Salt Lake City: George Q. Cannon, 1871. 432pp. Trigesimo-secundo (32mo) [13 cm] Blind stamped black sheep with title and bands with light gilt stamping. Contemporary name on front pastedown, otherwise fine. Item #2008 A beautiful copy of the first hymnal printed in Salt Lake City by the LDS Church, more than thirty years after first arriving in the Great Basin. Rare in this condition. "This edition is the first published in Utah Territory, and possesses one distinctive peculiarity - it is not only printed and bound at the Church Printing Office, but the type in which it appears has been manufactured here. This issue differs from the two which precede it in one respect only, there have been fourteen hymns added to the collection; they, however are placed in the last part of the book, so as not to interfere with the use of the other editions in common with this. That this little work may accomplish the object for which it is designed, and prove a source of joy and consolation to the Saints, is the earnest prayer of Your brother, George Q. Cannon." - from the Preface. Flake/Draper 1772. Chism 74. Sabin 74797.

Vor der Revolution von 1848 unternahm Mislin eine Pilgerreise von Wien über Budapest und Konstantinopel nach Jersusalem. She became well known as a speaker and lecturer—on political and academic subjects as well as women's issues—in the 1870s, when women rarely ventured onto public platforms" (ODNB). [Black Interest; Racism; West Point] Smith, Gerrit
Peterboro, New Hampshire, 1871. Very good condition. Scarce broadside condemning the racism and "pro slavery caste spirit" at West Point just following the Civil War, and advocating its closing. The author condemns what he terms "mob behavior" and an incident in which West Point cadets kidnapped and threatened to tar and feather several African Americans. He also decries the racism which drove the first black appointed to a cadetship, James Webster Smith (1850-1876), out of the Academy in 1874. Smith was a highly talented former slave, born in South Carolina in 1850, and nominated to attend West Point while a student at Howard University. He was harassed, resented and isolated by classmates, all of which culminated in confrontations and three court martials. In 1874 Smith was deemed insufficient in studies by a professor who recommended a formal discharge. The author of the broadside is Gerrit Smith (1797-1874) an important abolitionist, politician and philanthropist. Smith was a member of the Secret Six who financially supported John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. He assisted hundreds of African Americans by purchasing their freedom, arranging passage to Canada for some, while helping others locally. 8 1/2 X 14". Period folds flattened, otherwise very good condition. OCLC: 25107300 cites 11 libraries. Rare in the trade.

General toning, with occasional foxing, to contents; probable trimming to margins; color plates still bright and clean; Very Good. A popular and sensational account, for Spanish readers, of the Paris Commune and its aftermath. The first title provides a general narrative of events, heavily illustrated with portraits of the principal figures among both the communards and their opposition, as well as documentary images of Paris in the throes of insurrection. Of special interest is the vividly colored half-title, a striking portrayal of women revolutionaries, the so-called "petroleuses" in action, marching forth with guns and swords while Paris burns in the background. The second title, issued in 30 serial parts of 8 to 12 pages each (all present here), provides a daily account of the state trials of the Commune's leaders that followed the insurrection, beginning in August, 1871 (military tribunals through the summer had alread … [Click Below for Full Description]

Adam, Stevenson & Company, Toronto. 72pp; side-sewn signatures glued into printed paper covers; 182 x 125 x 4 mm. First Canadian edition; originally published in Blackwood's Magazine (May 1871) & reissued shortly after by William Blackwood as The Battle of Dorking: Reminiscences of a Volunteer; & in the US by Porter & Coates (1871) under the present title, which (uniform with the Canadian) reads in full: 'The German Conquest of England in 1875, and Battle of Dorking; or, Reminiscences of a Volunteer, Describing the Arrival of the German Armada - Destruction of the British Fleet - The Decisive Battle of Dorking - Capture of London - Down Fall of the English Empire. By an Eyewitness, in 1925.' Distinguished as a pioneering work of speculative fiction, it was initially intended as a warning to the English considering the outcome of the Franco-Prussian War. Both the British & American editions are readily procurable, though decidedly scarce (especially in wraps); while the Canadian edition is extremely rare (WorldCat locating one, possibly two copies). The covers of the present copy are intact save for corners (on the front) but half the very fragile spine has been worn away from the foot (without type loss). Soiling to upper cover along gutter & bottom edges, with light offset to foot of tp. About a very good copy of an exceptionally rare imprint. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Lewis Carroll
I can't go back to yesterday because I was a different person then. Here we offer a set of the first American editions of perhaps the most beloved children's books ever: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, by Lewis Carroll, printed in 1871 and 1872, respectively, and each densely illustrated with John Tenniel's now iconic illustrations. Carroll initially published in the US through both Appleton in New York and Lee and Shepard in Boston, but only the Lee and Shepard editions were printed in the US. "Alice" features first edition points of no ads following text and an upside-down "9" rather than a 6 in the page number to page 161. "Looking Glass" features first edition points of "wade" instead of "wabe" in the poem "Jabberwocky" on p.21 and a misplaced half title and frontis, which should precede the title page rather than the first page of chapter one. As a very special bonus, included in the auction is a very collectible 18th century pharmacy bottle with a "drink me" tag reproduced from the original John Tenniel "Alice" illustration. The bottle is a rare, sought-after "Rowland's Macassar Oil" bottle, as the printing in the glass contour reveals. Rowland's Macassar is mentioned in the White Knight's tale in "Looking Glass": His accents mild took up the tale: He said, "I go my ways, And when I find a mountain-rill, I set it in a blaze; And thence they make a stuff they call Rowland's Macassar Oil - Yet twopence-halfpenny is all They give me for my toil." "Alice" has expected wear and stains to the boards (please see pics). Front and rear gutters h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Double Play: How Joe Hardy Chose His Friends William Everett 1871 - Lee & Shepard Publishers New York 7" x 4.75" For sale is this classic piece of fiction geared towards boys. The notable factor about this book is that it is one of the earliest novels published geared towards the subject of Baseball. It is the fourth novel ever published to incorporate Baseball. Really neat spine featuring an illustration of a bat with a baseball wrapped with a belt. The book includes 4 Illustrations and 244 Pages. Bound in its original green cloth with gold decorations. Has minor rubbing to the spine ends and hinges. There is rubbing to the corners with the boards poking through. Clean interior with minimal foxing. There is an inscription from 1901 as shown. There is a minor split between the frontispiece and title page in the binding. Very minor, but needs to be mentioned. Brown end papers intact with a small split in the rear hinge as shown. Allen, William Francis; Charles Pickard Ware; Lucy McKim Garrison (Eds.).
John Ross & Co. (Nation Press), New York, 1871. First Edition, Second Issue. 8vo. Pp. xxxviii, [xxxix] - xliv, 115, half-title. 136 scores with lyrics. Original purple cloth with gilt title to cover, brown coated endpapers. Covers unevenly faded, hinge cracked at title-page though tight. A reissue using the sheets of the 1867 first edition published by A. Simpson & Co., with the imprint on a cancel slip mounted over the original imprint. Association copy. Signature of Theo. F. Seward (1835-1902) to title-page. Seward, music educator, composer, editor of many music periodicals in New York, took charge of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, wrote down more than one hundred of their plantation melodies, and, while making the tour of Europe with them in 1875-76 became impressed with the advantages of the tonic sol-fa system, the new system of musical instruction. In 1877 he established the system in the United States. This historic collection was the first collection of slave songs to appear in print, and was compiled by white northerners who lived among the ex-slaves in the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia as teachers and missionaries. The 38-page preface offers valuable insight into performance practice, voice quality, song types, the shout, and other aspects of slave songs. The detailed Table of Contents indicates the geographical sources of the songs and the names of the contributors, and notes are attached to many of the songs.
