The Modern Buddhist;: being the Views of a Siamese Minister of State on his own and other religions.

London Trubner & Co. 1870 - Henry Alabaster, 1836-1884, was one of the first British diplomats to the Court of Siam. He arrived in Bangkok as deputy consul in 1857 at the age of twenty-one, in the wake of Bowring's treaty which opened the country to foreign trade. His Thai became sufficiently fluent that he as appointed official interpreter. In 1873 he became personal adviser to King Chulalongkorn and served him loyally until his death at the early age of 48. He assisted in the design of the palace gardens, in founding the Survey Office, and the Post Office. He catalogued the Royal Library and started the first museum in Thailand, inside the Grand Palace. His monument, the finest in the Protestant Cemetery in Bangkok, was erected by the King of Thailand. Chao Phya Thipakon (or Praklang) was Foreign Minister of Siam under King Mongkut. His book, the "Kitchanukit", was the first book printed and published by a Thai. Alabaster here provides a partial translation. A very good copy in the original crimson cloth. Professionally re-cased. Bookplate of Taunton Castle. Title inked on spine. Newspaper cutting pasted in rear.

        Cottage, Lodge, and Villa Architecture

1870. First Edition . AUDSLEY, William and AUDSLEY, George Ashdown. Cottage, Lodge, and Villa Architecture. London, Glasgow, Edinburgh: William Mackenzie, circa 1868-1870. Folio (13 by 18 inches), contemporary three-quarter brown calf expertly rebacked, raised bands, burgundy morocco spine and board labels, marbled boards. $1800.First edition of this popular guide to architecture, complete with 91 lithographic plates on 90 sheets.“By the time the Audsley brothers had established their architectural practice in the early 1860s, the Gothic Revival was a popular choice for churches and dwellings. By the 1870s, large public buildings, hotels, railroad stations, and offices were being designed in the style” (David H. Fox). In this survey of domestic architecture, the Audsleys combine history and practical advice, providing information on when various styles were introduced into Britain and on how they were adapted for use in the middle of the 19th century. The handsome lithographic plates depict an assortment of building structures, complete with elevations and floor plans, as well as details of such specific components as columns, gables, and mantlepieces. “The true Gothic revivalist does not desire to see, by a servile copyism of ancient buildings, the comforts and indispensable requirements of modern civilization done away with or even modified, but rather desires to elevate his art by making it subservient to every end, and by molding it to suit the every day wants of time” (page 3). Lithographic red-and-black title page. Plates bound in numeric order, rather than as listed in the Table of Contents. Numbering omits Plates 62, 69-74, as issued, but adds Plates 4A-10A, 28A-B, 51A, and 54A (4A and 5A together on one sheet). Lithographic impressions crisp. Dampstain to lower right corner of text block, light foxing to text, and a few wormholes. Contemporary binding moderately rubbed. A very good copy.

No Treason, No VI, The Constitution of No Authority.

1870 - Did the Civil War Nullify the U.S. Constitution? Spooner, Lysander [1808-1887]. No Treason. No. VI. The Constitution of No Authority. Boston: Published by the Author, 1870. 59 pp. Octavo (8-3/4" x 5-3/4"). Disbound stab-stitched pamphlet. Light shelfwear and toning, faint vertical crease through center. A few brief contemporary annotations to text, interior otherwise clean. A well-preserved copy of a scarce title. * First edition. One of the most colorful American reformers of the nineteenth century, Spooner is remembered for his abolitionist activities, challenge to the U.S. Post Office with his American Letter Mail Company and his contributions to libertarian and anarchist thought. No Treason. No. 6 is final title in a series of pamphlets critical of the legality of Federal actions during the Civil War. In this lengthy essay, Spooner argues that the Constitution was a contract that had been irreparably violated during the war and was thus void. Furthermore, since the government now existing under the Constitution pursued coercive policies that were contrary to Natural Law and to the consent of the governed, it had been demonstrated that document was unable to adequately stop many abuses against liberty or to prevent tyranny from taking hold. Spooner bolstered his argument by noting that the Federal government, as established by a legal contract, could not legally bind all persons living in the nation since none had ever signed their names or given their consent to it; That consent had always been assumed, thus failing the most basic burdens of proof for a valid contract in the courtroom. Spooner widely circulated the No Treason pamphlets, which also contained a legal defense against the crime of treason itself intended for former Confederate soldiers (hence the name of the pamphlet, arguing that "no treason" had been committed in the war by the south). These excerpts were published in DeBow's Review and other well known southern periodicals of the time. OCLC locates 1 copy in a law library (Social Law).         THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD

1870. [with the leaves still unopened] With Illustrations [by Luke Fildes]. London: Chapman & Hall, April-September 1870. Six monthly serial parts [all that were issued] in original blue-green pictorial wrappers. First Edition, in the monthly serial parts. EDWIN DROOD remains one of the great unfinished and unsolved literary mysteries: Dickens had written only six parts, but serialization had begun, when he died on the 9th of June 1870. While writing, he never disclosed his planned development of the plot, and in fact he took special precautions to guard the denouement; as a result, subsequent proposed solutions have been mere guesswork (most such attempts have used as their basis the eight incidents depicted upon the parts' front covers, drawn by his son-in-law, the brother of Wilkie Collins).~This is overall a near-fine set, with the leaves still unopened in all six parts. About half of Part VI's wrapper spine is chipped away, and there is a little marginal chipping on the fore-edge of Part II's rear wrapper; otherwise there is very little wear. The ads are complete, except that (as is often the case) the "Cork Hat" ad has broken off in Part II (it is a thin sliver of actual printed cork, extremely brittle and delicate). The last part is in the preferred state, with the price change pasted over the former price. Housed in a basic cloth clamshell case. Hatton & Cleaver pp 373-384.

[Two Lincoln Union Ladies' Tickets to the Lincoln Union Ball:] January 5th, 1870 [and] January 26th, 1871

(New York). (1870-1871). Two printed tickets each with a mounted albumen photograph in cabinet card format (4.25 x 6.25 inches). The back side of each ticket has a faint printed design on white glazed paper. Both tickets are neatly trimmed along the right edge, near fine with a few tiny perimeter tears and light toning. The first ticket from 1870 has a mounted albumen photograph of a painting by A.H. Ritchie, of Lincoln with his cabinet reading the Emancipation Proclamation. The second ticket from 1871 has a mounted albumen photograph of a statue of Lincoln reading a newspaper with Grant and whom we believe is Gideon Wells. The Lincoln Union Social Club, a pro-Republican party function, held its first ball in New York City in 1870. These two ephemeral items, tickets for the first and second balls, are not to be confused with the invitations that preceded them. Of the two, the tickets may be a rarer survival. We know of only one other copy of the 1870 ticket at the Library of Congress. .

Illustrated with maps, portraits, views and other engravings. England became inhabited more than 800,000 years ago, as the discovery of flint tools and footprints at Happisburgh in Norfolk has revealed. The earliest evidence for early modern humans in North West Europe, a jawbone discovered in Devon at Kents Cavern in 1927, was re-dated in 2011 to between 41,000 and 44,000 years old. Continuous human habitation in England dates to around 13,000 years ago (see Creswellian), at the end of the last glacial period. The region has numerous remains from the Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age, such as Stonehenge and Avebury. In the Iron Age, England, like all of Britain south of the Firth of Forth, was inhabited by the Celtic people known as the Britons, including some Belgic tribes (e.g. the Atrebates, the Catuvellauni, the Trinovantes, etc.) in the south east. In AD 43 the Roman conquest of Britain began; the Romans maintained control of their province of Britannia until the early 5th century. The end of Roman rule in Britain facilitated the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, which historians often regard as the origin of England and of the English people. The Anglo-Saxons, a collection of various Germanic peoples, established several kingdoms that became the primary powers in present-day England and parts of southern Scotland. They introduced the Old English language, which largely displaced the previous British language. The Anglo-Saxons warred with British successor states in Wales, Cornwall, and the Hen Ogledd (Old North; the Brythonic-speaking parts of northern England and southern Scotland), as well as with each other. Raids by Vikings became frequent after about AD 800, and the Norsemen settled in large parts of what is now England. During this period, several rulers attempted to unite the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, an effort that led to the emergence of the Kingdom of England by the 10th century. Under the Tudors and the later Stuart dynasty, England became a world colonial power. During the rule of the Stuarts, the English Civil War took place between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists, which resulted in the execution of King Charles I (1649) and the establishment of a series of republican governments — first, a Parliamentary republic known as the Commonwealth of England (1649-1653), then a military dictatorship under Oliver Cromwell known as The Protectorate (1653-1659). The Stuarts returned to the restored throne in 1660, though continued questions over religion and power resulted in the deposition of another Stuart king, James II, in the Glorious Revolution (1688). England, which had conquered Wales in the 13th century, united with Scotland in 1707 to form a new sovereign state called Great Britain. Following the Industrial Revolution, Great Britain ruled a worldwide Empire, the largest in recorded history. Following a process of decolonisation in the 20th century, mainly caused by the weakening of Great Britain's power in the two World Wars, almost all of the empire's overseas territories became independent countries. However, as of 2017, its cultural impact remains widespread and deep in many of them. (Wikipedia).

Exploration Géologique la mer morte de la Palestine et De l'idumée

Paris: Arthur Bertrand, 1870. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. With 14 plates (4 double-page and in color) and text illustrations. Later half-morocco over marbled boards; other than some light browning, a very clean interior. Signature of Ph. Robert in pencil on title page. and its environs, considered the most complete survey of the area's prehistory available at the time (Zittel). Though much of the volume covers geology and animal fossils, a notable chapter is devoted to human pre-history in Syria and Palestine. Lartet treats the subject with caution, however, being well aware of the Biblical significance inextricably linked to the area and the potential risk of ruffling more than a few feathers with his observations (he also wanted to avoid embroiling his patron, the Duke of Luynes, in any vitriol). In the Epilogue, Lartet addresses the potential conflict between his findings and those interested in a Biblical interpretation, calling it "the most delicate of all subjects" and noting that his research is only concerned with the physical evidence, not theological debate. It is a bit surprising that Lartet did not go further with his argument; he would have been more than qualified to do so, having discovered the first Cro-Magnon skeletons not ten years prior to this publication. Lartet (1840-1899) was a French geologist and paleontologist. His discovery of the first Cro-Magnon skeletons is considered "one of the most important discoveries in human paleontology" (DSB). Louis' father, Edouard Lartet, was also a renowned paleontologist and major contributor to the burgeoning field of human pre-history. Extremely rare; we could not locate any copies currently on the market or sold at auction. OCLC records only 10 copies in America; Dictionary of Scientific Biography, VIII, pp. 44-45; Zittel, History of Geology, p. 219.
