        Nizhniy-Novgorod.

ca.-80 1870 - Four-part panorama (15 x 87 cm). Albumen prints, good tonal range and in good condition. By the mid-19th century, Nizhny-Novgorod was firmly established as the trade capital of the Russian Empire. The all-Russia industrial and art exhibition was held in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896. Other industries gradually developed, and by the dawn of the 20th century it was a first-rank industrial hub as well. Henry Ford helped build a large truck and tractor plant (GAZ) in the late 1920s, sending along engineers and mechanics, including future labour leader Walter Reuther Famous writer Maxim Gorky was born there in 1868. During his lifetime, the city was renamed Gorky following his return to the Soviet Union in 1932 on invitation of Joseph Stalin. The city bore his name until 1991. During that time, the city was closed to foreigners to safeguard the security of Soviet military research. An end to the "closed" status of the city has accompanied the reinstatement of the city's original name in 1990.

BACKGROUND: David Livingstone (19 March 1813 – 1 May 1873) was a Scottish Congregationalist pioneer medical missionary with the London Missionary Society and an explorer in Africa. His meeting with H. M. Stanley on 10 November 1871 gave rise to the popular quotation "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Perhaps one of the most popular national heroes of the late 19th century in Victorian Britain, Livingstone had a mythic status, which operated on a number of interconnected levels: Protestant missionary martyr, working-class "rags to riches" inspirational story, scientific investigator and explorer, imperial reformer, anti-slavery crusader, and advocate of commercial empire. His fame as an explorer helped drive forward the obsession with discovering the sources of the River Nile that formed the culmination of the classic period of European geographical discovery and colonial penetration of the African continent. At the same time his missionary travels, "disappearance" and death in Africa, and subsequent glorification as posthumous national hero in 1874 led to the founding of several major central African Christian missionary initiatives carried forward in the era of the European "Scramble for Africa".         Garfield quotes from a new poem by James Russell Lowell on the title page of a presentation copy of Townsend?s ?Lost Abroad? ? then criticizes the dialogue of one of its characters

"The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below:Book with notations by Garfield in pencil. ?Lost Abroad? by Geo. Alfred Townsend.? Hartford, Conn.? S.M. Betts and Company, 1870. 594 pages, 5? x 7?. Garfield?s 2.75? x 1.5? bookplate ?Inter Folia Fructus / Library of / James A. Garfield? affixed inside front cover. Inscribed on verso of frontispiece, ?General Garfield, / a good Congressman, /. From a reporter of things, / Geo. Alfred Townsend.? Offset on bookplate from chocolate front free-endpaper. Foxing on pages. Navy cloth boards with gilt design and lettering on spine. Text block loose but attached. Covers, joints, and hinges worn; back hinge tears. Good condition.Congressman Garfield has written in pencil on the title page, beneath a printed quote of Percy Bysshe Shelley (?A spirit in my feet has led me ?" who knows how? ?" To thy chamber window, sweet. ?" Shelley"") the following: ?With awkward senses furloughed & head bowed / I followed some fine instinct in my feet / Cathedral p 21 / See Lowells ?Cathedral?.? These words appear on top of page 21 of James Russell Lowell?s ?The Cathedral? (Boston: Fields, Osgood, & Co., 1870), followed by ?Till, to unbend me from the loom of thought, / Looking up suddenly, I found mine eyes / Confronted with the minister?s vast repose.?In his novel ?Lost Abroad,? Townsend tells of the travels of Mr. Applegate Shrink in 47 chapters. Chapter II is titled ?The Contractor?s Family.? Garfield is critical of this paragraph written by Townsend on page 25: ??My dear,? said the little gentleman, ?if you turn my mind from its natural drift, it will stagnate. You go to Europe for one thing, I for another. I buy you fine dresses. Show ?em. If you can get into society, stay there. But you must let me speculate on profit and risk, or I shall go mad.? ?Speculate as you like, Titus Oates,? answered the lady, ?only hold your tongue.? ?I can't, my dear,? protested Mr. Oates; ?if I see anything it?s essential to ask what it cost. If I don't know what it costs, how can I enjoy it? If anything has been constructed, a house, a fort, a government, a world, I must know the terms of agreement. You reason, my dear, from cause to effect; I supply a third item, ?" it is cause, contract and effect. You say that two persons are necessary to a bargain; I maintain that there are three.?Garfield brackets the lines quoted above and pencils in the blank right margin: ?An ignorant contractor like Oates dosnt philosophize in this way-? Garfield has underlined a few words throughout the book which he undoubtedly read."

[Broadside]: "South-East Addition to Indianapolis " Great Auction Sale of Real Estate! Monday, April 18, 1870

Indianapolis: Braden & Burford, Printers. 1870. First. Large broadside (approximately 18" x 22") printed in red, green, and black. Old light folds, since flattened, a couple of small pencil marks on the map portion, near fine. Text of the broadside surrounds a large plate map of the properties being auctioned for sale. The section for sale, near Fountain Square, was bordered by Reid, Cypress, Prospect, and Shelby Streets (some of the streets still exist while several others lie underneath what are currently residences). While some land auction broadsides can be snooze-inducing, this is a notably large and attractive example, particularly so embellished in red and green. .

XXIV,528; X,552 pp.* First Dutch edition; first published in London 1869 The Malay Archipelago; the land of the orang-utan and the bird of paradise. - Wallace's (1823-1913) second, longest, and most significant expedition was to the relatively underexplored Malay Archipelago between 1854 and 1862. His journey took him first to Singapore and then Borneo, where he hunted and observed the orangutan (1855-1856). Heading east to the Moluccas group, he explored Amboyna and Ternate during 1857 and 1858. In 1858 Wallace traveled to Lombok and Bali in the Timor group, recognizing this group of islands as the boundary between the two primary continental influences dividing the natural history of the archipelago, the Indian sub-continent in the northwest, and Australia in the southeast. The remaining three years of Wallace's travels (1859-1862) took him east to the Papuan group, where he explored Macassar, the Aru Islands (where he studied the bird of paradise) then New Guinea. This was interspersed with return visits west to Ternate and Amboyna, and the Celebes group for the first time. He visited Sumatra before returning to England via Singapore (Speake, Encyclopedia, p.1264). This is a magnificent combination of interesting sketches of travel and vivid pictures of natural history.Bastin-Brommer N 564; Tiele 1195; Cat. KITLV p.5.

Powell was a naturalist and explorer who, after losing an arm in the Civil War, in 1869 led the first known passage through the Grand Canyon. Two years later he and his team re-traced, mapped, and photographed the route. In 1881, Powell was appointed the second director of the U.S. Geological Survey. Powell's autograph is uncommon. .

Gratulationsschrift des Paedagogiums zu Basel. Inhalt: Beiträge zur Quellenkunde und Kritik des Laertius Diogenes. Von Prof. Dr. Friedrich Nietzsche.

Carl Schutze's Universitaetsbuchdruckerei., Basel, 1870 - Basel, Carl Schutze's Universitaetsbuchdruckerei. 1870. 4°- Titel, gedruckte Widmung, 36 S., 7 S., 1 n.n. S. Blaugrüne Originalbroschur in neuer Pappschachtel. Schaberg 18. - Erste Ausgabe. Schaberg vermutet jedoch mindestens in 100 Exemplaren. Stereotypical Racist Watercolor

Small watercolor of an African-American boy in straw hat hungrily contemplating a watermelon. Matted, framed and glazed. Unsigned. Image matted to approximately 4" x 3". Unexamined out of the frame, the mat has a light stain on one corner, the image appears fine. A stereotypical but finely rendered image. Undated, our guess would be circa 1870-80. .

Fourth Edition, with Appendix, As to the 500,000 Men [with] IMPEACHMENT OF THE BRITISH LION BY THE BRITISH UNICORN AT THE QUEEN'S ARMS

London: various publishers,. 1870-1871. Small octavo, eleven pamplets,. bound together in three-quarter black leather and marbled boards in one volume.. Last two titles have closely trimmed fore-edges with loss of a few. letters of text from right edges of most leaves, else all are very. good. None have their original paper covers. (#107140). Mostly first editions. Eleven pamphlets, ten of them issued as responses to THE FIGHT AT DAME EUROPA'S SCHOOL, Henry William Pullen's anonymously published allegory about the Franco-Prussian war (1870-1871). About 200 pamphlets, taking various sides of the question, appeared over the next couple of years. "The treatment by Pullen and his followers of modern mechanized war as a row among school boys is likely to strike a modern reader as either quaint or horribly naïve. The other irony triggered by a modern reading is that Dame Europa's School, an allegorical figment in 1870, was, a hundred years later, well on its way to becoming an actual political and economic institution, the European Union (which now, under the stress of a single currency, may be on its way back to being a fantasy). The only pamphlet here with futuristic content is THE BREAK-UP OF DAME EUROPA'S SCHOOL (Locke I, see below). The only pamphlet here not found in Locke (Spectrum I, II or III) is the last of these, IMPEACHMENT OF THE BRITISH LION BY THE BRITISH UNICORN AT THE QUEEN'S ARMS by Wykehamicus Friedrich, pseudonym of Frederick Gale (London: P. S. King, 34, Parliament Street, 1871), which abandons the schoolboy allegory of Pullen for a system based on animals (England = the Lion; Scotland = the Unicorn; France = the French Eagle; Germany = the double-faced Eagle; Russia = the Bear; America = the Stars and Stripes Menagerie, etc.), but it is still very much in the same spirit of half-playful, half-earnest satire." - Robert Eldridge. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy I, pp. 16-17 and Spectrum II, pp. 130-131.

Autograph letter signed to Latimer Clark

1870. Very Good. Ronalds, Francis (1788-1873). A.L.s. to Latimer Clark. Battle, April 11, 1870. 2pp. 181 x 114 mm. Provenance: Latimer Clark.Ronalds invented the first working electric telegraph in 1816. His device involved two synchronized clocks whose dials were marked with the letters of the alphabet; instead of hands, each clock had a rotating disk with a notch cut into it so that only one letter on the clock face was visible at a time (Standage 1998, 19). Ronalds placed one clock at each end of eight miles of insulated wire that he had laid down in his garden, and used electrical impulses to transmit signals between them. He wrote to Lord Melville of the British Admiralty offering to demonstrate his telegraph, but was rejected: John Barrow, secretary to the admiralty, wrote back to Ronalds saying that "telegraphs of any kind are now [after the conclusion of the Napoleonic wars] totally unnecessary, and that no other than the one now in use [a semaphore telegraph] will be adopted" (quoted in DNB). Ronalds did not pursue his telegraphy venture any further, but left a record of it in his Descriptions of an Electric Telegraph and of Some Other Electrical Apparatus (1823; reprinted in 1871 at the suggestion of Latimer Clark). It was left to Charles Wheatstone and William Fothergill Cooke, both of whom knew of Ronalds's experiments, to develop the first telegraph adopted for public use in Britain in 1845. In 1871, in response to a petition submitted the previous year to Prime Minister William Gladstone, Ronalds received a knighthood for his contribution to telegraphy. His letter to Clark expresses his gratitude for this honor and for Clark's part in it:"Your kind congratulations are peculiarly esteemed; for I have every reason to believe that your expressions of approbation &c. of my humble labours in Electro-Telegraphy have been influential in Her Majesty's gracious act in my behalf."I believe it is almost needless to tell you that the honour conferred is much less valued by me than the testimony it helps to afford to the validity of my early labours in the matter. . . .         Poems [Special Early Binding Called for by Rossetti]

London: F. S. Ellis, 1870. First edition. First issue text. Special binding printed by the publisher's binder (Burn & Co., with their binder's ticket at rear) as requested by Rossetti. There is one copy in the Colbeck Collection, "As soon as this book was bound it ws apparent to Rossetti that the binding case was fractionally too thick for the body of the text, causing design and lettering of spine to overlap. A few copies were hastily put-up for him byt he same binder (with ticket) in a plain cloth of similar colour and texture, spine lettered "Poems/By/D. G./Rossetti" in a smaller type and between borad and narrow bands at top and bottom, etc." Therefore, a vanishingly scarce binding in what must represent one of the earliest assemblages of the sheets. As expected, has the first issue error p.27 for p.275. Hinges separating, otherwise near fine.

Personal Memoirs of John H. Brinton, Major and Surgeon U.S.V. 1861-1865

8vo. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. 361pp. Frontispiece portrait. Very good. Mild bit of edgewear; inner hinges starting but expertly and archivally strengthened, thus tight; smallish age toned area on front endpaper from long-ago newsprint contact. Tight and nice first edition of this important and scarce military medical memoir. This exceptional copy bears the small custom bookplate on front pastedown of Christian Brinton (1870-1942), a noted medical professional well-known as an art critic collector and curator who promoted modernism and other art "isms." Above this bookplate, he handsomely pencils "C.W. Brinton / Bryn Mawr, Pa. 10/15/42" -- obviously pencilled shortly before his death some time later that year. The front flyleaf opposite this bears two additional Brinton family inscriptions: Nicely penned near the top is this presentation inscription: "Christian Brinton / with the regards of / his friend and / kinsman the editor / Jasper Yates Brinton / July 3, 1915." And below this is the following large, bold inscription: "To Christian Brinton / from / 'The dark haired girl' / on this fourteenth day / of November -- 1935 -- / 'Bidderhook' / Sarah Brinton Auchenried." John H. married Sarah Ward in 1866 and the couple had four children, the youngest of which was Jasper, who edited his father's posthumously-published autobiography. What Christian and Sarah's relationship to the author is remains unclear. James I. Robertson Jr. notes: "Brinton, a renowned surgeon and able scholar, provides intimate glimpses of both Federal hospitals in the West and the principal battlefields of the East." NEVINS I, 63.

A Collection of five first editions by Alfred Tennyson from the Library of Arthur Tennyson, four INSCRIBED, three SIGNED.

1870-86 All five volumes are in original green cloth, rubbed, with fore edges of boards uniformly affected by damp.1. The Holy Grail, Strahan, 1870. INSCRIBED on leading blank by Emily Tennyson: 'Arthur & Harriet From Alfred & Emily'. 2. Queen Mary, Henry S. King, 1875. INSCRIBED on e.p.: 'Arthur Tennyson from Alfred'. 3. Harold, Henry S. King, 1877. INSCRIBED on half title: 'Arthur & Harriet Tennyson from Alfred'. 4. The Lover's Tale, C. Kegan Paul, 1879. INSCRIBED on e.p. in pencil: 'A & H Tennyson, Clifton, Bristol, June 6th 1879 from the Author Ad. T.'. 5. Locksley Hall, Macmillan, 1886. With gift inscription for Christmas 1886 in pencil on leading blank, not from Alfred, and partially erased. Alfred and Arthur were the fourth and eighth of the twelve children born to the Reverend George Clayton Tennyson, 1778-1831, and Elizabeth Ffytche, 1781-1865. Arthur, 1814-1899, who married Harriet West, is one of the 'lost brothers' of the family; no letters to or from him are recorded in the Tennyson Letters ed. by Lang & Shannon. His grandfather suggests in 1827 that Arthur becomes a 'cadet or into the Navy'. In 1831 he writes: 'I don't know what Arthur is fit for. He still does not know the Multiplication Tables or indeed anything useful. He could learn if he would but he is idle as a Foal. He must be instructed before he can be fit for anything and his gestures and twitchings etc. are ridiculous and he would be a subject of ridicule anywhere.' Another letter from Cecilia Tennyson refers to Arthur as 'my poor brother' (1837). By 1843, Arthur was voluntarily admitted to Dumfries Asylum in an attempt to cure his alcoholism - and was visited there by Thomas Carlyle. Later in the year he travelled with Frederick and Septimus to Italy - and stayed there for the next twelve years. In 1852, Emily Tennyson refers to 'Arthur's book of sketches' and Charles says that he is 'going to put up at Arthur's'. He is mentioned only once in a letter from Alfred, writing to H.K. Atkinson in November 1873: '... Arthur is married, but has no family ...'. Little else seems to be known; Harriet West died at some point (date not found) and Arthur remarried Louisa Maynard. Interestingly, Alfred purchased his house, Farringford, on the Isle Of Wight, from the Reverend George Turner Seymour - of Clifton, Bristol, the address for Arthur & Harriet mentioned in the inscription to The Lover's Tale.
