Fizeau, Hippolite
Paris: Victor Masson, 1870. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING OF FIZEAU'S INDEPENDENT DISCOVERY OF THE DOPPLER EFFECT FOR LIGHT, HERE AFFIRMING ITS ACCURACY & PROPOSING "THAT THE SHIFT IN SPECTRAL LINES THAT HAD BEEN OBSERVED IN STARS IS DUE TO THEIR MOTION RELATIVE TO THE EARTH" (History of Physics: The Wenner Collection). Fizeau read the paper before the Société Philomatique de Paris in 1848, but first printed here in 1870. When Doppler first announced what came to be called the Doppler effect, it was not easy to appreciate or "visualize the experimental difficulties [he] confronted in his time [given that] spectroscopy [was still] in its infancy and photography practically non-existent. There was no chance for any visual confirmation of Doppler's theory" (Hujer, Christian Doppler, JRASC 57, 177). While there was an impressive acoustic text in 1845, the absence of visual evidence continued until Fizeau noticed an "erroneous assumption in [Doppler's] original paper concerning the change of colour of the stars due to the radial motion" (ibid). In realizing this, Fizeau was able "to make a further step in the optical interpretation of [Doppler's] principle. "Lecturing to the little known Société Philomatique de Paris in 1848, Fizeau pointed out that the Doppler effect could be applied to the position of the line in the spectrum and that the motion of the source relative to the observer could be measured by the displacement of a spectral line from its normal position. Following this train of ideas, Fizea [notes that] the study of radial velocities for components of certain … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pasteur, Louis
Gauthier-Villars, Paris, 1870. xii, 322; [6], 327pp. Frontispiece and 37 plates. 237 x 151 mm. Half morocco, marbled boards, spines a bit faded, original wrappers bound in. Bookplate of Herbert M. Evans. First ediiton. Pasteur's five-year investigation of silkworm blight saved the afflicted French silk industry, which over the preceding twenty years had suffered a sixfold reduction. He discovered that pébrine and flacherie, previously thought to be different manifestations of the same silkworm disease, were in reality two separate afflictions, the first parasitic and the second environmental in origin. As both diseases are hereditary as well as contagious, Pasteur recommended discarding all infected eggs and pupae and controlling as far as possible the environmental conditions in silkworm hatcheries. Rossetti, Dante G.
London: F. S. Ellis, 1870. xi,[1],282,[1]pp. Large octavo. Bound in contemporary deep green smooth morocco, a.e.g., gilt inner dentelles. Year of publication ownership inscription and date on binder's endsheet, some wear to upper joint and edges; still, a good copy, internally very good. First edition of Rossetti's first published collection of original verse, large paper issue. One of only twenty-five copies printed on large handmade paper, "for Private Circulation Only." Stetz and Lasner, in ENGLAND IN THE 1880s, note: "This book, by the circumstances of its publication, by its contents, and by its design, secured Rossetti's reputation. When his wife, Elizabeth Sidal Rossetti, died in February 1862, Rossetti placed the original manuscripts of his poems in her coffin. In 1869 these were exhumed secretly from her grave and published in this volume in 1870 with other, more recent work. The book opens with 'The Blessed Damozel,' Rossetti's most famous poem, which had first appeared in the Pre-Raphaelite magazine, THE GERM, in 1850; among the other contents are the sonnet sequence called 'The House of Life' and a group of poems about paintings that show Rossetti's abiding interest in unifying the sister arts. . . . POEMS (1870) was perhaps most remarkable for being one of the first books to be designed throughout by an author. Over a period of nine months, Rossetti supervised the printing of the proofs while painstakingly designing the covers and endsheets. The result had a great influence upon writers and designers of the 1880s. Oscar Wilde's POEMS (1881) and several of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Izmir, Turkey: L'Impartial. Large 8°: [6] letterpress, original green wrappers with printed title, manuscript owner's annotation on the cover (Very Good, very light foxing). A rare pamphlet, printed in French language list the rules of the European Club in Izmir, Turkey, and lists all the members for the year 1870. Izmir at the time only had two clubs, one of them being the Frank Casino or Casino de Smyrne, situated close to the British consulate. Almost contemporary report describes the club: The society of Smyrna, consisting of the European merchants and their families, who mixed together on the most friendly footing, was very agreeable: the public rooms, called the Casino, handsomely fitted up, were open at eight o’clock every evening, and possessed a reading- room; and travellers and strangers from all parts met there to take refreshments, and enjoy the society ; and balls were occasionally held. (The New Monthly Magazine, 1824, p. 352) The example belonged to Gabriel Aubaret. Gabriel Aubaret: A Life of Adventure and High-Level Diplomacy - Louis Gabriel Galdéric Aubaret was one of the most consequential figures in the shaping of the diplomatic and economic affairs of the Balkans and the Ottoman Empire during the second half of the 19th Century, having held various important military and political appointments in the region over a period of forty years. On another track, he is also famous as perhaps the person most responsible for ensuring that Vietnam came under French rule. Aubaret was born in 1825 in Montpellier to a respected family of lawyers. RUFUS BROWN BULLOCK
Governor Rufus Bullock, a native New Yorker, informs the governor of his native state that his adopted state has ratified the 15th Amendment, shortly after New York rescinded its earlier ratification."I have the honor to transmit herewith Joint Resolution ratifying the proposed 'Fourteenth (sic) Constitutional Amendment' passed by the General Assembly of the State of Georgia, February 2d, A.D. 1870."It is ironic that this printed letter incorrectly references the "proposed Fourteenth" amendment. Like all other Confederates states except Tennessee, Georgia had initially rejected the Fourteenth Amendment in 1866, just months after President Johnson sent it to the states for consideration. The recalcitrance of southern states led Congress to impose military governments and to require former Confederate states to ratify the Amendment before they could be represented in Congress. Georgia ratified the Fourteenth Amendment on July 21, 1868, providing the final necessary vote for the amendment to go into effect. This letter clearly refers to the Fifteenth Amendment, under consideration by the states in 1869 and 1870.RUFUS BROWN BULLOCK.Printed Letter Signed, as Governor of Georgia, to the Governor of New York, February 3, 1870, Atlanta, Georgia. 1 p.Historical BackgroundBy 1868, the United States Congress had passed, and the required number of states had ratified amendments to the Constitution to abolish slavery and to provide citizenship and equal protection under the laws to the freed people. BACKGROUND: Joseph Ritson (2 October 1752 – 23 September 1803) was an English antiquary, author. VERLAINE (Paul).
[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Buford, North Dakota.: (). The George S. (Samuel or Sam) and Mary E. Fee 'Family' photograph collection. George S. Fee (1870-1942) and Mary E. Fee (1873-1941) were natives of Richland County, Illinois and were married in 1890 (photo included), first living in Campbell, Missouri before moving to Buford, North Dakota in 1902 where they worked 160 acres raising cattle and running a small mercantile shop. In 1912 the Fee family, now ten daughters and two sons strong, moved to La Grande, Oregon and on to Payette, Idaho in 1915. The Fees and many of their children finally settled in Boise, Idaho (a photo of some of the daughters behind the parents gravestone is also included). The photograph collection along with a small group of letters, about a dozen, give a history of the family slowly moving west while growing in size and changing lifestyles as the parents age and the children and grandchildren grow into adulthood. The two binders contain over a hundred amateur and professional photos relating to the family in Buford and the activities they engaged in. Many of the photos were taken by Flora (later Mrs. C.E. Boggs) and Nola ("Willie") along with their mother. Nola attended the Devil's Lake School for the Deaf and Dumb during the 1910s. The photos show the rugged farming life the Fee family lived around Buford while cattle ranching and gardening. Views of commercial buildings and streets in Buford are included along with the some scenes of social life in this small town. Some of the picture postcards have notes on the backs and were mailed and posted. Other pictures have annota … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chinese Art] [Pillow Book]
A collection of six large graphic erotic depictions painted on paper-backed silk, each measuring approx. 15 x 20 inches. China, ca. 1870s. Loose, the painted panels cut down from their presumed original scroll format and mounted. Crisp and bright colors, with scattered staining, occasional wormholes and a few areas of evident restoration, else fine. Given by her mother on her wedding day, a pillow book was meant to teach a young bride about the art of love making. Typically issued in sets of 6, 8 or 12 panels, the present example is composed of 6 masterfully painted scenarios depicting a new bride and her groom (at times, also accompanied by their servant or servants). Many pillow books were destroyed during the early days of Communist China, this set being an especially unusual survival due to its large format.  [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]

[Click Below for Full Description]

In 1869, Wyoming Territory became the first organized territory to legally codify women's enfranchisement into its general laws. Contained within this larger legal compendium are these landmark decisions. Under Chapter 31: "An Act to Grant to Women of Wyoming Territory the Right of Suffrage, and to Hold Office approved on 10 December 1869: Sec. 1 That every woman of the age of twenty-one years, residing in this territory may, at every election to be holden under the laws thereof, cast her vote. And her rights to the elective franchise and to hold office shall be the same under the election laws of the territory, as those of electors." The U.S. western territories advanced women's suffrage far earlier than the States, and it would be another half century before women gained federal enfranchisement.

RUFUS BROWN BULLOCK
Printed Letter Signed, as Governor of Georgia, to the Governor of New York, February 3, 1870, Atlanta, Georgia. 1 p. This letter clearly refers to the Fifteenth Amendment, under consideration by the states in 1869 and 1870. Historical BackgroundBy 1868, the United States Congress had passed, and the required number of states had ratified amendments to the Constitution to abolish slavery and to provide citizenship and equal protection under the laws to the freed people. The 1868 election of Ulysses S. Grant to the Presidency convinced Republicans in Congress that protecting … [Click Below for Full Description]

FIFTEENTH AMENDMENT
New York, 1870. No binding. Fine. Punchinello. Print. ""The Great National Game"" from the graphic newspaper ""Punchinello."" New York, N.Y., April 23, 1870. 16 pp. 9 x 13 in. This full-page engraving, ""The Great National Game,"" satirizes the recently-passed constitutional amendment granting African-American men the right to vote. The baseball motif, popularized in presidential politics, depicts a black man with stereotyped features holding a bat labeled ""15th amendment"" about to hit a ball stylized with the stars and stripes. The image caption heralds the arrival of African Americans to full political rights ""Our colored brother: 'Hi Yah! Stan back dar; its dis chiles innins now.' "" Historical BackgroundThe black man in this image has ""41st Congress"" labeled on his belt. The 41st Congress was dominated by Republicans, both Radical and moderate, who were committed to passing civil rights measures in the wake of the Civil War. Unsurprisingly, their work was controversial to both southerners and northern abolitionists: A woman holding a bat labeled ""16th amendment"" stands on deck. In actuality, the 16th amendment gave Congress the right to tax income and was ratified in 1913. However, in this instance, it references the heated debate over granting women the right to vote now that African Americans had gained it. The debate created a schism between leading civil rights advocates such as Frederick Douglass and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, as … [Click Below for Full Description]

JAHU DEWITT MILLER
Fort Edward, New York: (1870). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is an absolutely fascinating scrapbook that belonged to Jahu DeWitt Miller. Dated 1876, it was put together when Miller was 19 and working as a lecturer and teacher at the Fort Edward Institute in upstate New York. The book measures 7 inches by 5 and 3/4 inches. The binding on the book is broken and the pages are loose. However, they are intact and contain a veritable goldmine of notes, jotting, etc. There are an estimated 100 pages and of these, and estimated 80% are complete. Miller began his studies at age 14 at the Fort Edward Institute - a collegiate or seminary as they were known in those days. After graduating, he began to teach there. He also acted as Librarian for the Seminary and was on record as a voracious reader. At the same time, he began to preach at various Methodist churches in the area. He was attracted to journalism and wrote extensively. He also began a book collection that grew to a very significant size. He lectured widely across the United States for many years. In 1901, he donated his extensive rare book collection to National Park Seminary located at the time on the edge of Washington DC. Over the years, NPS has changed hands several times until 1942 when it was expropriated by the US Army as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers. Today, it is part of the Walter Reed Medical Center complex. Miller died of a heart attack in Boise, ID in 1911. The scrapbook is chock full of notes, letter, cards and jottings. On many, the ink has faded. Notes are stuck in willy-nilly: "Artman looks a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Composées à partir de croquis, de photographies ou d'estampes réalisés par les Japonais eux-mêmes, ces gravures constitueront un fonds qui sera réutilisé dans de nombreux ouvrages postérieurs consacrés au Japon.
