        Originalt brev.

Originalt håndskrevet brev, dateret 10/11 1872. Kbhvn. I 1872 udkom 'Arternes Oprindelse'. Titlen på den næste store bog krævede dog lidt finpudsning: Den endelige titel blev 'Menneskets Afstamning og Parringsvalget', der udkom 1874-1875. Og imens skrev han mesterværkerne Mogens og Fru Marie Grubbe

A very clean and bright copy.ìKneeland [1821-1888], a professor of zoology and physiology and secretary of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from its founding in 1865 until 1878, produced one of the better guide books to the Yosemite region. It is an especially attractive book due to the inclusion of an excellent series of mounted photographic images. The book is based on the authorís first visit to Yosemite Valley in July 1870. In addition to serving as a guide book, it forms a narrative of his trip from Boston to Yosemite and return. Kneeland made every effort to obtain current and accurate information and each of the later editions of the guide incorporates new material. The second edition adds ëThe Yosemite in 1872í and ëThe Recent Earthquake in Yosemite.í Though not identified by name, the account of the 1872 earthquake and much of ëThe Yosemite in 1872í is based on information indirectly supplied by John Muir. It is the first appearance of Muirís writings in a bookî (Currey & Kruska).Cowan, p. 333 (third edition). Currey & Kruska 225. Farquhar 10b. Kimes & Kimes 3, 5, 7, and 8. Rocq 5217.HBS 64799.$1,500

Through The Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There

London: Macmillan and Co., 1872 Illustrated by John Tenniel. First edition, first printing, with "wade" instead of "wabe" to page 21. Finely bound in full crimson Morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, with five raised bands to the spine, lettered in gilt, spine compartments and bands ruled in gilt, boards ruled in gilt, triple ruled circle panel with an illustration of the Red Queen to the front board, triple ruled circle panel with an illustration of the White Queen to the rear panel, gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt, green endpapers with floral pattern stamped in gilt, original cloth bound in at rear. About fine, with a former owner's 1872 inscription to the half-title, a few hints of scattered and light spotting to the otherwise fresh pages. A beautiful copy of a scarce book in a fine Morocco binding. Through the Looking Glass is Lewis Carroll's sequel to his popular children's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). In this story, which represents the child protagonist's journey from adolescence to adulthood, Alice ventures into a fantasy world through the mirror above her fireplace. Just as Alice relies on the imagery of playing cards, Through the Looking Glass is laden with chess imagery; Alice steps into the fantasy world as a white pawn on a giant chess board. While making her way to be crowned queen, she runs into many of Carroll's beloved characters, including Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Walrus and the Carpenter, and the Red Queen. Additionally, this text employs a mirror motif, with many backward-printed texts and scenarios that appear to be the reverse of scenes from Alice. Throughout the novel, Carroll includes nonsense poetry, including the playful "Jabberwocky." Like Alice, Through the Looking Glass is illustrated by John Tenniel. Carroll originally intended to write this sequel as early as 1866, but had trouble persuading Tenniel to illustrate it. Writer and artist had a somewhat volatile relationship as a result of their mutual perfectionism: just as the true first edition of Alice was suppressed because of unsatisfactory illustrations, Through the Looking Glass's illustrations were heavily edited. Tenniel demanded the removal of a character that was too difficult to illustrate, whereas Carroll replaced Tenniel's "Jabberwock" plate with an image of the White Knight, which was less frightening, as a frontispiece.. Illus. by Tenniel, John. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine.

Ett Ã¥r i stilla hafvet reseminnen frÃ¥n Patagonien , Chili, Peru, Californien, Britiska Columbia och Oceanien

Stockholm: Lith. Art. Anstalt, 1872. Quarto, with 12 tinted lithographic plates; a very good copy in original decorated boards, backstrip and endpapers renewed. Scarce and finely illustrated voyage account, including handsome lithographed portraits of the Hawaiian monarchs Kamehameha the Fourth and Kamehameha the Fifth. The author, Adolf Ekelöf, was a young Swedish lieutenant who sailed on the English frigate Zealous to the Pacific in 1867. In addition to descriptions of California and British Columbia, this book is particularly interesting for its Pacific material, with significant entries on Hawaii, Tahiti, and other South Sea Islands. Unusually, Ekelof provides both the music and words to an Hawaiian Folk Hymn and a Tahitian National Melody. The lithographic plates are well rendered - some are clearly produced from portrait photographs while others are based on marine and landscape sketches. Of the twelve plates, seven are of Hawaiian and Tahitian subjects. In addition to the plate of the Hawaiian monarchs mentioned above, the book includes portraits of Queen Pomare of Tahiti and a coastal scene at Waikiki.

Diary of the Late Rajah of Kolhapoor, during his visit to Europe in 1870. Edited by Capt. Edward W. West.

      - London, Smith Elder 1872. Octavo green morocco by Mansell, elaborately decorated, with the arms of the Maharaja on the front cover; chromolitho portrait, a mounted litho portrait and a mounted woodbury type. Some scattered spots; a handsome, fresh copy. With a printed presentation leaf finished by hand presenting the book to Saville Lumley - John Savile Lumley the diplomat, not the younger illustrator. The special presentation issue of a book that was doubtless a privately funded production in the first place; the uncoloured litho portrait doesn't seem to be included in the more prosaic issue. Upon the Raja's succession in 1866, at the age of 16, West was appointed his governor and the first thing he did was remove him from the "pernicious moral atmosphere ever to be found in a native Palace." His education then seems to consist of learning billiards, croquet and a bit of cricket; he was given "selections of books" and encouraged to read newspapers. Thus prepared they set off to see England, the first reigning Hindu prince to do so, in 1870. Having conquered England, socially, he died in Florence and, after some fast politicking to sidestep Florentine law, was cremated on the banks of the Arno. The woodburytype is a portrait of a splendidly befrocked but anxious looking child, his eight year old successor.
