[MANUSCRIPT BILL OF SALE FOR THE COFFEE PLANTATION LA CRIOLLA AND ITS SLAVES]

[Cuba. 1871].. 6pp. Folio. Later stitching. Heavy offsetting. Good. An interesting manuscript recording the bill of sale of the coffee plantation "La Criolla" and its slaves. The slaves are listed individually by name and include many children, some as young as three years old. The document is detailed, outlining the timeline for payment and including a clause for sale of the slaves if certain deadlines are not met. This bill of sale was recorded at an interesting time in Cuba's slavery history. Though Cuba ended its participation in the slave trade in 1867, it was not until 1886 that slavery was finally abolished by royal decree.

The descent of man. First issue.

London: John Murray, 1871. Darwin, Charles (1809-1882). The descent of man, and selection in relation to sex. 2 vols., 8vo. viii, 423, [1], 16pp publisher?s adverts.; viii [2], 475, [1]pp., 16 pp. publisher?s adverts. Text wood-engravings. London: John Murray, 1871. 187 x 126 mm. (largely unopened). Original green cloth, gilt-lettered spines, inner hinges just cracking, slight wear to corners, corner of Vol. I back cover bumped. Fine, unrestored copy. First Edition, First Issue, distinguished by the presence of the ?Postscript? leaf in Vol. II tipped in after p. viii, and ?transmitted? appearing as the first word on p. 297 of Vol. I. Twelve years after the publication of the Origin, Darwin made good his promise to ?throw light on the origin of man and his history? by publishing the present work, in which he compared man?s physical and psychological traits to similar ones in apes and other animals, and showed how even man?s mind and moral sense could have evolved through processes of natural selection. In discussing man?s ancestry, Darwin did not claim that man was directly descended from apes as we know them today, but stated simply that the extinct ancestors of Homo sapiens would have to be classed among the primates. This statement was (and is) widely misinterpreted by the popular press, however, and caused a furor second only to that raised by the Origin. Darwin also added an essay on sexual selection, i.e. the preferential chances of mating that some individuals of one sex have over their rivals because of special characteristics, leading to the accentuation and transmission of those characteristics. He famously speculated that humanity?s ancestors would be found in Africa: "In each great region of the world the living mammals are closely related to the extinct species of the same region. It is therefore probable that Africa was formerly inhabited by extinct apes closely allied to the gorilla and chimpanzee; and as these two species are now man?s nearest allies, it is somewhat more probable that our early progenitors lived on the African continent than elsewhere "(Vol. 1, p. 199).         CHECKMATE

1871. With Illustrations. Philadelphia: Evans, Stoddart & Co., 1871. 2 pp undated ads. Original black cloth. First American Edition of this fascinating tale of detective fiction -- the first book to include the use of plastic surgery, and the use of dental records as a means of criminal identification.~With CHECKMATE... we come to a detective novel proper, containing several features new to the art. One innovation is that the criminal's facial appearance has been altered by plastic surgery, making the detective's task much more difficult... It was not until 1901 that a Finger-print Bureau was established by Scotland Yard. So when CHECKMATE appeared, it was a criminal's features that betrayed him, and if these were convincingly altered his chance of escape was high... By using plastic casts and dental records (the first time these devices had been employed in a detective story), David Arden [detective and avenger of his brother's murder] finally unmasks the murderer. For this cunning new plot alone, Le Fanu is ensured remembrance as a contributor to the field of detective fiction [Quayle pp 40-41].~The three-volume UK edition likewise came out in 1871 -- but did not include the illustrations present in this two-column American edition. This copy is in black cloth, with the title diagonally in gilt on the spine; copies were also issued in wrappers. Condition is bright and near-fine (very slight wear at the front joint, one small hole in the front free endpaper). See Sadleir 1371 for the UK edition; Hubin Crime Fiction p. 244. Housed in a custom (snakeskin?) clamshell case.

Anglo-American Atlantic yacht race of 1870. Start of the Yachts Dauntless and Cambria from Queenstown for New York on the 4th. July

London: Published by Wm. Foster, 1871. Tinted lithograph, finished by hand, drawn on stone by Dutton after "a painting by R.L. Stopford", sheet size: 20 x 27 3/8 inches. Fine condition. A dramatic scene illustrating the start of the Trans-Atlantic race of 1870, by the celebrated maritime painter Thomas Dutton. Thomas Dutton was one of the greatest nineteenth century maritime painters. His emotive works display a genuine love of the sea and his careful depiction of detail provides a wonderful record of the important vessels of the age. The 108-foot Cambria , owned by James Ashbury of the Royal Harwich Yacht Club , raced the Dauntless , owned by James Gordon Bennett of the New York Yacht Club, from Queenstown, Ireland, to New York on 4 July 1870. The Cambria arrived first, making the crossing in 23 days, 5 hours 17 minutes and 15 seconds, just under two hours ahead of the Dauntless . After recuperating for 11 days the Cambria took part in the first true Americas Cup race. She competed against a field of 23 American yachts, and lost to the Magic by 40 minutes, finishing in 10th place overall. Dutton expertly captures the exciting moment of the start of the Trans-Atlantic race, and shows the great beauty and style of this remarkable ship.

Réflexions sur l'état religieux, politique et social des israélites russes : essai sur une reforme modérée et progressive, dans le domaine du judaisme en Russie

      L. Nitzsche, Odessa 1871 - Small quarto. [4], 191, [1]pp. Modern half burgundy cloth over decorative paper covered boards, with handwritten lettering on spine. Powerful essay on the religious, political and social conditions of the Jews in Czarist Russia.Contemporary inscriptions and stamps on title and the following two leaves (not affecting lettering). Age-toning and foxing to the very first and very last leaves. Sporadic molding and worming (slightly affecting text) throughout the last 50 pages. Text in French. Binding in overall good+, interior in fair to good condition. About the author: Joachim Tarnopol (1810-1900) was a maskil in Odessa, author, communal worker, and wealthy merchant. At the beginning of the reign of Alexander II, he began his endeavors for the emancipation of the Jews and their reconciliation with the Russian people. In 1855 he published his pamphlet "Notices historiques et caracteristiques sur les Israélites d'Odessa." In 1856, together with his friend Y. Rabinowitz, he approached the Russian authorities and requested permission to publish a Jewish periodical in Russian which would propagate the ideologies of the Haskalah and reconciliation with the Russian people. In May 1860, Tarnopol, together with Rabinowitz, edited the first Russian-Jewish newspaper, "Razsvet" (The Dawn). A dispute, however, immediately broke out between them as to whether a Jewish newspaper in the country's language should publicly condemn the internal deficiencies of the Jewish people and thus arm the hands of its enemies outside the community and estrange the youth that had received a foreign education. Tarnopol, who was against criticizing Jewish internal affairs before outsiders, resigned from the editorship of the newspaper (from the 20th issue). He published his reasons for this step in a letter to the editorial board of "Ha-Maggid" (nos. 45-46, 1860). In 1868 his book on "An attempt at cautious reform within Judaism, meditations on the internal and external way of life of Russian Jews" was published in Odessa in Russian. It was a summary of his outlook on the road to be followed by Russian Jewry. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SHIRLEY HALL ASYLUM ... New Edition.

London: Strahan & Co., Publishers,. 1871. original decorated terra cotta cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold, gray coated endpapers, top edge untrimmed, fore-edge rough trimmed.. Cloth lightly rubbed at edges, a tight, bright, very good copy. The. 1863 edition is rare; this 1871 edition is pretty scarce. (#149388). Second edition. A collection of linked stories first published anonymously in 1863. "William Gilbert (1804-1890) UK writer, father of W. S. Gilbert; also one of the pioneers of psychiatric medicine. He drew upon his work in that field in two notable collections of hypothetical case-studies, SHIRLEY HALL ASYLUM: OR THE MEMOIRS OF A MONOMANIAC (1863) and DOCTOR AUSTIN'S GUESTS (1866). Although not fantasy as such, the tales offer interesting early descriptions of the various kinds of delusions to which people may fall victim: the first volume includes an imaginary haunting and an account of religious mania; the second features a man who believes he is getting younger and a man who believes himself possessed." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy, p. 409.         OUR LAND AND LAND POLICY, NATIONAL AND STATE [wrapper title]

San Francisco, 1871. Original printed wrappers. Text block stitched together and loosely laid into wrappers, and apparently never bound in. Wrappers a bit soiled and worn. Map with a long closed tear, with no loss. One text leaf torn in outer margin, not affecting text. Overall, about very good. In a cloth chemise. Henry George's rare first book, putting forth in early form some of the ideas for which the economist and reformer became famous. George holds that the private ownership of land is injurious to society as a whole, and argues that public lands should not be given in large grants to railroads, speculators, or corporations, but to actual settlers and workers themselves, who need the land and natural resources to create wealth. "With tremendous power and farsightedness, he attacks the railroads and land grants, boldly giving names and specific cases of wrongdoing. The especially prepared map shows the immense extent of the 'Railroad Reservations' in California" - Howell. George also calls for taxes on land values and the abolition of other taxes that he sees as injurious to workers and investors as well. Much of the text relates specifically to land issues in California, often involving mining and railroads. An important and rare work of American economic thought.

An important collection of twenty five original etchings, including works from two separate series and three proofs-before-letters of Lalanne's 'Passage de la Seine par le Genl. Read pendant la guerre de 1870'

Paris: Cadart & Luce, 1871. Folio. (18 x 12 3/4 inches and smaller). 25 etched plates (comprising 12 plates on india paper mounted from the '12 Croquis à l'eau-forte' series; 10 [of 12] plates on from the 'Souvenirs Artistiques du Siège de Paris 1870-1871' series; and three proof-before-letters examples of the 'Passage de la Seine' plate [one on india paper mounted]). The collection unbound as issued within recent dark green morocco-backed cloth box, the '12 Croquis' series with original light blue paper wrappers, the upper cover with etched title block and artist's manuscript presentation inscription, contained within original green cloth-backed paper-covered boards, titled in gilt on upper cover, cloth ties Provenance: John Meredith Read (1837-1896, presentation inscription from the artist 'Au Général J. Meredith Read / Hommage de son dien dévoué / Maxime Lalanne') The John Meredith Read collection of Lalanne etchings: an important archive recalling the former's role in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871 and his time as U.S. Consul-General to France. Maxime Lalanne was a highly accomplished etcher and draughtsman whose talents were readily acknowledged by his peers. P.G. Hamerton wrote that 'No one etched so gracefully as Maxine Lalanne. This merit of gracefulness is what chiefly distinguishes him … there has never been an etcher equal to him in a certain delicate elegance, from the earliest times till now' ( Etchings and Etchers , 1880, p.154). Joseph Pennell echoed this view, 'Lalanne is one of the most exquisite and refined illustrators of architecture who ever lived. His ability to express a great building, a vast town, or a delicate little landscape, has never been equaled' ( Pen Drawing and Pen Draughtsmen , 1920, p.92.) Lalanne initially made a career in the law, but in about 1850 was persuaded by his friends to turn to the study of art full-time. He moved from Bordeaux to Paris, joined the studio of Jean Gigoux, and made his Salon début in 1852. Lalanne was one of those who were instrumental in the revival of etching in France, and was a founding member of the Société des Aqua-Fortistes. His illustrated manual Traité de la gravure à l'eau-forte , published in 1866, was pivotal in elevating etching to the status of a fine art, and he became one of the medium's most influential instructors. He published seven prints in the Society's Eaux-fortes modernes series between 1862 and 1866, and provided drawings for their journal, L'Illustration nouvelle . The present collection includes two series that have highly contrasting subject matter: the first bucolic land- and seascapes, the second a series forming an eyewitness record of the Franco-Prussian War. Perhaps the most interesting print is a supplementary image from the Franco-Prussian War, the subject being the original owner of this collection (General Read) being rowed across the Seine (like Washington across the Delaware) whilst the bombardment continues all around. 'John Meredith Read, Jr. was born in Philadelphia on February 21, 1837. The Read family was prominent in American political life; Read's great-grandfather George Read signed the Declaration of Independence and was a framer of the Constitution; his father, John Meredith Read, Sr., was a prominent Pennsylvania jurist who was outspoken on the "Free Kansas" issue and was later appointed Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Read was educated at a military school, followed by college education at Brown University and Albany (New York) Law School, from which he graduated in 1859. That year he was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar and married Delphine Marie Pumpelly. Read was an active supporter of Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party in the elections of 1860. As a reward, he was promoted to brigadier-general (the youngest man ever to hold this rank) and made adjutant-general of New York State, directing military affairs there during the Civil War with great success, eventually receiving official recognition from the War Department. His support of the Republican party continued through the Civil War, and he was active in General Ulysses S. Grant's campaign for President in 1868. His reward for service this time was to be appointed consul-general to France and Algeria in 1869. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), Read acted as the representative for the German government, protecting German interests and citizens until the Germans re-established diplomatic relations in 1872; for this, the Kaiser eventually tried to confer a knighthood on Read, but Congress never passed the resolution that would have allowed this. Read also looked after American and French interests during the Paris Commune uprising and the second siege of Paris. The French held him in such high esteem that in 1872 the Minister of War appointed him president of a commission to determine whether French troops should be taught English. Recognizing Read's talents in the diplomatic service, Grant appointed him the first resident minister to Greece in 1873. Once again, his term of office was marked with diplomatic successes. One of his first accomplishments was to gain the release of the American ship Armenia from Greek authorities. In 1876, he compelled the Greek government to revoke an order banning sales of English translations of the Bible. In 1877, he notified the U.S. press that the Russo-Turkish War was disrupting Russia's wheat exports to Europe and that U.S. exports to Europe at that time might capture the market. The resulting grain exports to Europe netted U.S. businessmen $73 million. As minister, he was also responsible for protecting American interests and citizens during the Balkan crisis and War of 1875-1878.' (University of Rochester Libraries). - Gefaltet. - Versand D: 12,00 EUR Wüllerstorf-Urbair, Schrötter, Novara, Brief, Letter, Lettre, Briefe, Autograph, Autographe, Autographen, Autograf, Autografe, Autografen, Signatur, Signiert, Signed, Signature, Unterschrift, Eigenhändig, Handschrift, Handschriften, Manuscript, Manuscrit, ALS, A.L.S., LAS, L.A.S.

PROMISSORY NOTE MADE PAYABLE TO MANNEN CLEMENTS, GONZALES, TEXAS, DATED MARCH 21, 1871, AND SIGNED BY COLUMBUS C. CARROLL

Privately printed, 1871., 1871. 3 ½" x 8 1/4." Printed form by Kiggins & Kellogg, William Street, N.Y with vignette of 2 sailors standing along side barrels and an anchor and standing under a star-spangled arch. A promissory note made payable to and signed by M. Clements for 386 gold dollars. "On the first October 1871 I promise to pay to the Order of M. Clements Three Hundred Eighty Six Gold Dollars, at 10% Interest from maturity until paid. Value received. No. 65. Due October 1st, 1871. Signed C.C. Carroll." Signed by Clements on verso and making it payable to Geo. C. Tennille. Also, 18 cattle brands have been hand-drawn with number of cattle and price for each (apparently by Clements' hand), all totaling up to $386. C.C. Carroll is Columbus C. Carroll, a trail-driving contractor from Gonzales, Texas who in 1871, in conjunction with Jake Johnson and Crawford "Doc" Burnett, gathered several thousand head of cattle and drove them in successive herds of 1000 - 2000 head each to Abilene, Kansas. "Doc" Burnett had a contract with P.D. Armour & Co. of Chicago to deliver to Abilene 10,000 big steers, 4 years and older at a price of $12 in gold per steer. Carroll and Johnson took the first herd of the season, leaving Gonzales in March, 1871. Carroll hired 18 year old John Wesley Hardin, who had already killed 13 men, to manage the next herd which followed a week or so after the first herd. Hardin's cousin, Jim Clements, accompanied Hardin with this second herd. Mannen Clements managed the third herd for "Doc" Burnett, and was accompanied by his brothers Joe and Gip Clements. Columbus Carroll arrived in Abilene in May. Abilene was the wildest of Kansas cattle towns at that time, with newly-hired City Marshal Wild Bill Hickok assisted by Tom Carson, nephew of Kit Carson, and famous Texas gunfighters Ben Thompson and Phil Coe, owners and operating the famous Bull's Head Saloon. Carroll sent word to Hardin to join him in town. Hardin arrived in Abilene on June 1 after a trail-drive on which Hardin had killed 2 Indians, and due to an incident in which Hardin felt his herd was being crowded by another herd, he killed 5 Mexican cowboys and Jim Clements killed l. Carroll "squared" things for Hardin with Hickok and other city officers with a bribe so they would overlook Hardin's "indiscretions." The first night Hardin was in town Carroll got into an argument with Tom Carson and Carson pulled a gun on him. In turn, Hardin pulled a gun on Carson and forced Carson to leave. The next day neither Hickok nor Carson said anything to Carroll or Hardin about it. Ben Thompson had been telling Hardin that Hickok didn't like southerners, and that he was out to get Hardin. Thompson suggested that Hardin should kill Hickok, but Hardin told Thompson that he wasn't there to do Thompson's killing for him ... the tension was high! A couple of days later one of the most famous, legendary incidents in the lives of Wild Bill Hickok and John Wesley Hardin took place. As City Marshal, Hickok had banned the carrying of a revolver in Abilene and had posted notices around town. Hardin was continuing to wear 2 pistols and was told by Hickok it was against the law. Hardin followed Hickok outside where Hickok turned suddenly and asked Hardin, "What are you doing with pistols on?" Hardin responded that he was "taking in the town," at which point Hickok pulled his pistol out and said, "Take those pistols off. I arrest you." Hardin calmly removed both pistols and offered both to Hickok, with butts forward. As Hickok reached for them, Hardin quickly performed the "Border Roll" by rolling both pistols over in his hands, and stuck them, fully cocked, into Hickok's face. According to Hardin, he cussed Hickok, but as bystanders began to encourage him to kill Hickok, Hardin stated to the bystanders that he would kill the first man that interfered. Hardin and Hickok then entered the Apple Jack Saloon for a long discussion in a private room, and emerged later as buddies. Carroll remained in town with Hardin, eventually returning to Texas later that summer. M. Clements is Mannen Clements, cousin of John Wesley Hardin, who managed a trail herd following up the herds of Columbus Carrol and Hardin. Mannen Clements had problems on the trail with 2 cowboys who refused to work night guard duty on the herd, brothers Joe and Dolph Shadden. The Shadden brothers refused to work night duty and demanded their pay, which Clements refused. They stayed with the herd but began telling other cowboys that they were going to kill Clements. On July 10, when Mannen Clements returned to camp from herd duty, he was suddenly confronted by the Shaddens, but he was prepared with a pistol under his slicker. Clements shot and killed both brothers, after a narrowly missed shot by Dolph and a hand-to-hand struggle. Shortly after, Mannen and brother Gip went to Abilene to seek out Hardin for help. Hardin asked Columbus Carroll and Jake Johnson to "square" things with Hickok and others, but Carroll got drunk and failed. That night when Hardin and Mannen were in the American House for supper, Hickok and Deputy J.H. McDonald approached and stated that he had a telegram to arrest Mannen Clements and for Clements to consider himself under arrest. Hardin pulled Hickok off to the side and asked if Columbus Carroll had "squared" things for Clements. Wild Bill stated, "No, Carroll is drunk, why didn't you 'square' things yourself?" Hickok jailed Clements, but later released him at midnight, and Clements immediately rode south for Texas. Mannen was never tried for the killing of Joe and Dolph Shadden. In 1872 Mannen helped Hardin escape from a jail in Gonzales County, Texas, by slipping him a file, then pulling him between the jagged bars by a lariat. Much of the next few years had Mannen, along with his brothers and John Wesley Hardin, deeply involved in the bloody Taylor-Sutton Feud. Related to the Taylors by marriage, the Clements brothers participated in many events in this feud with Mannen eventually signing the second truce agreement in 1874. In 1877 Clements found himself in jail in Austin, along with Hardin, Bill Taylor, John Ringo, and members of the Sam Bass gang. Mannen spent the next several years ranching in San Saba, McCulloch, and Runnels counties. By 1880 Clements had accumulated vast horse and cattle herds on his McCulloch County Ranch and was suspected of rustling. In 1887 Clements ran for sheriff of the newly formed Runnels County, with the heated campaign resulting in Clements being killed in Ballinger, Texas, on March 29, 1887, by City Marshal Joseph Townsend. Geo. C. Tennille is George Culver Tennille. Born in 1825 or 1826, Tennille was much older than Hardin and the Clements. He was a farmer and raised stock in De Witt County, and appears in the 1870 Gonzales County census. Two of Tennille's daughters married Clements brothers, Jim and Joe. Tennille, with Mannen Clements, helped Hardin escape the Gonzales jail in 1872, and was a primary participant in the Sutton-Taylor Feud. Tennille was a signer of the 1873 and 1874 truce agreements, but was ultimately killed on July 8, 1874, by a Gonzales County posse headed by Sheriff Green Dewitt. Research indicates that the brands shown on verso of document are brands for C. Clements, Mrs. S. McCoy (?), T.N. Mathews or Mrs. R. Quinney (?), Mrs. Nancy Burton, Mrs. M.E. Murray (?), R.F. Sellers, "80 John" Wallace or L.C. Wright (?), Clemons & Rayborn (?), E.B. Bacon. Stained and with light chipping to edge. Document is in very good condition. This promissory note, with the cattle brands, number of cattle, and value of the cattle listed on the back being consistent with "Doc" Burnett's contract, is clearly related to the famous above described trail drives to Abilene, Kansas. Events in Abilene by Columbus Carroll and Mannen Clements and the clear association with legendary western gunfighters like John Wesley Hardin, Wild Bill Hickok, Ben Thompson, Phil Coe, as well as the Clements brothers, make this document an important record of the 1871 cattle drives. The involvement of Mannen Clements and George C. Tennille in the famous and tragic Sutton-Taylor Feud, and its association with John Wesley Hardin further enhance the importance of this document. A rare first-hand record signed by Mannen Clements and Columbus Carroll.

With the ownership signature of Henry G. Terry (22 March 1894) on each front flyleaf. Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870), physician, was appointed to the Chair of Midwifery at Edinburgh University in 1839, at the age of 28. 'In 1846, when news of the first trials of sulphuric ether in America reached Scotland, Simpson . at once made the first trial of it in obstetric practice, and, convinced of its utility, enthusiastically advocated its use. But he soon came to the conclusion that a more efficient and portable anæsthetic might be found. Chloroform had been hitherto used solely for internal administration. On 4 November 1847 Simpson and his assistants . made for the first time the experiment of inhaling it. They proved its efficacy as an anæsthetic by simultaneously falling insensible below the table. The public trial of it was successfully held a fortnight later at Edinburgh Infirmary. Its use was strongly denounced as dangerous to health, morals, and religion, and Simpson had to battle stubbornly against prejudice, but he ultimately won the victory, and chloroform as an anæsthetic came into universal use. But the development of anæsthesia was by no means Simpson's sole achievement. His genius was of a versatile order, and prompted him to attack questions as far asunder as acupressure and the use of the pyramids. His chief triumphs, apart from his contribution to anæsthesia, were in gynæcology and obstetrics. It may be said that he laid the greater part of the foundation of gynæcology. His discovery of the means of investigating disease, notably the uterine sound and the sponge tent, gave a power of diagnosis previously wanting, and enabled the practitioner to carry out treatment impossible before. To the science of obstetrics at the same time Simpson gave a new precision, while in the practical branches, notably in the use of the obstetric forceps and of the various methods of ovariotomy, his work was of the highest value. His papers on version in deformed pelves, on methods of version, on puerperal conditions, and many other subjects, are of permanent importance. His monograph on hermaphroditism is still the best exposition of a most difficult subject' (Dictionary of National Biography online).         A History of the Birds of Europe, Including All the Species Inhabiting the Western Palearctic Region

Published by the author. Leather Bound. Used: Like New. London: published by the author, 1871-1881 (Volumes I-VIII) Volume I containing title page, dedication, list of subscribers, preface, introduction, literature, addenda and errata, and index was published in 1881, following publication of Volumes II-VIII. 632 plates of which 629 are hand colored lithographs mostly after and by J.G. KEULEMANS, a few after paintings by Joseph WOLF, E. NEALE, each depicting one or two species. Uniformly bound in full brown leather, five raised bands, with gilt decorations in compartments and on edges, TEG, marbled endpapers. Both text (with the exception of Volumes I) and plates are hand numbered as the work was initially published in 84 parts. The plates are fine. Volume IX published years later not included. A magnificent set of a rare title. 'The Birds of Europe is a very beautiful book, and includes virtually all the species found in the region between the Caspian Sea and the Atlantic. Many varieties of birds to which Dresser accorded full specific status are today considered to be only subspecies, but although the text of the book may be outmoded, the illustrations alone make it, even today, a valuable work in every sense.' -Tate-

The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex

London: John Murray,, 1871. In Two Volumes. With Illustrations. 2 volumes, octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spines gilt, sides with panels blocked in blind, dark blue coated endpapers. Engravings throughout. Spines darkened, ends frayed and a little worn, rear joint of Vol. I split to foot with glue repair, front joint of Vol. II split at foot, hinges cracked but holding, tips bumped and slightly worn, edges rubbed, 5 cm closed tear to half-title of Vol. II. A very good set. First edition, first issue with the errata on the verso of the title leaf of vol. II. Here the word "evolution" appears for the first time in any of Darwin's works, preceding its appearance in the sixth edition of The Origin of Species the following year. Darwin had hoped that one of his supporters might tackle the thorny question of human evolution, but was forced to face the logic of his own theory himself. Darwin deviated from his ostensible subject of mankind to describe sexual selection in the animal kingdom, enabling him to answer those who saw peacock tails as an expression of divine aesthetics. Darwin also set out a definite family tree for humans, tracing their affinity with the Old World monkeys, and laid out his views on the evolutionary origins of morality and religion. "The Descent, understood by Darwin as a sequel to the Origin, was written with a maturity and depth of learning that marked Darwin's status as an élite gentleman of science" (ODNB).
