Stunden der Andacht Ein Gebet und Erbauungsbuch fur Israel Frauen und Jungfrauen

Prague - Wolf Baicheles, 1871. Prague - Wolf Baicheles, 1871 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce copy of thissingular Jewish prayer book in an interesting velvet binding, hand-embroidered with metal thread. Eighth edition. Subtitled: A Book of Prayer and Moral Uplift for Jewish Women and Girls, for use in personal and domestic prayer, as well as for all occasions in womens lives. In German. Although her prayer book for women, Stunden der Andacht (Hours of Devotion), first published in 1855, remained popular and widely-used until the middle of the twentieth century, little is known about its author, Fanny Neuda. Born in Eibenschitz, Moravia on March 6, 1819, Neuda was a member of a rabbinic family. This work, Stunden der Andacht(Prague, 1855) was written as 'a monument of living memories after her husband's death. A best-seller that ran into twenty-eight editions, it soon became the standard womens prayer book of its time. This is all the more remarkable because at the time of its publication in 1855 there already existed numerous examples of this form of literature, which had first appeared on the market at the beginning of the century. But in contrast to the earlier works, which were mainly composed by men, Fanny Neudas Stunden der Andacht was probably the first prayer book for Jewish women in the nineteenth century written by a woman. The sale record indicates the fulfillment of Fanny Neudas hope that her prayer texts, the fruits of a womans heart, would find an echo in the hearts of women. Apart from being composed in a particularly fervent and intimate style of prayer, the texts are characterized by a conservative theology and a middle-class morality typical of the time. Thus Fanny Neuda recommends that in bringing up Jewish girls the moral qualities of the German classics should be applied, as well as the deliberate encouragement of innate female religiosity; they should strive for ennoblement of the heart, enhancement and strengthening of religious feeling. Encouraged by her success, Fanny Neuda pursued her activities as an author, publishing stories that present the world and lives of Jewish women, always with a similar educational message of edification. She died in Merano, in the Italian Alps, on April 16, 1894. (jwa. org)Condition: In a velvet hand-embroidered binding. Externally attractive although a trifle rubbed, wear to head and tail of spine. The hinges have been reinforced. Internally, the majority of the textblock has come away from the binding and thebinding is tender, split in several places. Bright and clean. Each page has been amateurly reinforced at the gutter, occasionally rendering them difficult to open. Several closed tears. Overall: FAIR.

Original Watercolour View of the Glendalough Monastery in Ireland].

1871 - [1871]. Watercolour on paper ca. 25,5x34,5 cm (9 ½ x 13 ½ in). Artist's signature "A.D.", slightly indistinct date and caption "Glendalough" in the lower corners. Traces of old mount on verso, minor foxing on the right margin, right lower corner slightly rubbed with the date faded, otherwise a very good watercolour. Attractive watercolour view of the 6th century monastic settlement in Glendalough, 50 km south of Dublin. The artist depicts Glendalough's famous stone arches, now covered with the overgrown grass and trees, and a ruin of the renowned Round Tower, here shown in its original state - before the reconstruction of 1876, when a conical roof was rebuilt with the original stones. The scene taken on a bright summer day features local peasants having a conversation near the arch. Full of light and air, it gives a wonderful impression of this medieval Irish Christian site. The artist was Irish watercolourist Augusta Drummond, an acquaintance of renowned poet and artist Edward Lear (18121-1888). She was born in Kilberry, Kildare, Ireland to Robert Verschoyle and Catherine Curtis. On 5th July 1878 she married Captain Alfred Manners Drummond, nephew of 6th Duke of Rutland, Captain of the Rifle Brigade, discriminating art collector, acquaintance and client of Edward Lear. The couple had a honeymoon trip to India in 1878, and subsequently travelled to continental Europe and Australia; the travel impressions were realized by Augusta in a series of skillful watercolours. One of them depicting Tasmania and titled "Browns River near Hobart Town" is now in the collection of the National Library of Australia.

The Plays, Histories, and Novels of the Ingenious Mrs Aphra Behn. With Life and Memoirs.

London: John Pearson. 1871 - 6 volumes. 12mo, 183 x 108 mms., pp. vi, 360; [ii], 360; [ii], 344; [ii], 418; xii, 324; 336, with portrait frontispiece, in volumes 1 and 5, 2 other illustrations in volume 5 and one in volume 6, uncut in original two tone paper boards; spines soiled, front joint volumes 1 and 6 tender. These six volumes reprint works of Mrs. Behn first printed in 1725 and 1724 and were edited by R. H. Shepperd. Volume 1 - 4 are facsimiles of the third edition of plays originally published as: Plays / written by the late ingenious Mrs Behn. London : Printed for Mary Poulson, 1724; while volumes 5 and 6 are facsimiles of the eighth edItion of the novels originally published as: Histories and Novels / Written by the late Ingenious Mrs Behn. London : Printed for W. Feales, 1735. Janet Todd, in The Critical Fortunes of Aphra Behn (1998) noted that the reprint provoked a wide range of critical observations: "In the review in The Examiner (20 January 1872) Behn is praised for the 'smart writing' and 'racy plotting' of her plays. In The Bookseller (March 1872) she is judged 'dull and unreadable' by contemporary standards, yet her works can be perused for an understanding of her age." On the other hand, The Saturday Review (January 1872), titling the review "Literary Garbage," stated that "if Mrs. Behn is read at all, it can only be from a love of impurity for its own sake, for rank indecency of the dullest, stupidest, grossest kind, unrelieved by the faintest gleam of with and sensibility."         1871 Treaty of Washington - Confidential document produced for Special Session of US Senate to consider ratification

unspecified, 1871. unspecified, 1871. Leather. Used; Good. Leather; English language; No jacket; 8vo - over 7.75" - 9.75" tall; good condition; this confidential document was prepared for a Special Session of the US Senate, which met to consider ratification of the 1871 Treaty of Washington; first page quotes from Senate journal: 'May 10th 1871, treaty read the first time, referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations, and, together with the message [from President Grant] and accompanying documents, ordered to be printed in confidence for the use of the Senate' - this appears to be a copy of that document; half bound in black leather with marbelled boards and endpapers; scuffing to edges of leather and some bumping to corners; gilt title on spine 'Treaty with Great Britain, 1871'; large fold-out maps are torn in places, usually (but not exclusively) along creases, which suggests the necessary scrutiny they had to undergo, subsequent attempt to repair some tears with tape; the 1871 Treaty of Washington was a landmark treaty for relations between the USA, the UK and Canada and this item is an immensely significant, rare and interesting historical document.
