        The Innocents Abroad - or - The New Pilgrims' Progress

      American Publishing Company, Hartford 1870 - Though bearing prior owners' notations, it is worthwhile to note that the stamp at the first (blank) page is that of Cassius M. Clay, then of Mexico, Missouri, prior to his career as an abolitionist and statesman, with the inscription of his father, Green Clay, at the title page, dated 1870 with a given location of St. Louis. Recently restored by Lawrence Yerkes, this copy bears tidy page repair at the front free endpaper and upper first (blank) page, some cloth replacement at spine heel and head, and refinishing at the board corners. The pages are clean save for a very few scattered instances of foxing, a few small and light spots of dust soil at the head edge of the page block, and an ink spot at the foreedge of the page block intruding barely a millimeter into the leaf faces; the tissue guard at the double frontis shows some foxing with related discolouration in the margins of the frontis pages. The binding is remarkably tight, the impressed publisher's logo and decoration at fore and rear beautifully intact, the gilt at the front only very slightly darkened, the gilt at the spine showing some spots of rubbing obscuring a few letters but largely intact. The rear board shows a dark spot at the right and some modest, gentle spotting at left, uppers, and lowers, matched on the front and there showing some areas of surface attenuation and a little rising of the cloth at the lower left front, but the cloth remains overall quite stunningly attractive. Later issue of first edition. 234 black-and-white plate illustrations; double frontis; 651pp + five pages of ads.; pages xvii and xviii of the table of contents have page numbers; last entry on page xviii ends with the word "conclusion"; engraved portrait of Napoleon III at p.129; heading on p. 643 is "CHAPTER LXI"; third page of printed ads begins with "Personal History of Ulysses S.       New York: Endicott & Co. Lithographers. 1870. Edition unknown. Small broadside. Approximately 4" x 9" (23 x 10 cm.), text and decorative border printed in purple ink. Two short tears, and very slight loss in the margins, all at the upper extremities, and touching no printing, else fine. Tipped at the top to an acid-free sheet. Housed in an older cloth chemise, and purple quarter-morocco and cloth slipcase that exhibits some modest wear. A rarity, and a bibliographical puzzle. BAL locates many variants of this title, but not this one. OCLC locates two copies at UC Berkeley, and at the Bancroft Library (which is also at Berkeley) and attributes it to the dates "1870-1879?" However, OCLC locates no other works by this publisher after 1867. As this is dated 1870 in print at the conclusion of the text, one must assume Endicott still existed at least until that date. .

Original lithographed envelope. Minor soiling and chipping to envelope, otherwise fine, housed in light blue cloth chemise. BAL 7248 . We have not, until now, seen a colored copy of this work. The coloring here is done in a fine, contemporary, hand. Laid in is an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ("BRET HARTE"), dated Glasgow, September 24, 1880, to Herrn N. Trübnur in Baden, Germany: "Gentlemen, Will you kindly send me Mr. Nicholas Trübner [word unclear] address, and when you expect him to return to Sweden, and oblige." Harte, who had been appointed United States Consul at Crefeld, Prussia, was in 1880 transferred to the same position at Glasgow, Scotland. He served there until 1885

      Chicago: Western News Company, 1870. First Edition, First Printing . Full Morocco. Very Good. Uncommon to find in the hand-colored version. 8vo. 22.5 by 18 cm. Nine hand-colored plates of light narrative verse of card players avenging themselves on a Chinese cheat. Obviously politically incorrect as it plays into negative stereotypes and distrust of the Chinese who first came to the American West in numbers to build the transcontinental railroad. All plates are first printing except 6, which is the second state. BAL 7246. In this copy the separately issued cards have been mounted onto a light card stock and bound in full blue morocco. The binding is rubbed along the joints, somewhat dry on the spine and has other wear. Tight and clean within.

      Chicago:: The Western News Co,. 1870.. Very good. Harte celebrated satire in anti Chinese feeling which was perverted into a war cry against 'Chinese cheap labor". Very important and scarce, with original printed envelope. A satiric look at race relations which established Bret Harte's literary reputation. 9 cartoon series in original envelope, with story by Bret Harte and with cartoons by Joseph Hull. Numbered cartoons with text below depict a card game between 2 western miners ("Truthful James" and "Bill Nye") and a Chinese ("Ah Sin"), in which the Chinese is more proficient at cheating at cards, and for which he is beaten by a mob. With the line ""Can this be? We are ruined by cheap Chinese labor". 5 x 7 1/4 in cards, in original envelope, with a small bookseller's stamp laid in "Burnton's, 92 Fourth Av", and with an inscription at the upper right. Original envelope dusty, with short tears at edges, cards themselves clean, very good condition.

Occasional spots or smudges on the mounts; the prints have some of the usual Nettleton speckling but are brighter and clearer than most I've seen. In all a fairly splendid copy. This fantastically vivid and full watercolor drawing, from the artist very early on in her career, depicts a young woman holding in her right hand a large silver tankard and looking somewhat horrified as two huge frogs and two snakes jump and slither out of her mouth. An old woman who is facing her, is in fact a fairy who has cast a spell on the girl. She had put the girl to a test to see if she would be kind and obliging, but unfortunately the girl failed the test miserably and the outcome, as we can see, resulted in toads and vipers falling from her lips every time she speaks. Therein, surely lies a lesson to be learnt!"She had no sooner reached the fountain, than a lady most magnificently dressed came out of the woodland path, and asked Fanny to give her some water. This was the same Fairy who had before appeared as a poor old woman; and she came for the same purpose, that was, to try whether the young girl was kind and obliging; but lest she should only pretend goodness in order to gain the precious gift, the Fairy appeared in a different form."I did not come here to draw water for strangers," said Fanny, scornfully; "I suppose you think the best silver tankard was brought on purpose for your ladyship! However you may drink out of it if you have a fancy."You are not very obliging," said the Fairy; "and since you have behaved with so little civility, I will bestow a gift on you which shall be your punishment. Every time you speak, there shall drop from you lips a viper or a toad." Having said these words she disappeared; and Fanny went home very sullen and angry." (Diamonds and Toads)."In 1869 Kate began an important illustration commission - six watercolour designs for Diamonds and Toads, a children's toybook published by Frederick Warne. She used her eighteen-year-old sister Fanny as a model, (let's hope she modeled the younger woman in this watercolor on Fanny and not the older one !!) and took over a year to complete her most ambitious project to date.She earned £36 from the colour printer, Kronheim, for her watercolour designs for Diamonds and Toads.Kate's sister, Fanny married a distant cousin who came from the notorious Dadd family (Richard Dadd had killed his father and lived out his life in a home for the criminally insane and another uncle and his sister had suffered similar illnesses). It seems highly likely that Kate found Richard Dadd's work attractive for his fairies and gnomes published in S.C. Hall's Book of British Ballads (1842) were in a style she had long admired. Moreover, two years after Fanny's marriage into the Dadd family, there was still interest in Richard's work, despite his lengthy confinement. It is interesting to consider Richard Dadd's influence on Kate's early work. For example, a comparison between Richard's 'Passion Series' watercolours of the mid-1850s and Kate's watercolour drawings for Diamonds and Toads, published fifteen years later, is quite revealing. There is a startling similarity of technique, as in the grotesque facial expressions and wide, frightening eyes emphasized by firm outlines. The work of both throughout this period is marked by the continual presence of witches and demonic gnomes. In addition, could Kate perhaps have had Richard in mind when she wrote the following maxims in a notebook found among her papers? 'Great wits to madness sure are near allied, of thin partitions do their bounds divide.Scandal will rub out like dirt when it is dry.There's a skeleton in every house'"."If ever there was a beautiful soul, it was the soul of Kate Greenaway".(Rodney Engen, Kate Greenaway; British Artists. Bixby./From/'D'Andrassi'". Laid in a velvet lined hinged box composed of alternating lengthwise strips of light- and dark-stained oak, upper cover with four inlaid strips of contrasing light and dark oak forming the initial "L" . Humorous sketches and cartoons by a talented amateur (most probably smitten by Miss Bixby), e.g., "Catching the Early Train" (a man's quick and dignified step becomes a run, then he flies, then he leaps and barely grabs on to the caboose), "Fitzdawdle's Search for Country Board" (a city slicker's vacation in the country ends in disillusionment), a humrous boxing sequence, "A Tale of a Big Watermelon", etc., etc. With a self-portrait by the author/artist on the first page, inscribed "Prof Henri d'Andrassé." In a most unusual presentation American binding and box. Miss Bixby is almost certainly related to the American book collector of Bolton Landing, N.Y., (where the book was acquired), William K. Bixby (1857-1931), President of the American Car and Foundry Company

Pages with age toning and minor rippling. 34 are of landscapes, cityscapes, and ruins, most of which are by Giorgio Sommer with a few by Mang and Rive. Scenes with people in many of Sommer's images. The remaining 66 are mostly of art with a few of sculptures. Tonal quality of most is Good+ to Very Good. .

      New York Theo. Stroefer 1870 - First edition thus. With 36 full page engravings plus the engraved titlepage all by Wilhelm von Kaulbach and printed from the 1846 Stuttgart plates. Includes the suppressed plate of the "erotic cat" which was banned from some editions. Also with Kaulback’s head and tale pieces throughout. Large 4to, in the publisher’s original red morocco over red cloth covered boards, covers with a triple decorative boarder around finely stylized gilt lettering, all within multiple frames in blind, the spine with fine gilt lettering and decorations within compartments separated by raised bands ruled in blind and with additional triple gilt fillet rules, edges beveled, silk moire endleaves and free-flies, a.e.g. 236pp. A fine copy, internally clean and bright and solid, the red cloth vivid with bright gilt, some rubbing at the lower corners and a bit too at the spine tips. A VERY FINE AND HANDSOME PRODUCTION, this issue for Stoefer in New York was actually printed in Stuttgart by Bär and Hermann. It is a wonderfully large presentation of Kaulach’s famous engravings. His vigorous designs for Goethe’s satirical fable are playful and expressive. This 1870 production is superior to the American issue printed by Robert Brothers in Boston seventeen years later. The story of REYNARD THE FOX comes from Medieval folklore and its exact original are unknown. Goethe’s famous take on the sly, amoral, cowardly, and self-seeking hero ‘Reineke Fuchs’ first appeared with the plates of Wilhelm von Kaulback in Germany in 1846.         A History of British Birds

      George Bell & Sons, LONDON 1870 - A nice set of the second edition of Morris's History of British Birds. In 6 volumes with original decorative cloth bindings and 365 hand coloured plates as called for. The bindings are all clean with bright gilt pictures of birds to each front board and gilt titles and decoration to spine. There is some wear: volume I has slight cloth splitting at the hinges and splitting at the rear endpaper with rubbing to corners; volumes II, III and IV have very slight pulling to top and bottom of spine and a little rubbing at corners; volume V has very small splits at the top and bottom of the spine; and volume VI has a 1 inch tear at the top of the spine (with no loss) and scuffing at the corners. Internally all have the original endpapers; the first section including the frontispiece is becoming loose on volumes I, II, and III; volume IV is sound but the stitching is looser than on the others. There is a little spotting to some plates and text pages but in general the contents are very clean (looking unread) and the plates are bright and well coloured. A few plates in volume III lack tissue guards and the plate of the Whitethroat is present but detached. Volume 5 has 4 plates present but detached: the Little Stint, Schinz's Sandpiper, Pochard and Polish Swan - and pages 131-134 the same. A few pages have been roughly opened and a few have darkening to edges. Overall the set is complete, with bright bindings and well coloured plates. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      The Western News Co,, Chicago: 1870 - Harte celebrated satire in anti Chinese feeling which was perverted into a war cry against 'Chinese cheap labor". Very important and scarce, with original printed envelope. A satiric look at race relations which established Bret Harte's literary reputation. 9 cartoon series in original envelope, with story by Bret Harte and with cartoons by Joseph Hull. Numbered cartoons with text below depict a card game between 2 western miners ("Truthful James" and "Bill Nye") and a Chinese ("Ah Sin"), in which the Chinese is more proficient at cheating at cards, and for which he is beaten by a mob. With the line "Can this be? We are ruined by cheap Chinese labor". 5 x 7 1/4 in cards, in original envelope, with a small bookseller's stamp laid in "Burnton's, 92 Fourth Av", and with an inscription at the upper right. Of particular interest is the portrait of Richard Theodore Greener, Harvard College's first black graduate and the first black graduate of a top-tier university (Slater, "The Blacks who First Entered the World of White Higher Education" p. 48-9). "Among the representative young men of color in the United States--and now, happily in the process of time, their name is legion--Richard Theodore Greener has undisputed standing" (George Washington Williams, HISTORY OF THE NEGRO RACE IN AMERICA FROM 1619 TO 1880, p. 438). Born in Philadelphia and raised in Boston, Greener (1844-1922) was light complected, having several European ancestors, though he never attempted to "pass" as white. His early schooling was erratic--after his father left for California to prospect for gold, Greener was forced to take various clerk and hotel jobs to help support his family. Employers noted Greener's intellectual gifts and encouraged him in a self-directed course of study. Greener also began attending political and abolitionist lectures and was eventually able to resume his formal education when a benevolent employer sponsored his enrollment at Oberlin. He then studied two years at Phillips Academy, Andover, and was accepted to Harvard in 1865. "He lived alone in the dorm and struggled through his freshman year, which he had to repeat. [...] Although he did not report hostilities, he found his classmates continually curious and confused by him. Rumors spread that he was an escaped slave, that he had no prior education, or that he had served in the Civil War" (Ardizzone, AN ILLUMINATED LIFE, p. 19). Greener graduated with high honors, and his many awards include first prize in Boylston Declamation, First Bodwoin for a Dissertation, and the Boylston Prize for Oratory (Williams, p. 439). Greener went on to a distinguished career in education, law, and civil rights: "Greener was a reflection of the professional elite, the "Talented Tenth" of the Negro race, whose accomplishments the leader W.E.B. Du Bois believed would both persuade white America to endorse social and political equality and actively help other members of the race to improve their educational, cultural, economic, and political standing. [...] Du Bois had specifically identified Greener as a member of this special group [...]" (Ardizzone, p. 15). Upon graduating, he held teaching positions in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. before accepting a professorship at the University of South Carolina during its brief Reconstruction-era experiment in integration. While there, Greener became the school's first African-American librarian, earned his law degree, and worked tirelessly to advance African-American rights and education. He later served as Dean of the Howard University law school and continued to practice law for much of his life--most notably defending West Point cadet Johnson C. Whittaker. Greener also wrote and lectured on African-American topics, debating Frederick Douglass on the issue of black migration (cf. Woodson, NEGRO ORATORS, pp. 453-487). Greener's daughter, Belle da Costa Greene, "passed" as white, and would go on to a brilliant career as J.P. Morgan's librarian. An immensely important and rare item, a document from the tragically brief period of Reconstruction-era gains in civil rights for blacks. The yearbook includes one portrait of Greener SIGNED by him beneath the image; additionally, Greener appears in the Thayer Club ("Commons") group photo and the Class of 1870 group photo. The photographer, George Kendall Warren (1824-1884), was a distinguished northeastern landscape photographer and the most highly-regarded collegiate yearbook photographer to elite northeastern institutions: Dartmouth, Williams, Brown, Wesleyan, Yale, Princeton, Rutgers, West Point, Union, and Harvard

      Orange Judd & Company 1870 - A marvelous landscape architecture and landscape gardening book with Part I of 40 pages of text replete with illustrations devoted to Landscape Architecture: General Suggestions, Lawns, Seeding, Top-dressing lawns, drainage, walks, grading, hedges, trees and shrubs, transplanting trees and shrubs, ornaments, rock-work, tools, calculation of cost, hints on burial lots. Part II focuses on the plans of improved places and presents amazing color plates, many double folding plates, printed in green, red, brown, yellow, pink, and black. There are 24 splendid plates. The plates are crisp,strikingly in register, and bright. Many are double folding plates, including a Newport residence on Bellevue Avenue belonging to F.L. Barieda, Esq. "Grand and imposing in its location the costly building stands in the midst of a beautiful park, raised to a level about 14 feet above the sea,the grounds including an area of five acres." Plate XIII's striking design features a soft green for the park and tree-lined areas in contrast to the red building areas. There are also designs of gardens in Peekskill, Westchester Co., NY; the Alexander Van Rensselaer and Hamilton Hoppin seats at Newport, R.I.; Washington Park in Brooklyn, NY.; Retreat Park in Hartford, Conn.; an approach and division map of property situated near Hastings Westchester Co., NY, designed by Olmsted & Vaux. ; the Cedars at Newport, R.I.; Residence of Morris K.       18701871, [Edinburgh 1870 - Approximately 4-3/4 x 3-3/4 inches. . Written at the top "Robertus L. Stevenson" in cursive handwriting in brown ink. The card has the number 150 stamped in red print at the top, then reads "Civis Academia Edinensis a Novembre MDCCCLXX ad Novembrem MDCCCLXXI". This was in fact, Stevenson's matriculation card in the Faculty of Arts, and "150" was his matriculation number for 1870-1871. The inscription reads: "To Arthur Hughes, from his friend, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, April 1870." These men were two of the most important artists of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. This is one of only a few copies personally inscribed to Rossetti's close friends (see D.G.R. Letters to Publishers). Dark green cloth boards with gilt title to spine. Le premier procédé de photographie en couleurs fut inventé simultanément et indépendamment par Louis Ducos du Hauron (1837-1920) et par Charles Cros. Mais le mémoire de Cros était purement théorique, tandis que la communication de Ducos du Hauron était accompagnée de "plusieurs spécimens". "Louis Ducos du Hauron made the greatest contribution to the evolution of colour photography in the nineteenth century. He proposed the substractive method of colour photography in his book Les couleurs en photographie, solutions du problème (1869)." (Gernsheim).       1870 - Scheda bibliografica tratta da Wikipedia. Rottmann was born in Handschuhsheim (today a part of Heidelberg) on 11 January 1797. There he received his first drawing lessons from his father, Friedrich Rottmann, who taught drawing at the university in Heidelberg. He formed himself chiefly through the study of nature and of great masterworks. In his first artistic period, he painted atmospheric phenomena. After gaining prominence with Heidelberg at Sunset (a water color), and Castle Eltz, he settled in Munich in 1822 and devoted himself to Bavarian scenery. Here his second period began, and in 1824 he married Friedericke, the daughter of his uncle, Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, who served as an attendant at court.\rThrough this connection, he made the acquaintance of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who in 1826/27 sponsored his travels in Italy in order to widen his repertoire, which up to that point consisted solely of domestic, German, landscapes. In Italy, Rottmann made sketches for the 28 Italian landscapes in fresco which he was commissioned to paint in the arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich. The cycle, completed in 1833, gave visual expression to Ludwig’s alliance with Italy, and raised the genre of landscape painting to the height of history painting, the preferred mode of the King’s other great commissions for monumental painting. The frescos unfortunately deteriorated under climatic influences. The cartoons for them are in the Darmstadt Gallery.\rIn 1834 Rottmann traveled to Greece to prepare for a commission from Ludwig for a second cycle; one might mark here the beginning of his third period. At first also intended for the Hofgarten arcade, the 23 great landscapes were eventually installed in the newly-built Neue Pinakothek where they were given their own hall.\rOf his easel pictures, Ammer Lake and Marathon are in the National Gallery, Berlin; The Acropolis of Sikyon and Corfu in the Pinakothek, Munich; others in the Schack Gallery, Munich, and in Karlsruhe; and seven in the Leipzig Museum.\rCarl Rottmann died on 7 July 1850 in Munich, aged 53 of undisclosed causes.
