TRANS - CONTINENTAL. "Published Daily on the Pullman Hotel Express between Boston and San Francisco." Volume I. Nos 1 - 12. May 24, 1870 - July 4, 1870

Divers cities:. 1870.. 10-1/8" x 7-1/4". 1st printing (Howes S-929). 12 issues [complete], of 4 pp each.. Bound in the publisher's original purple cloth binding, with gilt stamped lettering & train device to front board (professionally recased).. Spine very sun-tanned, with splay & wear to boards. Ex-library, with. bookplate to front paste-down. Occasional edge chipping to leaves.. A Good- plus to About VG copy of this fragile item.. The 12 issues of this paper, printed on a Gordon Press in the baggage car, which led an 8 Pullman car train, were published over the course of 6 weeks while the Boston Board of Trade, headed by the Hon. Alexander H. Rice, journeyed 3000+ miles to San Francisco to meet with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. & & The paper, in what it reported, was much like any other: for example, besides reporting the normal business of the train & its passengers, in the first issue, we see that the Athletics of Philadelphia beat Harvard Base Ball Club 20-8 ...& & The office for this paper, the editor tells us, was located in the second car... a "very handsome smoking car, divided into 4 rooms." Of particular note to bibliophiles is the fact that the train was equipped with "two well- stocked libraries, replete with choice works of fiction, history, poetry, etc." & & Each issue recorded a different locale on the masthead, with the first issue proclaiming Niagara Falls, on to Omaha, Cheyenne, Ogden, Salt Lake City, Summit Sierra Nevadas Cal, San Francisco [where the train stopped in front of the Grand Hotel], Promontory Point Utah, Laramie, Grand Island Nebraska, Burlington Iowa and finally, Boston itself. & & A somewhat uncommon item in the trade, generally regarded as the first newspaper to be printed on a moving train. . Masthead vignette of train. Occasional cut.

        The History of Robinson Crusoe

New York: McLoughlin Bros., circa, 1870. Large octavo, six large handcoloured woodcuts; a very good copy in the original green illustrated wrappers. One of the most famous of all English books, Robinson Crusoe was a seminal work in the imaginary voyage tradition: the story of Crusoe's hard-fought survival and eventual moral redemption was responsible for an entire literary genre, the 'Robinsonade'. Defoe's story was so popular that it was prolifically re-issued and translated, and sired a seemingly endless series of imitations. This American chapbook version of the story is beautifully illustrated with six large handcoloured woodcuts.

        Fairyland, In

1870. first edition. Heaven Elf UsA Very Fine First Edition In Fairyland[DOYLE, Richard, illustrator]. ALLINGHAM, William. In Fairyland. Pictures from the Elf-World. London: Longmans, Green, Reader, & Dyer, 1870. First edition, published Christmas 1869 yet post-dated 1870. Folio (14 7/8 x 10 5/8 in; 378 x 271 mm). [8], 31, [1] pp, printed on rectos only. Frontispiece and fifteen wood-engraved plates printed in color by Edmund Evans, many plates with three-four vignette images each. Miscellaneous black and white line illustrations, including title-page.Original green morocco-grained cloth pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt. Elaborately gilt-decorated spine. All edges gilt. Original pale yellow-coated end-papers with the small yellow rectangular binders ticket of Edmonds & Remnants, London on rear paste-down. Occasional minor spotting, affecting preliminary leaves and verso of frontispiece only. The mildest of rubbing to spine and corner extremities, the gilt on the front cover and spine bright and fresh. Contemporary ink inscription on half-title "Edith R. Potter / a birthday present from / Uncle John & Aunt Eliza Leech / October 1870." This book nearly always suffers from the gut-of-percha binding coming loose and causing the pages to become frayed at the edges. This copy has been expertly and completely invisibly re-cased (before any edge wear). A bright and fine copy of this wonderful book, hardly ever seen in this condition.Illustrator "Richard ["Dickie"] Doyle (1824-1883) was nineteen when he joined the staff of Punch, for which he designed the first cover" (Osborne, vol. I, p. 442); he also designed the Punch masthead, used for over a century afterward. His father, John Doyle, was the noted Irish political caricaturist who signed his work, "H.B." Doyle collaborated with John Leech, W.C. Stanfield and other artists to co-illustrate three of Charles Dickens' Christmas books, The Chimes (1844), The Cricket on the Hearth (1845) and The Battle of Life (1846). After the success of In Fairyland he went on to illustrate a string of fantasy-themed books."William Allingham (1824-1889) was an Irish poet who became a friend of Leigh Hunt and was introduced to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood by Coventry Patmore" (Osborne, vol. I, p. 50)."It is generally felt that Richard Doyle rose to his greatest heights with the graceful clusters of humanized and sentimentalized but endearing little elves he created for In Fairyland. In the case of this book the pictures preceded the text, a situation not uncommon in the history of illustrated children's books. The Irish poet William Allingham wrote verses to accompany Doyle's colorful fantasies. Edmund Evans produced the colored engravings; they are among the very finest examples of his work. Doyle's illustrations for In Fairyland were used again, in 1884, to illustrate Princess Nobody, an original fairy tale for children by Andrew Lang. This is the first edition of In Fairyland" (Morgan Library, Early Children's Books)."Doyle's most sought-after book is the folio, In Fairyland - A Series of Pictures from the Elf-World, 1870 (second edition 1875), a masterpiece of book illustration and an outstanding example of the colour printing of the equally well-known Edmund Evans (1826-1905), a craftsman whose work for Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott, Kate Greenaway, and other[s]... put him at the top of his profession. In Fairyland... is one of the finest books ever produced for children, and from the collector's point of view a most desirable item to add to any library of juvenile works, especially copies in the original green, morocco-grained, full-cloth bindings, pictorially blocked in gold on the front cover..."         [ Photographically Illustrated Books ] Electro-Physiognomy. A Condensed Resume from the Work of M. Duchenne (de Boulogne). IN Journal of Psychological Medicine and Diseases of the Nervous System

[ New York ]: [ D. Appleton & Company ], 1870. Cloth. Very Good. 224 pages + 3 leaves plates + [8], [225]-448 pages. 8vo. Red cloth binding with simple spine labeling "Psychological Medicine 4". Ex-library Library of Congress, properly withdrawn with surplus stamp on front flyleaf. Contains the first 2 (of 4) issues of the Journal of Psychological Medicine and Diseases of the Nervous System, Volume IV (January and April). Discrete LC perforated stamp on first page of the first issue. Otherwise unmarked internally. Cloth. The Journal of Psychological Medicine and Diseases of the Nervous System is an interesting publication. This volume is particularly interesting because of a review illustrated with albumen photographs. Duchenne in 1862 wrote "Mecanisme de la physionomie humaine, ou analyse electro-physiologique de l'expression des passions applicable a la pratique des arts plastiques." where he "studied the mechanism of facial expression during emotion; his atlas of photographs is a most important contribution to medical photography. Darwin reproduced a number of his photographs in The Expression of the Emotions." (Garrison/Morton 5/4973). Duchenne's work, which documented the electrical stimulation of facial muscles and recorded the results as "emotions", "marks the beginning of photography applied to anatomy and neurology" and is an important book both in medicine and in photographically illustrated books. The Truthful Lens #49. The Photobook: A History Volume I: p50.What we offer here is a substantial English language review of Duchenne's work. The review, by M.L. Edgeworth, is found on pages 76-87 of the January issue. The review not only gives a detailed discussion of Duchenne's work, but it also reproduces images from Duchenne's work in slightly different form. 3 plates, all albumen photographs, are offered to help explain Duchenne's book - the first a full page image, and the following 2 plates each with 24 small images showing the various electrical stimulations to the face and it's results "emotionally". The last 2 plates are really mashups of the plates in Duchenne's original work. Edgeworth limits his explanations to lengthy quotes and his own interpretations of the process by which the "artist" Duchenne elicits various emotional results captured in these early images, leaving the perhaps more philosophical/ethical commentary to others. Some of his detailed review references the included images while some strangely refer to other plates from Duchenne not reproduced here (perhaps reproduction costs or rights became an issue especially since this article carried nearly 1/3 of the plates in the original publication). A great example of the application of photography used to book reviews, something not often done in this period.Other interesting articles in the 2 issues include one on the "Physical Action of Magnetism [on the human body]" by John Vansant and "The Psychological Action of Opium" by Alonzo Calkins.

It was appointed photographer to the king of Siam in 1880 and was also extensively patronized by the British colonial authorities to record political occasions and official visits.         Sleighing in New York

Emil Seitz, New York 1870 - Lithograph printed in colors, after D. Benecke. Designed by Th. Benecke. Printed by Nagel & Lewis. A merry panorama of chaos on lower Broadway, 1855 Looking east across Broadway at Barnum's Museum just up from St. Paul's Church, and focused on a couple, thought to be Jenny Lind and her American impresario, P. T. Barnum, in a sleigh in front of Barnum's Museum. Jenny Lind toured America in the early 1850's. The "Swedish Nightingale" was immensely successful, one of the first "stars". There is, as ever, a huge traffic jam, this one involving one-horse, two-horse and six-horse sleighs, in a variety of styles and livery decorations. The large sleigh with six white horses is a public omnibus. On the front is a portrait of "Ol' Rough and Ready", the recently deceased President, Zachary Taylor, who died quite suddenly and unexpectedly in 1850. The policeman with a horse whip in the background wears the distinctive "cap and star" uniform, the star made of copper. The whole scene vibrates with excitement, confusion, merriment and stress. Note the over the shoulder trombone in the band in the balcony over the entrance to the Museum. "This imaginative and colorful print, showing Barnum's Museum, is?justly celebrated." (Peters) NY Public Library, The Eno Collection of New York City Views , number 335; Stokes, Iconography of Manhattan Island , page 898; Peters, America on Stone , page 93, illustrated plate 12.

David Le Vay, The History of Orthopaedics, pp.385-388 - - The second of Stromeyer's pupils to arrive in America was Louis Bauer (184-1898). - Carl August Ludwig Bauer "physician, was born in Stettin, the provincial capital of Pomerania, in July, 1814. He began the study of medicine in 1833, and attended successively the universities of Germany at Greifswald, Brelsau and Berlin. In 1838 he passed the state examination as physician, surgeon, obstetrician and in forensic medicine, and entered private practice on the island of Ruegen in the Baltic Sea. He soon received an appointment from the German government as country (Kreiss) medical officer in East Prussia; was subsequently, by his own request, transferred to Pomerania with official residence at Stolpe, holding this until the year 1849. As a democrat, he took an active interest in the revolution of the time, became a leader in his party, and was elected a member of the lower branch of the Prussion legislature. On the dissolution of parliament, prosecution was employed against all who had opposed the crown, among whom he was numbered. Suspension from office, imprisonment upon the charge of high treason, crime against his majesty, the king, and similar supposititious charges followed. The high court failed to find a true bill; he was temporarily discharged after imprisonment of ten weeks- Liberty lasted but a few days, when, mutterings reaching him through a confidential friend that the district court would the next day take his case under consideration upon new charges of a similar character, he left Germany and embarked for England. While in Loudon he became a member of the Loudon medical society, and by examination a member of the Royal college of surgeons of England. In 1853 he arrived in New York, settled in Brooklyn, and soon secured a successful practice. He co-operated in the establishment of the Long Island college hospital, and was appointed professor of anatomy and surgeon to the new institution. In 1862 he was elected health officer of the city of Brooklyn, and held that position for nearly two years. In 1866 he was sent to Europe to take charge of a patient. During his four months' sojourn he studied the character and management of medical institutions. In 1869 he left Brooklyn and went to St. Louis, where he founded the St. Louis college of physicians and surgeons, was its dean for twelve consecutive years, and the professor of the principles and practice of surgery, a position which he has long held. Dr. Bauer devotes special attention to the culture of orthopedic surgery, of which specially he was undoubtedly the father in the United States. He has extended the domain to joint diseases, and rendered his knowledge and experience on the subject the common property of the profession by writing a treatise which rendered several editions necessary, and which has been translated into the German, Swedish, and Italian languages.         Ondonga kielen ABD. Ensimäinen irja Ondonga kielellä . . . =ABD Moshindonga. Omukanda uatango koshindonga ua piangoa . . .Helsinki, Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seuran [=Finnish Literature Society], 1876. 8vo. With 2 title-pages, the first in Finnish and the second in Ndonga, a brief preface in both languages, but with the sample texts in Ndonga. Contemporary brown textured cloth.

WorldCat (2 copies); not in Mendelssohn. A rare primer of the Bantu dialect Ndonga or OshiNdonga, spoken by the Ovambo people in the kingdom of Ondonga in what is now northern Namibia and southern Angola, still spoken today by some 1 million people. It was published by the printing office of the Finnish Literature Society in Helsinki and many of the texts are Christian. Finnish Lutherans set up a mission in Ondangwa, seat of the kings of Ondonga, in 1870, and the present primer was probably intended both to help Finnish missionaries preparing for life in Africa learn Ndonga and for them to use in Ondonga to teach the natives to read and write their own language and to promote Christian ideas. In very good condition, with only very slight browning. Lower corner of the front board chipped.

Japanese album of 12 woodblock prints of insects and foliage in color

Japan, ca. 1870. (INSECTS) Page size 8-1/4 x 11 inches. . Original brown paper-covered boards, with printed calligraphy and seal on front cover, the plates cojoined in Oriental accordion-fashion; the covers worn, the plates fine, and complete . A very elegant set of plates showing life-size insects disporting themselves amid a wide range of blossoms, leaves, grasses, lotus, vines, and an ear of corn. Among the varieties of insects are locust, praying mantis, cicada, grasshopper, caterpillar, snail, slug, butterfly, and many others: approximately 48 insects are depicted, along with one baleful bullfrog eyeing a potential prey. The draftsmanship is meticulous, the coloring both bold and delicate, the composition classic and impeccable, and the entire work an artistic delight

Lengthy Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs Julia K. Fish, 4 pages 8vo, Headquarters, Army of the United States, Washington, 11 July 1870.

      - Discussing the future of Fort Monroe. '. the President has at last resolved to promote Capt Turnbull - though to be frank I must say that he owes nothing to me in this result: for I regarded the case as involving the existence of the Artillery School at Fortress Monroe. If this school cannot enforce study and attention it cannot long survive. Now the only means it has to compel attention to the Course of Study is to deny promotion & advancement to those who fall short of its requirements. This case was a test one - for all realised the claim and influence of the family. And if the Rule cannot be enforced against a favorite it surely should not as against a poor fellow with no such influences or opportunities. ' ''I wish you would send this my letter to Col Benjamin who will see the force of my argument better than you can .' ''[Turnbull's] case was one that concerned the whole body of Artillery officers, for it will only result in the downfall of that School, which has no force or utility unless it has the sanction of authority. .'Fort [Fortress] Monroe in Hampton, Virginia, was established as early as 1609, but was greatly enlarged, and named after President James Monroe, in the nineteenth century. It remained in Union hands during the American Civil War. Still an active military establishment it is due to be decommissioned in 2011.
