Millais, John Everett, English painter (1829-1896).
(Scotland), 22. X, 1871. 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. To the Saxon artist Ludwig Gruner (1801-82), long active in Britain and then director of the Royal Cabinet of Engravings in Dresden: "Dear Sir. I am delighted to hear so good an opinion of my Holbein. I bought it without a moment's hesitation upon its merits. If there has been any published criticism on the pictures during the Holbein exhibition I should very much like to have it, as I should like my judgement supported. I have read Mr. Robinson's letters in the Times, but of course I can form no opinion without seeing the two pictures (the Madonna's). Some day I hope to visit Dresden and see your picture. My wife desires me to send her best regards to you [...] I am staying now in Scotland but when the picture is in my house I will return you your acknowledgement of its being borrowed for the Dresden exhibition."

Cunningham, Robert Oliver
Edinburgh: Edmonston and Douglas, 1871. xvi,[2],517pp. plus twenty-one lithographic plates (views of the region and natural history subjects) and colored folding map. Original green cloth, spine gilt. Some slight spotting on binding. Hinges a bit weak but holding. Occasional light foxing on text leaves. Still a very good copy, with neat bookplate of George Bennett (see below) and of noted collector Kenneth Hill. A rare account of an exploration of the Strait of Magellan. Cunningham was appointed naturalist aboard the Nassau, a steamer sent to survey the Strait and the adjacent channels. This book contains a narrative of the voyage and natural history descriptions. Cunningham's own interest was in the ornithology of the region (after the voyage he published various pieces in the IBIS on the subject), but he also discusses the botany of the area, mentioning his collections of plants in the Royal Herbarium, Kew, and promising articles on the reptiles, amphibia, fishes, mollusca, and crustacea in LINNEAN TRANSACTIONS. His natural history connections were evidently impeccable, since he acknowledges the help of Hooker, Huxley, Newton, Flower, Sclater, Salvin, Gray, Gunther, and Baird. The folding map shows Patagonia, with an inset of the Strait of Magellan. Though the present copy bears the bookplate of noted collector Kenneth Hill, there is no copy listed in the catalogue of the Hill Collection of Pacific Voyages at the University of California at San Diego. This copy also bears the bookplate of George Bennett, M.D., a Sydney doctor and leading figure in colonial science, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ruskin, John
London: George Allen, 1871 onward. First. Full calf leather with 6 raised bands and dark leather labels with author, title and date applied. Marbled endpapers. All bound similar and signed Ramage. 9 volumes, 6 with small "Byrdcliffe" bookplate inside front cover. Flors Clavigera described as follows: 8 bound volumes with NO Index volume. The books were printed between 1871 and 1884. Ariadne Florentina described as follows: Published in 1876. Numerous plates within. Lecture I: The Art of Engraving; II The Relation of Engraving to Other Arts in Florence; III The Technics of Wood and Engraving; IV The Technics of Metal Engraving; V Design in the German Schools of Engraving (Holbein and Durer); VI Design in the Florentine Schools of Engraving (Sandro Botticell). As lovelly as this set of books is, it is further enhanced with the bookplate of Byrdcliffe being present in 6 of the 9 volumes. Byrdcliffe was the Utopian Arts and Crafts Community in Woodstock, NY founded by Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead at the turn of the 20th Century. This set was in the community reference library there, and represents an incredible link between Ruskin, Whitehead and the American Arts and Crafts Movement. The Binder, John Ramage, was born in London in 1836. When Ramage came out of his apprenticeship in 1856, he took the unusual step for an English binder of going to Paris and working under Lortic, one of the leading French binders of the day. In 1860 Ramage returned to Britain and purchased the Edinburgh business of Alexander Banks Jnr, stating in the 1861 census returns that he employed 8 men, 3 boys, … [Click Below for Full Description]

DARWIN, Charles
London: John Murray, 1871. FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE. Green half morocco and cloth boards; excellent condition. First edition, second issue, of Darwin's classic work on comparative anatomy. By comparing the physiological and psychological aspects of man and ape, he fills in what had been merely suggested in the Origin: that man's ancestor, if still alive today, would be classified among the primates and on a lower scale than the apes. The last chapter is an added essay on sexual selection, the superior chances of mating that some individuals of one sex have over their rivals. The essay ends with the famous and often misquoted statement, "Man still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin." "The word 'evolution' occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin's works, on page 2 of the first volume of the first edition" (Freeman, p.129).

Adels, Heinrich Friedrich Johann
Oldenburg: NP, ND. Original artwork. Loose leaf. g- to vg. Unique collection of 44 fully rendered aquarelles for stained glass windows, with 21 signed or initialed by the artist and dated, 5 armorial blueprints, sketch and gouache, 2 original paintings, 12 documents (letters, exhibition catalogues, celebratory programs from various decorative arts associations), and 79 original silver gelatin and albumen prints from the lives of German ornamental painter and stained glass designer Heinrich Friedrich Johann Adels (1871-1955), and his father Friedrich Wilhelm (1845-1914). Heinrich Adels' father - Friedrich Wilhelm Adels - was a renowned painter from Oldenburg where he taught art to students such as Johannes von Wicht (1888-1970) who, later on, became a successful artist in the United States. Together with Wilhelm Mohrmann (also a native of Oldenburg), Friedrich Wilhelm Adels was involved in the painted decorations of the somptuous Grand Ducal Court Theatre built by architect Gerhard Schnitger (1841-1917). His son Heinrich Adels attended the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Arts and Crafts) in Dsseldorf where he earned high honors. Following this, he applied to study at the Royal Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin where he was accepted. Among his teachers were Otto Lessing (1846-1912), a prominent German Historicist sculptor whose work largely shaped the appearance of Berlin in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and professor Ernst Ewald* (1836-1904). Heinrich Adels won a 1st and a 2nd prize in the 1891/1892 academic year. After graduation, he settled in Munich until 18 … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Pappeinband der Zeit) mit rotem RSchild (Bibliothekseinbände des ausgehenden 19. Jhs.). - Erste Ausgabe. - Dinse 548. - Kainbacher I, S. 115. - Embacher 249f. [Click Below for Full Description]
