Personal Memoirs of John H. Brinton, Major and Surgeon U.S.V. 1861-1865

8vo. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. 361pp. Frontispiece portrait. Very good. Mild bit of edgewear; inner hinges starting but expertly and archivally strengthened, thus tight; smallish age toned area on front endpaper from long-ago newsprint contact. Tight and nice first edition of this important and scarce military medical memoir. This exceptional copy bears the small custom bookplate on front pastedown of Christian Brinton (1870-1942), a noted medical professional well-known as an art critic collector and curator who promoted modernism and other art "isms." Above this bookplate, he handsomely pencils "C.W. Brinton / Bryn Mawr, Pa. 10/15/42" -- obviously pencilled shortly before his death some time later that year. The front flyleaf opposite this bears two additional Brinton family inscriptions: Nicely penned near the top is this presentation inscription: "Christian Brinton / with the regards of / his friend and / kinsman the editor / Jasper Yates Brinton / July 3, 1915." And below this is the following large, bold inscription: "To Christian Brinton / from / 'The dark haired girl' / on this fourteenth day / of November -- 1935 -- / 'Bidderhook' / Sarah Brinton Auchenried." John H. married Sarah Ward in 1866 and the couple had four children, the youngest of which was Jasper, who edited his father's posthumously-published autobiography. What Christian and Sarah's relationship to the author is remains unclear. James I. Robertson Jr. notes: "Brinton, a renowned surgeon and able scholar, provides intimate glimpses of both Federal hospitals in the West and the principal battlefields of the East." NEVINS I, 63.

A Collection of five first editions by Alfred Tennyson from the Library of Arthur Tennyson, four INSCRIBED, three SIGNED.

1870-86 All five volumes are in original green cloth, rubbed, with fore edges of boards uniformly affected by damp.1. The Holy Grail, Strahan, 1870. INSCRIBED on leading blank by Emily Tennyson: 'Arthur & Harriet From Alfred & Emily'. 2. Queen Mary, Henry S. King, 1875. INSCRIBED on e.p.: 'Arthur Tennyson from Alfred'. 3. Harold, Henry S. King, 1877. INSCRIBED on half title: 'Arthur & Harriet Tennyson from Alfred'. 4. The Lover's Tale, C. Kegan Paul, 1879. INSCRIBED on e.p. in pencil: 'A & H Tennyson, Clifton, Bristol, June 6th 1879 from the Author Ad. T.'. 5. Locksley Hall, Macmillan, 1886. With gift inscription for Christmas 1886 in pencil on leading blank, not from Alfred, and partially erased. Alfred and Arthur were the fourth and eighth of the twelve children born to the Reverend George Clayton Tennyson, 1778-1831, and Elizabeth Ffytche, 1781-1865. Arthur, 1814-1899, who married Harriet West, is one of the 'lost brothers' of the family; no letters to or from him are recorded in the Tennyson Letters ed. by Lang & Shannon. His grandfather suggests in 1827 that Arthur becomes a 'cadet or into the Navy'. In 1831 he writes: 'I don't know what Arthur is fit for. He still does not know the Multiplication Tables or indeed anything useful. He could learn if he would but he is idle as a Foal. He must be instructed before he can be fit for anything and his gestures and twitchings etc. are ridiculous and he would be a subject of ridicule anywhere.' Another letter from Cecilia Tennyson refers to Arthur as 'my poor brother' (1837). By 1843, Arthur was voluntarily admitted to Dumfries Asylum in an attempt to cure his alcoholism - and was visited there by Thomas Carlyle. Later in the year he travelled with Frederick and Septimus to Italy - and stayed there for the next twelve years. In 1852, Emily Tennyson refers to 'Arthur's book of sketches' and Charles says that he is 'going to put up at Arthur's'. He is mentioned only once in a letter from Alfred, writing to H.K. Atkinson in November 1873: '... Arthur is married, but has no family ...'. Little else seems to be known; Harriet West died at some point (date not found) and Arthur remarried Louisa Maynard. Interestingly, Alfred purchased his house, Farringford, on the Isle Of Wight, from the Reverend George Turner Seymour - of Clifton, Bristol, the address for Arthur & Harriet mentioned in the inscription to The Lover's Tale.

1870. With Twelve Illustrations by S. L. Fildes, and a Portrait. London: Chapman and Hall, 1870. Original green cloth decorated in black and gilt. First Edition in book form. This remains one of the great unfinished and unsolved literary mysteries: only six serial parts were written when Dickens died on the 9th of June 1870. Numerous other writers have completed the tale, as they saw fit; even today, this mystery prompts other mysteries -- such as the recent books THE LAST DICKENS by Matthew Pearl and DROOD by Dan Simmons.~This copy is in the first binding state (with the saw-tooth border on the front cover). Stab-holes are visible near the gutter of the leaves, indicating that this is a copy bound from those original serial parts (the publisher invited buyers of parts to bring them in to be put into the official binding); this copy accordingly does not include the ad catalogue found only in some copies that were not originally in parts. Condition is near-fine with very little soil or wear. Smith I pp 111-117.

Carte Générale de l'Océan Pacifique dressée par Mr. C.A. Vincendon-Dumoulin

Paris: Dépôt Général de la Marine, 1870. Engraved map measuring 715 x 1040 mm. (sheet size); some edge-wear and toning, but a good copy nonetheless. Is Lake Torrens an Inland Sea? Impressive chart of the Pacific, including Australia and the Americas. It was first published in 1851; this is an example of the later issue with corrections dated 1870.The chart was compiled by French naval hydrographer Clement Adrien Vincendon-Dumoulin who served aboard two important expeditions to the South Pacific and beyond. Vincendon-Dumoulin accompanied the scientific voyage of 1822-1825 under Duperrey; he also served aboard the second Dumont d'Urville expedition 1837-1840 which sailed well into Antarctic waters. French scientific voyaging of this era aimed to resolve remaining geographical anomalies, and produce accurate hydrographical charting of remote Pacific waters.Much of the detail of inland Australia is clearly informed by English language exploration accounts (evidenced by good detail of riverine geography). One curious anomaly is the size and extent of Lake Torrens in South Australia, here misrepresented as a horseshoe shaped lake on the scale of an inland sea.The map is from the collection of the Freycinet family, and has been marked with route of a voyage to Australia and the Americas by a later descendent.

TRANS - CONTINENTAL. "Published Daily on the Pullman Hotel Express between Boston and San Francisco." Volume I. Nos 1 - 12. May 24, 1870 - July 4, 1870

Divers cities:. 1870.. 10-1/8" x 7-1/4". 1st printing (Howes S-929). 12 issues [complete], of 4 pp each.. Bound in the publisher's original purple cloth binding, with gilt stamped lettering & train device to front board (professionally recased).. Spine very sun-tanned, with splay & wear to boards. Ex-library, with. bookplate to front paste-down. Occasional edge chipping to leaves.. A Good- plus to About VG copy of this fragile item.. The 12 issues of this paper, printed on a Gordon Press in the baggage car, which led an 8 Pullman car train, were published over the course of 6 weeks while the Boston Board of Trade, headed by the Hon. Alexander H. Rice, journeyed 3000+ miles to San Francisco to meet with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. & & The paper, in what it reported, was much like any other: for example, besides reporting the normal business of the train & its passengers, in the first issue, we see that the Athletics of Philadelphia beat Harvard Base Ball Club 20-8 ...& & The office for this paper, the editor tells us, was located in the second car... a "very handsome smoking car, divided into 4 rooms." Of particular note to bibliophiles is the fact that the train was equipped with "two well- stocked libraries, replete with choice works of fiction, history, poetry, etc." & & Each issue recorded a different locale on the masthead, with the first issue proclaiming Niagara Falls, on to Omaha, Cheyenne, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Summit Sierra Nevadas Cal, San Francisco [where the train stopped in front of the Grand Hotel], Promontory Point Utah, Laramie, Grand Island Nebraska, Burlington Iowa and finally, Boston itself. & & A somewhat uncommon item in the trade, generally regarded as the first newspaper to be printed on a moving train. . Masthead vignette of train. Occasional cut.

        The History of Robinson Crusoe

New York: McLoughlin Bros., circa, 1870. Large octavo, six large handcoloured woodcuts; a very good copy in the original green illustrated wrappers. One of the most famous of all English books, Robinson Crusoe was a seminal work in the imaginary voyage tradition: the story of Crusoe's hard-fought survival and eventual moral redemption was responsible for an entire literary genre, the 'Robinsonade'. Defoe's story was so popular that it was prolifically re-issued and translated, and sired a seemingly endless series of imitations. This American chapbook version of the story is beautifully illustrated with six large handcoloured woodcuts.

        Fairyland, In

1870. first edition. Heaven Elf UsA Very Fine First Edition In Fairyland[DOYLE, Richard, illustrator]. ALLINGHAM, William. In Fairyland. Pictures from the Elf-World. London: Longmans, Green, Reader, & Dyer, 1870. First edition, published Christmas 1869 yet post-dated 1870. Folio (14 7/8 x 10 5/8 in; 378 x 271 mm). [8], 31, [1] pp, printed on rectos only. Frontispiece and fifteen wood-engraved plates printed in color by Edmund Evans, many plates with three-four vignette images each. Miscellaneous black and white line illustrations, including title-page.Original green morocco-grained cloth pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt. Elaborately gilt-decorated spine. All edges gilt. Original pale yellow-coated end-papers with the small yellow rectangular binders ticket of Edmonds & Remnants, London on rear paste-down. Occasional minor spotting, affecting preliminary leaves and verso of frontispiece only. The mildest of rubbing to spine and corner extremities, the gilt on the front cover and spine bright and fresh. Contemporary ink inscription on half-title "Edith R. Potter / a birthday present from / Uncle John & Aunt Eliza Leech / October 1870." This book nearly always suffers from the gut-of-percha binding coming loose and causing the pages to become frayed at the edges. This copy has been expertly and completely invisibly re-cased (before any edge wear). A bright and fine copy of this wonderful book, hardly ever seen in this condition.Illustrator "Richard ["Dickie"] Doyle (1824-1883) was nineteen when he joined the staff of Punch, for which he designed the first cover" (Osborne, vol. I, p. 442); he also designed the Punch masthead, used for over a century afterward. His father, John Doyle, was the noted Irish political caricaturist who signed his work, "H.B." Doyle collaborated with John Leech, W.C. Stanfield and other artists to co-illustrate three of Charles Dickens' Christmas books, The Chimes (1844), The Cricket on the Hearth (1845) and The Battle of Life (1846). After the success of In Fairyland he went on to illustrate a string of fantasy-themed books."William Allingham (1824-1889) was an Irish poet who became a friend of Leigh Hunt and was introduced to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood by Coventry Patmore" (Osborne, vol. I, p. 50)."It is generally felt that Richard Doyle rose to his greatest heights with the graceful clusters of humanized and sentimentalized but endearing little elves he created for In Fairyland. In the case of this book the pictures preceded the text, a situation not uncommon in the history of illustrated children's books. The Irish poet William Allingham wrote verses to accompany Doyle's colorful fantasies. Edmund Evans produced the colored engravings; they are among the very finest examples of his work. Doyle's illustrations for In Fairyland were used again, in 1884, to illustrate Princess Nobody, an original fairy tale for children by Andrew Lang. This is the first edition of In Fairyland" (Morgan Library, Early Children's Books)."Doyle's most sought-after book is the folio, In Fairyland - A Series of Pictures from the Elf-World, 1870 (second edition 1875), a masterpiece of book illustration and an outstanding example of the colour printing of the equally well-known Edmund Evans (1826-1905), a craftsman whose work for Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, Kate Greenaway, and other[s]... put him at the top of his profession. In Fairyland... is one of the finest books ever produced for children, and from the collector's point of view a most desirable item to add to any library of juvenile works, especially copies in the original green, morocco-grained, full-cloth bindings, pictorially blocked in gold on the front cover..." (Quayle, The Collector's Book of Children's Books, p. 41).Morgan 168. Muir, Victorian, p. 102.
