[Polo, Marco] Yule, Colonel Henry
London: John Murray, 1871. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Two volumes, 8vo, pp. clxi, 409; xvii, 525, indexed, extensively illustrated with maps (some folding), plates, facsimiles, and illustrations in the text. An attractive, near fine set bound in three-quarter red morocco with five raised bands, gilt ornaments on spines, top edges gilt. Corners rubbed, gift inscription (dated 1873) on each front flyleaf, folding plate of "The Ruc's Egg" laid in to Volume II rather than in a front pocket as originally issued, and with some archival repairs to the verso. The work won him lasting fame and both the gold medal of the Italian Geographical Society and the founder's medal of the Royal Geographical Society. Cordier 1983.

Aristophanes, Friedrich Heinrich Bothe
Sumtibus Librariae Hahnianae, Lipsiae - Hardcover; See book description; No jacket; 8vo - over 7.75" - 9.75" tall; a fair reading copy; Aristophanes' text is in the original Greek, footnotes are predominantly in Latin (with some Greek); brown cloth boards have rubbing to edges and spine and a small split in the cloth at top of front board/spine join; binding is firm; the book is printed with a page of text opposite a blank page, and there are EXTENSIVE underlining of the Greek text and EXTENSIVE handwritten notes throughout the book (on almost every blank page) in various hands (some owners had exquisite handwriting, others did not) which increases the interest and utility of the book and is also a showcase of C19th English Public School education; a considerable feature of interest is the owner who has inscribed the flyleaf: 'John Bain Sept 16th 1871. Winchester'; research indicates that a John Bain (born 1854) attended Winchester College (the dates fit) who went on to represent Oxford University in the 1877 FA Cup Final and in the same year became the first Scottish-born player to represent the England team in a football match played against Scotland at the Kennington Oval - the first international football match in which Scotland beat England; although qualifying as a barrister Bain spent most of his life teaching at Marlborough College, another of England's great Public Schools; please note that while this identification cannot be confirmed it is certainly plausible. Brockhaus, Leipzig
Brockhaus, Leipzig. VALMONT, Victor.
Tinsley Brothers 1871. FIRST EDITION. 2 vols. Half titles. Much of the text-block of vol. I has been heavily creased at some time. Orig. blue cloth, boards & spines blocked in black, spines lettered in gilt. Apart from sl. signs of removal of small labels to spines, a nice bright copy. Not in Sadleir or Wolff; BL only on Copac. A tale of the siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian War, 1870-71. A review of the book in The Tablet comments that ?though M.Valmont calls his work a novel, there is enough of truth woven into the story to make it appear more of the nature of an historical romance?. DARWIN, Charles.
London: John Murray, 1871 - 2 volumes, octavo (185 x 124 mm). Early 19th-century red half calf by Zaehnsdorf, gilt titles to brown labels to spines, spines decorated in gilt in compartments, red cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Binder's stamps to front free endpaper versos. Spines lightly faded, very minor rubbing to extremities, head of front joint of vol. II just starting; an excellent set. Numerous engravings in text. First edition, second issue (with the list of works on the verso of the title leaf of Vol. II). It was in this work that the word "evolution" appears for the first time, preceding its appearance in the sixth edition of The Origin of Species the following year. Darwin had hoped that one of his supporters might tackle the thorny question of human evolution, but was forced to face the logic of his own theory himself. Darwin deviated from his ostensible subject of mankind to describe sexual selection in the animal kingdom, enabling him to answer those who saw peacock tails as an expression of divine aesthetics. Darwin also set out a definite family tree for humans, tracing their affinity with the Old World monkeys, and laid out his views on the evolutionary origins of morality and religion. "The Descent, understood by Darwin as a sequel to the Origin, was written with a maturity and depth of learning that marked Darwin's status as an élite gentleman of science" (ODNB). This set is bound without the publisher's advertisements. From the library of W. A. Foyle (1885–1963), at Beeleigh Abbey, with his leather book label on the front pastedowns. … [Click Below for Full Description]

BONNAMY (MICHEL) :

Attilio Brunialti
Treves, Milano, 1871. In 16 (cm 12 x 19), pp. XXVIII + 512. [Click Below for Full Description]

Op 18 juli is 'Our Princess Mary's marriage' (...) 'It is not a gay wedding, every circumstance against it.' Even sympathiek als hij begint, eindigt de brief: 'you know, nobody can think of you more, and love you more than/ your devoted friend/ Sophia'.Koningin Sophie, eenzaam in haar paleis Huis ten Bosch, besteedde haar tijd aan het schrijven van vele brieven. Toch worden ze zelden aangeboden.

EMMA LOUISA CHITTY
WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA OLD SALEM NC: 1871. Manuscript. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. On offer is a super, charming relic of southern literary musings and reflections dated 1871 through 1883 handwritten by noted and beloved teacher who taught Latin, mathematics and needlework at the Salem Female Academy in Old Salem, North Carolina, Emma Louisa Chitty (1848-1919). The 23 year old Moravian woman from the enclave in Old Salem she is best remembered as a pioneering doll maker and creator of the rare cloth doll known as "Miss Chitty". Additionally, Emma Chitty was instrumental in the design of the original "Maggie Bessie doll", an iconic doll named after Old Salem Moravian sisters Margaret Gertrude Pfohl (Maggie) and Caroline Elizabeth Pfohl (Bessie). The approximately 60 page 8.5 x 6.5 book features about 27 poems and other literary musings written by Emma including Colonel Henry T. Thompson's famous poem, "Lee to the Rear". Known as the poet laureate of the Confederacy, Thompson's verse memorializes the Civil War Confederate hero Robert E. Lee. Ms. Chitty's inclusion of Thompson's poem reflects the Pro-Confederate sentiment still very much in evidence then throughout the South. Miss Chitty's writings here were also penned during the time of her now legendary doll making endeavors. HISTORICAL NOTES: 1. Originally founded in 1772 as the "Little Girls School", the institution changed its name in 1866 to the Salem Female Academy. The school began awarding college diplomas in 1890 and in 1907 the name was officially changed to Salem Academy and College. To this day, both Salem Acad … [Click Below for Full Description]

At the same time the paper is the first to present his discoveries in a western language. In the paper he described and predicted the properties of a number of undiscovered elements - three of them were discovered in his lifetime. His periodic table was more complete than any of the preceding ones, and more thoroughly founded on experiment. The periodicity of the elements he himself formulated as "Elements placed according to the value of their atomic weights present a clear periodicity of properties."The offered paper is the German translation of his paper which was issued in "Journal of the Russian Chemical Society", vol. 3, pp. 25-56, the same journal in which he first announced his discovery (vol. 1, pp.66-77 (1869) )."In March 1871, two years after his discovery of the law, … [Click Below for Full Description]

The earliest citation for the Chinook Jargon is George Gibbs' 1863 edition for the Smithsonian Institution, but even there the preface cites an earlier version furnished by a B. R. Mitchell of the U.S. Navy, also for the Smithsonian. The present edition is most likely a recent reprint of the first Hibben edition around 1871. As trading developed throughout the Pacific Northwest, this little volume was in high demand. It was reprinted over fifty times, this being one of the earlier editions. [Australia; Theater]
Sydney: Caxton Steam Machine Printing Office, 1871. Wraps. Very good - condition. Scarce biographical booklet, the only one on Ristori published in Sydney, describing the life of the Italian actress Adelaide Ristori, renowned as a tragedienne.Ristori visited Australia with a large Italian entourage for 4 months in 1875, performing in Ballarat, Melbourne and Sydney, and this booklet was likely published as a promotional piece for the tour. This Australian booklet is not dated, although Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia assigns a date ca. 1871. It was translated from Italian into English to be used as an advertising piece for Ristori's 1875 Australia tour. It was published at the Caxton printing office, which was functioning under that name until 1876. Adelaide Ristori (1822 - 1906) toured widely, including Paris (1855, 1856), London, Madrid (1857), and the United States (1866). The booklet describes Ristori's American visits: the first tour was mainly in the North, the events of the Civil War making a stop in New Orleans impossible. Ristori did eventually visit there, reciting pieces at the grand bazaar, following which she "had to accept a sumptuous supper, which was attended by the leading people of the South, headed by the generals Beauregard and Lee". (p19). In 1875, after one of her American tours, she traveled to Australia, where her company's lavish productions of historical drama were performed in Italian. Ristori performed the roles of Medea, Mary Stuart, and the title role in Elizabeth, Queen of England, written especially for he … [Click Below for Full Description]

Provenienz - Sechenov (Secenov, Setschenow), Ivan Michailovich (Mikhajlovic):
St. Petersburg, Trubnikova, 1871. II, 179 S. 8°. OBroschur. - [Moscow, University Printer], 1871. 8vo. Contemporary marbled boards, recently rebacked with calf and raised bands, spine ruled and lettered in gilt (in English), printed front wrapper of green paper bound in, contained in: Russkii Vestnik, volume XCIII, on pages 580 to 661; edges worn; internally, apart from occasional light spotting, very good; provenance: bookplate of Coburg Bibliothek with heraldic bookplate printed in red and black inside front cover. This is the first edition of an anonymous travelogue of a journey from Semipalatinsk (now Semey, Kazakhstan) along the Russian-Chinese border. All we could find out about the author, who is denoted in the list of articles as '- o -', was the wife of a general; they were both members of the St. Petersburg nobility and stationed in Semipalatinsk. Their names are not mentioned throughout the article except their 10 year old son's, Kostya. No official purpose of the journey is given, and the character was not that of a scientific expedition. The author refers to earlier and similar trips having been undertaken by the couple. Since they visited several military posts during their journey, we can assume that the general had the task of inspecting the border of the Russian and Chinese Empires and assess trade, economy and smuggling in the region. A fascinating and rare travelogue covering parts of Eastern Kazakhstan and the Chinese border. The magazine Russian Messenger had been founded in 1856 by a group of liberal writers and scholars, among them the editor Mikhail Katkov; luminaries such as Turgeniev, Tolstoy and Dostoievsk … [Click Below for Full Description]
