First U.S. edition. The author's first prose book. A cornerstone of nineteenth century fantastic literature. "An allegorical novel, strongly influenced by early 19th century German Romanticism, particularly Novalis, whom the author frequently quotes ... PHANTASTES is a sometimes brilliant, sometimes cloying story of great originality." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1066. "... a work of the most vivid imaginative power, serving as a - perhaps the - seminal work of modern fantasy. The tale presents an archetypal view of faeryland, where those who enter 'must go on, and go through it' ... MacDonald's place at the fountainhead of fantasy is not due solely to this work, but even if this were all that we had of him, it would assure him of a place among the great fantasists. His impact on Lewis is immeasurable ... and his influence on Carroll, Dunsany, Lindsay, Tolkien, Le Guin, and many, many more makes him a must for all readers of fantasy." - Tymn (ed), Fantasy Literature: a Core Collection, pp. 131-132.       New York: S.W. Green, Printer. 1870. First. First edition. Printed gray-green wrappers. 118pp,. illustrated, folding map. Wraps splitting at the spine folds, a stain and ink splashes on the front wrap, still a sound, very good copy. An account of the journey to the fabled town of Musadu (also called Musardu), in today's Guinea, by Anderson, a Baltimore-born, African-American explorer and cartographer who served as both Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of the Interior of Liberia, and who, as an explorer and politician, was instrumental in that nation establishing a greater presence in the interior of Africa. [With]: Blyden. Appendix.... Printed self-wrappers, 14pp., folding facsimile letter in Arabic. Near fine. Blyden was a St. Thomas-born, Liberian statesman and educator. When Blyden was rejected from a theological college in the United States because of his race he emigrated to Liberia in 1847, where he eventually served as Secretary of State from 1864 to 1866. From 1871 to 1873 Blyden lived in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he edited Negro, the first explicitly pan-African journal in West Africa. He also led two important expeditions to Fouta Djallon in the interior. In 1885 he was an unsuccessful candidate for the Liberian presidency. He later was the Liberian ambassador to Britain and France, and still later served as President of Liberia College. Also issued in cloth, the wrappered issue of the Anderson is rare; so is the Blyden Appendix. .

Our Colored Brother" Comes Up to Bat with the 15th Amendment

New York 1870 - Print. "The Great National Game" from the graphic newspaper "Punchinello." New York, N.Y., April 23, 1870. 16 pp. 9 x 13 in. This full-page engraving, "The Great National Game," satirizes the recently-passed constitutional amendment granting African-American men the right to vote. The baseball motif, popularized in presidential politics, depicts a black man with stereotyped features holding a bat labeled "15th amendment" about to hit a ball stylized with the stars and stripes. The image caption heralds the arrival of African Americans to full political rights "Our colored brother: 'Hi Yah! Stan back dar; its dis chiles innins now.' " Historical BackgroundThe black man in this image has "41st Congress" labeled on his belt. The 41st Congress was dominated by Republicans, both Radical and moderate, who were committed to passing civil rights measures in the wake of the Civil War. The members of Congress, sitting when the 15th Amendment was ratified, look from the background at the results of their handiwork. Unsurprisingly, their work was controversial to both southerners and northern abolitionists: A woman holding a bat labeled "16th amendment" stands on deck. In actuality, the 16th amendment gave Congress the right to tax income and was ratified in 1913. However, in this instance, it references the heated debate over granting women the right to vote now that African Americans had gained it. The debate created a schism between leading civil rights advocates such as Frederick Douglass and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, as the former retreating from woman suffrage after blacks gained the franchise. Women finally received their voting rights in 1920 with ratification of the 19th Amendment. The Reconstruction amendments to the Constitution ended slavery (13th), provided equal protection and citizenship to all Americans (14th), and granted voting rights with the 15th Amendment, ratified on February 3, 1870. Intended to expand the franchise to the freedmen, the wording of the amendment prohibited restricting the right to vote based on "race, color, or previous condition of servitude." In so doing, it opened the door to other restrictions such as literacy tests and poll taxes.Other contentious issues in post-Civil War American politics are symbolized here: Secretary of State William Seward had pushed the U.S. to purchase Alaska three years earlier, and the Alaska native represents what most Americans considered to be "Seward's folly." Similarly, the stereotyped Chinese immigrant suggests the rising tide of anti-Chinese sentiment after the Gold Rush and completion of the transcontinental railroad. The 41st Congress also passed the Force Act of 1870 to address the increasing violence of the Ku Klux Klan. With the passage of the 15th Amendment, African Americans were not only eligible to vote, but also to hold office, and Hiram Rhodes Revels was elected to the U.S. Senate from Mississippi, joining the 41st Congress as the first African American in Congress.

A Practical Treatise on Mine Engineering.

      - Newcastle, Lambert; London, Spon 1870. Two volumes quarto modern half morocco preserving the original cloth sides & marbled endpapers (edges a little worn); [8],255pp, 64 colour litho plates (all but three double page). A few spots, occasional useful pencilling; a quite handsome set. Second edition, much revised, rewritten and reconstructed to encompass progress since the first (1855) edition. Determinedly practical, Greenwell registers his gratification for works already laid out following his advice and reiterates that the instructions here can be 'safely followed with proper working results.' It is also a very pretty book, if a mining book may be called that. The plates, even those of strata, are appealing. Strata, fossils, machinery - all these work as graphic designs - as do particularly (believe it) some plans of coal workings. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

VIKRAM AND THE VAMPIRE or Tales of Hindu Devilry

[London and] New York [Longmans, Green and Co and] D. Appleton & Co. [1870] - First edition, issue in the green cloth, this copy with the rare Appleton title-slug printed in London and using the first edition UK sheets. With illustrations by Ernest Griset. 8vo, original green cloth gilt lettered and pictorially decorated in black on spine and upper cover. xxiv, 319. A very bright and attractive copy, unusually so. Expert and essentially unnoticeable strengthening to the head and tail of the spine. Very tight, clean and bright internally. These stories were adapted by Burton from stories included in the BAITAL PACHISI, a Hindu version of the traditional vampire tales. Penzer says these traditional tales were written in Sanskrit some time after 1070 A.D., though they were carried by oral tradition much earlier. He also states that, although copies of the second and third issue of this book do turn up, "they are seldom in good condition" (Penzer, p. 82). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter Signed, to Arctic philanthropist Henry Grinnell, outlining a plan for an expedition to the North Pole

Washington, D.C, february 19, 1870. Folded 8vo sheet. 4pp. About fine . An important letter from the doomed Arctic explorer Hall (1821 - November 8, 1871), who was eventually murdered on the expedition which he outlines in this letter to Grinnell " - My general plan for my Polar voyage is briefly to have 2 small vessels one a steam propeller of 150 tons, but the same with complete sail rig, the other a top-sail schooner of 125 tons & both vessels with 24 hands all told. My route would be into Josef's Sound & thence as sea & land would permit up toward the Pole. After getting the vessels as far as practicable, I should then secure them in harbor making the rest of the distance by dogs & sledges. The object of this voyage is of 3 fold Character. 1st for geographical discoveries; 2nd for Science; & 3d for Commerce. The finding of new Whaling grounds which must likely lie in the route I propose would of course result beneficially to Commerce. My Sea Masters, of course, would be well experienced Arctic Whalers, the policy having been adhered to by Parry, Franklin, Ross & Kane & other Arctic Explorers . . . In three to five years, I doubt not, with the same aid & protection of High Heaven as on my 2 previous Arctic Voyages I would fully accomplish the determination of my burning soul, which determination my dear Mr. Grinnell, you know to be to put my foot on the North extremity of the axis of the globe -" Hall did in fact receive Congressional financing for his voyage, which was the first American attempt to reach the Pole; and in September 1871 he reached Greenland with his crew on board The Polaris. The expedition, however, was ill-fated from the beginning. Disagreements among the crew and a power struggle for command ensued, and Hall's authority was resented by many of the crew members. In November of 1871, Hall was poisoned to death by arsenic (according to modern scholarship). The expedition continued but proved unsuccessful, with the ship stuck in the pack and much of the crew stranded in drifting ice

1870 - DICKENS, Charles. THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD. With Twelve Illustrations by S. L. Fildes, and a Portrait. London: Chapman & Hall, [April - September] 1870. First edition. A total of 14 illustrations, including a portrait of Dickens and a vignette title-page. Octavo. [viii,1]-190,[2] pp. In the original six monthly parts, as issued, in blue paper wrappers. Housed in a green three-quarter leather pull-off case in a green cloth chemise. Wrappers show some general light wear but, some minor expert repair and are very good overall. The front wrap on Part 1 has a small ink spot near one edge and shows a bit more wear than the other wrappers. Almost all advertisements are present, including the rare cork ad in Part 2, lacking only four pages (nos. 7 - 10) of the "Edwin Drood Advertiser" in Part 3 and the eight-page Chapman & Hall catalog in Part 5. Another minor difference, the eight-page Chapman & Hall catalog in Part 1 is not completely unpaginated; pages 2 and 3 are marked as such. Part 6 has the "Eighteenpence" slip pasted over the original price on front wrap as found in the earliest issues. Some plates show mild light foxing. Text leaves are clean. This was Dickens' last work; it was left unfinished at his death in June, 1870. (Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 371-384). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Narrative of a Journey to Musardu, the Capital of the Western Mandingoes [with] Appendix to Benj. Anderson's Journey to Musadu. An Exact Facsimile of a letter from the King of Musadu to the President of Liberia, written by a young Mandingo, at Musadu, in Arabic, in the latter Part of 1868

Also issued in cloth, the wrappered issue of the Anderson is rare; so is the Blyden Appendix. .

Diorama of dancers -19th century color lithography

unknown city, ca 1870. Framed. Very good to fine condition. folioA anonymous, unique composition of what appears to be a company of dancers or actors. Each is posed in a coquettish manner, interacting as a group and looking at the viewer. Each is gayley attired in elaborate harlequin costumes adorned with applied complicated silk ruffles and ties; all are accomplished in similar manner. The outfits vary, but each is adorned with individually mounted pressed metallic flakes to mimic jewels. The figures were produced through color lithography and mounted in relief to give the impression of depth to the scene. The item measures appx. 30 1/4 x 25 3/4 inches without the frame. There is no information available as to its origin. But given the quality of the lithography and subject matter a guess would be French.

Haley & O'Neill Tract Homestead Association

San Francisco 1870 - Britton and Rey, Publishers “Haley & O'Neill Tract Homestead Association” San Francisco: 1870 Lithograph 28” x 33” framed The printing firm of Britton & Rey was undoubtedly the largest producer of lithographs in California in the mid to late 19th century. The two men were the Currier & Ives of the West, resembling that famous combination not only in the volume of their production but in their personal relationship as well. This Britton and Rey lithograph, published in 1870, was an advertisement for tracts of land in what is now the southern San Francisco neighborhood of Potrero Hill. During this era in San Francisco history, Homestead Associations, which were usually private companies, would purchase large tracts of land on the fringes of the city and then recruited members. Members paid an initial fee or deposit, which ranged from ten to a hundred dollars, followed by monthly payments of ten dollars. Once the member had paid the appropriate amount, he acquired a title to a house lot. In this instance the Haley and O'Neill Homestead Association offered lots for $10 per month, with the total payment being $510 to acquire a lot. The center and corner vignettes show various views of the tracts of land for sale: looking towards the Mission neighborhood, on Sixteenth Avenue, looking toward the bay, and looking southeast. As praised on this one-sheet, the "locality is a favorite one with the citizens of San Francisco, having all the advantages of the water front, and being near the terminus of several important railroads that must come in the Southern part of the city." Also, as advertised, lots were available for $510 each to be made in payments of $10 per month. During the early 1870s several corrupt homestead associations scammed their members, in one instance selling tracts of land that were submerged in water, and homestead associations all but vanished by 1876. Still, homestead associations were an important early force in populating the fringe neighborhoods of the city. This lithograph is a snapshot into a brief moment of history in the growing city of San Francisco.
