MacDONALD, George
George Routledge & Sons: New York, 1871. Small octavo, original purple decorated cloth stamped in black, gilt, and blind, all edges gilt, pinkish cream endpapers. pp viii, 378, [2]. 76 illustrations in text by Arthur Hughes. Professionally resewn and rebacked, original endpapers intact, all spine stamping completely intact; inner hinges skillfully repaired, scarcely noticable; light spine sunning; Xmas, 1871, ink gift inscription on front free endpaper; English trade binder's ticket (Burn & Co.) on rear pastedown; only minor rubbing to the gilt picture on the front cover; else a fine bright copy, with much less fading to the spine than is usual with this colour, the rebacking skillfully done and scarcely noticable, and the text quite clean and unworn. The US edition was made from a separate British printing, by Ogden & Co. In the first issue of the UK binding, with the "A.S." spine imprint, gilt framing on the front cover, and the publisher's device within rules in blind on rear cover. Sadleir 1474c errs in his identification of the US first edition [It's not often you get to say "Sadleir was wrong"]. Not in Wolff (who was a serious MacDonald collector). The author's most famous book, a cornerstone in any fairy tale collection, and a high spot of Victorian children's literature, with excellent illustrations by MacDonald's good friend the famous Pre-Raphaelite Arthur Hughes. Their collaborations are "the despair of the collector, for they are exceedingly scarce and collectors of George MacDonald are exceedingly keen. DARWIN, Charles
John Murray, 1871. Green half morocco and cloth boards; excellent condition. First edition, second issue, of Darwin's classic work on comparative anatomy. By comparing the physiological and psychological aspects of man and ape, he fills in what had been merely suggested in the Origin: that man's ancestor, if still alive today, would be classified among the primates and on a lower scale than the apes. The last chapter is an added essay on sexual selection, the superior chances of mating that some individuals of one sex have over their rivals. The essay ends with the famous and often misquoted statement, "Man still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin." "The word 'evolution' occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin's works, on page 2 of the first volume of the first edition" (Freeman, p.129).

Moloch (Colomb, Alphonse-Hector)
Unpag. album containing a total of 42 lithographed political cartoons and caricatures, from a numbered suite of 29 unique and individual images, most images presented in duplicate with some examples featuring hand-coloring and some in the original black-and-white, depicting French military and political figures from the time of the end of the Franco-Prussian War, the siege of Paris, the Paris Commune, and the Armistice of Versailles, including Ernest Picard, Gustave Flourens, the Marquis de Galliffet, and Louis Veuillot, together with allegorical figures and other stylized characterizations, each captioned below the image and with Moloch's signature within the plate. Some scattered toning and very minor foxing. Folio. Half-calf with marbled boards. Some abrasions especially along spine. Paris (Chez Deforêt et César/Talons) 1871. Hector Moloch was a French cartoonist and caricaturist who published his works in journals and newspapers such as Chanteclair, La Fronde, L'Éclipse, Le Greot, Le Pêle-mêle, Le Chambard Socialiste, L'Assiette au Beurre, and others. These caricatures are an important historical document from a time of great political and social upheaval in Paris. Very scarce; as of January 2018, WorldCat locates one copy of a similar title in a North American institution, but with what appears to be one copy of each of the caricatures.

Kampen, Laurens van Hulst, 1871.. Octavo. Pp. 70. Plus 4 handsome folding maps bound at end. Text figure. Original printed wrappers, spine reinforced with paper, old shelf ticket to spine, old military institutional stamps to cover and title-page; wrappers soiled and shabby, close tear to one leaf, lower wrapper and some maps chipped at corner with slight loss to one map. In fair condition, most uncommon in the original state. ~ First Dutch edition, translated from the French. Very rare. Though well written and comprehensive, the book was not receive with much acclaim. Paris, En vente aux Bureau du Père Duchêne et chez tous les libraires, 16 ventôse, an 79-3 prairial an 79 (6 mars - 22 mai 1871). 68 numbers of 8 pages each bound in 1 volume. Large 8vo. Later hard-grained half red morocco, spine with raised bands and gilt lettering, marbled boards, top edge gilt. Del Bo, Comune di Parigi, p. 41; Maillard, pp. 156 ff.; Le Quillec, 1946. All published. Edited by E. Vermersch, A. Humbert and M. Vuillaume. Complete collection of this immensely popular journal, which had a very substantial distribution. - This copy is extra-illustrated: it contains 50 lithographed caricature portraits by Mailly and Ch. Vernier and P. Klenck. The caricatures by Mailly and Vernier are all coloured. Each caricature has as heading "La Commune" and they are numbered 1-50. The Mailly & Vernier caricatures are the numbers 9-16; 22-24; 29-48. The others are by P. Klenck. The Mailly & Vernier caricatures are listed in Berleux, La Caricature Politique en France pendant la Guerre, le Siège de Paris et la Commune (1870-1871), p 132 and the caricatures numbers here are the identical numbers for the Berleux listing; the others by Klenck are listed in the same reference work, pp. 102-105. The Klenck caricatures however have been taken from a larger work and the numbers here do not correspond to that much larger work. It is visible that the numbers of the Klenck caricatures have been manipulated to fit into the sequence 1-50. The size of these caricatures is larger than the Pere-Duchene and hence the volume is much larger than the usual Pere-Duchene found.

The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex" (1871). "In the Origin Darwin had avoided discussing the place occupied by Homo sapiens in the scheme of natural selection, stating only that "light will be thrown on the origin of man and his history." Fawcett, Milicent Garrett
[n.p.]: Printed for the Bristol & West of England Society of Women's Suffrage by the Tavistock Printing Company, 1871. First edition. Disbound and stitched at the spine; front wrapper partially detached with small paper loss to upper left corner not affecting text. Internally clean and complete, with all 23 pages unmarked and bright. A Near Fine copy of this exceptionally rare pamphlet, which does not appear in modern auction records or at any institutions according to OCLC. A suffragist rather than a more militant suffragette, Dame Millicent Fawcett employed dispassionate, rational arguments to make a case for women's rights. The lecture recorded in this pamphlet is a prime example of her methods, as the Electoral Disabilities of Women sets out and deconstructs seven common arguments against women's enfranchisement. Drawing on the philosophy of John Stuart Mill and Erasmus Darwin, Fawcett calls for logical consistency in Britain's application of disability laws, asserting that if concerns about women's intellect, emotion, or education levels are what bar them from civic participation, those same concerns must shape when and how men gain the right to vote.
