FABLES OF LA FONTAINE Translated into English Verse by Walter Thornbury

London: Cassell, Petter and Galpin, N.D., circa 1870. A very early printing. With 86 magnificent full page illustrations, many smaller illustrations and a portrait frontispiece all by Gustave Doré. Royal 4to (12.25 by 9.5 inches), in a very handsome deluxe binding of three-quarter green morocco over matching pebbled cloth covered boards, the spine with finely gilt stippled raised bands ruled in blind and with multiple rules in gilt, the head and tail additionally gilt decorated, two compartments boldly gilt lettered, with fine marbled endleaves and page edges. lxiv, 839 pp. A very fine and handsome copy, very handsomely bound, solid and fresh and clean with no sign of the typical foxing associated with these printings. Only very light evidence of age to the binding. A very well preserved and quite excellent copy. A BEAUTIFULLY BOUND AND WELL PRESERVED COPY OF THIS MASTERPIECE BY GUSTAVE DORé. An impressive tome of some of the best loved fables, including ?The Grasshopper and the Ant?, ?The hen with the golden eggs? and well over 150 more. With his full-page engravings Gustave Doré does his best work with great dramatic flare. The countless smaller illustrations round out the book and make it a truly outstanding publishing endeavor. Many of the fables were in the main adapted from the classical fabulists Aesop, Babrius and Phaedrus. In these, La Fontaine adhered to the path of his predecessors with some closeness; but in others he allowed himself far more liberty and there is a wider range of sources. T he Indian Bidpai is drawn upon for oriental fables that had come to the French through translations from Persian. So, while the subject of each of the Fables is often common property of many ages and races, what gives La Fontaine's Fables their rare distinction is the freshness in narration, the deftness of touch, the unconstrained suppleness of metrical structure, and the unfailing humor. Keen insight into the foibles of human nature is also found throughout.

Porto, Viuva Moré, 1870 on front wrapper. - 8°, later quarter cloth over decorated boards, text block edges sprinkled green, original yellow printed wrappers bound in. A few leaves foxed, scattered small stains, some pencilled corrections to text. Overall in very good condition. Author's signed presentation inscription to Antonio Feliciano de Castilho on half title. 283, (1 blank), iii pp. *** The dedication copy of the FIRST EDITION. The dedicatee is Antonio Feliciano de Castilho (see p. 5). Bulhão Pato (1829-1912), a native of Bilbao whose parents were Portuguese, was the author of Poesias (1850), Paquita (1856), and Versos (1862). He was one of the most important Portuguese authors of the Romantic school. He published his first volume of poetry at age 17, astounding the literati by his individuality of style and unaffected simplicity of form. He was a friend and protégé of the historian, poet and historical novelist Alexandre Herculano, and also a friend of Almeida Garrett. Later he was friends with Ramalho Ortigão, Colombano Bordalo Pinheiro, and Eça de Queiroz (whose caricature of Bulhão Pato in Os Maias, in the form of the poet Tomás de Alencar, provoked a violent polemic). His name has been given to a classic of Portuguese cookery, Ameijoas ao Bulhão Pato (clams in a sauce of garlic, olive oil and cilantro).Provenance: Antonio Feliciano de Castilho (1800-1875) ranks (with Almeida Garrett and Herculano) as one of the three best Romantic writers in Portugal, and Bell notes that "His quadras . and his blank verse are alike so easy and natural, his style so harmonious and pure that, despite the lack of observation and originality in these long poems, they have not even to-day lost their place in Portuguese literature." Castilho published numerous works of poetry and prose, founded and edited the Revista universal lisbonense (1841-45), and began the series "Livraria Classica Portuguesa," for which he wrote the studies of Bernardes and Garcia de Resende. He also translated works of Ovid, Molière, and Anacreon. His translation of Goethe's Faust is particularly well-known for the controversy it raised among students of German language and literature ("a questão faustina"). Following Almeida Garrett's death and Herculano's retreat to Val-de-Lôbos, Castilho became the leading figure of the Romantic movement in Portugal. His 1865 prologue to a work by Pinheiro Chagas, which condemned the young writers of Coimbra (Antero de Quental, Teofilo Braga, Vieira de Castro) for "nebulosidade," incited Quental to write Bom senso e bom gôsto. A native of Lisbon, Castilho became blind at the age of six but nevertheless went on to earn a degree in law from Coimbra. Aside from his literary production, he invented a new method for teaching children to read, the methodo portuguez, and attempted to implement it while serving as Commissario Geral de Instrucção Primaria. See Bell, Portuguese Literature, pp. 299-300; Saraiva & Lopes, História da literatura portuguesa (1976) pp. 810-15; Grande enciclopedia VI, 201-12.*** Innocêncio VII, 50; XVIII, 157.         Eden" originales Ölgemälde auf Malpappe ca.41x26cm; rechts unten (photographisch schwer widergebar) betitelt; verso handschriftlich bezeichnet "Hans Marées" um 1870 [Maße im farblich Abgestimmten Holzrahmen 60x44cm.]

      - "Eden" original oil painting on cardboard approx. 41x26cm; down right titeled "Eden" backside handwritten named "Hans Marées" about 1870 [Dimension of the colour matched wooden frame 60x44cm.] Even to the modern observer, Hans von Marées' paintings seem to have a mysterious and enigmatic quality. the coherence of the human body. The depiction of nude human figures casually arranged in landscapes, All the more surprising that according to his own words, his entire life was spent trying to understand this strict reduction of forms and the bucolic illustration of a simple life close to nature became his main motif.

Modern library buckram, title gilt to spine. Folding map and a facsimile plate of an inscription. From the library of British Arabist and colonial agent Col. S. B. Miles (1838–1914), bequeathed by his widow to Bath Public Library in 1920, with associated manuscript shelf-mark to the title page, and library plate to the front free endpaper. Light spotting, title page browned and marked, sig. 19 repaired, small spot to map. A good copy. First edition. Adolf von Wrede, a Bavarian nobleman, was "the first scientific traveller who succeeded in penetrating into the region of Hadhramaut" (van der Meulen, cited after Trautz, "Adolf von Wrede", in Journal of the Royal Central Asian Society, vol. 20, no. 4, 1933). He travelled to the region, now part of Yemen, in 1843, becoming the first European visitor in 250 years. He reached as far inland as Daw'an, where his baggage was stolen and he was forced to turn back to the coast. Some of his claims, notably his account of an apparently bottomless pit of quicksand, met with ridicule and damaged his credibility. He later emigrated to Texas, where he committed suicide in 1870; he may have also spent some time in the Ottoman army. Scarce: three copies only in UK and Irish libraries (Cambridge, Edinburgh and Oxford).

Contemporary limp vellum (given a reddish-brown surface stain), leather thong ties.

      - De Backer & Sommervogel I, cols. 996-997; Bucker, Bibl. d. deutschen Drucke des XVI Jhts. I, Dillingen, p. 101, no. 172; Index Aureliensis 114322; Lach & Van Kley I, p. 431; VD 16, B-2149; W. van Nieuwenhoff, Gaspar Berse of de Nederlandsche Franciscus Xavierius (1870). First edition, in the original Latin, of two letters written in 1549 and 1551 by the Jesuit missionary Gaspar Berse (1515-1553) from Hormuz Island in the Gulf. They give a detailed account of the Malabar and Coromandel coasts in western and southern India, from the Gulf to Ceylon, and of Ceylon itself, especially concerning the Jesuit mission for the region. It was published posthumously by Sebald Mayer, the first printer in Dilingen, where he worked from 1550 to 1576. Berse, sometimes called "the Dutch Saint Francis Xavier", sent the two letters to his fellow Jesuits in Coimbra, Portugal in December 1549 and in 1551. They provided many Europeans with their first "modern" description of India and Ceylon. Some of the types were cut by Peter Schoeffer the younger, others by Guyot and Tavernier in Antwerp, Schoefer's 1537 italic used for the 17-page dedicatory preface, being the first (after one uninfluential predecessor) to use sloped capitals. It displaced Aldine-style italics through much of Europe and served as model for more elegant italics that set the style still used today. With a lovely 1574 inscription in reddish-brown ink in an Italian-style hand, mentioning the Count of Helfenstein in Gundelfingen in Swabia. In very good condition, with the spine somewhat faded.

Edmonds (Dilly) with Guy Darling and Bob Fellows leaving England, and being joined in South Africa by John Dunn and Captain Walmesley John Robert Dunn (1834-1895) a South African settler, hunter, and diplomat of Scottish dissent his love of hunting took him regularly into Zululand. An influential man in the area, Dunn became a close and respected friend of the Zulu chief Cetshwayo being given tracts of land in Zululand and having a number of Zulu wives. The diary consists of 126 full manuscript pages + a 10-page game register. Clearly written in ink with date shown in most cases. Spelling of names may differ to today's equivalent i.e. Hippopotamuses referred to as Seacows Bound in the original full plain green morroco binding 13.5 cm x 18.5 cm 7 ½ x 5 ¼ inches some light rubbing to edges. The diary begins with the party leaving Falmouth on March the 12th. They sight Table Mountain on 13th April There are various observations and episodes of the journey including shooting Porpoises Albatrosses etc. They meet with a Captain Watson 11th regiment who is planning to come up to Dunns country with them, "a great bore but cannot be helped, I fear we shall be to many guns on the ground". The party leave Durban on the 29th receiving a letter from Captain Walmesley the government agent that he would join the party at the Tugela river on the 4th. There are various references to equipping out the expedition getting guns' powder, wagons etc. "Setting out on the 6th May and crossing the Tugela river and leaving our horses on the Natal side as the river is running to fast JD is waiting to greet us and welcomes us to Zululand. Dunn reflects on how the land abounded with game 15 years ago and tells us the best shooting will be at the end. We spend time in the area shooting Buck plains game etc. We meet our first Zulus on the 24th "a primitive people". On the 26th we leave for new Buck country, Dunn goes to his place some 27 miles away and to see Ketowayo (Cetshwayo)." A great deal of shooting for seacows (Hippos). We cross the Nyalazi on the 23rd the next day we watch the Zulus hunt and hear about a Dutchman 6 miles away who is expected to die of fever. There is a party of Dutch hunters who had spoiled our hunting on the Umfolozi. Various hunting episodes taking place, we pass Baldwin's camp where only 2 out of his party of 7 survived "but the climate has altered since", (In 1860 Baldwin's 1st safari after Hippo, 8 of his 10 white companions died of Malaria). From now on there is a great deal of hunting recorded and observation a large number of Rhinos being shot and numerous plains game. It is remarkable how many animals were wounded or badly shot and not retrieved. Many near misses for the guns and their kaffir boys being charged by rhino's. On the 16th we move camp I saw W nearly a mile off, he arrived covered in blood after shooting a lion and thinking it was dead he advanced and was attacked by the lion.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1870 - 1870 Wisden Original Wrappers

On offer here is a very rare 1870 Wisden still in it's original wrappers and in very good overall condition. As can be seen from the photographs, the front and rear wrappers are a little marked - mainly foxing. A facsimile spine has been added to the book in recent times. That repair was not carried out by me, but I suspect that at one time the book was rebound in hard boards and at some stage the book has been taken out of the boards and a facsimile spine attached. Internally, the title page and the first few pages have some foxing as do the last couple of pages but otherwise the contents are in excellent, clean, unmarked condition - most unusual for a book of this vintage. Overall, a really nice example.

PT Barnum ALS in the year that he founded his traveling circus

Bridgeport, CT, September 17, 1870. 5" x 7.75". "Single page ALS on lightly lined paper with PT Barnum's letterhead, 5"" x 7.75"". Inlaid to another sheet to a size of 7"" x 10.75'. Neatly penned ALS dated ""September 17/70"" and signed by P.T. Barnum as ""P.T. Barnum"". A few faint handling marks with one small stain.A lovely ALS by PT Barnum, written from his home headquarters in Bridgeport, CT and written in the first year that Barnum invented his traveling circus established as ""P. T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome,"" a traveling circus, menagerie and museum of ""freaks"" It went through various names: ""P.T. Barnum's Travelling World's Fair, Great Roman Hippodrome and Greatest Show On Earth,"" and after an 1881 merger with James Bailey and James L. Hutchinson, ""P.T. Barnum's Greatest Show On Earth, And The Great London Circus, Sanger's Royal British Menagerie and The Grand International Allied Shows United,"" soon shortened to ""Barnum & Bailey's."" This entertainment phenomenon was the first circus to display 3 rings, which made it the largest circus the world had ever seen. His letter addressed to Alfred noted that he would be ""glad to have a ""blow out"" with you ..."" and referenced ""when we (illegible) to town next""Previous to his traveling circus, Barnum garnered his success having had already dappled in his ""attractions of the odd"" with a variety troupe called ""Barnum's Grand Scientific and Musical Theater,"" .The timing could not have been worse as it was followed by the Panic of 1837 and three years of difficult circumstances, he purchased Scudder's American Museum in New York City, in 1841. Barnum improved the attraction, renamed ""Barnum's American Museum,"" upgrading the building and adding exhibits, and it became a popular showplace. Barnum added a lighthouse lamp which attracted attention up and down Broadway and flags along the roof's edge that attracted attention in daytime. From between the upper windows, giant paintings of animals drew stares from pedestrians. The roof was transformed to a strolling garden with a view of the city, where he launched hot-air balloon rides daily. A changing series of live acts and curiosities, including albinos, giants, midgets, ""fat boys,"" jugglers, magicians, exotic women, detailed models of cities and famous battles, and, eventually, a menagerie of animals were added to the exhibits of stuffed animals. An intriguing man, chameleon in nature, whose entrepreneurism began as a young husband who early on had several businesses: a general store, a book auctioning trade, real estate speculation, and a statewide lottery network. Known for his belief that a ""Sucker is born every minute"", PT Barnum lived that belief and used it to his advantage as the premise employed in his novelty shows"

[Ruskin Interest- La Touche, Rose. [John Ruskin] Clouds & Light

London: James Nisbet & Company, 1870. First edition. 12mo. Original publisher's brown embossed cloth, gilt lettering on cover, 139pp. Excessively rare first (and only book?) by Rose La Touche, pupil and cherished "pet" of John Ruskin, who is memorialized in lore as being the object of John Ruskin's obssessive love, and by whose failure to return that love, Ruskin was driven into dark depths of depression and, some felt, temporary insanity. "'Clouds and Light' is absolutely central to this key episode in Victorian literary history insofar as it is a series of devotional essays and allegorical stories graphically illustrating the self-punitive love of Christ that prevented its authoress from sending any earthly love in Ruskin's direction. Indeed, so intense did her unearthly love become, that she took to her bed and gave up almost all the compensations of this world (including food) and died a lingering death from self-inflicted starvation at the tragically young age of 27. As the news came in Ruskin declared, "the little story of my wild Rose was ended, and the hawthorn blossoms, this year, would fall - over her…" Further, John Ruskin based his famous book, "Sesame and Lillies" (1865) on La Touche. Ruskin first met Rose when she was only nine years old, in 1858, when he was about to turn 39. The two remained in correspondence until Rose reached 18. Rose was a precocious Irish girl with whom Ruskin was almost immediately taken, at first a kind of fascination, but later turning to adoration and an all-consuming infatuation. Rose's parents refused permission for Ruskin to marry their daughter, and the author George MacDonald, entrusted by her parents to oversee Rose's welfare, interceded to prevent the union. After Rose became legally free to decide for herself, she still refused Ruskin, unless the union would remain unconsummated, but Ruskin declined. Rose La Touche tragically died at the age of 27, of an assortment of presumed maladies including madness, anorexia, a broken heart, mania, or a combination of these. Rose and Ruskin's romance is alluded to in Nabokov's novel, Lolita. Very good and tight, with one small 'stab' mark on cloth that makes its way through a few leaves unobtrusively. No copies appear anywhere on the net, and we believe none have appeared in the public trade in decades.

Il Guarany Opera-Ballo in Quattro Atti... Espressamente scritta pel R. Teatro alla Scala in Milano e rappresentata il 19 Marzo 1870. 18733_ Canto e Pianoforte_ Fr. 50. [Piano-vocal score]

Worldcat (2 copies only, at Northwestern and the University of Washington). OCLC no. 26597978. Il Guarany, to a libretto by Antonio Scalvini and Carlo D'Ormeville, after J. de Alencar, was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on March 19, 1870. "...It was the triumphal success of Il Guarany at La Scala on 19 March 1870 that brought [Gomez] international fame. The opera was produced at Rio de Janeiro on the emperor's birthday (2 December 1870) as well as in almost all European capitals in the next few years. Verdi heard it in Ferrara in 1872 and referred to it in a letter as the work of a 'truly musical genius'... Gomes's works reveal a high dramatic sense and his melodic invention a rich lyricism. Within the established patterns of Italian opera of the later 19th century he achieved an uncontested mastery." Gerard Béhague in Grove Music Online.. Folio.
