L'Esposizione Marittima Visitata da Dante e Virgilio [The Maritime Exhibition visited by Dante and Virgil]

[Naples]: , 1871. An Outstanding Album of Italian Political Cartoons Thirty-Two Magnificent Hand-Colored Lithographs by Antonio Manganaro No Copies Located in Libraries or Institutions Worldwide MANGANARO, Antonio. L'Esposizione Marittima Visitata da Dante e Virgilio. [The Maritime Exhibition visited by Dante and Virgil] Allegoria di A. Manganaro. [Naples: 1871]. Folio (18 11/16 x 12 3/8 inches; 475 x 314 mm.). Hand colored lithograph pictorial title-page and thirty-one magnificent hand colored lithograph plates including the final "Chiusura" plate showing Dante holding hands with the 'skeletal' Virgil. All plates mounted on stubs. Contemporary quarter green calf over green pebbled cloth boards. Covers decoratively ruled in blind, front cover with "Manganaro / L'Esposizione Marittima" stamped in gilt. Spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled end-papers. Spine ends expertly and invisibly restored. This is an outstanding and fascinating record in thirty-two hand-colored lithographs of the political figures of Italy in the 1860's. The majority of the plates feature the figures of Dante and the 'skeletal' Virgil surrounded by various members of the Italian Bureaucracy. In some way the beautifully hand colored illustrations have the flavor of the great French Political cartoonists such as Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) and Charles Philipon (1800-1861). We have been unable to locate any copies at auction from 1923 to date, other than one imperfect copy (Christie's, Rome, June 1998 - lacking the last plate). According to OCLC and KVK there are no copies in libraries and institutions worldwide. MANGANARO, Antonio (1842-1920) painter and caricaturist. At the age of fourteen he was sent to Naples to study at the Regio Istitutu d'Arte where he was supported by two local patrons, the Baron Ceases and Diego Badarò.Manganaro progressed very quickly through the classes of painting and nudity, winning many awards and receiving the praise of his teachers, including Maldarelli and Postiglione. He was arrested for political conspiracy - the members of his family belonged to the Young Italy which was a political movement for Italian youth (under 40) founded in 1831 by Giuseppe Mazzini. It's goal was to create a united Italian republic through promoting a general insurrection in the Italian reactionary states and in the lands occupied by the Austrian Empire. In 1860 he was part of the secret committee of the revolutionary movement that encouraged the entry of Garibaldi into Naples. In the wake of what happened he participated in numerous feats of valor and was awarded a medal for being injured. Upon leaving the Mobile National Guards, he was hired as an editor and cartoonist at the newspaper l'arca do Noè (Noah's Ark), becoming very popular. He then moved on to another paper, Il Giudizo Universale (The Last Judgement) and then finally to the magazine Stenterello. He was considered the equal of the former political cartoonist, Melchiorre Delphic (1744-1835). In 1885 he was appointed Professor of Drawing at the technical school Giambattista Della Porta in Naples. He left many original albums of caricatures, including The Five Hundred of the Italian Parliament, the Eighty City Councilors of Palazzo San Giacomo, and the Provincial Councilors of Naples and their Contemporaries. The Museo del Sannio di Benevento preserves the entire series of his album, The Five Hundred… There are two series of his color lithographs in the Provincial Gallery of modern art of Foggia.

1871. New York: Sheldon & Company, n.d. [1871]. Original purple cloth. First Edition, first issue (without the Ball Black & Co. advertisement on the title verso). This is very early Twain -- his third book, preceded only by THE CELEBRATED JUMPING FROG and THE INNOCENTS ABROAD. Twain's "burlesque autobiography" briefly runs through his purported family tree, with humorous (and satirical) illustrations that associate it in verse with "The House That Jack Built."~This copy is in purple cloth (terra-cotta and purple were also used, without priority; so were wrappers). This is a near-fine copy, with scarcely any wear (the spine is only slightly faded -- less than would be expected for the color purple). Though not a scarce book, we seldom see copies in any better condition. McBride pp 16-17; Blanck 3326. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase. Provenance: small leather "Blairhame" bookplate of Mrs. J. Insley Blair.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by the INDIAN CHAMPION OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS & EDUCATION, SASIPADA BANERJI expressing his pleasure at being appointed to the office of a Corresponding Secretary by the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science.

Bristol, England, November 19th, 1871., 1871.. Very good. - Over 130 words penned on both sides of 7-1/4 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide "Red Lodge House" embossed stationery. Sasipada Banerji thanks the recipient for "forwarding the resolution of the Council expressing their sympathy in my works in India". He goes on to express his honor at being appointed to the office of Corresponding Secretary by the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science, and asks "in what way I can best serve your Committee in the capacity of their Secretary at Calcutta". Signed "Sasipada Banerji". Folded for mailing with a tiny hole to the center. Glue stains along the top edge of the second page attest to the letter having once been tipped into an album. A blank leaf, once attached to the letter was removed in the distant past with the loss of the last 2 letters of Banerji's signature. Very good.
The Indian social worker and champion of women's rights and education Sasipada Banerji (1840-1924) worked towards labor welfare in India. He was involved in the social reform movement in Bengal through the Brahmo Samaj, a social component of Brahmoism, the monotheistic reformist and renaissance movement of Hinduism. An advocate of women's rights, Banerji established several girls' schools and founded the first women's journal in Bengali. A close associate of Mary Carpenter whom he met during her visit to India in 1866, Banerji was a member of the Indian Temperance Movement. At Mary Carpenter's invitation, Sasipada Banerji and his wife Rajkumari visited England in 1871. The "Asiatic" of London declared that Rajkumari was "the first Hindu lady who has ever visited England". In 1870 Banerji founded the worker's organization Sramajivi Samiti and established the first Indian journal of the working class, the newspaper Bharat Sramajivi.
Bramo Samaj was created in Calcutta in 1828 by Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Debendranath Tagore as a reformation of Brahmanism. One of the most influential religious movements in India, it gave rise to the Bengal Renaissance and pioneered religious, social and educational advances in 19th Century Hindu communities.
A RARE AUTOGRAPH.

Lettera autografa firmata indirizzata a ''Chère Madame'', Lina Sand. Datata 4 Juin 1871

1871. 4 pp. in-16 (mm 160x102) vergate a penna in francese.

Paris: Henri Plon, 1871. Duodecimo, quarter red-brown morocco. Early French edition of Chesney's electrifying tale of the German invasion of England. Its depiction of the humiliation of the English in battle, but also the crushing despair of life under German rule, positions this work as one of the most important precursors to the dystopias of the twentieth century.Sir George Tomkyns Chesney (who founded the Royal Indian Civil Engineering College at Staines, later General Sir George Chesney and subsequently MP for Oxford) first published this short story in Blackwood's Magazine for May 1871. It quickly ran to many editions and commentaries on both sides of the Atlantic. Its basic premise is that following the defeat of the French in the Franco-Prussian war, the German armies take what was widely feared to be the inevitable step of invading, and quickly subduing, England.Published the same year as Chesney's original, and with a Preface which sketches out the early reception of the work, this early French edition is indicative of the enormous interest generated by the work, 'un brilliant jeu d'esprit littéraire et une ingénieuse fiction'.. Later General Sir GT and MP for Oxford. A neat copy.

The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, according to the use of the Church of England; Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, Pointed as they are to be sung or said in Churches

8vo., finely bound after a design by William Burges in full tan morocco, ruled in black, with five brass mounted semi-precious stones on each board, with two elaborate brass clasps with enamel coats of arms of Lord and Lady Ripon and each set with a semi-precious stone, all by Jes Barkentin, watered silk endpapers, all edges gilt. Just a little rubbing to binding otherwise a very good copy. A handsome piece of high Victorian design by William Burges, one of the pre-eminent figures of Victorian mediaeval revival, for Lord and Lady Ripon. Studley Royal and St Mary's Church were built for the Ripons between 1871 and 1878. Designed by William Burges it has been described variously as "a dream of Early English glory" and "one of the most perfect churches in the kingdom". Pevsner called it Burges's "ecclesiastical masterpiece." As with his project at Skelton-on-Ure for Lady Mary Vyner, Burges oversaw the whole design from the building itself to the fittings and fixtures. J. Mordaunt Crook comments "Skelton is Picturesque; Studley Royal approaches the Sublime." A series of designs for this binding can be found in the William Burges album "Orfèvrerie Domenstique" in the RIBA library. The binding design on this Prayer Book is directly comparable to another binding he designed for a Prayer Book for Sir Alexander James Beresford Beresford Hope. This was sold at Bonhams in 2009 and now resides in the National Museum Cardiff. It too has metalwork by Jes Barkentin with whom Burges worked closely throughout his career. A bracelet in the Higgins Bedford collection, also by Barkentin, has matching settings with those on this Prayer Book. The story behind the commissioning of the chapels at Studley Royal and Skelton comes from a tragic event. A close friend of the Ripons, Frederick Grantham Vyner, had been kidnapped by Greek bandits during an expedition to Marathon. A ransom of a million drachmas was demanded in return for his release and that of his seven companions. After a fortnight's negotiations, armed troops were sent in to rescue the hostages. During a running gun battle Vyner and three of his friends were shot dead. Vyner's mother, Lady Mary Vyner, and her sister Lady Ripon, decided to use the unspent ransom money for the contruction of two churches on their neighbouring estates, Christ the Consoler at Skelton-on-Ure and St Marys at Studley Royal.

Some very minor scattered foxing and toning, some sheets with small corner creases, overall excellent. Sml. folio, sheet size approx. 15 1/4" x 11 1/4". Modern half-calf box portfolio with marbled boards, contents loose as issued. Paris (Chez Grognet) 1871. In addition, to the inside rear cover of each volume is affixed an additional ad ("Joseph Gillott's Steel Pens of the Old Standard Quality"). Exceptionally rare, even more so in the original paper covered boards rather than the sturdier green cloth. A very pleasing set for the Californiana collector. Hard to imagine a nicer set, even with the age-toning and light soiling. Hinges are solid, contents tight on both volumes, with two bent page corners in the South volume corrected. VG or better. Soiling and age toning, only slight paper loss to the sharp cover corners. One corner is split, however, and could be repaired easily. Small tear at base of Yosemite volume can be repaired, rear outer hinge paper coating of Geysers volume is split but stable and can be repaired. ALL covers and inner hinges are solid.

Autograph Letter Signed, to Mr. Mash (?).

Sydney: 26 November, 1871. Single leaf, small octavo, conjugate leaf removed but the letter evidently complete, simple red device to head of recto, pin-holes, very good. A nice note from Anthony Trollope, politely refusing an invitation to whist during his visit to Sydney in 1871. It is rare to see a letter from Trollope's Australian stay on the market, although he was a prolific correspondent.Together with his wife Frances, Trollope sailed for the antipodes in 1871 to visit their son Frederick, who had settled on a sheep station near Grenfell. The novelist evidently enjoyed the time he spent in the colonies, and travelled extensively. He wrote a great deal during his year-long visit, most famously his Australia and New Zealand (1873), but also drew directly on his experiences for two novels, Harry Heathcote of Gangoil (1874) and John Caldigate (1879).The note reads: 'My wife has made an engagement for me on Monday evening (much less to my taste than your offer) which will preclude me from joining your whist table tomorrow. I did not answer your note sooner, knowing that it would make no difference in your engagements, and not being quite sure as to what I might be bound to do. Very faithfully yours Anthony Trollope.'As this implies, whist was a passion of Trollope's, and he deeply felt the lack of available players during his Australian tour. A note printed in his Australia and New Zealand attests to what anguish the refusal must have cost him: 'I did endeavour to institute a whist table, but I found that my friends, who were wonderfully good in regard to the age and points of a sheep, and who could tell to the fraction of a penny what the wool of each was worth by the pound, could never be got to remember the highest card of the suit. I should not have minded that,' continued Trollope, 'had they not so manifestly despised me for regarding such knowledge as important.'Not in The Letters (ed. N. John Hall).
