The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex. 2 volumes.

John Murray, London 1871 - 8vo (189 x 129 mm). viii, 423 [1], 16; viii, [2], 475 [1], 16 pp., including half-titles, publisher's catalogue dated January 1871 at end of each volume, and several woodcut illustrations in text. Untrimmed and partially unopened. Original publishers green cloth (cloth little rubbed, spotted and soiled, corners bumped and frayed, slight wear to extremities), inner hinges cracked but holding. Internally very little age-toned, little foxing to endpapers, half-titles and adverts at end (else virtually unfoxed), short tear in blank fore-margin of vol. I, p.21/22. Provenance: Charles Robertson (inscribed on half-title and first flyleaf of vol. I). Still very good, unsophisticated set. ---- Freeman 245, Norman 599, Sparrow 48; Garrison-M. 170 - First edition, first issue of both volumes (with the errata on verso of title-leaf in vol. II and with the first word of p.297 "transmitted" in vol. I). Twelve years after the publication of the Origin, Darwin made good his promise to "throw light on the origin of man and his history" by publishing the present work, in which he compared man's physical and psychological traits to similar ones in apes and other animals, and showed how even man's mind and moral sense could have evolved through processes of natural selection. In discussing man's ancestry, Darwin did not claim that man was directly descended from apes as we know them today, but stated simply that the extinct ancestors of Homo sapiens would have to be classed among the primates. This statement was (and is) widely misinterpreted by the popular press, however, and caused a furor second only to that raised by the Origin. Darwin also added an essay on sexual selection, i.e. the preferential chances of mating that some individuals of one sex have over their rivals because of special characteristics, leading to the accentuation and transmission of those characteristics (Norman). 2500 copies of the first issue were published on February 24. The second issue was published the following month. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Insider’s account of “blackbirding” - the practice of kidnapping native labor from South Pacific islands. The author cuts to the chase: “Of late English traders find ‘black-birding’ far more lucrative than beche-de-mering.” He includes first person and trial testimony. Not much hard fact has been written about this notorious practice, so Palmer’s book is an important and rare source. Ferguson 13727. The color lithos are done from the author’s own drawings. A very good copy bound in original marooon cloth with black rules and gold spine lettering.

THE HOUSEHOLD EDITION OF THE WORKS [in 101 monthly serial parts in wrappers]

1871. [101 parts in original wrappers] London: Chapman and Hall, July 1871 - January 1880. Together, 101 issues (in 101 consecutive months, except that publication lapsed for two months in February-March 1878, between Nos. 79 and 80). Original blue printed wrappers. The first appearance -- COMPLETE -- of the first collected edition of Dickens's works to be published after his death (beginning just 13 months after his death). Each novel runs through three to six monthly parts (often with one novel ending and another beginning within a single part); at the end of each novel are the preliminary leaves, with which a subscriber could have each novel bound up -- into a total of 22 volumes (including Forster's Life of Dickens at the end).~The name Household Edition "refers to the fact that this was literally an edition 'for the home', and was meant as kind of a 'library edition' for ordinary readers and the less affluent, who would be able, through careful budgeting, to purchase the entire run of twenty-two volumes over a protracted period."~For the Household Edition, Chapman and Hall commissioned new illustrations throughout, by in all eleven artists: "The series... was amply illustrated in a manner that the original Chapman and Hall monthly parts could not have been, with large-scale woodcut illustrations dropped right into the letterpress." [quotes from Allingham et al.]. If our math is correct, there is a total of 877 illustrations, of which 65 are full-page plates (bear in mind that a few of Dickens's novels, such as GREAT EXPECTATIONS and HARD TIMES, had not even been illustrated as first editions.)~All 101 parts are in their original blue printed wrappers, with no wrappers missing. There are occasional ad slips and catalogues inserted, and there is no evidence that any was excised; the Household Edition was not like a serialized Dickens first edition, wherein advertisers clamored to have ads at the beginning and end of almost every part.~Condition is remarkable. Many of the parts are simply fine -- with several dozen parts having leaves still unopened. Some parts have only trifling wear at the spine ends, but only a handful has more than that (a very few with worn spines, one part with a wrapper corner chipped away). There is light foxing on some wrappers or early/late leaves, but nothing extensive. The text illustrations are remarkably bold, and the full-page plates are too (curiously withOUT much of any foxing, though a couple have a ragged fore-edge from extending beyond the leaves). In all -- one could not hope to find a more complete, better-condition set; to our knowledge this is only the second set to appear on the market over the past several decades. See Podeschi (Yale) D66 (the Gimbel Collection at Yale includes only two of the 101 UK parts, though it has a large (but incomplete) group of the American issues).

        Document Signed [Ship's Papers]

1871. Signed. GRANT, Ulysses S. Document Signed [Ship's Papers]. New Bedford, MA: September 26, 1871. Broadside (22 by 17 inches), printed, engrossed and signed on the recto. $4500.ShipÂ’s papers granting permission to Charles S. Holt, commander of the ship ""Hunter,"" to depart from the port of New Bedford “laden with Provisions, and stores for a whaling voyage” to the Pacific Ocean. President Grant and Secretary of State Hamilton Fish have both boldly signed this document. With the fragile affixed paper seal of the United States present.Because ships leaving U.S. ports needed ship identification papers before a voyage, documents such as this one were signed by the President and Secretary of State ahead of time and forwarded to the port. The Collector of the Port would then fill in the required information and the date. This document was signed in Washington, DC prior to the September 26, 1871 departure date, but was issued from New Bedford on that date. Document printed in four columns on the recto of this folio leaf, completed in manuscript, with text in English, French, Spanish and Dutch. It contains oaths that the named ship is owned by United States citizens, and bears the official paper seal of the United States, and is also countersigned by James Allen, Collector of Customs for the port of New Bedford, and notarized by James Taylor. Some minor expert paper repairs and restorations, chiefly to the verso, and not affecting any signatures. Grant's and Fish's signatures clear and bold. An excellent and scarce signed document.

L'Esposizione Marittima Visitata da Dante e Virgilio [The Maritime Exhibition visited by Dante and Virgil]

[Naples]: , 1871. An Outstanding Album of Italian Political Cartoons Thirty-Two Magnificent Hand-Colored Lithographs by Antonio Manganaro No Copies Located in Libraries or Institutions Worldwide MANGANARO, Antonio. L'Esposizione Marittima Visitata da Dante e Virgilio. [The Maritime Exhibition visited by Dante and Virgil] Allegoria di A. Manganaro. [Naples: 1871]. Folio (18 11/16 x 12 3/8 inches; 475 x 314 mm.). Hand colored lithograph pictorial title-page and thirty-one magnificent hand colored lithograph plates including the final "Chiusura" plate showing Dante holding hands with the 'skeletal' Virgil. All plates mounted on stubs. Contemporary quarter green calf over green pebbled cloth boards. Covers decoratively ruled in blind, front cover with "Manganaro / L'Esposizione Marittima" stamped in gilt. Spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled end-papers. Spine ends expertly and invisibly restored. This is an outstanding and fascinating record in thirty-two hand-colored lithographs of the political figures of Italy in the 1860's. The majority of the plates feature the figures of Dante and the 'skeletal' Virgil surrounded by various members of the Italian Bureaucracy. In some way the beautifully hand colored illustrations have the flavor of the great French Political cartoonists such as Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) and Charles Philipon (1800-1861). We have been unable to locate any copies at auction from 1923 to date, other than one imperfect copy (Christie's, Rome, June 1998 - lacking the last plate). According to OCLC and KVK there are no copies in libraries and institutions worldwide. MANGANARO, Antonio (1842-1920) painter and caricaturist. At the age of fourteen he was sent to Naples to study at the Regio Istitutu d'Arte where he was supported by two local patrons, the Baron Ceases and Diego Badarò.Manganaro progressed very quickly through the classes of painting and nudity, winning many awards and receiving the praise of his teachers, including Maldarelli and Postiglione. He was arrested for political conspiracy - the members of his family belonged to the Young Italy which was a political movement for Italian youth (under 40) founded in 1831 by Giuseppe Mazzini. It's goal was to create a united Italian republic through promoting a general insurrection in the Italian reactionary states and in the lands occupied by the Austrian Empire. In 1860 he was part of the secret committee of the revolutionary movement that encouraged the entry of Garibaldi into Naples. In the wake of what happened he participated in numerous feats of valor and was awarded a medal for being injured. Upon leaving the Mobile National Guards, he was hired as an editor and cartoonist at the newspaper l'arca do Noè (Noah's Ark), becoming very popular. He then moved on to another paper, Il Giudizo Universale (The Last Judgement) and then finally to the magazine Stenterello. He was considered the equal of the former political cartoonist, Melchiorre Delphic (1744-1835). In 1885 he was appointed Professor of Drawing at the technical school Giambattista Della Porta in Naples. He left many original albums of caricatures, including The Five Hundred of the Italian Parliament, the Eighty City Councilors of Palazzo San Giacomo, and the Provincial Councilors of Naples and their Contemporaries. The Museo del Sannio di Benevento preserves the entire series of his album, The Five Hundred… There are two series of his color lithographs in the Provincial Gallery of modern art of Foggia.
