly browned. The text papers are somewhat browned, Saltsjösidan a little bit more. The text paper of Mälaresidans with some white in the left and upper margin and a small water stain in the right margin. A fantastic item in its original state. Has been touched very little since the 1870s.. Two stunning bird´s eye panoramas of the city of Stockholm, from the east and the west. The old town in the centre. A mix of steamers and sailing vessels are teeming the waters. You can see the brand new train line on bridges crossing the water, as well as many new buildings. The panoramas were published just as the industrial revolution started to transform Stockholm. Here we see the early stages of a formidable modernization and expansion of the city that would last up to the first world war. Otto August Mankell was an architecht, illustrator and lithographer. He executed fine panoramas of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Visby, as well as two great plate books with city views of Stockholm and Gothenburg. "Stockholm från Mälaresidan" was lithographed by Alexander Nay, a very skilled and productive artist. He lithographed many important plate books in Sweden and Denmark. The present panoramas are very rare, especially in contemporary frames. A once in a lifetime opportunity

        Kapital. Kritika politicheskoi ekonomii.

xiii, [3], 678 pp. 8vo. Half contemporary Russian roan over black cloth, four raised bands, two compartments with Cyrillic lettering in gilt. First edition in Russian. PMM 359. T. 1-j, kn. 1-ja. Process proizvodstva kapitala. Translated from the German by G. Alexandrovich Lopatin and Nikolay Frantsevich Danielson (who went on to complete the final two volumes). True first edition with proper points. The most important work on political economy in the 19th century and one whose effect in the 20th century cannot be overestimated. "By an odd quirk of history the first foreign translation of Das Kapital to appear was the Russian, which Petersburghers found in their bookshops early in April 1872. Giving his imprimatur, the censor, one Skuratov, had written 'few people in Russia will read it, and still fewer will understand it'. He was wrong; the edition of three thousand sold out quickly; and in 1880 Marx was writing to his friend F.A. Sorge that 'our success is still greater in Russia where Kapital is read and appreciated more than anywhere else', " (Printing and the Mind of Man, p. 218). Boards rubbed and stained, front endpapers soiled, most of rear endpaper removed, faint dampstain to lower portion of leaves, but overall still a very good copy.

        Brilliantly Decorated Autograph Album

N.p. N.p. , N.d. [1872]. Oblong 8vo., (4 x 7 inches), contemporary full dark green morocco with decorative stamping on both covers; spine expertly rebacked to match. In this album of 102 leaves, there are (mostly) nicely inscribed sentiments, signed and dated during the summer months of the year 1872. Many of the signers are from the Hudson River valley; others come from as far away as the southern United States, the Midwest, and there are contributors from Cuba and Colombia. A number of the leaves have small added penwork flourishes, but the highlight of the album is a series of FIVE FINELY RENDERED PAGES of birds, executed in purple, blue, gold and brown ink; each one is signed, S. I. JOHNSON, PENMAN. They are large examples of full color “Off hand flourishing.” On the facing pages, drawn in brown ink, there are five more examples of large flourished details of birds. All ten examples are very similar in style and execution to entry No. 62 in the catalogue, Calligraphy & Handwriting in America: 1710-1962, which is credited to an unknown penman. The signed examples of birds by S. I. Johnson are EXCEPTIONALLY FINE. Because of the disparity of the residences of the signers combined with the dates on which they wrote their entries, one can conclude that the album was not a record of a trip undertaken by the album’s owner. Rather, it would seem that the book was signed either by visitors to his or her home, or, perhaps, it was signed by people who met (vacationed) at some watering place in New York. Also, because many of the pages are so meticulously inscribed it is possible that the people who signed the book had a common interest in calligraphy (and were attending a meeting of a society or group who shared that appreciation). Another possibility is suggested by the early appearance in the album of an etched vignette entitled “RESIDENCE AND PLEASURE GROUNDS OF PROF. H. G. EASTMAN. PRESD’T OF EASTMAN COLLEGE, POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. ON THE HUDSON” that shows a horse drawn carriage leaving beautifully landscaped grounds upon which resides a stately house. Perhaps the signers were associated with the school. A handsome example of American folk art. Calligraphy & Handwriting in America: 1710-1962 Assembled and Shown by the Peabody Institute Library, Baltimore, Maryland. November, 1961—January, 1962. FIVE FINE SIGNED EXAMPLES “OFF HAND FLOURISHING”

1872. [Mexico]. [Railroads]. Stab-stitched pamphlet in original printed wrappers. Covers darkened, light soiling and minor edgewear, small ink spot on front wrapper. Light browning, some chipping and foxing, creasing to corners of most leaves. Contemporary annotations to several leaves and two sheets of laid-in notes in Spanish and English. Rare. * Text of the original concession, issued to Antonio D. Richards, Santiago Smith, and Jose Brennan, facing the altered concession issued to General W. S. Rosecrans. "In 1868 President Johnson appointed Rosecrans to be Minister to Mexico. Five months later, President Grant terminated the appointment. His brief diplomatic career convinced him that a prosperous Mexico would need peace, immigration, and railways, and he applied for a concession to build a narrow-gauge railway and telegraph line from Tampico to the Coast. The record of toil and travel, scheming, waiting on rich men and politicians, and of the final collapse of his Mexican dreams, forms a wearying chapter of the frustrating years from 1869 through 1873. Yet he was almost the first, and perhaps the most important, in a long line of Yankee railroad promoters in Mexico.": Lamers, The Edge of Glory: A Biography of General William S. Rosecrans, U.S.A.       Philadelphia: Caxton Press of Sherman & Co. for D. Rice & Co., 1872-1874.. Two royal octavo text volumes, 10 7/16 x 7 1/4 inches: [4],450; 541pp. "Billy Bowlegs" portrait as frontispiece to second volume of text. Folio atlas, with 120 handcolored lithographs after Karl Bodmer, Charles Bird King, James Otto Lewis, P. Rhindesbacher, and R.M. Sully, drawn on stone by A. Newsam, A. Hoffy, Ralph Tremblay, Henry Dacre, and others, printed and colored by J.T. Bowen and others. Expertly bound to style in uniform navy half morocco over the original blue cloth covered, richly gilt spines divided into five compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with repeat decorative motif built up from small tools, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Very good. The last folio edition of one of the most important 19th- century works on the American Indian, and one of the most important color plate books produced in America in the age of lithography. The first folio edition was issued by E.C. Biddle from 1836 to 1844, and reissued by F.W. Greenough and Daniel Rice. The number of different printers and lithographers involved in the project speaks to the complicated production of the most elaborate plate book published in the United States up to that time. The present final edition of McKenney and Hall was issued by the firm of D. Rice, whose father took over the initial project as publisher in the early 1840s. This edition differs from the original folio edition in significant ways. Most importantly, a plate is added, the portrait of Seminole chief Billy Bowlegs which appears as a frontispiece in the second text volume, making this the most complete form of the work. Secondly, the text is present in two separate octavo volumes, thus eliminating the problem of offsetting which plagues the original edition. Thirdly, thirty-nine of the folio plates have been reprinted, using the same lithographic stones, but eliminating the printer's credit lines which appear on earlier issues of the plates, and providing new captions with the names of the Indians only. These plates are printed on superior paper stock and are particularly brilliantly colored. The other eighty-one folio plates are from the earlier issues, evidently using print stock the Rice firm had on hand. Fourthly, this edition omits the map, table, and facsimile signatures of subscribers which appeared in the original edition, and also removes James Hall's name from the titlepage, only crediting McKenney. McKenney and Hall's ...INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA... has long been renowned for its faithful portraits of American Indians. The portrait plates are based on paintings by artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington, D.C., forming the basis of the War Department's Indian Gallery. Most of King's original paintings were subsequently destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian, and their appearance in McKenney and Hall's magnificent work is thus our only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the 19th century. Numbered among King's sitters were Sequoyah, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Cornplanter, and Osceola. After six years as superintendent of Indian Trade, Thomas McKenney had become concerned for the survival of the western tribes. He had observed unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of the American Indians for profit, and his vocal warnings about their future prompted his appointment by President Monroe to the Office of Indian Affairs. As first director, McKenney was to improve the administration of Indian programs in various government offices. His first trip was during the summer of 1826 to the Lake Superior area for a treaty with the Chippewa, opening mineral rights on their land. In 1827 he journeyed west again for a treaty with the Chippewa, Menominee, and Winnebago in the present state of Michigan. His journeys provided an unparalleled opportunity to become acquainted with Indian tribes. When President Jackson dismissed him from his government post in 1839, McKenney was able to turn more of his attention to his publishing project. Within a few years he was joined by James Hall, a lawyer who had written extensively about the West. Both authors, not unlike George Catlin, whom they tried to enlist in their publishing enterprise, saw their book as a way of preserving an accurate visual record of a rapidly disappearing culture. McKenney provided the biographies, many based on personal interviews, and Hall wrote the general history of the North American Indian. OCLC 35709791. Another edition: HOWES M129, "b." BENNETT, p.79.         More Nonsense. Pictures, Rhymes, Botany, Etc.

      R. J. Bush 1872. Unpaginated. Nonsense Botany followed by 100 nonsense pictures and rhymes (limericks), which are in turn followed by an A-Z of nonsense rhymes and pictures. Lots of nonsense. Great copy - the boards are bumped and chipped round the edges and the head and foot of spine are bumped; there's a bit of rubbing to the pictorial board, and the rear panel, and a bit of an inkstain at the very bottom of the front cover, but still in much better condition than usual. And of course the inside is triffic.

A bound collection of coloured botanical specimen plates

Rochester, N.Y.: D. M. Dewey, 1872. Oblong octavo. (5 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches). Mounted on guards throughout. 33 plates by Dewey (29 hand-coloured using the pochoir process, 4 printed in colours and finished by hand). Bound to style in brown morocco-backed contemporary red/brown pebble-grained cloth covered boards, the flat spine divided into five compartments by single gilt fillets, lettered in gilt in the second. A fine example of an early seedsman's sample book, containing plates from the publisher who invented the concept: D.M. Dewey. The colouring of the fruits and flowers is particularly strong. The album includes: 7 kinds of apples, 7 pear, 3 peach, 2 plum, 4 grape, 3 of different kinds of soft fruit, 1 chestnut, 3 trees, 1 decorative quince, 1 rose. Most plates place the subjects within a printed blue ornamental border, with the imprint, "Dewey's Pocket Series. Colored From Nature. Copyright secured 1872."Dellon Marcus Dewey "developed and promoted the nurseryman's color plate business in the late 1850s ... Besides individual plates, he also carried a selection of ready-made plate books. In the mid-1870s, Dewey disposed of his bookstore to concentrate entirely upon color plates and other supplies for nurserymen. An 1881 volume on the industries of Rochester termed his a unique enterprise ... His premises in the Reynolds Arcade were 'spacious and convenient, and here not less than thirty artists and others are employed in making drawings, paintings, etchings, photographs'" (K.S. Kabelac "Nineteenth Century Rochester Fruit and Flower Plates" in The University of Rochester Library Bulletin (1982), vol .XXXV. p.97). Cf. Quarto, disbound, extracted from The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, neat small uninked embossed library name stamp on general title page, very good copies, London, The Royal Society, 1870 - 1885. Lord Rayleigh [1842-1919], discoverer of Argon. His first researches were mainly mathematical, concerning optics and vibrating systems, but his later work ranged over almost the whole field of physics, covering sound, wave theory, colour vision, electrodynamics, electromagnetism, light scattering, flow of liquids, hydrodynamics, density of gases, viscosity, capillarity, elasticity, and photography. His patient and delicate experiments led to the establishment of the standards of resistance, current, and electromotive force; and his later work was concentrated on electric and magnetic problems. Lord Rayleigh was an excellent instructor and, under his active supervision, a system of practical instruction in experimental physics was devised at Cambridge, developing from a class of five or six students to an advanced school of some seventy experimental physicists. His Theory of Sound was published in two volumes during 1877-1878, and his other extensive studies are reported in his Scientific Papers - six volumes issued during 1889-1920. The Nobel Prize in Physics 1904 was awarded to Lord Rayleigh "for his investigations of the densities of the most important gases and for his discovery of argon in connection with these studies".
