Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Cosima Wagner geb. Liszt").

[Eckersdorf, Schloß] "Fantaisie", 21. VI. 1872.. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo..

Ruy Blas. Drame en 5 actes, en vers

New edition, original part because of the increased preface entitled "To France 1872" published on the occasion of the revival of the play at the Odeon on 19 February 1872 Binding half brown grief back with five nerves, covers preserved. Exceptional sending the author to his mistress Juliette Drouet, "first copy the feet of my lady." From its inception to its late opening, the Ruy Blas history is interwoven with that of Juliette Drouet. Recluse home throughout the writing of the play, Juliet was the first reader, August 12, 1838 (Hugo finished writing 11). She immediately falls in love with this romantic drama that Hugo promises the title role alongside Frederick Lemaitre: "What a miracle that your room, my poor beloved, and you're good to me to have done admiring the first ! I had never heard anything so beautiful. I do not even except your other masterpieces. It is a rich, magnificence, dazzled (...) Oh my sunshine, you blinded me for a long time. " Soon, Juliet knows the play by heart, some fiercely referring to the relationship of the poet and actress, "Madam, under your feet, in the dark, a man is there who loves you, lost in the night that the veil; Suffering, earthworm in love with a star; Who will give for his soul, if necessary; And that is dying down when you shine above "(Act II, Scene 2). August 15, Hugo confirms him the role of the queen. Juliet could not hope for a better proof of love: "I see the glory, happiness, love and adoration, all in gigantic dimensions and impossible ..." Unfortunately, far from the glory predict expected This new mark the beginning of the open Adele, who was previously little involvement in her husband's adulterous relationship war. At the end of the summer, Adele writing to the theater, "I see the success of the compromise part (...) because the role of the Queen was given to a person who was a member of the fuss made to Mary Tudor . (...) The opinion (...) is unfavorable (...) the talent of Miss Juliet. (...) This lady is said to have relations with my husband. - While personally convinced that this noise is completely devoid of merit, (...) the result is the same. (...) I have some hope that you (...) give the role to someone else. ". This will be the mistress of Frederick Lemaitre will inherit. Juliette does not hide his dismay: "I carry the grief of a beautiful and admirable role that is dead to me forever. (...) I have more than you can imagine grief. "And even if Ruy Blas does not meet the expected success, his passion for the play remains intact:" I shed my blood for you, for your part. " On 5 December 1867, when the Odeon planning a revival of the play, Napoleon III made the ban because "it is not necessary that the scandal of Hernani is renewed." Juliette is still affected by this injustice that Hugo, as evidenced by his voluminous correspondence. His letters on the subject are collected in the book by Paul Souchon (Around Ruy Blas. Unpublished Letters of Juliette Drouet To Victor Hugo, Albin Michel, 1939). For years, she campaigned for his rehabilitation and, when Ruy Blas 1872 has finally met at the Odeon, and says she attends every step of this resurrection. So at the end of the first reading of Hugo comedians, January 2, 1872: "Victory, my beloved great! Deep and enthusiastic audience with all your emotions. (...) Ruy Blas from beginning to end is the masterpiece of masterpieces. I'm out of there dazzled, delighted, loving you, admire you and adore you as the first day I heard you. It was about me, just now at home, who was the most moved and transported to the author and the play. I am ashamed to tell you so bad, but I yield to the needs of my heart full of your genius and love. Here you are, my loved, I hasten to kiss your wings and feet. "With Sarah Bernhardt in the role of the queen, the play is a triumph that will grow over the performances. The day after the first, Juliette says that expected for more than thirty years consecration: "You see, my beloved, as I told you the truth about the amazing and wonderful enthusiasm of the spectators yesterday. Never you don '[en] have been able to have and do bigger. It was a general frenzy that was increasing with each verse. Your sublime poetry subdued all souls and the fragrance of worship out of all hearts we felt. The thunderous applause was so loud and so continuous that gushed electric sparks from all hands. (...) As for me, I feel in this blessed month renewal of love and I think all my sweet memories bloom again and perfume my soul with happiness. And I would submit to your feet divine bouquet. "It was Victor Hugo who finally deposits" at the feet of [his] lady "this masterpiece of romanticism as a token of their mythical love. Michel Lévy frères Paris 1872 12x19cm relié

Report of a reconnaissance of the basin of the upper Yellowstone in 1871. Letter from the Secretary of War, accompanying an engineer report of a reconnaissance of the Yellowstone River in 1871. April 18, 1872. 42nd Congress, 2d Session. Ex.Doc. No. 66. Senate

[Washington, D.C.]: [Government Printing Office], 1872. First edition. Modern brown cloth with gilt titles. A very good+ copy, small bookplate, with expert repair to bottom edge of first leaf, large folding map skillfully silked on reverse at each fold, in a fine modern binding. 8vo. Illus. with a folding lithographed map. 69 x 30.5 cm. (27 x 12 inches). The first recorded visit to Yellowstone Park was made by John Colter in 1810 when he took refuge there from hostile Indians. No one believed his story of what he saw there, nor did they believe that of the next visitor, Joseph Meek, in 1829. Finally, in the 1850's the region was described in considerable detail in the writings of Father DeSmet, the famous Jesuit missionary, who had obtained most of his information from the mountain man, Jim Bridger. In 1859, Capt. W. F. Reynolds led a government expedition to the area, but it brought back little information and was discredited by a public dead set on not believing what was there. Finally, in 1870, N. P. Langford and H. D. Washburn led a well-equipped, thorough expedition that not only established the facts about the region but also led directly to the creation of Yellowstone National Park on March 1, 1872. Langford was appointed the first Superintendent of the Park, which was the Federal government's first program for preserving any extensive area of the national lands for public use. The magnificent park included over two million acres in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, and included some of the most beautiful and breathtaking area in the country," Jenkins (JJ100-299). Includes the scarce map of the upper Yellowstone with much detail of the area surveyed. Provenance: From the library of Kenneth E. Hill, with his bookplate. Howes B145. Wheat Transmississippi 1220. Eberstadt 134-445.

        LONDON A Pilgrimage

London: Grant & Co., 1872. First edition of ?"Doré?'s chef d?'oeuvre?" (Bland). With one hundred and eighty fantastical engraved illustrations by Gustave Doré, many of which are full size plates. Large Folio, publisher?'s fine binding of full maroon pebbled cloth, the spine, lettered and with decorations in gilt, the upper cover completely decorated in gilt in an all-over design. [xiv], xii, 191 pp. An unusually fine and attractive copy, very sturdy and especially handsome. FIRST EDITION OF WHAT MANY CONSIDER TO BE DORE'S MOST IMPORTANT AND FANTASTICAL WORK. This is also one of Doré?'s less common works, rarely encountered and a superb example of his talent. ?"Doré?'s devastating realization of the contrast of wealth and poverty in a modern metropolis makes LONDON one of the great illustrated books of the world. The English edition antedates the French by four years, and indeed it is a handsomer book?" (Ray). Ruari McLean, in his book VICTORIAN BOOK DESIGN, says of it: ?"...perhaps the finest and most original book of monochrome wood engraving published in London during this period was the work of a Frenchman, Gustave Doré. This was his LONDON, A PILGRIMAGE... [Doré?'s illustrations] make the English illustrations of the sixties look puny.?" The engraved illustrations and accompanying text show many aspects of the city, but dwell on the picturesque clutter and the squalor of the poorer districts. ?'Jerrold, whose text accompanies the plates, was a well known London journalist who conceived the work and accompanied the artist in exploring London--sometimes with special police protection. Doré was able to explore the vitality and ruthlessness of Victorian London and depict these conditions through his extraordinary graphics.?'

"Blick auf die Alpspitze" originales Ölgemälde auf Malpappe ca. 75x62cm; rechts unten signiert; um 1910 [Maße im etwas lädierten zeitgenössischen Rahmen 90x76cm.]

(a. d. Br. v. 3.       Chicago. 1872.. [4],110pp. plus twelve mounted albumen photographs. Contemporary brown morocco, stamped in gilt, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Some light shelf wear. Internally clean. Near fine. An interesting book with original mounted photographs, produced to commemorate the Chicago fire of 1871. The text gives a history of the fire in a series of essays, each signed by a different author, while the photographs record the devastation in detail. They are juxtaposed with in-text illustrations of the photographed locales before they were ruined by the Great Fire. The final article discusses the Relief Committee and the reponse to the disaster by the community. Others talk in very personal terms about how one person was able to save his home, others burnt out. In human terms a real disaster, and one to which anyone can relate. The text is important because it documents with the advantage of recent memory the impacts of the fire on Chicagoans. The particularly striking element of this work is the photographic record it provides of the Fire. It is clear that these photographs were taken fairly soon after the disaster. The ruins of the Fred, Leiter & Co. store on what it notes as the corner of State and Washington Streets causes the viewer to wonder how someone on foot could navigate the rubble, let alone a carriage driving down the street. The images capture the true scope of the disaster in a way that words cannot. Not in THE TRUTHFUL LENS. Stamped in gilt on the rear board with the name of William H. Warrington, the proprietor of the Chicago company Vulcan Iron Works. Scarce.

        The Martyrdom of Man

London: Trübner & Co., 1872. 8vo. viii, 544 pages. Publisher's original green cloth tooled and titled in gilt to spine. Ownership inscription to front endpaper. Small spot to front board, minor shelf wear and foxing to final leafs, otherwise in very good and original condition, bright, clean, with solid spine. A pleasing, exceedingly scarce volume. Both viscerally contested and exuberantly applauded, immediately upon publication, and for years to follow, this revolutionary and once radical book is seldom seen today, yet is replete with subjects still pertinent, these being the role of Islam, the history of the slave trade, the evolution of mankind, as well as the impact of war, religion, and liberty. Reade's work became reputed as a sort of "substitute bible for secularists," attempting to trace the development of Western civilization in terms analogous to those used in the natural sciences, also presenting philosophies in support of political liberalism and social Darwinism. The secular "universal" history of the Western world, is divided into four chapters titled as follows. "War" discusses the imprisonment of men's bodies, "Religion" that of their minds, "Liberty" likens a history of European politics and intellect, and finally, "Intellect" puts forth a theory on the origin and development of the universe. The concluding chapter provoked enormous controversy, and as such, the book was condemned by several magazines, owing to Reade's "outspoken attack on Christian dogma". Immediately after its release, in 1872 William Gladstone, the former British Prime Minister, denounced the work as one of several "irreligious works" which also included works by Auguste Comte, Herbert Spencer, and David Friedrich Strauss. On the other hand, the book "drew attention to the immense tale of suffering and waste involved in the theory of evolution". V. S. Pritchett lauded The Martyrdom of Man as "the one, the outstanding, dramatic, imaginative historical picture of life, to be inspired by Victorian science". Since Reade had, by Victorian standards, a relatively sympathetic account of African history, the book was also approvingly cited by W. E. B. Du Bois in his books The Negro (1915) and The World and Africa (1947). English-born South African politician and businessman, Cecil Rhodes said that the book "made me what I am". Other admirers included H. G. Wells, Sir Winston Churchill, Harry Johnston, George Orwell, Susan Isaacs, A. A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin, and Michael Foot. In "The Sign of the Four" Holmes describes it as "one of the most remarkable books ever penned". . First Edition. Very Good.
