        LIST OF ARTICLES WHICH WILL BE ON EXHIBITION IN KIOTO OF JAPAN FOR FIF

      , 1872. 1872. Paperback. Very Good. [KYOTO EXHIBITION] Kyoto Hakuran Kaisha. LIST OF ARTICLES WHICH WILL BE ON EXHIBITION IN KIOTO IN JAPAN FOR FIFTY DAYS FROM (MEIJI 5TH YEAR 3D MONTH 10TH DAY) APRIL 17TH 1872. HAKURANKAI HINMOKU Kyoto-fu, Meiji 5 [1872] The bilingual text of this 4 page 8vo. size pamphlet, issued upon the occasion of the second Exhibition at Kyoto in early 1872 is quite scarce and interesting. Issued about the same time as the HOTEL REGULATIONS AND RULES FOR THE DIRECTION OF EXHIBITORS and a year after the RULES FOR ADMITTING FOREIGNORS TO KIOTO, it is among the earliest instances for English language printing Japan for commercial purposes. It reproduces a cursive hand. A very unusual and interesting Exhibition item from the very beginning of Japanese-foreign interaction after the Restoration, when admission to the old capital and the interior of Japan in general was still being restricted. Published at about the same time [also by the Hakurankai (Exhibition Company)] as the English translation of Yamamoto's GUIDE TO KYOTO, which was typeset and printed in Osaka by a European printer resident there. The GUIDE had proclaimed itself the first English book published in Japan. The Yamamoto GUIDE may well have been the first book typeset in English, but this work, as well as the HOTEL REGULATIONS and THE RULES FOR ADMITTING FOREIGNERS in woodblock clearly precede it or are at the very least contemporary. Though many works had already been printed with English vocabulary words and phrases, this is the earliest we have seen to reproduce a full text or practical information meant for the non-Japanese speaker. Printed fukuro-toji, Japanese-style, the pamphlet is unbound. Interesting from the standpoint of printing in Japan and the history of International Exhibitions. Very good, scarce.

Expertly re-backed; some occasional finger-marking and light soiling; corners worn; else a very good copy of a scarce printing.         A System of Logic, Ratiocinative and Inductive. In two volumes

      London - Longmans, Green, Reader and Dyer, 1872. London - Longmans, Green, Reader and Dyer, 1872 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. John Stuart Mill FRSE (20 May 1806 8 May 1873) was a British philosopher, political economist and civil servant. He was also an influential contributor to social theory, political theory, and political economy. He has been called the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century Mill's conception of liberty justified the freedom of the individual in opposition to unlimited state control. He was a proponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by Jeremy Bentham. Hoping to remedy the problems found in an inductive approach to science, such as confirmation bias, he clearly set forth the premises of falsification as the key component in the scientific method. Mill was also a Member of Parliament and an important figure in liberal political philosophy. In this work, he formulated the five principles of inductive reasoning that are known as Mill's methods. Both letters docketed and annotated by recipient. With: (2). Motet, A[uguste] (1832- ). Duchenne (de Boulogne) et son oeuvre. loge. . . . Offprint from Ann. med.-psych., 8th series, 3 (1896). 8vo. 31 [1]pp. Paris: Masson et Cie., 1896. 244 x 158 mm. Original wrappers, tear in front wrapper. With: (3). Brissaud [Edouard] (1852-1909). L'oeuvre scientifique de Duchenne de Boulogne. Extract from Arch. d'electricite medicale exp. et clin. 7 (1899). 8vo. [448]-468pp. 242 x 162 mm. Disbound, several leaves loose, light foxing. Two letters from the founder of modern neurology in France, best known for his electrophysiological studies of the nerves and muscles; see G-M 614, 624, 4732, 4736, etc. In his first letter, Duchenne notifies his publisher that he will be returning several books lent to him by the Baillieres for the purpose of compiling an unnamed work-possibly the collection of articles published in the early 1870s under the title Contributions a l'Ètude du systeme nerveux et du systeme musculaire. Among the books Duchenne borrowed were a 2-volume work by Jaccoud (possibly his Traite de pathologie interne, 1870-71); a work by Holmes on the diseases of children (possibly Timothy Holmes' Surgical Treatment of the Diseases of Infancy and Childhood, 1868); Vol. III of Francois Longet's Traite de physiologie (3rd ed., 1868-69); and Leuret and Gratiolet's Anatomie comparee du systeme nerveux (1839-57). In the second letter Duchenne reminds the Baillieres that the Jaccoud work mentioned in his previous letter had been sent to him in error, and that the BailliËres had billed him twice for the Leuret-Gratiolet set. Accompanying these letters are two articles on Duchenne's life and scientific work.

        Zanzibar;

      London: Tinsley Brothers, , 1872. London: Tinsley Brothers, , 1872. City, Island, and Coast. 2 volumes, octavo (217 x 137 mm). Original red pebble-grain cloth, titles to spines gilt, ornamental panels to boards in blind, yellow endpapers. Volume I: frontispiece and 3 etched plates, one lithographic folding map, 4 etched plans. Volume II: frontispiece and 6 etched plates. Pencil underlining and marginalia throughout both volumes. Spines a little sunned, ends and corners slightly rubbed and bumped, mild foxing to prelims and endmatter. Volume I: minor chip to margin of frontispiece, light dampstains to margins of plates, short split to margin of map, closed tear to map professionally repaired with archival tape to verso, text block lightly cracked (pp. 160-1; 288-9; 400-1), but still firm. First edition, in the second issue cloth, of what Casada considers to be the author's most important African-related work. During the expedition to East Africa in 1857-9, Burton was delayed in Zanzibar for close to half a year. During this delay, he 'compiled an enormous quantity of notes about Zanzibar, including a book manuscript, which he entrusted to an official of the East India Company for dispatch to the Royal Geographical Society' (ODNB). The intention was likely that these notes were to be published already in 1860 (Preface, Volume I, p. ix). However, neither notes nor manuscript reached the Royal Geographic Society, a state of which Burton learnt in March 1859, upon arriving back in Zanzibar. Fortunately, in 1865 the manuscript was located in a strong box belonging to the Bombay branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. Apart from detailing the journey to Zanzibar, Volume I is mainly concerned with various aspects of the region, including climate, geography, flora and fauna, industry, and the ethnic makeup of the population. Meanwhile, Volume II covers the journey to Mombasa and up the Pangani river, an excursion begun in early January 1857 and abandoned in April as both Burton and Speke were brought down with fever and dysentery; this volume also gives a brief overview of the East African expedition.

        Autographed Letter Signed

      Washington, D.C.: , 1872 Washington, D.C., 1872. unbound. 4 pages (front and back) with each two-page spread measuring 10 x 16 inches, marked "Private," Washington, D.C., April 12, 1872. Rare letter by the American politician and negotiator to the former Confederate States of America Treasurer Tyler, in preparation for Richardson's successful trip to Geneva to obtain damages from Great Britain, letting Tyler know of a Judgeship opportunity available to him by the means of Richardson's resignation, in part: "...In any article that is written in the newspaper perhaps it will be well to state the fact of the immediate cause of my resignation, the desire of [Secretary of the Treasury] Boutwell to have me manage the refunding of the national debt after my successful operation of the hundred million negotiation in London...Now I hope you will be my successor and you must attend to it immediately and persistently..." It has long been speculated that the job opportunity and Tyler's assistance to the government were linked, and crucial to the successful outcome of the Alabama Claims Commission.

Dodgson, author, mathematician, and photographer, whose writing meant a great deal to him; writing was the main course by which he could do something for others, to fulfil a deep religious desire to contribute something to humanity—it was his offering to God. After resigning his mathematical lectureship in 1881, at the age of forty-nine (he retained his studentship and resident privileges at Christ Church to the end), he devoted himself primarily to his writing. Often standing at his upright desk (he calculated that he could stand and write for ten hours a day), he turned out a myriad of works. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was followed in late 1871 by its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, and in 1876 by that longest and most revered nonsense poem in English, The Hunting of the Snark.       London: Macmillan and Co., 1872.. London: Macmillan and Co., 1872.. Early Edition.. Half-Leather. Very Good. Early edition, 'Fortieth Thousand' on title leaf. Octavo, rebound at an early date [1907] in half red calf over marbled boards, recently rebacked with full red calf spine with raised bands, gilt tiles and rules and decorations within the compartments. [14] + 192 pp [preliminaries: blank, half-title leaf, frontispiece, title leaf, contents, prelimiary poem]. Two early inscriptions on recto of frontispiece leaf: "To Master Arnold Hotson with Auntie's love Nov 6th 1873" (and) "Rebound for Dennis II Auntie A.T.P. / Uncle HSP. } Baltimore, Xmas 1907". Small damp-stain to upper corners of first few leaves in margins only. Mild small stains in the text, light fraying to fore-edge of front free endpaper, wear to corners of the binding (not the rebacking); a very good copy.         Ruy Blas.

Albin Michel, 1939).
