        5 eigenh. Briefe mit U.

Wien, 1862-1870. - Zusammen 18 SS. 8vo. XII. 1866). Monogramm. - Aus der berühmten Autographensammlung des Adalbert Freiherr von Lanna (1836-1909). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

SUN PICTURES OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN SCENERY, WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL FEATURES, AND SOME ACCOUNT OF THE RESOURCES OF THE GREAT WEST; CONTAINING THIRTY PHOTOGRAPHIC VIEWS ALONG THE LINE OF THE PACIFIC RAIL ROAD, FROM OMAHA TO SACRAMENTO

New York: Julius Bien, 1870. This series of photographs takes the reader on a virtual journey on the Union Pacific Railroad line from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Salt Lake City, and on to California, amazing us with such dramatic geological formations as Hanging Rock, Sentinel Rock, and the Devil's Slide, man-made wonders like the Great Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, and the gold at the end of the rainbow, hydraulic gold-mining operations in California. The text is by geologist Ferdinand V. Hayden (1828?-87), described by ANB as "the most versatile collector of natural history specimens in the United States and the country's foremost exploring geologist" at that time. The photographs are by A. J. Russell (1829-1902), who began his trade as the only military officer employed as a photographer by the War Department during the Civil War. Russell photographed the contruction of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1868, producing a now-rare album of 50 photos, "The Great West Illustrated," in which the pictures in the present work appeared in larger format. According to Sandweiss, "In using Russell's photographs . . . Hayden took the long view of history, emphasizing the value of pictures as documents of geological change while professing indifference to the more recent past. For Hayden, the geologic features of the West were like an open book, affording the educated reader the opportunity to understand millions of years of geologic history.". 315 x 250 mm. (12 1/2 x 10"). viii,150 pp. (with half title). Original green three-quarter morocco over green cloth, raised bands, spine with double-ruled gilt compartments, gilt titling, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In a modern green cloth clamshell box with blue paper spine label. WITH 30 MOUNTED ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPHS. Front pastedown with evidence of bookplate removal. Howes H-337; Sabin 31007; Truthful Lens 81; Flake 3920; Margolis, To Delight the Eye 7; Sandweiss 177. Joints a bit worn, boards lightly chafed, extremities a little rubbed, front hinge cracked (but board firmly attached), occasional mild foxing, more prevalent on photograph mounts (but affecting only the edges of a couple of plates), mounts a little warped, one photograph with slight "bubbling" at head edge, but still an excellent copy, clean and fresh, with bright, sharp photographs, in a sound binding. The Bryant Homestead-Book By the Idle Scholar Illustrated

New York: G. P. Putnam & Son, 1870, 1870. First edition. BAL vol. 1, page 382; Sabin 30844. A fine, bright copy.. 4to, original blind- and gilt-decorated green cloth, designed by Karl Muller, gilt lettering, a.e.g. Albumen photographic frontis portrait of Bryant by Napoleon Sarony; etched caricature of Bryant by Thomas Nast, and 18 wood engravings in the text by William J. Linton after designs by John Augustus Hows. A handsome testimonial to the celebrated poet-editor William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) and his work, as viewed through his life in his hometown of Cummington, Mass., and its connections to the themes in his works. Laid into this copy is a four-page "Supplementary Word from the Author . . ." Julia Hatfield, the "idle scholar" was obviously a close friend of Bryant, but little else is recorded about her, and this is the only book attributed to her that could be found in OCLC. This is one of the most elaborately produced books of its kind about an American poet of any era.

LA PHOTOGRAPHIE, SES ORIGINES, SES PROGRÈS, SES TRANSFORMATIONS; [Contained in]: MÉMOIRES DE LA SOCIÉTE IMPÉRIALE DES SCIENCES DE L' AGRICULTURE ET DES ARTS DE LILLE. ANNÉE 1869. III SERIES - 7TH VOLUME

Paris - Lille: Didron; Chez L. Quarre, 1870. First edition. 8vo., [ii], 561 pp. Contemporary quarter morocco gilt and cloth over boards, t.e.g., others untrimmed. The board tips are rubbed through and there is scattered foxing to the text. A near very good copy. LA PHOTOGRAPHIE, SES ORIGINES, SES PROGRES, SES TRANSFORMATIONS, is regarded as Blanquart-Évrard's enduring work, an accurate history of the first three decades of photography, illustrated with contemporary examples. "Seminal discussion of photomechanical printing and photographic illustration ... the text of this treatise was the earliest to explore the importance that these new processes would eventually have in printing and publishing. Blanquart-Evrard clearly understood that the ink-based image would eventually completely replace the silver based print in publishing."--Hanson Collection catalog, p. 36. This title, which was released in three forms, is contained here in the journal of the society of which Blanquart-Évrard was the president. It begins on p. 161 and concludes on p. 214, and contains 16 specimen plates with tissue guards, of which 5 are folding: Fortier's Château de Blois - salt print (1851); Maxime Du Camp's photograph from Egypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie, a salt print (1852); a photo-lithograph by the Poitevin process; 2 photo-lithographs by Zurcher; La Grande Soeur, a photograph by Goupil; Galerie des Beaux-Arts, a photogravure by the Garnier process; La Justice, a heliogravure by Baldus; a reproduction of a manuscript leaf; Milon de Crotone, a photogravure by Baldus, printed by Lemercier; Vue du Baptistère Louis XIII, a relief photogravure by the Garnier process; carbon print portrait; Croquis, a photograph by Alphonse Braun from a drawing by Raphaël; Rein dans les Mains..., a woodburytype by Goupil; a carbon print portrait by Marion; and a carbon print portrait by Braun. The plates come from Blanquart-Évrard's unused stock and vary from copy to copy. Most copies have 14 plates, and I have seen a reference to a copy with 15 plates; this copy with 16 plates seems to be unique. There are three different editions with this title; one is a quarto edition of 1869 with fourteen plates; another, issued in quarto in 1870 for presentation has as many as 30 plates. Rare, with WorldCat locating only five copies of this editions: Bibliotheque Nationale de France, BM Lyon, George Eastman House, University of Vermont, and the Rijksmuseum. Roosens and Salu No. 928.

Paris: Arthur Bertrand, 1870. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. With 14 plates (4 double-page and in color) and text illustrations. Later half-morocco over marbled boards; other than some light browning, a very clean interior. Signature of Ph. Robert in pencil on title page. and its environs, considered the most complete survey of the area's prehistory available at the time (Zittel). Though much of the volume covers geology and animal fossils, a notable chapter is devoted to human pre-history in Syria and Palestine. Lartet treats the subject with caution, however, being well aware of the Biblical significance inextricably linked to the area and the potential risk of ruffling more than a few feathers with his observations (he also wanted to avoid embroiling his patron, the Duke of Luynes, in any vitriol). In the Epilogue, Lartet addresses the potential conflict between his findings and those interested in a Biblical interpretation, calling it "the most delicate of all subjects" and noting that his research is only concerned with the physical evidence, not theological debate. It is a bit surprising that Lartet did not go further with his argument; he would have been more than qualified to do so, having discovered the first Cro-Magnon skeletons not ten years prior to this publication. Lartet (1840-1899) was a French geologist and paleontologist. His discovery of the first Cro-Magnon skeletons is considered "one of the most important discoveries in human paleontology" (DSB). Louis' father, Edouard Lartet, was also a renowned paleontologist and major contributor to the burgeoning field of human pre-history. Extremely rare; we could not locate any copies currently on the market or sold at auction. OCLC records only 10 copies in America; Dictionary of Scientific Biography, VIII, pp. 44-45; Zittel, History of Geology, p. 219.

With his full-page engravings Gustave Doré does his best work with great dramatic flare. The countless smaller illustrations round out the book and make it a truly outstanding publishing endeavor. Many of the fables were in the main adapted from the classical fabulists Aesop, Babrius and Phaedrus. In these, La Fontaine adhered to the path of his predecessors with some closeness; but in others he allowed himself far more liberty and there is a wider range of sources. T he Indian Bidpai is drawn upon for oriental fables that had come to the French through translations from Persian. So, while the subject of each of the Fables is often common property of many ages and races, what gives La Fontaine's Fables their rare distinction is the freshness in narration, the deftness of touch, the unconstrained suppleness of metrical structure, and the unfailing humor. Keen insight into the foibles of human nature is also found throughout.

        Flores agrestes.

Porto, Viuva Moré, 1870 on front wrapper. - 8°, later quarter cloth over decorated boards, text block edges sprinkled green, original yellow printed wrappers bound in. A few leaves foxed, scattered small stains, some pencilled corrections to text. Overall in very good condition. Author's signed presentation inscription to Antonio Feliciano de Castilho on half title. 283, (1 blank), iii pp. *** The dedication copy of the FIRST EDITION. The dedicatee is Antonio Feliciano de Castilho (see p. 5). Bulhão Pato (1829-1912), a native of Bilbao whose parents were Portuguese, was the author of Poesias (1850), Paquita (1856), and Versos (1862). He was one of the most important Portuguese authors of the Romantic school. He published his first volume of poetry at age 17, astounding the literati by his individuality of style and unaffected simplicity of form. He was a friend and protégé of the historian, poet and historical novelist Alexandre Herculano, and also a friend of Almeida Garrett. Later he was friends with Ramalho Ortigão, Colombano Bordalo Pinheiro, and Eça de Queiroz (whose caricature of Bulhão Pato in Os Maias, in the form of the poet Tomás de Alencar, provoked a violent polemic). His name has been given to a classic of Portuguese cookery, Ameijoas ao Bulhão Pato (clams in a sauce of garlic, olive oil and cilantro).Provenance: Antonio Feliciano de Castilho (1800-1875) ranks (with Almeida Garrett and Herculano) as one of the three best Romantic writers in Portugal, and Bell notes that "His quadras . and his blank verse are alike so easy and natural, his style so harmonious and pure that, despite the lack of observation and originality in these long poems, they have not even to-day lost their place in Portuguese literature." Castilho published numerous works of poetry and prose, founded and edited the Revista universal lisbonense (1841-45), and began the series "Livraria Classica Portuguesa," for which he wrote the studies of Bernardes and Garcia de Resende. He also translated works of Ovid, Molière, and Anacreon. His translation of Goethe's Faust is particularly well-known for the controversy it raised among students of German language and literature ("a questão faustina"). Following Almeida Garrett's death and Herculano's retreat to Val-de-Lôbos, Castilho became the leading figure of the Romantic movement in Portugal. His 1865 prologue to a work by Pinheiro Chagas, which condemned the young writers of Coimbra (Antero de Quental, Teofilo Braga, Vieira de Castro) for "nebulosidade," incited Quental to write Bom senso e bom gôsto. A native of Lisbon, Castilho became blind at the age of six but nevertheless went on to earn a degree in law from Coimbra. Aside from his literary production, he invented a new method for teaching children to read, the methodo portuguez, and attempted to implement it while serving as Commissario Geral de Instrucção Primaria.

      - "Eden" original oil painting on cardboard approx. 41x26cm; down right titeled "Eden" backside handwritten named "Hans Marées" about 1870 [Dimension of the colour matched wooden frame 60x44cm.] Even to the modern observer, Hans von Marées' paintings seem to have a mysterious and enigmatic quality. the coherence of the human body. The depiction of nude human figures casually arranged in landscapes, All the more surprising that according to his own words, his entire life was spent trying to understand this strict reduction of forms and the bucolic illustration of a simple life close to nature became his main motif.

Adolf von Wrede, a Bavarian nobleman, was "the first scientific traveller who succeeded in penetrating into the region of Hadhramaut" (van der Meulen, cited after Trautz, "Adolf von Wrede", in Journal of the Royal Central Asian Society, vol. 20, no. 4, 1933). He travelled to the region, now part of Yemen, in 1843, becoming the first European visitor in 250 years. He reached as far inland as Daw'an, where his baggage was stolen and he was forced to turn back to the coast. Some of his claims, notably his account of an apparently bottomless pit of quicksand, met with ridicule and damaged his credibility. He later emigrated to Texas, where he committed suicide in 1870; he may have also spent some time in the Ottoman army. Scarce: three copies only in UK and Irish libraries (Cambridge, Edinburgh and Oxford).

        Subhat al-Akhbar

Istanbul, n.d , c.a 1870 - 40 pp, Folio. Rare and only early edition of this beautiful historical treasure of the 17th-century Ottoman empire. It is a work in Ottoman Turkish delineating the genealogy of the Ottoman Sultans, from Adam, the first human being and prophet, to Sultan Mehmed IV (r. 1648–1687). As noted by Professor Shahzad Bashir: “genealogy was a major component of political ideology among Islamic dynasties, and this text comes in a long line of similar works produced throughout the medieval period.” It is a particularly interesting historical document for two reasons: 1) it provides significant insight into Ottoman political legitimation and self-representation; and 2) it demonstrates the importance of figural representation in Ottoman art well into the late seventeenth century.
